SOUTHERN FRINGES: LITTLE MAGAZINES AND LARRY BROWN’S EARLY SHORT FICTION

Unknown Date (has links)
“Southern Fringes: Little Magazines and Larry Brown’s Early Short Fiction” seeks to revitalize and expand the scholarly field of the New Southern Studies, employing textuality, book history, and postcritique perspectives towards the study of literary events and objects. Whereas the New Southern Studies rightly problematizes and dismantles notions of the signifier southern named in connection with literary works, such approaches often ignore paratextual elements, including material and sociological features, that work to frame and support these narratives. This dissertation addresses such shortcomings, arguing that paratextual formations function as vital spaces for constructing senses of southernness in service of both bibliographic identity and readers’ literary discernments. Exploring public epitext in a variety of locations, as well as four cases of Larry Brown’s short stories appearing in Mississippi Review, The Greensboro Review, and The Chattahoochee Review, this dissertation demonstrates how Brown’s writing emerges as southern fringe: a joint presence of autobiographic, material, perceptual, and other paratextual elements that frame Brown’s writing in unique locales outside of the literary mainstream. This dissertation's implications include adopting a mode of reading and analysis, focusing on case studies and surface readings of paratext serving specific bibliographic documents, as a way to move beyond generalizing and broad claims about the nature, function, and interpretation of literature. Additionally, this dissertation focuses on little magazines, materiality, and paratext as expanded sites and perspectives for the continued growth and development of interdisciplinary humanities fields such as the New Southern Studies. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Demokratisering i Nordafrika : En jämförande demokratiseringsstudie av Egypten och Tunisien / Democratization in Northern Africa : A comparative democratization study of Egypt and Tunisia

Gorginpaveh, Arvin January 2019 (has links)
The objective of this essay is to present both the reason behind the Egyptian democratization failure, as well as the cause of the success of the Tunisian democracy. The methodology of this essay is composed of a comparative democratization study, which includes a most similar systems-design method. The studies will try to pinpoint the key components of the result of the democratization, by using four of Larry Diamond’s nine internal and external democratization factors, which are presented in his book: ‘The Spirit of Democracy’. The results of this study indicate that Egypt had a far larger and more influential military force and also a critical economy, despite less international support for their democratization. Tunisia has a more democratic-oriented civil society and through democratic assistance from the European Union, a peaceful transition into a democratic system was possible. In this essay, a far deeper analysis of the democratization process will be highlighted, including how to prove how these essential factors caused the different outcomes of the Arabic spring protests.

O papel dos valores cognitivos e não-cognitivos na atividade científica: o modelo reticulado de Larry Laudan e as estratégias de Hugh Lacey / The role of cognitive and non-cognitive values in scientific practices: the reticulated model by Larry Laudan and the research strategies by Hugh Lacey

Koide, Kelly Ichitani 10 June 2011 (has links)
The present investigation examines the role of cognitive and non-cognitive values in scientific practices. This analysis is based on a comparison between the models proposed by Hugh Lacey and Larry Laudan to explain the dynamics of scientific activity. We will see that in Laceys model, whose main idea are the strategies of investigation, both kinds of values have legitimate roles in scientific activity. In the reticulated model, proposed by Laudan, the author admits only cognitive values as constitutive of scientific rationality. Based on a comparison between both models, we will try to show that Laceys model seems broader than the reticulated model, in the sense that the reticulated one could be considered as a part of Laceys model.

The poetics of Libretti: reading the opera works of Gwen Harwood and Larry Sitsky.

Wood, Alison J.E. January 2008 (has links)
Gwen Harwood is one of Australia’s most celebrated poets. Her longstanding collaboration with composer Larry Sitsky produced six substantial operas between 1963 and 1982; Fall of the House of Usher (1965); Lenz (1970); Fiery Tales (1975, based on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and excerpts from Boccaccio’s Decameron); Voices in Limbo (1977); The Golem (1980, first performed in 1993); and De Profundis (1982, a setting of Oscar Wilde’s letters). Both Harwood and her critics acknowledge the libretti as some of her best writing (Harwood cites her libretto for Lenz as her ‘selected poem’); to date, there has been no major study of these works. This thesis engages with Harwood’s opera texts, arguing for readings that are neither atomist nor reductive but jointly focused on both the effect of the text and the mechanics of its production. It begins by outlining the theoretical terrain of words and music studies and establishes an approach to Harwood and Sitsky’s operas based on the idea that opera’s textual exaggeration is a function of its multiple critical components; that is, the intersection of words and music, collaborative authorship, and dramatic language. The thesis then offers focused studies of each of these aspects in Harwood and Sitsky’s works, constructing a literary picture of the opera texts. Primary sources include the scores of the operas (usually copies of the composer’s autograph), selected correspondence between Sitsky and Harwood, drafts and typescripts of the libretti (held in the National Library, Canberra, and the Fryer Library, University of Queensland), and selected essays by Harwood on her words for music. / http://proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/login?url= http://library.adelaide.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=1331575 / Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Humanities, 2008

Colombias mångfasetterade problem : - En fallstudieanalys av landets avsaknad till liberal demokrati mellan åren 1991 - 2015

Nilsson, Christoffer January 2017 (has links)
This essay aims to explain why Colombia has not consolidated into a liberal democracy between the years 1991 to 2015. To examine the purpose of this essay five interactive arenas are analyzed in order to describe to which extent Colombia is affected by the various arenas. Three questions are being discussed and answered; to which extent have the political society and civil society affected the consolidation of a liberal democracy, to which extent have rule of law and the state bureaucracy affected the consolidation of a liberal democracy and, to which extent have the economic society affected the consolidation of a liberal democracy. The theoretical framework is based upon theories regarding different types of democracy and democratic consolidation. The essay is a theory consuming case study, with descriptive questions and explanatory approach. The framework is used to qualitatively illuminate empirical material to the study research questions. The conclusions of this essay shows that Colombia has not consolidated into a liberal democracy because of large illegal activities, physical attacks from non-state groups, widespread distrust of the political system and absence of conflict resolution through a democratic process.

Saved, by becoming a slave to the rhythm!

Holland, Duane Lee, Jr 01 January 2015 (has links)
Saved, By Becoming a Slave to the Rhythm!, is a choreographic work that demonstrates how an individual finds purpose through a rite of passage filled with freedom, music, and movement of the House dancing scene. Saved, reveals how DJ Larry Levan gained recognition from the community of the Paradise Garage Club, as one of the best DJs of his time. The work is split into three sections community, individual, and movement. The community section highlights the universal love, freedom, and multiculturalism of Paradise Garage that was generated by the charismatic control of Larry Levan's DJ mastery. Levan's charismatic mastery is what moved the Paradise Garage community to deem him one of the best DJs in House music history. The community section transitions into the individual section. The individual section showcases the demons of Levan's life. A solo, performed to the words of Levan's best friend, Frankie Knuckles, displays how his excessive lifestyle of drugs and sex became the key to his demise. The third section is an homage to Larry Levan, and members of the Paradise Garage community whom have passed on. I title this section the movement section, because it unveils the progression and stability of the House dance community. In addition to this cultural stability, the movement terminology of House dance is solidified. I want the audience to leave Saved, By Becoming a Slave to the Rhythm!, inspired to search for their purpose in life, find it, and live it lovingly, joyfully, and peacefully.
