Ness, Raissa 13 August 2013 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-07-03T16:34:31Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Raissa Ness.pdf: 1974819 bytes, checksum: 2d68eaf41955bc5cb99a0d825a6f673d (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-03T16:34:31Z (GMT).

Vega, Edmundo De la, Stanish, Charles 10 April 2018 (has links)
Centers of Pilgrimage as Mechanisms of Political Integration in Complex Societies in Titicaca´s AltiplanoPilgrimages to sacred places were a common practice in many prehispanic Andean societies. For example, the islands of the Sun and the Moon, located in southern Lake Titicaca, formed one of the most important pilgrimage routes imposed by the Inca state as part of its politics of state domain. Similarly, the mortuary centers of Cutimbo and Sillustani, belonging respectively to the Lupaqa and Colla chiefdoms, received annual pilgrimages as part of cult ceremonies dedicated to the ancestors.Using ethnohistorical documentation and archaeological information with regard to such pilgrimage centers, we discuss the hypothesis that the pilgrimages served as ideological mechanisms of social and political control on the part of complex societies.

Magic realism and Isabel Allende : an investigation of the relationship between narrative technique and gender politics

Goldman, Beverley 29 October 2015 (has links)
M.A. (English) / The main focus of study in this dissertation is the magic realism of Isabel Allende as it pertains to gender politics, specifically in the oppressive fascist regime of revolutionary Chile at the time at which her novels are set. Her narrative technique is identified and related to the environment of which she writes, with a view to associating it with the gender aspect of politics. The socio-political climate in Chile, certainly in the decades ot the 1960s and 1970s, incorporated elements of fascism, oppression and sexism: Allende successfully adapts most of her female characters to the revolution and its effects ...

El liberalismo republicano de Francisco Javier de Luna Pizarro

Lajo Lazo, Francisco Javier January 2017 (has links)

Lozano Chávez, Gonzalo André 11 November 2020 (has links)
In Peru, a significant number of constructions of great historical value have an earthen structure. These constructions are part of our cultural heritage and are an important source of income for the country due to its touristic value. For these reasons, it is important to preserve them and to ensure an adequate safety level against possible seismic activity through a correct assessment of their structural behavior. This research seeks to perform a preliminary analysis of the structural behavior of one of the most important heritage structures of the northern coast of Peru: la Huaca de la Luna. The study contemplates the implementation of numerical models in finite elements, both of the main pyramid and the underlying soil, the selection of appropriate materials and constitutive laws. The performance of a non-linear analysis under gravity loads and a Time-history linear analysis to determine the amplification effect of a seismic signal as it propagates through the soil strata. A parametric analysis will be performed to assess the influence of the changes in geometry caused by the damages that the structure has suffered, as well as the geotechnical conditions of the Huaca when considering the soil-structure interaction. The contribution of this work will be to determine the vulnerable zones due to the stresses caused by gravity loads, and to carry out a preliminary diagnosis of the state of damage, as well as to understand the seismic wave’s amplification phenomena in massive earthen structures. This will result in optimized intervention strategies in the future. The structural assessment of a historical construction like the one studied is a complex problem due to the little knowledge of the constructive processes of the time, as well as the variability of the mechanical properties of the materials and the deterioration suffered over the years. For this reason, previous experimental studies in the Huaca will be considered, among which are the mechanical characterizationof the materials, geotechnical and geophysical studies, and modal identification tests. The results of these studies will be complemented with numerical models in finite elements. It is expected that these models will help to identify the vulnerable zones in the case study, as well as to understand the current state of damage, and to predict the amplification of the acceleration experienced in the firm soil through the propagation of waves in the soil-structure system. Subsequently, the effect of considering changes in geometry due to damage and the soil-structure interaction when evaluating its seismic vulnerability will be quantified.

Imagining the Afro-Uruguayan Conventillo: Belonging and the Fetish of Place and Blackness

Sztainbok, V. 08 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the symbolic place occupied by a racialized neighbourhood within the Uruguayan national imaginary. I study the conventillos (tenement buildings) of two traditionally Afro-Uruguayan neighbourhoods in Montevideo, Barrio Sur and Palermo. These neighbourhoods are considered the cradle of Afro-Uruguayan culture and identity. The conventillos have been immortalized in paintings, souvenirs, songs, and books. Over the years most of the residents were evicted due to demolitions, which peaked during Uruguay’s military dictatorship (1973-1984). I address the paradox of how a community can be materially marginalized, yet symbolically celebrated, a process that is evident in other American nations (Brazil, Colombia, etc.). I show how race, class, and gender are entangled in folkloric depictions of the conventillo to constitute a limited notion of blackness that naturalizes the relationship between Afro-Uruguayans, music, sexuality, and domestic work. The folklorization of the space and it residents is shown to be a “fetishization” which enhances the whiteness of the national identity, while confining the parameters of black citizenship and belonging. Utilizing a methodology that draws on cultural geography, critical race, postcolonial, and feminist theory, my dissertation analyzes the various ways that the Barrio Sur/Palermo conventillo has been imagined, represented, and experienced. Specifically, I examine 1) autobiographical, literary and popular (media, songs) narratives about these neighbourhoods; 2) the depiction of the conventillo by a prominent artist (Carlos Páez Vilaró); 3) spatial practices; 4) the performance of a dancer who emerged from the conventillo to become a national icon (the Carnival vedette Rosa Luna); and 5) interviews with nine key informants. My analysis focuses on how bodies, subjects, and national belonging are constituted through relations to particular spaces. By foregrounding the “geographies of identity” (Radcliffe and Westwood, 1996, p. 27), I show that the symbolic celebration of black space goes hand in hand with material disavowal. This study thus connects the imagining of a local, racialized space to how national belonging is constituted and experienced.

Investigating the role of human cytomegalovirus protein LUNA in regulating viral gene expression during latency

Lau, Jonathan January 2018 (has links)
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a widespread human herpesvirus pathogen and prototypical member of the β-herpesvirus subfamily. Like all herpesviruses, the virus establishes a lifelong latent infection following host exposure, which has the potential to reactivate periodically and contribute to recurrent disease processes. In individuals with weak or compromised immune systems, such reactivation can lead to profound pathology. Understanding how latent infections are maintained is important for uncovering how HCMV causes disease. The study of viral genes that are expressed during latent infection grants insight into how latency is regulated and how it could be therapeutically targeted. To that end, this project has sought to evaluate the functional significance of one such viral gene termed LUNA in the context of latency. In models of experimental latent infection based on primary myeloid cells, levels of viral gene transcription were found to be significantly reduced following infection with LUNA deletion mutant viruses, consistent with corresponding observable changes in post-translational histone modifications over the viral promoters of latency-associated genes. Additionally, using luciferase reporter systems, latency-associated viral gene promoters became activated in response to the expression of wild-type LUNA. Together, these findings argue for a role of LUNA in regulating viral gene expression during latent HCMV infection. One possible mechanism by which LUNA may fulfil its role is by targeting cellular ND10 structures, known intrinsic inhibitors of herpesvirus gene expression, for disruption. In support of this, latently infected cells were found to be devoid of ND10, a phenotype that was recapitulated by the direct expression of wild-type LUNA. Furthermore, mutation studies confirmed the identification of a novel deSUMOylase activity encoded by LUNA that was responsible for mediating ND10 disruption. Use of a catalytically inactive LUNA mutant in transcriptional analyses of latent infection also generated similar results as with the LUNA deletion viruses. Overall, these data support the hypothesis that LUNA serves as an important regulator of viral gene expression during latency, which is likely linked to its ability to target ND10 structures for disruption, thus raising the possibility that inhibition of deSUMOylation may serve as a novel therapeutic strategy to target latent HCMV infection.
