Visualizing Dante’s World: Geography, History and Material Culture

DeWitt, Allison Marie January 2019 (has links)
This study examines the importance of geographical ideas in Dante’s Commedia and develops a historically sensitive geocritical methodology to analyze the function of real world geography within Dante’s poem. I aim to expand our understanding of the importance of the poet’s use of geography beyond the consulation of geographical sources and consideration of place names. In the first chapter case studies of geographical references with connections to the Islamic world show how historicized approaches open up new possibilities of understanding the medieval significance of the poet’s references. Subsequent chapters explore the relationship of the Commedia’s geography to medieval mapping technologies; comparing the parameters and borders of Dante’s world to the genre of medieval mappaemundi as well as putting this worldview into conversation with the emerging field of portolan charts and the developing navigational technology of the thirteenth century. This project further expands our definition of the stakes of geographical knowledge and traces the the social, political and cultural implications of the various modes of representing the world and how these implications are evident in the scholarly responses to the worldview represented within the Commedia. Ultimately, this project shows how a geocritical historicized reading of the Commedia opens up new directions for Dante studies and puts the geographical material of Dante’s work into conversation with other disciplines. The conclusion ends with a proposal for future digital directions for this research.

Moliere And Commedia Dell'arte:past, Present, And Future

Klass, Nicole 01 January 2006 (has links)
This thesis will explore the application of comemdia dell'arte technique to a contemporary performance. UCF's spring 2005 production of Molière's The Trickeries of Scapin will serve as a resource in both commedia dell'arte's ability to resonate with a modern audience as well as an analysis of the actor's process in fusing elements of commedia dell'arte and contemporary acting techniques. This document will include a thorough description of the history and origins of commedia dell'arte in order to decipher existing elements today. Also included, will be major influences on commedia dell'arte including Greek and Roman Comedy. It is important to discuss Roman comedic playwrights Plautus and Terence as two major influences on both the style of commedia dell'arte as well as major influences on Molière and his writing. A description of both playwrights previously mentioned will be given as means to explore the similarities between the two playwrights and Molière, specifically the similarities of Terence's Phormio and Molière's The Trickeries of Scapin. In addition to exploring the history behind commedia dell'arte and Molière, this thesis will include the rehearsal process of creating a contemporary version of Molière's Zerbinette. The application of the previous two years of graduate work including studies of Laban, Linklater, and Cicely Berry will be used in creating Zerbinette's vocal and physical life in a contemporary fashion, while maintaining certain elements of the commedia dell'arte style. In concluding this thesis, the evolution of commedia dell'arte will be discussed, and how it is in existence today. Just as commedia dell'arte evolved in the seventeenth century from previous art forms, it has never stopped evolving, constantly being influenced by every generation. From Greek Comedy playwrights' such as MeNander, to Roman comedic playwrights such as Plautus and Terence, to farcical and satirist Molière, commedia dell'arte does exist today, and will be examined throughout this thesis project.

The representation of italian stereotypes in Big deal on Madonna Street

Stucchi, Fernanda 13 November 2018 (has links)
In this dissertation, an analysis was made of how the stereotypes of the Italians are represented in the script of Big deal on Madonna Street, which was considered the inaugural film of the commedia all\'italiana. Therefore, it begins with an introduction about the commedia dellarte and the importance it had on the Italian comedy culture later on, mainly on the commedia all\'italiana. Next, the course of the Italian cinema is presented, starting from the comedies telefoni bianchi, passing through the neorealism and arriving at the commedia all\'italiana. The neorealist period of the Italian cinema began immediately at the post-war (1945), having its most important production period between 1945 and 1948. At the same time, it was developed the commedia all\'italiana which, with its own characteristics, gave continuity to neorealist themes. The abrupt changes that took place, in a relatively short time, between the end of the World War II (1945) and Italy\'s economic recovery (in the fifties and sixties), had repercussions in the behavioural change of the Italians, which resulted into a new model of identity. Thus, the commedia all\'italiana presents the portraits / stereotypes of the new Italian. In this work, ten characters of Big deal on Madonna Street were analysed, which, once placed against each other, reflect the social changes and the mindset of the Italians during this economic boom.

Handschriften von Dantes Divina commedia in Berlin und Dresden

Overgaauw, Eef 02 July 2020 (has links)

Le Triomphe de la Folie sur la scène de l’Académie Royale de Musique, portrait d’une figure entre 1697 et 1718 / The Triumph of Folly on the stage of the Académie Royale de Musique, portrait of an allegorical figure between 1697 and 1718

Tanguy, Camille 27 January 2014 (has links)
This work is devoted to the study of the allegorical figure of Folly on the stage of the Académie Royale de Musique between 1697 and 1718. Suggested or personified, this female character is abundantly present in the spectacles of this period. At the end of the reign of Louis XIV, Folly appears little by little at the Opera. Surrounded by Momus, Carnival, Bacchus, the god of love and the characters of the commedia dell'arte, Folly "brings back the soft Games", "banishes the cruel Reason" and continually invites to "taste the charms of life”. By accessing the Opera, this extravagant and playful figure indicates a change of tone that foreshadows the changing attitudes of the Regency. But beyond the hedonistic philosophy that she provides, what is the hidden meaning of Folly’s words? Should we see a calling into question of the established order, the social policy and the austerity marking the end of the reign? Does its use allow, under the cover of a “disease of the soul”, to criticize the policy and manners of Louis XIV? Who hides behind the subversive speech of Folly? What is the role of this figure in the aesthetic debates of the period? This research explores the role, as well as musical, dramatic and scenic treatments of such a figure through the study of works created at the Opera. We propose here a physical, moral and social portrait of Folly, in the light of multiple musical, textual and iconographic documents of the time, and present different character traits and several themes that are related to it in order to understand the reasons for its presence at this time

Dante’s Lucifer in the Commedia: music, pride, and the corruption of the divine

Unknown Date (has links)
The entity of Lucifer has long been an area of study and confusion throughout history. Among notable literary minds, Dante Alighieri stands out as an illuminating poet who brings to light the essence and nature of this nefarious character and his influence on mankind. In his revelatory work, the Commedia, Dante touches on but does not explicitly detail the scope and importance that music and specifically, song, has on the redemptive purgation of the soul. This work provides a more in depth investigation into the generally overlooked issue, that is, the origin and initial intent of song, the perversion of which, by whom and why, and Dante’s perception of the subject revealed in his missive to mankind. Along scientific theory, along with other works by Dante to provide a link between Lucifer, music, the sin of pride, and the corruption of the divine. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
