Out of many one people : telling the stories of Jamaican gay men and their move to CanadaBrown, Warren 21 May 2013 (has links)
In Jamaica, sexual acts between men are still punishable by law. Numerous incidents of violence against gay men and lesbians have prompted human rights groups to distinguish it as one of the most homophobic places on earth. There are many cases of gay Jamaican men seeking resettlement and refuge in Canada. While any transition to a new country and culture can be challenging for immigrants, there is limited research that speaks to the experiences of the gay Jamaican men. This paper is based on stories gathered from four gay Jamaican men who came to Canada as refugees and highlights issues of acculturation related to connection with Canadian culture, letting go of the home culture, challenges in support systems and the inability to feel comfortable, confident and settled in the new Canadian environment. The project resulted in a compilation of visual stories and audio clips that were placed on a website (http://queeryingjamaica.tumblr.com/). Using the tools available through social media, the stories provide a source of representation.

Mental Health, Identity and Coping Following Hate Crime VictimizationWootten, Sarah 29 November 2012 (has links)
Previous research has explored the impact on individuals following hate crime victimization, including prevalence estimates in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual (LGBT) community. Past research, however, has been limited in its scope when exploring the impact of the hate crime event on the overall mental health of the survivor often examining only one measure of functioning. The current project aims to fill this gap by analyzing measures of posttraumatic symptoms, depression, stress and dissociation, collected on a sample of 30 LGBT individuals who have experienced hate crime victimization. In addition to clinical features, this study also analysed identity, openness about LGBT identity and coping behaviours. Results indicated that social support, identity and coping impact recovery from hate crime victimization. The effect of these factors differed over time (within one month of the hate crime) and up to as much as five years later (within the month of the interview).

HBTQ-familjer i förskolan : En studie om förskolors skillnader i arbetet med att skapa en inkluderande miljö / LGBTQ families in preschool : A study of preschool differences in efforts to create an inclusive environmentAppelqvist, Nellie, Funesjö, Susanne January 2015 (has links)

Identity, Culture, and Articulation: A Critical-Cultural Analysis of Strategic LGBT Advocacy OutreachCiszek, Erica 29 September 2014 (has links)
This study examines how LGBT activists and LGBT youth make meaning of a strategic advocacy campaign. By examining activist and advocacy efforts aimed at youth, this research brings to light how LGBT organizations use campaigns to articulate identity and, conversely, how LGBT youth articulate notions of identity. Through the lens of the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit activist organization, this dissertation uses in-depth interviews with organizational members and chat-based interviews with LGBT youth to study the meanings participants brought to the campaign.
Strategic communication has been instrumental in construction of LGBT as a cohesive collective identity and has played a vital role in the early stages of the gay rights movement. This research demonstrates how contemporary LGBT advocacy, through strategic communication, works to shape understandings of LGBT youth.
Instead of focusing on the Internet as a democratic space that equalizes power differentials between an organization and its publics, this study shows that the construction of identity is the result of a dynamic process between producers and consumers in which power is localized and does not simply belong to an organization or its public.
This research challenges the Internet as a democratic space and demonstrates that identity is a discursive struggle over meaning that is bound up in the intimate dance between producers and consumers of a campaign. In contrast to functionalist understandings of public relations that privileges the organization, this dissertation contends that a cultural-economic approach focuses on the processes of communication. A cultural-economic approach gives voice to the diverse audiences of a communication campaign and addresses the role communication plays as a discursive force that influences the construction of identities.

The Paradoxical Interrelationship of Church and State in Post-Communist Russia: The Rise and Manifestation of Power via the Prism of LGBTQIA RightsZhdanov, Alekcander 27 October 2016 (has links)
The Russian Orthodox Church is seeking to reestablish a leadership role in the spiritual health of the citizenry in post-Communist Russia via a concerted effort to forge an alliance with the Russian government, regardless of the secular constitution. Commencing with perceived preferential legislation, the Church has risen to heightened influence that is subsequently being used to disenfranchise non-traditional sexual communities. This paper offers an extensive cross-examination of legislation and intersectionality that highlights the incongruities of this alliance via international, federal, and religious documents, legal case law, polling data and more to purport that the Church encompasses a higher degree of complexity than was previously assumed, including non-religious self-identification. Ultimately, this paper concludes that the Church, in its current form, functions more as an agency of the State than as a religious entity. Lastly, this paper neither defends nor anathematizes the merits of any theological tenet.

Thinking about the discussion of the importance of homosexual movements is an emerging question in the contemporary society. From individual experiences in the social living-together, the individuals are categorized as marginalized identities and, from this observation, are joint together as interested communities in discussing questions of common interest. Therefore, the intention of this dissertation is to contribute in the sense of extending this discussion within the academy, because especially in this space, there is an effervescence of ideas which in the 20th and 21st century favored the stimulation and the formation of the academic group LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender). Therefore, in this dissertation historical aspects are represented which explain the struggle of the LGBT community. By doing so, the group KIU – the university collective for sexual diversity of Salvador – is shown. The used methodology is “case study”, which intends to search for a deeper understanding of the upcoming and the militancy LGBT within the university from reports of activists of the KIU, in the perspective of historicizing the upcoming of the militancy in the UFBA – Federal University of Bahia – from this group. For the realization of the research, half – structured interviews were carried out, from which it was intended to get to know the political engagement in the student and academic movement LGBT in the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). The KIU is currently concentrating on the formation of new people who can give continuity to actions which today become vaster, including, beyond actions as to sexual diversity, actions which consider art, culture and citizenship, which are crucial topics for any movement which intends to cause a bit of social transformation that makes the world a more favorable place for the living together between the different people and as to respecting diversities.

________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This thesis aims to contribute in efforts to build an Anthropology of (Homo)sexuality in Cabo Verde, Africa. Focusing the (homo)socialiability, the gay movement and homoerotic experiences of men in the city of Mindelo, this ethnographic research in conjunction with the Creoles aims to question not only the homosexual life of the Creoles and its repercussions, but also pay attention to the emerging local LGBT movement. The perspectives and practices of the Creole men, gay and non-gay, contribute not only to understand their points of view, as to understand another cultural experience of drafting a universal phenomenon as homoeroticism. I argue that if the homoeroticism and the LGBT movement have their global dilemmas, they bump the specific semantics of this Atlantic archipelago, producing what I have called a "Hypocrisy System", permeated by silences and contradictions.
