Design, Analysis, And Characterization Of Metamaterial Quasi-Optical Components For Millimeter-Wave Automotive Radar

<p>Since their introduction by Mercedes Benz in the late 1990s, W-band radars operating at 76-77 GHz have found their way into more and more passenger cars. These automotive radars are typically used in adaptive cruise control, pre-collision sensing, and other driver assistance systems. While these systems are usually only about the size of two stacked cigarette packs, system size, and weight remains a concern for many automotive manufacturers.</p><p>In this dissertation, I discuss how artificially structured metamaterials can be used to improve lens-based automotive radar systems. Metamaterials allow the fabrication of smaller and lighter systems, while still meeting the frequency, high gain, and cost requirements of this application. In particular, I focus on the development of planar artificial dielectric lenses suitable for use in place of the injection-molded lenses now used in many automotive radar systems.</p><p>I begin by using analytic and numerical ray-tracing to compare the performance of planar metamaterial GRIN lenses to equivalent aspheric refractive lenses. I do this to determine whether metamaterials are best employed in GRIN or refractive automotive radar lenses. Through this study I find that planar GRIN lenses with the large refractive index ranges enabled by metamaterials have approximately optically equivalent performance to equivalent refractive lenses for fields of view approaching ±20°. I also find that the uniaxial nature of most planar metamaterials does not negatively impact planar GRIN lens performance.</p><p>I then turn my attention to implementing these planar GRIN lenses at W-band automotive radar frequencies. I begin by designing uniform sheets of W-band electrically-coupled LC resonator-based metamaterials. These metamaterial samples were fabricated by the Jokerst research group on glass and liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrates and tested at Toyota Research Institute- North America (TRI-NA). When characterized at W-band frequencies, these metamaterials show material properties closely matching those predicted by full-wave simulations.</p><p>Due to the high losses associated with resonant metamaterials, I shift my focus to non-resonant metamaterials. I discuss the design, fabrication, and testing of non-resonant metamaterials for fabrication on multilayer LCP printed circuit boards (PCBs). I then use these non-resonant metamaterials in a W-band planar metamaterial GRIN lens. Radiation pattern measurements show that this lens functions as a strong collimating element.</p><p>Using similar lens design methods, I design a metamaterial GRIN lens from polytetrafluoroethylene-based (PTFE-based) non-resonant metamaterials. This GRIN lens is designed to match a target dielectric lens's radiation characteristics across a ±6° field of view. Measurements at automotive radar frequencies show that this lens has approximately the same radiation characteristics as the target lens across the desired field of view.</p><p>Finally, I describe the development of electrically reconfigurable metamaterials using thin-film silicon semiconductors. These silicon-based reconfigurable metamaterials were developed in close collaboration with several other researchers. My major contribution to the development of these reconfigurable metamaterials consisted of the initial metamaterial design. The Jokerst research group fabricated this initial design while TRI-NA characterized the fabricated metamaterial experimentally. Measurements showed approximately 8% variation in transmission under a 5 Volt DC bias. This variation in transmission closely matched the variation in transmission predicted by coupled electronic-electromagnetic simulation run by Yaroslav Urzhumov, one of other contributors to the development of the reconfigurable metamaterial.</p> / Dissertation

Millimeter-Wave Band Pass Distributed Amplifier for Low-Cost Active Multi-Beam Antennas

Recently, there have been a great interest in the millimeter-wave (mmW) and terahertz (THz) bands due to the unique features they provide for various applications. For example, the mmW is not significantly affected by the atmospheric constraints and it can penetrate through clothing and other dielectric materials. Therefore, it is suitable for a vast range of imaging applications such as vision, safety, health, environmental studies, security and non-destructive testing. Millimeter-wave imaging systems have been conventionally used for high end applications implementing sophisticated and expensive technologies. Recent advancements in the silicon integrated and low loss material passive technologies have created a great opportunity to study the feasibility of low cost mmW imaging systems. However, there are several challenges to be addressed first. Examples are modeling of active and passive devices and their low performance, highly attenuated channel and poor signal to noise ratio in the mmW. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate and develop new technologies enabling cost-effective implementation of mmW and sub-mmW imaging systems. To achieve this goal, an integrated active Rotman lens architecture is proposed as an ultimate solution to combine the unique properties of a Rotman lens with the superiority of CMOS technology for fabrication of cost effective integrated mmW systems. However, due to the limited sensitivity of on-chip detectors in the mmW, a large number of high gain, wide-band and miniaturized mmW Low Noise Amplifiers (LNA) are required to implement the proposed integrated Rotman lens architecture. A unique solution presented in this thesis is the novel Band Pass Distributed Amplifier (BPDA) topology. In this new topology, by short circuiting the line terminations in a Conventional Distributed Amplifier (CDA), standing waves are created in its artificial transmission lines. Conventionally, standing waves are strongly avoided by carefully matching these lines to 50 ?? in order to prevent instability of the amplifier. This causes that a large portion of the signal be absorbed in these resistive terminations. In this thesis, it is shown that due to presence of highly lossy parasitics of CMOS transistor at the mmW the amplifier stability is inherently achieved. Moreover, by eliminating these lossy and noise terminations in the CDA, the amplifier gain is boosted and its noise figure is reduced. In addition, a considerable decrease in the number of elements enables low power realization of many amplifiers in a small chip area. Using the lumped element model of the transistor, the transfer function of a single stage BPDAs is derived and compared to its conventional counter part. A methodology to design a single stage BPDA to achieve all the design goals is presented. Using the presented design guidelines, amplifiers for different mmW frequencies have been designed, fabricated and tested. Using only 4 transistors, a 60 GHz amplifier is fabricated on a very small chip area of 0.105 mm2 by a low-cost 130 nm CMOS technology. A peak gain of 14.7 dB and a noise figure of 6 dB are measured for this fabricated amplifier. oreover, it is shown that by further circuit optimization, high gain amplification can be realized at frequencies above the cut-off frequency of the transistor. Simulations show 32 and 28 dB gain can be obtained by implementing only 6 transistors using this CMOS technology at 60 and 77 GHz. A 4-stage 85 GHz amplifier is also designed and fabricated and a measured gain of 10 dB at 82 GHz is achieved with a 3 dB bandwidth of 11 GHz from 80 to 91 GHz. A good agreement between the simulated and measured results verifies the accuracy of the design procedure. In addition, a multi-stage wide-band BPDA has been designed to show the ability of the proposed topology for design of wide band mmW amplifiers using the CMOS technology. Simulated gain of 20.5 dB with a considerable 3 dB bandwidth of 38 GHz from 30 to 68 GHz is achieved while the noise figure is less than 6 dB in the whole bandwidth. An amplifier figure of merit is defined in terms of gain, noise figure, chip area, band width and power consumption. The results are compared to those of the state of the art to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed circuit topology and presented design techniques. Finally, a Rotman lens is designed and optimized by choosing a very small Focal Lens Ratio (FL), and a high measured efficiency of greater than 30% is achieved while the lens dimensions are less than 6 mm. The lens is designed and implemented using a low cost Alumina substrate and conventional microstrip lines to ease its integration with the active parts of the system.

Expression and function of heat shock factors in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Heat shock proteins (hsp) and heat shock transcription factors (HSF) have important roles in the development of the eye lens. Our lab previously demonstrated that knockdown of hsp70 gene expression using morpholino antisense technology (MO) resulted in a small lens phenotype in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. A less severe phenotype was seen with knockdown of hsf1, suggesting other factors that regulate hsp70 are involved during lens formation. Both HSF1 and HSF4 are known to play a role in mammalian lens development. An expressed sequence tag encoding zebrafish HSF4, named hsf4a, has been identified and a second splice variant, hsf4b, has been predicted in the Ensembl database. The objectives of this thesis were to characterize the zebrafish HSF4 and compare its expression to other HSFs as well as investigate its role in lens development. Analysis of zebrafish HSF4 sequence was performed using standard in silico analytical software. The deduced amino acid sequence of HSF4a shares structural similarities with mammalian HSF4 including the lack of an HR-C domain. This domain is absent due to a C-terminal truncation within zebrafish HSF4a relative to the mammalian protein. HSF4b is identical to the HSF4a sequence with the exception of an additional 155 amino acids at the carboxyl end of the protein which contains an HR-C domain, unlike mammalian HSF4. Surprisingly, electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) demonstrated that the binding affinity of zebrafish HSF4 to discontinuous HSEs is more similar to HSF1 than to other HSF4 proteins. The amino acid sequence of zebrafish HSF4 DNA binding domain was also more similar to HSF1 than other HSF4 proteins. These results, along with a phylogenetic analysis of HSF proteins from eleven species, suggest that HSF1 was an evolutionary precursor of HSF4 and that functions of this protein may differ between zebrafish and mammals. The expression level for each of the three zebrafish HSFs was determined in adult tissues and in developing embryos by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis. Expression of both hsf4 transcripts was observed predominantly in the eye but only observed in developing embryonic tissue at 60 hours post fertilization or later. This, together with the lack of an observable phenotype following MO knockdown of hsf4, suggests that HSF4 likely has a role in later stages of lens development. Additionally, hsf1 and hsf2 expression were detected in all tissues and in all stages of development as well as being present as maternal transcripts in zebrafish eggs. The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that while zebrafish HSFs share some similarity with HSF proteins from other species, they also have structural characteristics and expression patterns unique to the zebrafish.

Chronicling the Shifts: Using the Body Lens to Analyze Policy for High Need Women Offenders

This thesis uses an exploratory case study design to chronicle the shifts, recognition, and implementation of programs, tools and policies designed for high need federally sentenced women in Canada that were created after 1990, in accordance with or opposed to the gender specific principles outlined in the Creating Choices (1990) report. The body lens is used as an analytic tool to deconstruct eleven of the most pertinent documents regarding policy and strategy for high need women offenders that were implemented by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) personnel and the Office of the Correctional Investigator (OCI) over the past twenty years. Coding of a wide range of documents reveals that despite appearing to be rhetorically progressive, CSC’s attempt at creating a women-centered mental health strategy uses contradictory disciplinary techniques that control and restrain the bodies of federally sentenced women in hopes of normalizing the behaviours of high need women. The policies imposed by CSC for high need women offenders fail to make any substantial changes in women’s prison reform and resulted in a different form of regulation and control. High need women offenders are imprisoned in their own bodies.

Predictions of postoperative visual outcome in subjects with cataract: a preoperative and postoperative study.

Aim: To assess the ability of critical flicker frequency (CFF) and optimal reading speed (ORS) to predict the potential vision in patients with cataract with and without ocular comorbidity. Methods: The two novel tests were compared with two well established potential vision tests (PVTs), the potential acuity meter (PAM) and the laser interferometer (LI). Measurements were made preoperatively in 1 eye of 88 subjects using the battery of 4 PVTs. Postoperative measurements were made with the CFF and the ORS. The subjects studied were consecutive cases over a 12-month period who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and agreed to participate in this study. Results: CFF was the PVT most resistant to the presence of cataract. Both CFF and ORS give a similar predictive precision in the presence of cataract and ocular comorbidity, although CFF seems more precise when the cataract is dense. Conclusions: The PAM and the LI showed a limited clinical capability in predicting postoperative visual acuity, particularly with dense opacities. The CFF shows the most promise as a PVT, particularly with dense cataract. Further evaluation is required for both CFF and ORS.

MANIPULATION OF OCULAR ABERRATIONS IN MYOPES

Myopia is a major cause of vision loss throughout the world. High myopia is associated with severe eye diseases like maculopathy, retinal detachment and glaucoma. The prevalence of myopia is increasing, and varies by country and by ethnic group. In some Asian populations the prevalence is 70%-80%.  This thesis includes five experiments. In experiment I we investigated the effects of added positive and negative spherical aberration on accommodative response accuracy. We found that the accommodative response can be altered by modulating the spherical aberration of the eye with soft contact lenses. There was an improvement in the accommodative response slopes and a decrease in the lag of accommodation with the negative spherical aberration lenses compared to positive spherical aberration lenses.  In experiment II we investigated whether the negative spherical aberration in contact lenses could be tolerated visually in terms of wearability and comfort. We found that all the subjects were satisfied with the contact lens comfort, distance and near vision and the stability of the vision with the lenses. The accommodative response was stable through out the treatment period. In experiment III we investigated the efficacy of a novel dual treatment for the improvement of accommodative accuracy and dynamics in myopes. The spherical aberration of the eye was effectively altered to negative in the treatment group as predicted. In the control group as expected there was no significant change in the spherical aberration of the eye with and without contact lenses. The treatment lenses decreased the lag of accommodation and increased the accommodative response slope at 3 months. In the experiment IV we investigated the effect of the treatment lenses used in the previous experiment on high and low contrast visual acuities after a one year treatment period. The results showed a significant improvement in both high and low contrast visual acuities after the one year period in the treatment group compared to the control group, even though it was not clinically significant. In experiment V we investigated the intrasession repeatability of peripheral aberrations using COAS-HD VR aberrometer and also reported the distribution of higher order aberrations in a group of young emmetropes. There was no significant difference in the variance of total higher-order RMS between on- and off-axis measurements. There was a significant change in the horizontal coma, spherical aberration and higher-order RMS with off-axis angle along the horizontal visual field. We demonstrated that fast, repeatable and valid peripheral aberration measurements can be obtained with this instrument. This thesis contributes new results in this field of myopia, aberration and accommodation.

Performance Improvement Of A 3-d Configuration Reconstruction Algorithm For An Object Using A Single Camera Image

Performance improvement of a 3-D configuration reconstruction algorithm using a passive secondary target has been focused in this study. In earlier studies, a theoretical development of the 3-D configuration reconstruction algorithm was achieved and it was implemented by a computer program on a system consisting of an optical bench and a digital imaging system. The passive secondary target used was a circle with two internal spots. In order to use this reconstruction algorithm in autonomous systems, an automatic target recognition algorithm has been developed in this study. Starting from a pre-captured and stored 8-bit gray-level image, the algorithm automatically detects the elliptical image of a circular target and determines its contour in the scene. It was shown that the algorithm can also be used for partially captured elliptical images. Another improvement achieved in this study is the determination of internal camera parameters of the vision system.

Inhibitiory Effects Of Plant Originated Extracts On Bovine Lens Aldose Reductase

Aldose reductase, E.C.1.1.1.21, catalyzes the reduction of different types of aldehydes to their corresponding alcohols, and especially reduces various aldo-sugars using NADPH as the coenzyme. Under hyperglycemic conditions aldose reductase is involved in the development of diabetic complications. As a result, interest has been placed over the years on the development of potent aldose reductase inhibitors for possible use in the therapy of these severe diabetic complications. In this study, aldose reductase was isolated from bovine lens by differential centrifugation and ammonium sulfate precipitation. The conditions for the enzyme assay / such as substrate (DL-Glyceraldehyde) and coenzyme (NADPH) concentration, protein amount, effect of sulfate ions, temperature and pH on the enzyme activity were optimized. The inhibitory effects of Punica granatum, Spinacia olaeracea, Allium cepa Allium porrum, Malus flouribunda, Malus domestica extracts were tested on crude bovine lens aldose reductase. Four different types of organic fractions from each crude plant extract were obtained by solvent fractionation. The inhibitory activity of these organic fractions was calculated considering the aldose reductase activity without extracts as 100 %. All six plants were found to inhibit aldose reductase activity to different extent. Among these fractions obtained as / petroleum ether, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. Highest inhibitory activity was found for the ethyl acetate fraction. The IC50 values of ethyl acetate fractions of all these plants was calculated as, 25.46 &micro / g/ml, 20.5 &micro / g/ml, 18.5 &micro / g/ml, 12.32 &micro / g/ml, 6.45 &micro / g/ml, 5.4 &micro / g/ml, for Allium porrum, Malus domestica, Spinacia olaeracea, Malus floribunda Allium cepa, Punica granatum respectively.

Extended Depth Optical Coherence Tomography for Anterior Segment and Accommodation Imaging in Real-Time.

The changes in the human crystalline lens shape and its internal structure during accommodation and with aging are a fundamental component of the dynamic mechanism of accommodation and presbyopia, the loss of near vision with age. A better understanding of the crystalline lens changes during accommodation will help in developing new treatments to correct for presbyopia. The goal of this dissertation is to design and develop an imaging system to study the dynamic changes in lens shape during accommodative response. An imaging system based on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was developed with long axial range, high axial and lateral resolution and high speed for in vivo imaging the anterior segment along its entire length at video-rate. A slit-lamp mounted optical delivery scanning device for the extended depth SD-OCT system was developed. The delivery system was combined with a custom made unit that provides accommodation and disaccommodation step stimuli. A method to correct for the distortions of the OCT images was also developed that provides corrected two dimensional biometric data at different accommodative states.
