The identification and related application of kinetically efficient patterns in jazz guitar improvisation

de Waal, Hugo Adriaan January 2019 (has links)
Since the release of ‘Kind of Blue’ in 1959 by Miles Davis, various approaches to jazz improvisation have become more modal. Scales and their various modes has become a well-documented topic in music education. Through my own teaching I have noticed that learners do understand the theory and various applications of chord scales on harmonic structures but often fall short in the practical implementation on their instrument during improvisation. Lack of quick visualization of the various scale patterns by learners has proved to be more of a physical than musical issue. This leads to the research question: How do kinetically efficient actions and patterns interact to enable an improvising guitarist to navigate the fretboard most effectively? Pat Martino (1983) introduced a reduction concept where five master areas of activity based around minor patterns across the fretboard were identified. These five minor patterns were moved through various keys with slight fingering variations. Through my studies with John Fourie we explored the Martino reduction concept from a Dorian point of view. By recycling these Dorian patterns and application of a set of formulas, all seven modes of the major scale could be implemented in any key on the fretboard. Martino’s minor concept provided the foundation for this project, as well as further exploration under guidance of Johnny Fourie from 1998-2007. Five skilled participants performed various tasks from memory in the practical execution of master scale patterns and their intervallic formulas. Economy and efficiency were tested through vertical as well as horizontal movement across the fretboard by means of IPA, video recordings of semi-structured interviews and active research. This project finds that the standard tuning system of the guitar bids affordance to the improviser through implementation of a reduction concept with chunking of master scale patterns and their various intervallic applications. Through effective practice, repetition and practical application of these master scale patterns and intervallic formulas, effectivities become available during improvisation. It was found that the affordances of the instrument remain the same for various participants in the research undertaking, but their effectivities are variable and directly influenced by the participants’ individual perceptions and practical competencies. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology

Analytical Perspectives of Thematic Unity: Applications of Reductive Analysis to Selected Fugues by J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel

Perciballi, Adam C 01 February 2008 (has links)
Thematic unity in music occurs when elements from a musical idea appear frequently, in significant places and their presence is recognized or experienced on or beneath the surface. In fugal compositions, thematic unity is evident in the opening statement of the subject and it permeates each layer of its texture. Three analytical perspectives are used to investigate the degree to which local thematic material anticipates later structural features in Johan Sebastian Bach's Fugue in G minor WTC II, and Georg Frederic Handel's Fuga II in G Major. The analytical perspectives identify: (1) cohesive relationships between motivic fragments, (2) underlying motives and their relationships to keys and harmonic progressions, and (3) voice leading reductions relative to linear and tonal prolongation. Arnold Schoenberg, Hans Keller, and Rudolph Reti provide valuable insights concerning the organic nature of thematic material. The voice leading reductions of Heinrich Schenker and William Renwick offer procedures that reveal underlying thematic relationships. The cohesive elements of the selected fugues will be explained with reference to immediate and long-range relationships.

開票一路領先的對射證明 / A bijective proof of leading all the way

韓淑惠, Han, Shu-Hui Unknown Date (has links)
Suppose A and B are candidates for all election. A receives m votes and B receives n votes. If A stays ahead of B as the ballots are counted, we can think of a ballot permutation as a lattice path starting at (0,0), where votes for A are expressed as east (1,0) and votes for B are expressed as north (0,1). How to calculate the number of paths that A is always in the lead? We just count these paths from (0,0) to (m,n) that are under or touch the diagonal. However, the formula of combinatorial mathematics is not easy to obtain. So we hope to construct a model to resolve this problem. In this paper, we establish a one-to-one correspondence. The ways of A to receive at least m votes are always ahead the same as counting paths from (0,0) to (m,n). Finally, we find a bijective proof in the ballot problem. If there are many candidates, it will be a similar correspondence of one candidate leading the others.

Prediction and delay of 2D-laminar boundary layer separation near leading edges.

Dostovalova, Anna January 2002 (has links)
Boundary-layer flows near leading edges of generally curved obstacles have been studied for a long time. Apart from having many practical applications, the theory and approaches prevailing in this area stimulate development of a variety of computational tools and form a ground for testing them. The specific aim of this work is to study two-dimensional laminar boundary layer flows near the leading edges of airfoils and other elongated bodies, and to explore geometries for which boundary layer separation can be avoided. This class of problems is relevant to optimal design of wings, aircraft and projectile noses, laminar flow control methods and adaptive wing technology. One of the findings of this work suggests that local modifications to parabolic wing noses can yield up to 11% increase in the unseparated angle of attack. Another result obtained here is the set of shortest possible generalised elliptic noses of long symmetric bodies which allow unseparated flow. Methods adopted in this work are based on the combined use of numerically solved Prandtl equations written in Gortler variables, and inviscid solutions obtained semi-analytically by the conformal mapping method. The resulting technique being reliable, fast and computationally inexpensive, can complement or test the results obtained using a comprehensive CFD approach. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--School of Mathematical Sciences, 2002.

What women want : how companies can encourage women's career motivation

Ittonen Sjögren, Pia, Wieske, Kathrin January 2007 (has links)
<p>The under-representation of women in higher hierarchical positions and company boards today is a fact that affects not only the women striving for these positions but also the companies that face a loss of competent personnel in their companies. We found it interesting to find out whether or not women are striving for leading positions, in the first place and what factors motivate and discourage them to strive for a career and what incentives companies could offer to increase their motivation.</p><p>We adopt a company perspective in this thesis since we want to study this matter for the benefit of companies. If they knew more about what women want, they would be able to emphasize these conditions and motivate more women to strive for a career. Motivation theories as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Herzberg’s two-factor theory are used to give us a basic understanding of motivation and they also function as a foundation for our survey. Consequently, we follow a deductive approach.</p><p>This study is focusing on Swedish female business students and a survey among the female students of the USBE has been carried out to generate emprical data. We defined career in this thesis as: “striving for high hierarchical positions with high responsibility and decisive power”. The majority of respondents stated to be striving for a career but not everyone was striving according to our definition. We found almost half of the respondents to be to some extent striving for a career according to our definition and 42 percent agreed to completely strive for a career.</p><p>The most important motivating factors were found to be “to have a stimulating job” and “to be financially independent”. The strongest factors that have a negative influence on the respondents’ career motivation were “to have little time for family” and “to have a low salary in relation to work effort”. Furthermore, “equal salary for both men and woman”, “professional training” and “good promotion possibilities” were ranked the highest of the alternatives for incentives that companies could offer.</p><p>As the data suggested that the vast majority of our respondents can be encouraged in their career striving, companies should consider offering incentives and improving the general job conditions. The most promising strategies are adjusting the women’s salaries to those of their male colleagues, providing full-time day care near the workplace and offering professional training. The Swedish government could contribute in this field by enforcing the law that requires equal salries for both sexes, by stronger controlls and more severe punishments.</p><p>Suggestions for further research are, for instance, to study what companies actually do today to motivate women in their career striving.</p>

Konsekvensanalys : en värdefull delprocess vid förändringsarbete i organisationer / Impact Analysis : a valuable sub process in creating organizational change

Angemo, Per January 2009 (has links)
This thesis has two purposes:</p><p>1) To create a better understanding of how an impact analysis may affect the outcome of organizational change processes</p><p> </p><p>and</p><p> </p><p>2) To initiate the development of a tool for carrying out an impact analysis in an organizational change process and carry out an initial test of this tool.</p><p><strong>Method:</strong> This thesis is a qualitative case study. After an initial literature review, the method of data collection has been qualitative interviews of unstructured and semi-structured nature. In the analysis of collected data a hermeneutic approach has been applied.</p><p><strong>Result & Conclusion: </strong>The impact analysis carried out in this case study clearly shows how an impact analysis can affect the basis of decision making, planning and implementation of change in organizations. Thus theoretical as well as empirical ground has been found for its value in organizational change processes. <strong></strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>The test of the tool showed that the focus areas developed were perceived as relevant in the company context. The tool, however, most likely needs further development in the form of a user's guide to achieve an understanding of the focus areas, their content, and their impact on each other, good enough to be applied without using external consulting services. This was an initial assumption that was strengthened by the results of the study.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Suggestions for future research: </strong>One limitation of this study may be that the test of the tool had to be carried out at a different stage in the change process from what was initially planned. It would be suitable to test the tool at its originally suggested stage of a change process and also in an organization of a more diversified character. The above mentioned are both suggestions for future studies.</p><p><strong>Contribution of the thesis: </strong>My hope is that this thesis has created a better understanding of how an impact analysis may affect the outcome of organizational change projects. The development of a tool for carrying out an impact analysis has been initiated and in its future complete version this tool may well be of much help for organizations involved in organizational change projects.</p><p><strong>Key words: </strong>organizational change, impact analysis<strong>, </strong>change process, leading change</p>

Pedagogisk ledning för en pedagogisk verksamhet? : Om den kommunala förskolans ledningsstruktur

Styf, Maria January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is a total coverage survey of the municipal preschool management structure. In the late 90's the preschool in Sweden became the first step in the overall educational system. It became a pedagogical activity similar to school with respect to form and content. Although the focus was on education, political voices reclaimed the unique nature of preschool i.e. educare. It became a preschool in transition between its own tradition and modernization. The idea is that the educational management structure should support a pedagogical leadership that directs the pedagogical activity towards preschool objectives. The local authority sets the structure for management in pre-school; a municipality that in itself is an institution with its own goals and objectives. These objectives can place the municipalities in the cross pressure between their own objectives and the ones for preschool. The question in this respect is; How is the management structure formed and why? Is it a structure formed with the intention of creating educational management for the local preschool or are there other factors that guide the design? A framework based on the historical background of the preschools and theoretical terms such as steering, leading, management, pedagogical leadership, educational activity, etc. was constructed. Results are based on an online questionnaire survey. 180 municipalities out of 290 answered the questionnaire, which gives a response rate at 62 %. The response rate is evenly distributed across municipal categories, categories that the municipalities were aggregated into, formed by The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. The categories were handled as survey units, to support a part of the analysis and to allow a comparison between the municipalities by municipality size, both demographic and geographic. The material was analysed using the SPSS statistical program and compiled and reported with descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics were used to demonstrate the material's characteristics and the central tendency. The results show that the municipalities’ structure of management is varied. Different municipal categories do not change this varied picture of the management landscape significantly. Although the management structure varies regarding how many levels with formal titles and which positions and functions they should have, there is a consistency in which title that the formal leader for the preschool have. The municipalities primarily utilisea principalship with mixed responsibility for both preschool and school. In light of these results, do municipalities mould a structure for the educational management for the pedagogical activities in preschool? Yes and no: the municipalities do not form a structure for preschool alone. Results show that the municipalities' main purpose is not to create a line of management specifically for the preschool. The municipalities form a management structure for educational purposes dealing with an educational activity from preschool to elementary school. The new Education Act (2010:800), is a step toward distinguishing preschool leadership from school leadership and turns the leadership of preschools into a title solely for the position and function of preschool educational activities.

Role of yeast DNA polymerase epsilon during DNA replication

Isoz, Isabelle January 2008 (has links)
Each cell division, the nuclear DNA must be replicated efficiently and with high accuracy to avoid mutations which can have an effect on cell function. There are three replicative DNA polymerases essential for the synthesis of DNA during replication in eukaryotic cells. DNA polymerase α (Pol α) synthesize short primers required for DNA polymerase δ (Pol δ) and DNA polymerase ε (Pol ε) to carry out the bulk synthesis. The role of Pol δ and Pol ε at the replication fork has been unclear. The aim of this thesis was to examine what role Pol ε has at the replication fork, compare the biochemical properties of Pol δ and Pol ε, and to study the function of the second largest and essential subunit of Pol ε, Dpb2. To identify where Pol ε replicates DNA in vivo, a strategy was taken where the active site of Pol ε was altered to create a mutator polymerase leaving a unique error-signature. A series of mutant pol ε proteins were purified and analyzed for enzyme activity and fidelity of DNA synthesis. Two mutants, M644F and M644G, exhibited an increased mutation rate and close to normal polymerase activity. One of these, the M644G gave rise to a specific increase of mismatch mutations resulting from T-dTMP mis-pairing during DNA synthesis in vitro. The M644G mutant was introduced in yeast strains carrying a reporter gene, URA3, on either side of an origin in different orientations. Mutations which inactivated the URA3 gene in the M644G mutant strains were analyzed. A strand specific signature was found demonstrating that Pol ε participates in the synthesis of the leading strand. Pol δ and Pol ε are both stimulated by the processivity clamp, PCNA, in in vitro replication assays. To clarify any differences they were challenged side by side in biochemical assays. Pol ε was found to require that single-stranded template (ssDNA) was entirely coated with RPA, whereas Pol δ was much less sensitive to uncoated ssDNA. The processivity of Pol δ was stimulated to a much higher degree by PCNA than of Pol ε. In presence of PCNA the processivity of Pol δ and Pol ε was comparable. In contrast, Pol ε was approximately four times slower than Pol δ when replicating a single-primed circular template in the presence of all accessory proteins and an excess of polymerase. The biochemical characterization of the system suggests that Pol ε and Pol δ are loaded onto the PCNA-primer-ternary complex by separate mechanisms. A model is proposed where the loading of Pol ε onto the leading strand is independent of the PCNA interaction motif which is required by enzymes acting on the lagging strand. The essential gene DPB2 encodes for the second largest subunit of Pol ε. We carried out a genetic screen in S.cerevisiae and isolated a lethal mutant allele of dpb2 (dpb2-200). When over-expressed together with the remaining three subunits of Polε, Pol2, Dpb3 and Dpb4, the dpb2-201 did not copurify. The biochemical property of Pol2/Dpb3/Dpb4 complex was compared with wild-type four-subunit Pol ε (Pol2/Dpb2/Dpb3/Dpb4) and a Pol2/Dpb2 complex in replication assays. The absence of Dpb2 in the complex did not significantly affect the specific activity or the processivity, but gave a slightly reduced efficiency in holoenzyme assays when compared to wild-type four-subunit Pol ε. We propose that Dpb2 is not essential for the enzyme activity of Pol ε.

The management strategy research for automobile selling industry in Taiwan¡Ðin the case of K company

Yu, Chien-chiung 31 July 2007 (has links)
Because of the transportation network achieves little by little. It cuts down the distances between cities and countries. Automobiles are indispensable to our lives now. The development of industries after Taiwan became a member of WTO. Many country industries of automobile join the WTO by a lot of ways. Abolish the import¡¦s limitation of automobiles. Many brands join the WTO one after another, and it is too difficult to compete with other industries. The main goal to the research is to provide the marketing strategy and experience in Taiwan to the industries. Then we can discover that the loyalty of brand, the service system and the process are the key point of sell except the 4Ps¡]Product, Pricing, Promotion and Placement¡^. The marketing scope sell amounts are 500,000 per year. It can not be called economy scope, but the domestic product achieves dozens of investor, and the import investors are the same. Now the automobile markets in Taiwan are well-developed. There are a lot of competitors, and how the industry to decide marketing strategy in limited resources is a key point to succeed. The research will focus on how to match the marketing strategy, resources and design a suitable marketing strategy. Double cards effect makes the expense index depression in 2006. The consumption marketing shows that the index is decreased substantially. The entire markets are declined seriously and the other industries and spread by the index, too. Most of the profit are declined even there are some deficits. The double cards effect fluctuate the economy, and our companies are affected by the amount of automobiles, but the market share rates above 32 percents. When we participated in the strategies of designation we discovered that: 1. Change the organization of company. 2. Marketing¡]after selling¡^strategy. 3. The competitive advantage of difference. 4. The influence on marketing strategy to selling amount. The following are the key points of analyzing the result: 1. To choose the circuit location. 2. To combine the sales and services. 3. To service flow innovation. 4. The vehicle owner holds it grasping rate. 5. To increase the technique and build the service center. Pay much attention to our brand, and ally our brand with other industries. Lead our brand to the top world of automobiles
