Social Change, Gender and Education: Exceptional Swedish Immigrant Women at North Park College, 1900-1920

Wright, Sofia A.T. Hiort 01 January 2006 (has links)
The present study focused on the educational and career experiences of four selected Swedish immigrant women at North Park College in Chicago from 1900-1920. There is a gap in the extant literature with regard to the Swedish immigrant women experiences, and this study attempted to shed some light on this fascinating topic. The study examined the lives of three selected Swedish immigrant women students at the College and their lives afterwards as missionaries in China. It also examined the life of Lena Sahlstrom, a faculty member at North Park College during the same period. The four women were exceptional individuals, each in her own way a pioneer. Hilma Johnson studied business for one year at North Park College before becoming the Covenant Church's first woman missionary to China in 1901, a commitment she maintained for 40 years. Hilda Rodberg was the first female graduate of the Swedish Covenant Hospital Nursing School in 1900, and she became a missionary in China for over thirty years. Victoria Welter was the first woman to graduate from North Park College's Seminary Department in 1903, after which she, too, left for China to serve as a missionary, where she married John Sjoquist, a medical missionary. Welter was the only one of the four to marry, and after the death of her husband in 1917 she returned to Chicago to complete her children's formal education.Caroline "Lena" Sahlstrom was the first female faculty member at North Park College. She was a teacher in the Primary Department and the Music Department, and she also served as the Dean of Women during part of her long tenure at North Park College. Her contributions to the school and the students were impressive, and she was a committed educator of her time. Each of the four women valued education and religion, and each was influenced in various ways by their experiences at North Park College. Hilma Johnson, Hilda Rodberg, and Victoria Welter chose professional careers as missionaries in China where they ministered to many people through teaching and health care. Influenced by her educational and religious background, Lena Sahlstrom chose to join the faculty at North Park College where her years of service and various roles impacted the lives of many students. While economic advancement was not a goal for any of the four, they all chose professional careers and lives of commitment that differed from the traditional roles filled by most women of their day. All four were role models who made a difference in many peoples lives.

Strandelin, Ida January 2017 (has links)
The stated aim of building the Swedish welfare state ("Folkhemmet") was to develop a modern society that contained equality between social classes. Interestingly, though, class inequalities still exist but have become obscured by an endeavour to reach cultural recognition with a particular focus on multiculturalism. This paper seeks to demonstrate the production and reproduction of class inequalities in Lena Andersson's novel Var det bra så?. Nancy Fraser's theory of redistribution and recognition is used to highlight the complexity and intersection of culture, ethnicity, gender and class. In that context, it is claimed that class inequalities have to be separated from cultural discrimination when the aim is to examine the establishment of social inequalities. Fraser argues that socio-economic segregation has to be seen in the light of economic and cultural inequalities as being two separate phenomena, even though they clearly are interrelated. Var det bra så? is here viewed as a critique of the Swedish welfare state ("Folkhemmet") as a political concept. The novel depicts how the focus on and belief in multiculturalism as central for the development of society has entailed a marginalization and culturalization of class.

Klasskildringar i samtida arbetarlitteratur. En idéanalytisk studie / Portrayals of Class in Contemporary Working Class Literature. An Analysis of Ideas

Eriksson, Elina, Nordin, Sofia January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to examine the portrayals of class in four Swedish contemporary novels that have been mentioned as working class literature in the literary public sphere. During the 20th century, society has undergone vast changes due to globalization and technology development. The rise in standards of living for most people in the Western societies has led to changed consumption patterns. In consequence, there has been increased emphasis given to cultural rather than materialist explanations of social stratification. The theoretical approach of this study is based on class theories that emphasize either materialist or cultural explanations of social stratification. The methodology used is based on the analysis of ideas. In order to examine the portrayals of class in the four novels, an analysis scheme has been constructed on the bases of theories of Marx, Weber, Bourdieu and Giddens. The ideal types used are as follows: Economic capital, Cultural capital, Class in itself – class for itself, Production, exploitation, profit, Consumption, lifestyles, taste, Status and Societal change. The study argues that in spite of the fact that cultural conditions such as cultural capital and consumption patterns are evident markers of class belonging, the determining factor for class belonging is economic conditions, especially for the underclass. It also argues that the main purpose of contemporary working class literature is to criticize the class society and social inequity. Another central theme is societal change and how this affects working life and social stratification. The novels are permeated with the dichotomies we – they and power – powerlessness. There is a pessimistic picture of society that appears in the novels, where solidarity has disappeared and the characters express feelings of resignation and despair. / Uppsatsnivå: D

The chamber vocal works of Gabriela Lena Frank

Neher, Lisa Rose Julianna 01 December 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to introduce readers to the music of living American composer Gabriela Lena Frank (b. 1972) through her chamber vocal works and to provide a resource to aid in the interpretation and performance of her music. Frank is an internationally recognized composer with a thriving career. However, she is not widely known among singers and teachers of singing and scholarship on her music is quite limited. This study seeks to fill that void by examining Frank’s published works as of January 2016 for solo voice and up to six instruments. These works are Cuatro Canciones Andinas (1999), for mezzo-soprano and piano; New Andean Songs (2008), for soprano, mezzo-soprano, two percussionists, and two pianos; Seven Armenian Songs (2013), for soprano, percussionist, and solo violin; and Honey (2013), for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and piano. Frank’s chamber vocal pieces are excellent additions to the repertoire and notable for Frank’s chamber music aesthetic, choice of diverse texts and languages (English, Spanish, and Armenian), dramatic storytelling, range of musical colors, and idiomatic writing for the performers. Frank’s ongoing exploration of her Peruvian heritage is reflected in two of these works, which draw inspiration from Andean folk music and poetry. This essay provides a brief biography of Frank; original poetic and musical analyses of the four works, exploring the areas of poetry, form, melody and motive, text painting, rhythm, harmony, folk influences, vocal writing, instrumental writing, timbre, range, and tessitura; and a summary of stylistic traits as seen across this sample. Poetic and word for word translations of foreign language texts, pronunciation guidelines for Latin American Spanish and International Phonetic Alphabet transliterations for the Armenian poems are included.

Staveryd, Caisa January 2007 (has links)

Rydberg, Anna January 2013 (has links)

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a continuous improvement methodology used to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of production processes by eliminating waste and reducing its variability. Although there are researches on this methodology in companies of the manufacturing sector, few studies are directed to its application in the footwear sector. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose guidelines for the implementation of LSS in micro, small and medium enterprises of footwear. In order to direct the accomplishment of eight case studies in footwear MSMEs, the principles of LSS were identified in the scientific literature, verified in the reality of the companies studied. The instruments of data collection for these case studies were semi-structured interviews with managers and collaborators, documentary analysis and on-site visit. In the analysis of the cases it was identified that the companies, although they do not use the LSS, have practices that can facilitate their implementation. As well as there are difficulties that need to be overcome so that implementation can take place effectively. These possibilities and difficulties were the basis of the guidelines developed for the implementation of LSS in MSMEs. The LSS principles found in MSMEs for footwear were: to develop and maintain a long-term philosophy, focus on the customer, develop leaders, develop people and professional teams, challenge and respect the network of partners and suppliers, create a culture of continuous improvement, Use LSS tools, pull systems (JIT), focus on the perfection of products, processes and services, eliminate waste and reduce variability. This research contributes to fill the gap in the literature regarding the lack of proposals for the implementation of LSS in MSMEs of footwear (scientific contribution) and allows entrepreneurs in the industry to identify practices that favor the improvement of the management of their companies' processes (applied contribution). / CAPES: 9183/2012
