It was based on the investigation of its character's types in order to explore and expand 14 teachers' physical expression as a way to enable them to better introduce small children to theatre work. To carry out this investigation I have engaged these teachers in a workshop based on a process of appropriating and re-signifying the character's types by looking at their body language. The aim was to enlarge and extend the teachers' expressive physical repertory, in order open up alternatives for day-to-day classroom theatre work. The outcome of this workshop was a performance presented at 08 primary schools. A theoretical investigation of the role of the teacher for enlarging children's cultural capital backed this practice / Este estudo baseia-se na possível contribuição da Commedia dell‟arte para a formação de professores. A partir da investigação dos personagens tipos da Commedia, busquei explorar e expandir o repertório corporal e expressivo de 14 professoras da rede de Educação Infantil do município de Florianópolis, capacitando-as a introdução do trabalho teatral com crianças. Para realizar essa investigação, desenvolvi com essas professoras uma oficina que consistia em um processo de apropriação e ressignificação de elementos da Commedia dell‟arte. O resultado dessa oficina foi a criação de um espetáculo apresentado em 08 unidades da Educação Infantil desse município. La poétique dissonante de La divine comédie : Dante plagiaire de Baudelaire?

Dans L'écriture et l'expérience des limites, Philippe Sollers affirme que Dante représente à la fois le symbole de la reprise de l'antiquité et celui de l'annonce des temps modernes. Outre Sollers, d'autres interprétations historiques comme celle de Jacqueline Risset dans Dante écrivain ont montré que La divine comédie présentait de nombreux avatars quant à ses sources antiques, sa position dans le temps et son influence sur la littérature qui lui succède. Ce mémoire a pour but d'approfondir cette hypothèse en étudiant la nature, le sens et les enjeux de la relation problématique entre Dante et le temps, car elle anticipe selon moi la conception baudelairienne de la modernité, où il s'agit de « tirer l'éternel du transitoire ». Avec La divine comédie, Dante aurait, cinq siècles avant son invention, compris le sens baudelairien du terme « modernité » en exprimant, à la manière de l'auteur des Fleurs du Mal, la beauté qui émane de l'horreur, le sublime camouflé dans « la flore délaissée du Mal et de la Mort » (Claude Roy). Évidemment, il ne s'agit pas de faire le procès de Dante en prouvant qu'il a plagié le « kiosque bizarre » de Baudelaire, mais plutôt, de se soustraire aux obstacles factuels de la linéarité temporelle, le temps d'étudier la Comédie à partir d'une perspective plus moderne. Dans ce mémoire, il s'agit conséquemment de repenser l'œuvre poétique de Dante et son rapport au temps à partir de l'idée de « plagiat par anticipation » élaborée par Pierre Bayard, avec laquelle il est possible d'envisager la littérature comme un réseau qui ne fonctionnerait pas à partir d'une logique causale ou linéaire, mais qui serait plutôt constitué d'un enchevêtrement omnidirectionnel de liens. Du coup, il est possible de penser que Dante a plagié Baudelaire. Et la clé de ce délit se trouve dans le désir qu'a Baudelaire de faire renaître « l'âge d'or » de la poésie dans ses Fleurs du Mal, car pour y arriver, il effectue un saut dans le passé afin de pouvoir s'inspirer des grands poètes de l'antiquité. Mais en agissant de la sorte, Baudelaire s'expose au plagiat par anticipation. Pour écrire la Comédie, Dante retourne vers ce même passé idéalisé et à partir de cette « rencontre » entre les deux poètes, Dante est en mesure d'anticiper les motifs constitutifs de la modernité baudelairienne. Bref, si le plagiat de Dante sur Baudelaire est possible, c'est parce que les deux poètes ont visité les mêmes sources pour créer leurs œuvres respectives. El propósito de esta investigación La dramaturgia escénica aplicada desde el método de improvisación de Antonio Fava, basado en la Commedia dell’Arte consiste en la revaloración del hecho interpretativo de la técnica de la improvisación en la Commedia dell’Arte recuperada desde la pedagogía de Antonio Fava, quien maneja un sistema de composición detallada que favorece a la construcción del hecho teatral. De esta manera, se busca demostrar las diferentes técnicas, métodos y recursos que la improvisación ofrece. Además, se propone a la improvisación como fuente principal del proceso creativo y como método dentro de los recursos metodológicos que el actor contemporáneo necesita para fines de estudio, creación, construcción de personaje, composición de la poética y estética interpretativa y la composición de una dramaturgia escénica inimitable. A su vez, expongo los contenidos históricos de los que parto para situar a la improvisación como recurso escénico dentro de nuestro legado teatral, realizando una línea de tiempo de su evolución partiendo desde la aparición en el teatro antiguo y próximo auge y popularidad en el teatro del renacimiento italiano en la Commedia dell’Arte hasta su utilidad para la investigación del sistema de Stanislavski y, finalmente, su reinvención y transgresión de la técnica dentro de la impro y match impro con Viola Spolin y Keith Johnston. Todo ello ha permitido no solo describir la situación de la improvisación dentro de nuestro oficio en la actualidad, sino también conocer su recuperación desde la pedagogía de Antonio Fava, como una técnica comprendida dentro de la naturaleza del actor, la cual solo necesita ser ejecutada y liberada dentro del proceso creativo y así permitir que se ahonde para fines de elaborar presentaciones equipadas con propuestas innovadoras y singulares.

I manoscritti qui considerati vanno dal Seicento al primo Ottocento, e documentano una fase della letteratura italiana che continuava a interessare lettori e collezionisti. Un caso esemplare è il manoscritto Ob.37, raccolta calligrafica, che contiene soprattutto sonetti, canzoni e poesie musicali senza indicarne il nome dell’autore. La prima menzione di questo supporto è nel catalogo Scheureck del 1755, ma non sappiamo altro sulla sua acquisi-zione. Il lavoro erudito consiste nell’identificare gli autori delle poesie, e rintracciare i testi anche in codici simili della stessa epoca. Interessante pure un gruppo di manoscritti che portano le segnature Mscr.Dresd.Ob.48.b, Ob.48.c, Ob.48.d, Ob.48.e, Ob.48.f, Ob.48.g, Ob.48.ga e Ob.48.h, prevalentemente libretti di opere liriche, con l’eccezione del Falcone, commedia la cui esecuzione va collocata a Vienna intorno al 1740. Di qualche interesse ne è la lingua, aperta sia a modi proverbiali, letterari o popolari, sia a sezioni in dialetto veneto e lombardo, che si possono paragonare a quelle della commedia dell’arte fino ai primi successi di Carlo Goldoni.

Adapting The End: Responding to Standards of Learning in Theatre for Children

Theatre is the passport to the creation of a balanced educational system in the United States (US), while standardized testing is the downfall of the ideology behind ‘No Child Left Behind’ (NCLB). As an educator, I was greatly influenced by Howard Gardner, theorist of Multiple Intelligences and Neil Fleming theorist of learning modalities. This work has carried over into my work in theatre as a director. Theatre does not have to didactically serve formal education, which emphasizes mathematics and reading/writing, nor does it have to be merely a spectacle. Theatre can be experimental, artistic, cathartic, foster social and intrapersonal skills and increase intelligences in all areas for children and adults. The adaptation of the children’s book The End by David LaRochelle into a play for children demonstrates the potential that lies within the art of theatre to be more than just entertainment. Furthermore, my work on the adaptation of The End was greatly influenced by my research and participation in the production of Pinocchio with Ohio Valley Summer Theatre in the fall of 2008. From this production, I gained considerable knowledge on the topic of Commedia Del’ Arte which impacted my work on my own production The End.

A la recherche d'un théâtre perdu : Giovanni Poli (1917-1979) et la néo-Commedia dell'Arte en Italie, entre tradition et expérimentation

L’Europe du XXe siècle voit la création de compagnies et centres de recherche qui se consacrent à la redécouverte des modules de la Commedia dell’Arte, véritable forme de théâtre traditionnel en Occident qui a décliné après la ‘réforme’ de Goldoni. Giovanni Poli représente l'exemple le plus significatif de ce processus de réinvention que nous appelons, avec un néologisme, néo-Commedia dell'Arte. Ayant eu accès à ses archives privées et après les avoir retranscrites et proposées en annexe, nous avons pu entrer dans tous les méandres de son activité polymorphe et voir comment elles répondaient à nos questionnements. La présente thèse est structurée en trois parties allant de la pensée à la pratique et vice-versa. La première interroge la formation de la pensée de Poli autour de la Commedia dell'Arte afin de comprendre quelle était la démarche qui l'a conduit à concevoir son spectacle le plus célèbre La Commedia degli Zanni (1958). La deuxième est dédiée à sa pratique artistique, corrélée à la fois à la dramaturgie et aux mises en scène inspirées du phénomène historique, attachant une importance particulière à la technique du montage anthologique, l'une des caractéristiques principales de son écriture ‘postdramatique’. La dernière partie analyse les processus de transmission de cette réinvention, qui advient à travers son activité pédagogique et les ‘voyages’ au sens propre et au sens figuré entrepris avec sa néo-Commedia dell'Arte. Puisant à la fois dans la tradition théâtrale italienne et dans l’avant-garde, il réinvente un système référentiel, se révélant une cheville indispensable à la reconstruction du panorama européen et mondial de la néo-Commedia dell'Arte. / Europe of the XXth century sees the creation of companies and research centers which dedicate themselves to the rediscovery of the modules of Commedia dell'Arte, the real shape of western traditional theater, which declined after the 'reform' of Goldoni. Giovanni Poli represents the most significant example of this process of reinvention that we call, with a neologism, néo-Commedia dell'Arte. Having had access to his private archives and having transcribed and proposed them in appendix, we were able to enter all the meanders of his polymorphic activity and to see how they answered our questionings.This thesis is structured in three parts, moving from the thought to the practice and vice versa. The first one, questions the formation of Poli’s thought around Commedia dell'Arte to understand what was the approach which led him to conceive his most famous play La Commedia degli Zanni (1958). The second part is dedicated to his artistic practice correlated, at the same time, with dramatic art and with directions inspired by the historical phenomenon, setting a particular importance to the technique of anthological editing, one of the main features of his 'postdramatic' writing. The last part analyzes the processes of transmission of this reinvention, which happens through his educational activity and the 'journeys' literally and figuratively undertaken with his néo-Commedia dell'Arte. Drawing at the same time on Italian theatrical tradition and on the avant-garde, he reinvents a reference system, showing itself an essential core to the reconstruction of European and world panorama of néo-Commedia dell'Arte.

Italian Readers of Ovid: From the Origins to Dante

"Italian Readers of Ovid: From the Origins to Dante" studies the reception of Ovid's writings in medieval Italian prose and poetry, from the first vernacular poems composed in Sicily to Dante's "Divina Commedia." Starting from the very beginnings of a new literary culture, I show how the increasing availability of Ovid's texts is mirrored in the increasing textual presence of Ovid in the vernacular writings of the period. Identifying the general traits common to this Ovid-inspired literature, I discuss how medieval Italian authors used Ovid's works and his characters to address questions of poetics, openly debating the value of Ovid's poetry for their own writings. I then illustrate how, in his lyric poetry and the "Commedia," Dante inserts himself into this vernacular practice of discussing poetics through the medium of Ovid. Ultimately, I argue that Dante's reading of Ovid in the "Commedia" is deeply rooted in his own lyric poetry and that of his predecessors. Chapter 1, "Medieval Italian Readers of Ovid, Modern Readers of Reception," describes the material and cultural contexts of the reception of Ovid during the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries in Italy, challenging existing notions about Ovid's reception in medieval Italian scholarship. Previous studies mostly treat Dante's "Commedia" as the starting point of this reception history, neglecting the preceding and equally important lyric tradition. Questioning this approach, I reconstruct the increasing availability of Ovid's works in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in Italy and specify in which formats (commentaries, translations, anthologies, mentions in treatises, other works of literature) and contexts (schools, universities, courts, monasteries) contemporary readers could have encountered Ovid's works. By outlining these texts and contexts, I depict a growing community of Italian readers of Ovid, many of whom not only read Ovid but also incorporated the Latin poet's work in their writings. Chapter 2, "Readers Turned Writers: From the Sicilian School to the dolce stil novo," focuses on a first series of these Ovid-inspired Italian writings. This chapter explores the poetic implications of including Ovid in their works--a trait found in the poetry of Pier della Vigna, Guido Cavalcanti, and Guido Guinizzelli, among others. During this period, poets debate with their contemporaries about how to write poetry, openly addressing and even attacking fellow poets while defending their own poetics. The Italian poets explicitly evaluate their readings of Ovid's love poetry in their poems and single out his poetry as an emblem of the kind of poetry they write, or no longer wish to write. The vernacular poets treat Ovid's "Metamorphoses" similarly. By means of the simile, the Italian poets feature a select group of Ovidian characters to underline their own exceptionality: for example, the poet is similar to the male Ovidian character (but better), his lady to the female (but more beautiful). The third chapter, "Readers Turned Writers: Dante Alighieri and Cino da Pistoia," focuses on the exceptional position of Dante and Cino among this group of vernacular writers. Both Dante and Cino integrate Ovidian material in their poetry with more complexity. Including similes in their poetry, Dante and Cino radically revise this common practice by associating themselves with the female Ovidian character--a gender switch that later Petrarch will adopt. Both poets also go beyond comparing their world with that of the "Metamorphoses" (what all the vernacular poets discussed in Chapter 2 did), but truly integrate Ovidian material into their poetry, blending Ovid's world into theirs. Furthermore, this chapter challenges the notion of two phases of Dante's writing posed in Dante scholarship: one phase when he is exclusively interested in vernacular poetry, and the second phase when he turns to classical literature. Finding Ovid featured in one of Dante's earliest poem exchanges, I illustrate that it is precisely in his vernacular lyric poetry that Dante slowly starts to experiment with Ovidian material. The petrose, a series of four poems written around 1296, are central in this development. These poems test out some new techniques that Dante will use more frequently in the "Commedia": the integration of both central and peripheral elements from a larger passage in Ovid's text, and the combination of different Ovidian sources at the same time. Chapters 4 and 5 trace the development of these techniques from Dante's lyric poems to the "Commedia," where for the first time we encounter Ovidian material in a Christian context. While it is not my aim to de-allegorize Dante's reading of Ovid, I stress that the most radically allegorizing and Christianizing commentaries on Ovid are not part of the cultural context of Dante's time and, instead, illustrate how much Dante's reading of Ovid is rooted in the lyric tradition. Chapter 4, "Metapoetics in Ovid and Dante's Commedia," focuses on the role Ovid's writings play in Dante's definition of his poetics. Looking at metanarrative moments in the "Commedia" (Inf. 24-25, Purg. 24, the poetic invocations in Purg. 1 and Par. 1), I illustrate how Dante repeatedly discusses poetics through the medium of Ovid, just as the Italian lyric poets did. Chapter 5, "Shifting Shapes of Ovidian Intertextuality: Ovid's Influence in Purgatorio and Paradiso," proposes to categorize Ovidian allusions in the "Commedia" by the kinds of elements Dante drew from his Ovidian sources. The primary method with which Dante incorporates Ovidian material in the "Commedia" is the rhetorical trope of the simile, which was also repeatedly used by the vernacular lyric poets. Focusing on the Purgatorio and Paradiso, the two canticles where the poet compares himself most often with certain characters from the "Metamorphoses," I illustrate how Dante adopts and transforms this vernacular lyric practice. Of these vernacular poets, Dante is certainly the Italian reader of Ovid who integrates Ovidian material in his poetry most frequently and with the most complexity: he combines the methods of the vernacular lyric poets with other classical or theological sources and conforms these methods to the poetics of the "Commedia." But this complexity, I ultimately argue, can only be fully understood in connection within the cultural context of the reception of Ovid: an Italian literary culture that from its very beginnings reflects on Ovid's texts.
