The place of classical civilization in the school curriculum

Morton, Anne Caroline January 1985 (has links)
Classical Studies, as a subject, has not been seriously presented in many schools until fairly recently. Britain initiated the introduction of Classical Studies to the school curriculum in 1974, and interest has continued to grow steadily in other countries like America, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. This thesis was started on the assumption that this entirely new subject could be introduced into the curriculum for standard six and seven pupils at South African schools, for reasons which will be given later. As work continued on the thesis, the 1985 syllabus for Latin lent it further impetus. Some of the implications of the new Latin syllabus will be considered in the conclusion (Introduction, p. 6)

The meaning and use of the word vidua in Latin literature of the 2nd and 1st century B.C.

Koutseridi, Olga 16 December 2013 (has links)
The primary role of this report is to provide an in-depth analysis of all the instances of the word vidua, its meanings and uses in Latin literature from the last two centuries B.C. This close examination of the word vidua in the literary sources of this period has resulted in a number of important modifications to its definition. The word vidua, which is commonly translated by ancient scholars as widow, is not sustained by the contextual evidence of the majority of the passages that do no state explicitly the reason for the women's deprived status. Instead the word is most commonly used to mean a much broader social group of Roman women, all no longer married women, a category which includes various groups of women such as widows, divorcees, abandoned women and women whose husbands have been away for long periods of time. Furthermore the English word unmarried should not be used to translate the Latin word vidua since, as I demonstrate throughout my paper, there is a clear distinction in the Roman minds between women who are no longer married, vidua, and women who are not yet married, virgines an important distinction that gets lost with the more inclusive and broader social category meant by the word unmarried. / text

Heymericus de Campo: <i>Dyalogus super Reuelacionibus beate Birgitte</i> : A Critical Edition with an Introduction

Fredriksson Adman, Anna January 2003 (has links)
<p>This dissertation contains an edition of <i>Dyalogus super Reuelacionibus beate Birgitte</i>, which is a discussion and defence of the Revelations (<i>Reuelaciones</i>) of St. Birgitta of Sweden (ca. 1303-1373). In legal proceedings at the Council of Basle (1431-1449), the <i>Reuelaciones</i> were accused of heresy, examined and defended. Among the defenders was Heymericus de Campo (1395-1460), who at that time was professor of theology at the University of Cologne. In addition to the formal examination reports, Heymericus wrote a dialogue on the subject. The <i>Dyalogus</i>, which was probably composed as a contribution to a debate, is tentatively dated to have been written between October 1434 and February 17, 1435. The main part of <i>Dyalogus </i>consists of 123 text passages extracted from the <i>Reuelaciones</i> and accused of heresy, and Heymericus’ defence of these text passages. The aim of the defence is to prove that the <i>Reuelaciones</i> are truly orthodox and thus inspired by God. In addition, Heymericus intends to display the reasons and arguments the impugners had for questioning the <i>Reuelaciones</i>. <i>Dyalogus</i> and the other defences were read and copied foremost within the Birgittine order. The judgement passed at the proceedings called for a commentary before the <i>Reuelaciones</i> could be disseminated to the whole of their extent. To the Birgittines the defences of Basle filled this purpose, at least for some time. </p><p>The extensive introduction of the thesis deals with the historical context of the text, its use and importance, its place within the author’s literary production, the contents and language of the text, and finally the textual transmission. Vadstena Abbey’s copy of the text is chosen as base manuscript for the edition.</p>

Das preposições latinas às do português e do romeno: derivações semânticas / From Latin prepositions to Portuguese and Romanian ones: a study of semantic derivations

Mario Eduardo Viaro 18 November 1994 (has links)
The aim of this work is a study of the prepositions of three languages: Latin, Portuguese and Romanian. It is divided into two parts: a theoretical and a demonstrative one. In the first part, after the exposition of the method - comparative and diachronical -and the subject, namely the language and not the norm (according to COSERIU\\\'s definition), a survey about the use of the terms \\\"preposition\\\" and \\\"prefix\\\" is briefly developed from their origin until nowadays. After that, both terms are defined and their use is delimited. The problems concerning false prefixes, accidental prepositions and prepositional locutions are also dealt with. A formal distinction has been made among prepositions, prefixes and adverbs. The semantic plans (spatial, temporal, biossocial and grammatical) are afterwards explained. The spatial plan is the basic one, from which ali other ideas are derivated. · Some raciocination steps are at last listed and explained (\\\"semantic orientations\\\"). In the second part, some examples are exhibited, from which the theory of the first part was inferred and the eight following chapters deal about a determined movement or position: \\\"severance\\\", \\\"approximation\\\", \\\"means\\\", \\\"circularity\\\", \\\"verticality\\\", \\\"succession\\\", \\\"interiority\\\" and \\\"proximity\\\". Each is represented by some prepositions/ prefixes. Starting from the Latin, one arrives at both already mentioned romanic languages that, as everyone knows, are spoken in the most extreme parts of the Roman Empire. The author argues that the prepositions preserve a great portion of their original sense, if those semantic orientations are applied on them. So, one observes that they are not meaningless and their semantic intricacy should not be understood as an emptying.
