The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) recommended curriculum for the program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology highlights the research experience as an essential part of the undergraduate experience. This research experience may be achieved through well-designed laboratory courses, rather than through an extended period in an individual research laboratory. This study was aimed at organizing and evaluating a teaching sequence that covers both the Biochemistry syllabus and the development of scientific research skills. The teaching sequence was structured and tested in the discipline of Basics Biochemistry (BB280) at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), offered to the Biological Sciences students to both night and day classes. The teaching sequence was organized in activities based on scientific research skills. The first activities are more structured and less complex, becoming less structured and more complex for the gradual development of the skills. Traditionally, the lab classes' assessment consisted on the experiments reports (done by the lab group) and on the questions about the practical content asked in the exams (responded individually). Other assessment tools were also developed to both individual and group skills assessment. The teaching sequence was characterized by 3 points: learning Biochemistry contents and scientific research concepts; sequential organization of activities and gradual research skills development; skills assessment with both individual and group tools. This variety of assessment tools was important to evaluate a number of skills greater than what is possible with the use of traditional ones. The obtained results showed that the teaching sequence proposed contributed to the improvement in this course by students and for learning science / Mestrado / Bioquimica / Mestre em Biologia Funcional e Molecular

This work presents and describes two teaching methods for the learning of practical content in an education laboratory. The proposition of these methods and their implementation into two separate Institutions – Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) e Fundação Educacional de Além Paraíba (FEAP) - is part of the project of construction of the Electrical Laboratory for the electrical engineering course at UFJF and of Multipurpose Laboratory of the Civil Engineering course at FEAP. The comparison between the two methods was possible with the theory of uncertainty, by creating the uncertainty budget for each practical test. The combination of the uncertainty components and the normalized error between each group of students and the professor provided data related to the calculation of the student’s grades and the subsequent observation of which method seems to be the most suitable for classroom use.

Measurements, Analysis Techniques and Experiments in Sound and Vibration : Applied to Operational MRI Scanners and in Remote Laboratories.

Khan, Imran January 2017 (has links)
High quality noise and vibration measurements outside of a laboratory environment on real life structures and applications are not trivial. True boundary and operating conditions enforce unique challenges on the measurements. Measurements in hazardous situations such as high magnetic fields, and high temperature environments, etc., where ordinary measurement equipment and methods may not be employed, require further precautions. Post measurements objectives such as analysis, design and strategic decisions, e.g., control, rely heavily on the quality and integrity of the measurements (data). The quality of the experimental data is highly correlated with the on-field expertise. Practical or hands-on experience with measurements can be imparted to prospective students, researchers and technicians in the form of laboratory experiments involving real equipment and practical applications. However, achieving expertise in the field of sound and vibration measurements in general and their active control in particular is a time consuming and expensive process. Consequently most institutions can only afford a single setup, resulting in the compromise of the quality of expertise. In this thesis, the challenges in the field of sound and vibration measurements in high magnetic field are addressed. The analysis and measurement of vibration transferred from an operational magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to adjacent floors is taken as an example. Improvised experimental measurement methods and custom-made frequency analysis techniques are proposed in order to address the challenges and study the vibration transfer. The methods may be extended to other operational industrial machinery and hazardous environments. To encourage and develop expertise in the field of acoustic/vibration measurements and active noise control on practical test beds, remotely controlled laboratory setups are introduced. The developed laboratory setup, which is accessed and controlled via the Internet, is the first of its kind in the active noise control and acoustic measurements area. The laboratory setup can be shared and utilized 24/7 globally, thus reducing the associated costs and eliminating time restrictions.

The impact of quality assurance systems on the operational performance of laboratories

Ratsoeu, Ellen 30 May 2013 (has links)
M.Tech. (Operations Management) / It has become a trend for organisations to implement and certify quality systems. The most common quality system that organisations currently implement is ISO 9001. Certification to ISO 9001 has in recent times been used as a marketing tool to enter new markets. Nowadays, customers expect their suppliers and potential suppliers to be certified to ISO 9001. It has become a primary requirement for doing business, and customers now demand it. There have been various studies conducted to establish the advantages of ISO 9001 and its impact on organisational performance. Laboratories are no exception to this developing trend. They are implementing laboratory quality standards like ISO 17025 and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development Good Laboratory Practice (OECD GLP). Some laboratories are now applying for certification of compliance to laboratory standards. Implementing and certifying laboratory systems is an exercise that comes at a cost. The exercise is demanding in terms of human resources, time and capital. There has not been a study conducted to evaluate the impact of these systems on the operational performance of laboratories. This is the reason that resulted in identification of the need to conduct the study. A qualitative research approach was pursued in conducting the study, where the researcher investigated the impact of laboratory quality standards on the operational performance of commercial and non-commercial laboratories. Operational performance in this study is defined as health and safety; supplier selection and performance; human resources; customer satisfaction and profitability. Data was collected through interviews, and was then summarised, and analysed in order to address the research problem. Based on the data collected, it was concluded there is no notable difference in the performance of laboratories with or without quality assurance systems such as ISO 17025 and OECD GLP.
