Bryan Johanson's 13 Ways of Looking at 12 Strings for Two Guitars: Recording and Critical Investigation

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this project is to introduce Bryan Johanson's composition for two guitars, 13 Ways of Looking at 12 Strings, and present an authoritative recording appropriate for publishing. This fifty-minute piece represents a fascinating suite in thirteen movements. The author of this project performed both guitar parts, recorded them separately in a music studio, then mixed them together into one recording. This document focuses on the critical investigation and description of the piece with a brief theoretical analysis, a discussion of performance difficulties, and guitar preparation. The composer approved the use and the scope of this project. Bryan Johanson is one of the leading contemporary composers for the guitar today. 13 Ways of Looking at 12 Strings is a unique guitar dictionary that takes us from Bach to Hendrix and highlights the unique capabilities of the instrument. It utilizes encoded messages, glass slides, metal mutes, explosive "riffs," rhythmic propulsion, improvisation, percussion, fugual writing, and much more. It has a great potential to make the classical guitar attractive to wider audiences, not limited only to guitarists and musicians. The main resources employed in researching this document are existing recordings of Johanson's other compositions and documentation of his personal views and ideas. This written document uses the composer's prolific and eclectic compositional output in order to draw conclusions and trace motifs. This project is a significant and original contribution in expanding the guitar's repertoire, and it uniquely contributes to bringing forth a significant piece of music. / Dissertation/Thesis / Recording of movement 1: Toccataesque mp3 / Recording of movement 2: Bad Egg Cafe mp3 / Recording of movement 6: Strings Etouffee mp3 / Recording of movement 7: Steel Pans mp3 / Recording of movement 8: Slide Rule mp3 / Recording of movement 10: EGAD! mp3 / Recording of movement 13: Jammus Vulgaris mp3 / D.M.A. Music 2011

The Opus 41 Vocalises of Nikolai Medtner: Background, Analysis, and Performer's Guide

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: The concert vocalise, a dazzling wordless vocal etude intended for performance, is largely a phenomenon of the twentieth century. Made famous by composers such as Sergei Rachmaninoff and Maurice Ravel, the concert vocalise is generally a short, non-programmatic work with a relatively simple form. In contrast, Nikolai Medtner’s two monumental Op. 41 vocalises, the Sonata-Vocalise mit einem Motto “Geweihter Platz and the Suite Vocalise, are staggering in their length and formal complexity. They are also programmatically conceived, sharing the Goethe poem “Geweihter Platz” as their inspiration. The innovation of adding a textual element to a traditionally textless genre introduces a tantalizing new layer of complexity that demands further research and exploration. However, as with any innovation, it also offers new challenges to performers wishing to program either or both works. Current scholarship has yet to offer any kind of in-depth analysis of either work, leaving questions as to the structural and motivic elements which bind these large works together, not to mention questions related to exactly how Medtner addresses the challenge of linking specific parts of Goethe’s text to the textless portions of music. Furthermore, neither work is considered standard repertoire, and recordings and performances are limited, leaving aspiring performers in something of an informational desert. In this paper, I endeavor to fill this informational gap for performers and scholars alike by providing them with a brief biography of Medtner, an outline of the development of the concert vocalise genre, and the background of the Goethe poem that inspired Medtner. Then my in-depth analyses reveal underlying structural, motivic, and programmatic links both within and between the works. Finally, my performer’s guide, based on the analyses and my experience performing both works, offers suggestions regarding the interpretational, ensemble, and technical challenges presented by these great works. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2017

O ressurgimento da suíte para teclado na segunda metade do século XIX e início do século XX / O ressurgimento da suíte para teclado na segunda metade do século XIX e início do século XX

Adriano Figueiredo Heidrich 04 December 2009 (has links)
With the development of this work is intended to demonstrate the resurgence of the suite in mid-nineteenth century and subsequent implementation at the beginning of the twentieth century, from the suite for harpsichord of the eighteenth century. Tried to verify the formal and stylistic influence of gender in baroque schools later, and the role of the suite revisited, as reference pieces in the pianist repertoire. Historical background and socio-cultural fashion and style in question, as well as the importance in this kind for the Romantic repertoire and their influences in schools later. Formal and stylistic comparison between the Baroque suite and the suite of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, and also illustrative analysis with works of the genre. The suite of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century played a key role in the disruption, by the nationalist composers, with the paradigms in German music.

A Petrological investigation of the Rustenburg layered suite and associated mineralization South of Potgietersrus

Hulbert, Larry John January 1983 (has links)
A sequence of 3250 m of the Rustenburg Layered Suite and its associated mineralization south of Potgietersrus was investigated. Four episodes of faulting have deformed the area. This resulted in very early differentiates, not seen elsewhere in the Bushveld Complex, to outcrop together with economic concentrations of the best metallurgical grade chromite presently being mined in the Republic. The Mg:Fe:Ca ratio of theCa-poor pyroxenes varies from 89,5:8,8:1,6 in the lower zone to 44,2:52,3:3,37 in the upper zone. The latter composition demarcates the Fe-rich end of the two pyroxene limit. Textural evidence implies that there is a peritectic reaction between the ironrich Ca-poor pyroxene and the melt and that this may account for the termination of the two pyroxene field. A significantly higher mean Ko~~~F~p; for the study area (0,822) than for the other sectors of the Bushveld Complex (0,782) suggests that the pyroxenes of similar composition crystallized at higher temperatures in the Potgietersrus limb. Examination of the Al :Si ratio in Ca-rich pyroxenes from a variety of magmatic environments confirms that this variable can be used to monitor relative changes in the a ~~~t. Chemical data of the Ca-rich pyroxenes suggest that this phase define~ an Fe enrichment - Ca depletion trend during differentiation uhlike that for most other tholeiitic intrusions. The V205 content of the main magnetitite layer and the cr203 and the Cr/Fe2++Fe3+ values in the upper and lower chromitite layers in the study area are the highest encountered in the Bushveld Complex. Textural evidence in these layers show that they have been up-graded to dense monomineralic layers by postcumulus sintering. Calculated intensive parameters for the Potgietersrus magma suggest that it crystallized over a temperature interval from 1276°C in the lower zone to 1022°C in the basal portion of the upper zone. Oxygen fugacity conditions for the lower zone ranged from 10-6,21 to 10-4,98 atm whereas lower values of 1o-11 to 1o-9 atm were operative in the upper zone. The study area contains abundant concentrations of sulfides at several levels in the sequence. The separation of the sulfide liquid is related in most cases to new influxes of metal-rich magma and mixing with the residual magma in the chamber. Several definite sulfide facies occur in the layered sequence. Sulfur isotope investigations indicate that all the sulfur in the study area is mantle derived and that the isotopic composition of the sulfur was controlled by the prevailing fo2, which in turn controlled the partitioning of S02 and HzS between sulfide melt and magma. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 1983. / gm2014 / Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering / Unrestricted

Energy Performance Simulations of a Scania Truck Cabin

Axenholm Strömberg, Niklas, Verde, Leo January 2020 (has links)
The vast majority of trucks in the European Union are reliant on fossil fuels as their primary mode of propulsion. In efforts to decarbonise the truck transport sector manufacturers are developing electrified trucks. An electrification may serve to reduce the tailpipe emissions of trucks, but it introduces a new challenge to supply the cabin with energy. This energy is primarily used to maintain a comfortable cabin climate for the driver and passenger. In order to maximise the range of an electric truck the cabin energy requirement needs to be minimised. This thesis evaluates the current energy performance of a Scania S20H cabin through experimental testing as well as simulations using the simulation software GT-SUITE. Based on the results from the tests and the models, energy saving concepts were generated and their performance was evaluated. The experimental tests were performed on a truck in a climate chamber where the ambient temperatures, HVAC system fan speeds, air recirculation rate and inlet air temperatures were varied. The test data was used to build a one-dimensional simulation model in GT-ISE as well as a three-dimensional model in GT-TAITherm. The one-dimensional model was calibrated against 10 experimental tests and yielded an average relative error for the chosen temperature calibration parameters between 0.05% and 0.43%. The one-dimensional model showed that the largest energy loss was through air evacuation and air leakage, accounting for 70-90% of the input energy. The structural energy losses were primarily through the windshield and the side windows, accounting for 32% and 23% of the total structural losses respectively. Energy saving concepts in the form of low emissivity window glazing, double pane windows, xenon filled gas panel insulation and low levels of air recirculation were simulated. The best and most plausible combination of the aforementioned concepts yielded an average input energy decrease of 31.6%, air loss decrease of 32.9% and a structural loss decrease of 27.6% compared to the simulated base cases. The three-dimensional model was calibrated against one test case and yielded an average relative error of 0.15% for the chosen temperature calibration parameter. One energy saving concept in the form of double pane side windows in conjunction with low emissivity glazing on all windows was simulated. This concept had a slight impact in raising the average cabin air temperature and the interior surface temperatures of the windows. The surface temperature change resulted in a decrease of cold downdraught from the top roof window and the driver side window. In conclusion, the models work as intended providing a time efficient way of evaluating the energy performance of structural changes. In order to improve the performance, usefulness and accuracy of the models the initial values should be more exact. This can be achieved by standardised testing procedures as well as data collection with wind speed.
