Proposal to optimize the flow of preparation and delivery of vehicles to dealers based on the Lean methodology

Currently, there is a monthly breach with its vehicle delivery policy. This policy refers to said company, it refers to a minimum of 92% of units towards the points of sale. However, in the last quarter of 2017 and the semester of 2018, it has only been met from 82% to 90%. These are 5% -10% that have not come to meet in each month, but also directly to the profitability of the company. On the one hand, storage costs are increased by each car that does not arrive or dissatisfaction is generated by the customer, this is the problem of 3 main causes, which is the installation time of radios, installation of alarms and more vehicles that are not served in the damage assessment area. As a root cause, we have the first, since, on the one hand, a bottleneck is generated by the lack of car attention and, on the other hand, represents 20% of the monthly sales of the case study, For what needs to be done to reduce this bottleneck and increase the capacity of the vehicles in this area, the damage is detailed, two lines of evaluation are carried out. This type of triage, we ensure a standardized work, since there was a group of vehicles waiting with different types of damage in the same operating line. Also, the delivery of vehicles on time is improved to 95% and the times of the areas of installation of radios, installation of alarms and damage assessment are reduced by 42.85%, 51.42% and 50% respectively.

Lean Administration och värdeflödeskartläggning genom FlexSim. : En fallstudie inom ett fakturaflöde.

Lean is a philosophy with the purpose of increasing value from the customer perspective, through the continuous elimination of waste. During the last decades, the implementation of this philosophy has expanded to the service sector and administrative support processes. The last decades have also shown a major increase of employment within the service sector in Sweden, giving validity to the implementation of lean within administrative support processes. The implementation of this philosophy within the service sector can be associated with the term lean administration.  The purpose of this study is to suggest efficiency improvements by applying value stream mapping within the invoice flow of an industrial company's financial unit and to provide recommendations regarding an implementation of lean administration. The purpose of this study is based upon the problems that the financial unit faces today regarding inefficiencies within the invoice flow due to redundant processes and a lack of standardized work. The purpose of this study and research questions are fulfilled by performing a literature study as well as a case study which included qualitative interviews and quantitative observations.  The current invoice flow has through the simulation program FlexSim been mapped and analyzed. The authors have been able to construct a recommended invoice flow, with the current flow as a point of reference. The recommended flow shows that a 46% decrease in active process time per invoice can be achieved. This decrease of active process time per invoice alongside an implementation of lean administration can benefit the financial unit in the long term.  After interviews, observations and discussions with the case company, the suggested efficiency improvements presented in this study, can be considered applicable within and outside of the observed financial unit. The suggestions for improvement are based on the value stream mapping through FlexSim and could be achieved through an application of the recommended invoice flow. The case company should also consider a future implementation of lean administration and its associated improvement tools 5S, 5-Why and PDCA-cycles.

Increasing competitiveness of service companies: developing conceptual models for implementing Lean Management in service companies

Lean management is a philosophy focused on identifying and eliminating waste throughout a product’s entire value stream. It originates from the manufacturing system of Japanese automotive manufacturer Toyota and attracted due to its tremendous success widespread attention worldwide. Lean promises significant benefits in terms of waste reduction, and increased organizational and supply chain communication and integration.Generally, in terms of operations and improvements service companies are far behind manufacturing industries. Transferring Lean management concept from the manufacturing shop floor to services might offer opportunities for improvements. Many manufacturing businesses have improved and profited by the use of Lean management methods and tools. Yet the benefits haven’t been as nearly as impressive for service industries applying Lean management principles.The challenge in applying Lean to services is the lack of widely available references for implementing Lean in a service organization. Although some successful examples of Lean implementations in service businesses could be noticed in the past no standardized framework or general guideline was solidified for implementing Lean management in service organizations. In addition, implementing Lean and achieving the levels of organizational commitment, employee autonomy, and information transparency needed to ensure its success is a complicated task.This paper approaches to develop a conceptual framework for implementing Lean management in service organizations. Based on a sound theoretical foundation of Lean management methods in production and considerations about service management, challenges of implementing Lean in a service environment are derived. Ultimately, a conceptual framework is developed to implement Lean management approach in service businesses using a specific set of Lean tools.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a model for assessing cost effectiveness of applying lean tools. The model consists of eight phases: it starts by understanding customers' requirements using Voice of Customer (VOC) and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) tools. In phase 2, the current state of plant is assessed using lean profile charts based on Balanced Scorecard (BSC) measures. In phase 3 and phase 4, identification of critical problem(s) and generating of improvement suggestion(s) are performed. Phase 5 provide evaluation of the cost effectiveness of implementing the suggested lean methods based on life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) and phase 6 prefers the right alternative based on multiple criteria decision making (MCDM). In phase 7 the selected alternative is supposed to be implemented and finally the user should monitor and control the process to make sure that the improvement is going as planned. The model was verified successfully using a case study methodology at one Swedish sawmill called Södra Timber in Ramkvilla, one part of Södra group. Results obtained from the study showed that the production and human resources perspectives are the most critical problem areas that need to be improved. They got the lowest scores in the lean profile, 63% and 68%, respectively. Using value stream mapping (VSM) it was found that the non value added (NVA) ratios for the core and side products are 87.4% and 90.4%, respectively. Using the model, three improvement alternatives were suggested and evaluated using LCCA and MCDM. Consequently, implementing 5S got the highest score, second came redesigning the facility layout. However, it was estimated that 4.7 % of NVA for the side product would be reduced by redesigning the facility layout. The recommendations were suggested for the company to improve their performance. The novelty of the thesis is based on the fact that it addresses two main issues related to lean manufacturing: firstly, suggesting lean techniques based on assessment of lean profile that is based on BSC and QFD, and secondly assessing the cost effectiveness of the suggested lean methods based on LCCA and MCDM. This thesis provides a generalized model that enables the decision-maker to know and measure, holistically, the company performance with respect to customer requirements. This will enable the company to analyze the critical problems, suggest solutions, evaluate them and make a cost effective decision. Thus, the company can improve its competitiveness.

Therefore, the tool which is going to be used must be adequate and capable of measuring in the best possible way the real state of the construction company against lean philosophy. This research's objective is to develop a tool to evaluate the degree of implementation of the lean construction in building companies. The LCAT (Lean Construction Assessment Tool) has been developed based on other tools previously proposed with the aim of supply the deficiencies presented by them, mainly the absence of statistical treatment and in the fidelity of the results. Using multivariate data analysis techniques, such as hierarchical group analysis, form revisions were performed, which, according to the comparative tests executed, increased their level of replication and applicability. The evaluation form was analyzed by experts, who classified the items as their importance, complexity and time of implementation. The Fuzzy Inference System was utilized in order to reduce the subjectivity and interpretation bias of the evaluator, which generated closer results between two different applicators to the same object of study. As a secondary result, the participating companies of the applications were evaluated towards the implementation of the lean construction. It was noticed that the companies, for the most part, still do not apply lean construction concepts and tools, evidences were found only of the application practices that interfaced with other areas of management, such as quality and planning. / O uso de ferramentas para a análise da implementação e uso de práticas e princípios da construção enxuta é extremamente necessário para que estas sejam bem-sucedidas e tragam os resultados esperados. Para isso, a ferramenta a ser utilizada deve ser adequada e capaz de aferir da melhor maneira possível o real estado da empresa construtora frente à filosofia enxuta. O objetivo desse trabalho é desenvolver uma ferramenta de avaliação do grau de implementação da construção enxuta em empresas construtoras. A LCAT (Lean Construction Assessment Tool) foi desenvolvida com base em outras ferramentas anteriormente propostas com o intuito de suprir as carências por elas apresentadas, principalmente no tratamento estatístico e na fidelidade dos resultados. Utilizando-se de análise multivariada de dados, foram feitas duas grandes revisões no formulário, que, de acordo com testes comparativos realizados, aumentaram seu nível de replicação e aplicabilidade. Como resultado secundário, avaliou-se as empresas participantes das aplicações frente à implementação da construção enxuta. Percebeu- se que as empresas, em sua grande maioria, ainda não aplicam conceitos e ferramentas da construção enxuta, sendo que foram encontradas evidências de aplicação apenas de práticas com interface com outras áreas de gestão, como qualidade e planejamento.

Implementation of Lean Tools in the Garments Industry to Improve Productivity

A few years back, almost every garment manufacturer industry started implementing “lean Manufacturing.” Garments manufacturing is one of the oldest manufacturing systems, compromising a higher number of critical operations. The main performance indicators in the garment industry are the lead time, production rate, more wastage, and labor intensity. To remain competitive in the global market, the most important task for garments manufacturers is to reduce lead time and waste, which is also essential for productivity and long-term stable development. A headlong rush to reduce lead time and waste by turning into lean and responsive manufacturing has created an urgency for researchers and practitioners to apply new tools and techniques for discovering wastages. This thesis focuses on the application of value stream mapping in the garments industry to implement lean manufacturing system. Value stream mapping (VSM) helps visualize Material Flow and Information Flows of all components, cycle times, and utilization of resources. VSM is a proven lean technique in identifying and eliminating wastes in accommodation with similar or identical product routings. The research approach adopted in this thesis is abductive. Qualitative has been collected by the structured and semi-structured interviews. A single case observation has been made to use VSM as a lean tool to achieve productivity improvement at a selected garment company. Both current and future state mapping of cutting section and sewing line scenarios are discussed using value stream concepts. This was analyzed along with the process lead time as standard minute value (SMV) calculation and two gaps as productive time and non-productive.  Finally, gain in productivity (increase output pcs, less worker, less working hours), increased productive time, and reduce non-productive time was calculated.

Implementering av Lean med hjälp av värdering, principer och verktyg i ett mindre tillverkande företag : En fallstudie på Ackert Reklam AB

I dagens arbetsklimat uppstår hela tiden olika utmaningar för tillverkande företag och organisationer. Ökad konkurrens, utvecklingar av olika tillverknings- och informationstekniker samt alltmer krävande kunder är några av utmaningarna. Ett sätt att lyckas maximera kundvärde samtidigt som den interna produktiviteten och effektiviteten ökar är att implementera konceptet Lean, vilket kort kan sammanfattas som att göra mer med mindre.  Ackert Reklam är ett litet familjeägt aktiebolag som grundades 1982. Företaget producerar dekormaterial i olika former, allt från enklare kampanjdekorer till mer avancerade reflexdekorer. Ackerts filosofi är att på ett så kostnadseffektivt sätt som möjligt lyckas lösa kundernas behov av högklassig visuell kommunikation. I dagsläget har företaget problem i form av bristande standardisering av deras arbetssätt och letar därför efter lösningar inom Lean.  Syftet med den här studien var att hjälpa företaget att standardisera sina arbetssätt och finna rutiner med hjälp av en implementering av olika värderingar, principer och verktyg inom Lean. För att lyckas uppnå syftet togs två mål med studien fram: -          Identifiera befintliga värderingar, principer och verktyg inom Lean som går att anpassa på mindre tillverkande företaget.  -          Ta fram en implementationsmetod av Lean, i form av ett ramverk, som går att applicera på mindre tillverkande företag.   Studien genomfördes i form av en kvalitativ fallstudie där datainsamlingen utfördes med hjälp av intervjuer och observationer. Totalt utfördes en ostrukturerad intervju och sju semi-strukturerade intervjuer. Observationerna gjordes genom att fysiskt befinna sig på arbetsplatsen och studera arbetsprocessen.  Med hjälp av datainsamlingen i form av intervjuer och observationer samt av teori i form av olika värderingar, principer och verktyg inom Lean kunde en slutsats och rekommendationer tas fram. Studien visar att en implementation av Lean kan hjälpa Ackert att standardisera sina arbetssätt om den sker på rätt sätt och olika kritiska faktorer tas i beaktning. Företaget rekommenderas att följa det framtagna ramverket där initialt fokus ska ligga på att skapa en god intern kommunikation samt att träna och utbilda anställda inom Lean.
