Sobre o direito de ser normal : identidades normalizadas e a construção das políticas públicas de saúde para gays e lésbicas na cidade de São Paulo /

Nardelli, Rachel D'Amico. January 2014 (has links)
Abstract: During the 1980s the world sees a new disease appears, reached the peripheral sexualities, especially gay men, speeches and populated pictures fears and new medical terms: Kaposi's sarcoma, Grid, disease 5H, gay cancer. All these were ways to designate what in 1983 was known as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Bringing a sexual panic with the need to manage this disease, AIDS was able to articulate throughout its 30 years the device of sexuality and power devices and medical know-silent and very effective of Biopolitics. The biopolitics or biopower, to Michel Foucault's exactly the way it managed the life Pest epidemics, pandemics, these are terms that designate diseases that must be contained, they afflict large-scale population, undermining the economic relationship, with the decrease of active subjects, in addition to producing a large burden for the state with treatments. The discourses regarding AIDS have this normalizing character, double danger, blood and sex, articulated this device that tries to manage life through surveillance, rule and regulation of the body. In Brazil, these technologies were centras in gay bodies, in a historical moment in which these identities emerging homosexuality had his life crossed by AIDS, interestingly, this is exactly what has initiated the process of searching for visibility and democratic rights in the movement known as lgbt. / Mestre

Os efeitos de personagens LGBTs de telenovelas na formação de opinião dos telespectadores sobre a homossexualidade / The effects of LGBT characters acting in latin soap operas on viewer s opinion formation about sexual orientation diversity

Trindade, Welton Danner 21 May 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:18:40Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Welton Danner Trindade.pdf: 1053802 bytes, checksum: 592602589efc26f80b7142f3741945a4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-05-21 / Since 2000, Brazil has had great progress about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite, transsexual (LGBT) citizenship and about political, social and economic issues. Since 2003, many Latin soap operas have taken part in this scene systematically, most of them at 9.00 p.m. on Globo channel. The scripts are usually about homophobia and these people challenge of reaching equal state rights and acceptance in their society. This research aims the analysis of this matter exposure as the main issue on that kind of TV program and its influence on forming opinion about it on viewers over 16 who live in Distrito Federal. For it, and as a way to contribute to methodological debate of the studies tradition in Brazil, different from quantitative researches, it was given to 260 viewers corresponding to sex, age and social status audience a questionnaire .It s noticed the greater amount of female viewers (65%) compared to males ( 35%), which reinforces the characteristic of these soap operas as a product developed mainly for women, something that is attached to the origin of this kind of TV program is called radionovela ( a kind of romance narrated on the radio, it was a common radio program in Brazil in the first half of the 20th century, later on TV in 1951).The soap operas as much as any other kind of TV program have lost their audience in Brazil since 1951, but unconventional plots have changed it. This research was mostly based on Cultural Studies of Birmingham and Mediation Theories, by Jesús Martín Barbero, who disagrees that the message spoken by any speaker is completely comprehensible for its listeners and that the message has a complete and single meaning. On the contrary, the meaning is utter when it interacts with the listener, which is active in this process. This analysis got important contribution from the multimediation perspectives, by Guillermo Orozco Gómez, who says that it is necessary seeing the listeners from the social groups they belong to. As a conclusion, it s seen that homosexual characters shown on these soap operas have great influence on viewer´s acceptance to homosexual people, so it contributes to a change of view about this issue / Desde 2000, o Brasil tem passado por avanços importantes no que concerne à cidadania de lésbicas, gays, bissexuais, travestis e transexuais (LGBT) e ao respeito a esse segmento nas áreas política, social e econômica.

On Being Trans: Narrative, Identity, Performance, and Community

Brown, Chloe Jo 01 April 2018 (has links)
This thesis focuses on various topics related to transgender identity and culture. Through a combination of ethnographic and secondary research, I studied transgender coming out narratives, trans media representation, transgender performance and identity, and conceptualizations of group and chosen family in a community of trans students, the WKU Transgender and Non-Binary Student Group. The three chapters of my thesis address some of the traditional milestones of a trans person’s acculturation: coming out, constructing one’s newly discovered trans identity, and finding community. Chapter 1 explores coming out as transgender, and the way in in which coming out is valued and discussed within trans communities. Chapter 2 discusses transgender representation, and how gender presentation is contested and complicated by transfolk. Chapter 2 also addresses trans media representation, and the way in which transfolk create their own media representation in the absence of adequate and accurate trans representation in popular culture. Chapter 3 provides an in-depth analysis of the WKU Transgender and Non-Binary Student Group, discusses how the group functions as a chosen family, and explores the way in which group membership helps group members mitigate stigma and deal with trauma.

Looking the Part: An Examination of Longitudinal Gender Presentation Among Children with Gay, Lesbian, and Heterosexual Adoptive Parents

Bruun, Samuel T. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Gender presentation, appearing in a way that fits social expectations of one’s gender role, represents one of the most obvious ways in which one’s gender identity becomes salient to others. This quality is especially relevant to note given the continued controversy surrounding children’s gender role development when raised by non-heterosexual parents. The current study is an examination of how gender presentation develops in adopted children with lesbian, gay, and heterosexual parents across two time points (Wave 1: N = 106, Mage = 36.07 months; Wave 2: N = 90, Mage = 8.34). Children’s gender presentation was analyzed using a novel coding scheme, consisting of several variables meant to target the presence of gender typed clothing. These elements of appearance were compared with several measures of child outcomes. It was found that children generally adhere to presentation elements of their assigned gender and there were limited differences by parental sexual orientation in any of the gender presentation variables. Additionally, there was no association found between conformity in gender presentation and children’s self-perception or parent or child gender-typical attitudes. The results of this initial study may prove to be useful in ongoing research surrounding children’s gender typicality.

“GOD HATES FAGS”—THE USE OF RELIGION AS JUSTIFICATION FOR PREJUDICE TOWARDS HOMOSEXUALS

Fabros, Michelle S 01 December 2015 (has links)
The Westboro Baptist Church and Phelps family are notorious for their signs proclaiming anti-homosexuality epithets such as “God Hates Fag,” and references to Biblical verses to revile homosexuality (e.g., Romans 1:24-27). Although the homonegativity bias that Westboro patrons and many traditional Christians express is often understood as being rooted in religion, I proposed the possibility that religion can be a justification rather than source of homonegativity. That is, although religion typically is seen as the source of prejudice towards LGBT+ people, I argued that this relationship might work in reverse. I examined under which conditions this “reverse” phenomena might occur in both the Pilot Study and follow-up study. My Pilot Study results suggested that there are differences in participants’ level of Religiosity after falsely being told they held LGBT+ prejudices. These differences were moderated by political alignment. Relatively liberal participants were more likely to have higher levels of Religiosity after receiving Biased Feedback compared to those who received Neutral Feedback. In terms of those who were more politically conservative, their level of Religiosity tended to be about the same regardless of which feedback they received. When it came to Biblical Literalism, however, relatively conservative participants had higher levels of literalism when given the Neutral Feedback compared to relatively liberal participants when given the same Feedback. These findings were mostly replicated in the follow-up Main Study. The results from both studies suggest that, under some circumstances, people might use religion to justify their prejudice towards LGBT+, and the strategy they use is affected by their political alignment (liberal or conservative). There could be differences in motivations between people who are more politically conservative and those who are more politically liberal. These potential differences are addressed in the discussion.

SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS ATTITUDES TOWARDS LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER FOSTER YOUTH

Kolde, Katarina, Benitez, Daniel 01 June 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine and assess social work students’ attitudes towards working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) clients and identifying factors that would affect such attitudes. LGBT individuals face increased risk factors as opposed to their non-LGBT peers and are disproportionately over-represented in the foster care system. This study assessed California State University, San Bernardino Social Work student's attitudes towards working with LGBT clients through the use of self-administered questionnaires. The data acquired from such quantitative surveys was analyzed utilizing Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 23. Results yielded that sexual orientation, religion, religiosity and political view rate were factors that significantly affected attitudes towards LGBT clients. It was also found that Title IV-E participants did not differ significantly compared to non Title IV-E participants in attitudes towards LGBT clients. Implications for social work education and practice include increased training, experience, competence and humility building opportunities when working with LGBT clients.

Silver Sands

Riley, David 01 January 2019 (has links)
Silver Sands is a thirty-minute documentary film and accompanying installation that traces the story of Marc Hampton, a gay, desert-dwelling Vietnam vet, former Playgirl model, and vintage car collector who lost two lovers to AIDS. Drawing on videotaped interviews, shots of his house and environs, and extensive use of his personal photographic archive, this work addresses evolving ideas of memory and representation within the queer community. The film is divided into various chapters which function as meditations on masculinity, aging, loss, spirituality and intergenerational relationships. Marc becomes an archetypal figure––the survivor––whose meandering recollections illustrate some of the complexities of gay experience in the past fifty years, and the difficulty of historicizing them. By emphasizing overlooked stories and forgotten spaces, exploring the tension between visibility and invisibility, and summoning the ghosts of the AIDS era, Silver Sands proposes remembering as a form of resistance.

A Comparison of Sexual-Minority Stress in Lesbian and Gay Police Officers

Williams, Laura Ellen 01 January 2019 (has links)
The original purpose of this quantitative study was to compare 5 self-reported sexual minority stress (SMS) factors experienced by lesbian and gay police officers to discover if lesbian or gay police officers experience more SMS, and which factor, if any, is the biggest stressor for either group as measured using subscales of the Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire (DHEQ). This study partially incorporated minority-stress theory as applied to sexual minorities. This study used subscales from the DHEQ in anonymous, online surveys. Because of the low response rate, the study changed to compare the group of lesbian and gay police officers' self-reports on levels of feelings of vigilance, harassment/discrimination, isolation, vicarious trauma, and victimization as compared to the established population values. The central research question asked if there was a significant difference between lesbian and gay police officers and the established population on self-reported factors of SMS, as measured by the DHEQ. Two-tailed t tests were used to analyze the data. The results showed that lesbian and gay officers reported significantly less SMS as determined by the 5 factors on the DHEQ. The results of this study could provide an impact on how administrators treat lesbian and gay officers and how LGBT policies are created and implemented for internal and external (e.g. LGBT communities) interactions. The results of this study could also provide insight for police psychologists and other mental health practitioners about SMS.
