Second-generation immigrants and labor market integration in Sweden : The matter of local context for explaining occupation status differences between ethnic groups

Westin, Margareta January 2017 (has links)
The focus of this paper is second-generation immigrants and their labor market performance. With increased immigration from a more diverse ethnic background during the latest decades, it has become apparent that there is a difference between immigrant ethnic groups in labor market performance, in which some groups are more disadvantaged. Now more of these children have grown up, and research shows that the difficulties their parents had, affects the second generation. It is therefore of interest to understand what causes problems and generates opportunities for the second generation and try to understand the division between groups. One theory regarding the integration over generations and the differences between groups is segmented assimilation theory, proposed by Portes and Zhous (1993). According to this theory, both individual characteristics, and the context of immigrant lives are important. Starting with this theory, this paper looks deeper into individual characteristics and context, with special attention towards the implication of the context and the labor market. The thesis does this by testing if “local context,” a concept by Ellis & Almgren (2009) branched to understand the local geographical dimension at a smaller scale than national matter, in the shape of regions. The focus toward context and labor market is due to a small degree of research that attempts to explain how well the second-generation succeeds, depending on the labor market. The method for this is quantitative and builds on comparisons between regressions. A measurement called International Socioeconomic Index (ISEI) is used to explain the impact of the differences between ethnic groups. First are ordinary least square regressions with only ethnic groups, individual characteristics and no spatial aspect compared to a multilevel model based on labor market regions. Further are the spatial characteristics (whether a region is a big city or not), and the degree to which a region is knowledge-based. These factors are added in a multilevel regression to see if these spatial aspects can explain what it is about the regions that have an impact. The result shows a difference between both ethnic groups and regions, and that regions do explain some of the difference between the ethnic groups. The data also show that some non-European groups have higher status occupation than previous research has indicated. Other factors affecting immigrant groups are whether they live in a big city region or not, and how knowledge-based a region is, there it is an advantage living in regions with these factors. However, there is still an unexplained difference between ethnic groups, due to unknown factors. The result are also influenced of sample selection, it is therefore important to be aware that this result only show people with occupation and not labor market performance overall, as unemployment is not taken into account.

Bridging Borders: A Comparative Study of Policy Measures and Initiatives Promoting Labor Market Integration of Immigrant Women in Sweden and Canada 2015-2023

Ottosson, Felicia January 2024 (has links)
This study provides a comparative analysis of labor market integration policies for immigrant women in Sweden and Canada from 2015 to 2023, using Carol Bacchi's framework of "what is the problem represented to be” (WPR). It explores how Canadian and Swedish policies construct the “problem” for female immigrants' labor market integration by examining underlying assumptions, values, and discourses within these policies. The study uses a postcolonial feminist and intersectional lens to critically assess how gender, immigration, and labor market dynamics intersect with policy frameworks. Analyzing the representations and effects of these policies, this study highlights the differences and similarities between the approaches of the two countries. It also considers the wider sociopolitical context that influences policy development and implementation. The study reveals that Canadian and Swedish policies identify a combination of structural and individual shortcomings as the "problems" for immigrant women integrating into the labor markets of these countries. The comparative analysis between the nations reveals that while both countries identify similar "problems," their strategic actions and targeted interventions differ. Canada has a more comprehensive approach to labor market integration and focuses more on efforts to restructure harmful structures. In contrast, Swedish initiatives focus more on individual adaption over systemic change by implementing targeted initiatives for immigrant women's adaptation to existing labor market structures. The findings of this study contributeto migration and labor studies by revealing the complex layers of policy and its impact on the labor market opportunities of immigrant women.

The work of Government and non-Government organizations in refugee integration in the German labor market, Sep. 2015-Jan. 2016. Stejné, ale jiné? Srovnání integrační zkušenosti uprchlíků a gastarbeiterů v Německu / Same, but different? A comparison of the integration experiences of refugees and guest worker migrants in Germany

Gundacker, Lidwina January 2018 (has links)
Same, but different? A comparison of the integration experiences of refugees and guest worker migrants in Germany Abstract The increasing number of asylum seekers arriving in Germany over the past years have not only sparked an emotional public debate on immigration and societal membership, but have also proven to be a major challenge for policy-makers. Although the volume of refugee migration is indeed unprecedented in Germany, the country has had significant experience with receiving and integrating newcomers in its recent past: the post-war economic boom has led to the recruitment of millions of foreign workers, so- called Gastarbeiter. A non-negligible share ultimately settled permanently, but their integration process was not without its challenges. This paper argues that Germany's guest worker experience offers valuable insight into current integration processes in the German context. To make this existing knowledge accessible, this work uses a historical approach to identify the main elements that have shaped the integration experiences of guest workers in Germany, tied in with an econometric examination assessing the main factors in turn associated with the economic integration of the current refugee cohort. Comparison of the results suggest that a range of obstacles faced by guest workers and their...
