The aim of this study is to analyse the variation between infinitive and finite verb adverbial clauses in European Portuguese. In order to understand this variation, three central questions are raised: (1) What determines the use of the uninflected vs. the inflected infinitive in same-subject adverbial clauses? (2) What does the pronoun SE signal in these adverbial clauses? (3) What difference is there between the use of the inflected infinitives vs. finite verbs in different subject adverbial clauses?

Earlier investigations about these three questions are discussed. PALM: Predicting Internet Network Distances Using Peer-to-Peer Measurements

Lehman, Li-wei, Lerman, Steven 01 1900 (has links)
Landmark-based architecture has been commonly adopted in the networking community as a mechanism to measure and characterize a host's location on the Internet. In most existing landmark based approaches, end hosts use the distance measurements to a common, fixed set of landmarks to derive an estimated location on the Internet. This paper investigates whether it is possible for participating peer nodes in an overlay network to collaboratively construct an accurate geometric model of its topology in a completely decentralized peer-to-peer fashion, without using a fixed set of landmarks. We call such a peer-to-peer approach in topology discovery and modeling using landmarks PALM (Peers As LandMarks). We evaluate the performance characteristics of such a decentralized coordinates-based approach under several factors, including dimensionality of the geometric space, peer distance distribution, and the number of peer-to-peer distance measurements used. We evaluate two PALM-based schemes: RAND-PALM and ISLAND. In RAND-PALM, a peer node randomly selects from existing peer nodes as its landmarks. In ISLAND (Intelligent Selection of Landmarks), each peer node selects its landmarks by exploiting the topological information derived based on existing peer nodes' coordinates values. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

An Implementation Of Mono And Stereo Slam System Utilizing Efficient Map Management Strategy

Kalay, Adnan 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
For an autonomous mobile robot, localization and map building are vital capabilities. The localization ability provides the robot location information, so the robot can navigate in the environment. On the other hand, the robot can interact with its environment using a model of the environment (map information) which is provided by map building mechanism. These two capabilities depends on each other and simultaneous operation of them is called SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Map Building). While various sensors are used for this algorithm, vision-based approaches are relatively new and have attracted more interest in recent years. In this thesis work, a versatile Visual SLAM system is constructed and presented. In the core of this work is a vision-based simultaneous localization and map building algorithm which uses point features in the environment as visual landmarks and Extended Kalman Filter for state estimation. A detailed analysis of this algorithm is made including state estimation, feature extraction and data association steps. The algorithm is extended to be used for both stereo and single camera systems. The core of both algorithms is same and we mention the differences of both algorithms originated from the measurement dissimilarity. The algorithm is run also in different motion modes, namely predefined, manual and autonomous. Secondly, a map management strategy is developed especially for extended environments. When the robot runs the SLAM algorithm in large environments, the constructed map contains a great number of landmarks obviously. The efficiency algorithm takes part, when the total number of features exceeds a critical value for the system. In this case, the current map is rarefied without losing the geometrical distribution of the landmarks. Furthermore, a well-organized graphical user interface is implemented which enables the operator to select operational modes, change various parameters of the main SLAM algorithm and see the results of the SLAM operation both textually and graphically. Finally, a basic mission concept is defined in our system, in order to illustrate what robot can do using the outputs of the SLAM algorithm. All of these ideas mentioned are implemented in this thesis, experiments are conducted using a real robot and the analysis results are discussed by comparing the algorithm outputs with ground-truth measurements.

Att skylta lagom : Ett examensarbete om att finna balans mellan frihet och struktur i informationsförmedlingen i en utställningsmiljö.

Wikström, Karolin January 2015 (has links)
This is a study about the balance between freedom and structure in the information design of an exhibition based on hands-on education. Work is focused on the exhibition The Human Body at Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje. The exhibition, which was built in 1997, was designed with the idea that signs create barriers and a reluctance to advertise about the "right way". The exhibition space has now been compressed and experiments have been grouped into two sections. In connection with this change, the signs in the exhibition come to be reviewed. This is because parents and other adult visitors expressed a desire for more information. The need for information is divided into labels for individual experiments and signage for the exhibition's theme. How this demand can be met without going against the pedagogy and aesthetics that Tom Tits believe is the central point of the work. The solution was based on the thesis that it is possible to gather information at one point to minimize the number of signs in the exhibition. Through methods as qualitative interviews, questionnaire survey and spatial analysis have an understanding of the complexity of the problem created. Which largely deals with the contrasts between the child's curiosity and the controlling adult world. The design solution that has been developed, resulting in three (instead of one) points where the focus has been on establishing the exhibition's theme and encourage interactivity. There has also been a quest for uniformity and flexibility, then the problem is not found to the current exhibition and information design throughout the house lacks a common thread. Whereupon consideration has been given to Tom Tits visual profile and the aesthetic that is seen as characteristic of the business. Studies circuits thus largely about Tom Tits, but it is hoped that the work interests a number of players, then a pursuit of general guidelines for the transmission of information have existed.

Concepts of the sacred in place : reconciling mindscapes and landscapes.

Church, Michelle 07 April 2010 (has links)
The concepts and issues surrounding the study of sacred places represent a complex interaction of mindscapes and landscapes. Using as the main examples Stonehenge and the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, this thesis is about these interactions in natural, community sacred places and serves two main purposes. The first is to clarify the meaning of -sacred- and the application of sacred designation to natural places. The second is to explore options for the protection. conservation and restoration of such places. In addition. an interpretation of cultural issues surrounding the understanding of the sacred in place explores and explains the connections between worldviews, stories or mythologies, and sense of place in sacred places so that a better understanding can be reached of the paradigms that underlie our conception of the sacred and of nature. and by extension, the sacred in nature. This in turn serves to illuminate the recommendation of focal restoration techniques to restore sacred places.

Vesterinen, Rainer January 2006 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyse the variation between infinitive and finite verb adverbial clauses in European Portuguese. In order to understand this variation, three central questions are raised: (1) What determines the use of the uninflected vs. the inflected infinitive in same-subject adverbial clauses? (2) What does the pronoun SE signal in these adverbial clauses? (3) What difference is there between the use of the inflected infinitives vs. finite verbs in different subject adverbial clauses? Earlier investigations about these three questions are discussed. One conclusion of this review is that former research almost exclusively has been conducted from a traditional or formalistic point of view that has given priority to structural descriptions instead of semantic or conceptual explanations. In contrast to this, the present study endeavours to examine these issues from a cognitive linguistic perspective. It is claimed that the use of the inflected infinitive in adverbial same-subject clauses may be explained by contextual factors which create a cognitive need to highlight the subject of the adverbial clause. Further, an analysis about how the grammatical micro-context can determine the interpretation of the clitic pronoun SE as a marker for a generic trajector is conducted. It is also argued that the difference between infinitive and finite adverbial clauses can bee explained by means of theories of subjectification and mental spaces. The conclusion is drawn that a cognitive approach to grammar can, indeed, shed light on the issues considered. In particular, it is shown that different adverbial constructions can express different conceptual meaning. In the light of this fact, other issues concerned with finite and infinite verb forms are raised.

Nejistota modelů hlubokého učení při analýze lékařských obrazových dat / Deep Learning Model Uncertainty in Medical Image Analysis

Drevický, Dušan January 2019 (has links)
