Exploring Cyber Ranges in Cybersecurity Education

According to a report from McAfee, the global cost of cybercrime for 2020 was over one trillion dollars (Smith, Z. et al., 2020). Cybersecurity breaches and attacks have not only cost businesses and organizations millions of dollars but have also threatened national security and critical infrastructure. Examples include the Ransomware attack in May of 2021 on the largest fuel pipeline in the United States and the February 2021 remote access system breach of a Florida water treatment facility which raised sodium hydroxide to a lethal level. Improving cybersecurity requires a skilled workforce with relevant knowledge and skills. Academic degree programs, boot camps, and various certification programs provide education and training to assist this need. Cyber ranges are a more recent development to provide hands-on skill training. These ranges, often virtual, provide a safe and accessible environment to improve practical skills and experience through hands-on application. They provide a training environment to identify threats, apply countermeasures, and secure data from risks separately from the organization's actual network. More and more academic programs utilize cyber ranges due to the perceived benefit of integrating them into their cybersecurity-related programs. Academic cyber ranges offer virtualized environments that support cybersecurity educators' needs to provide students with a safe, separated, and engaging environment. The purpose of my research has two components: 1) to understand who the educators are using academic-facing cyber ranges and how they are using them to support their cybersecurity education efforts, and 2) to understand how cybersecurity educators and students are motivated by using them. Specifically, my research is comprised of three manuscripts: (1) a mixed-method exploratory study of who are the educators using cyber ranges for cybersecurity education and how they are using them to create significant cybersecurity learning experiences, (2) a mixed-method study exploring the motivation of educators using a cyber range for cybersecurity education, and (3) a mixed-method study exploring student motivation participating in cybersecurity CTF competitions. The three manuscripts contribute to understanding cyber ranges in cybersecurity education. The results from my research provided insight from the users of these cyber ranges, cybersecurity educators and students. Results from my first manuscript suggested that high school cybersecurity educators are the primary users. These educators have less formal cybersecurity education and experience compared to cybersecurity educators in higher education. The data also showed that cybersecurity educators primarily used cyber ranges for teaching and learning to meet learning goals and objectives. Results from my second manuscript suggested that educators were motivated mainly by the importance of using a cyber range for cybersecurity education and for the interest-enjoyment their students experience from cyber range usage. Educators found using the cyber range made their class more engaging and relevant to their students.These educators were also confident they could use a cyber range and learn how to use it. However, those without prior experience in cybersecurity or previous experience using a cyber range shared they needed instructor-facing resources, professional development opportunities, and time to learn. Results from my third manuscript suggested that students were motivated by the importance of participating in a cybersecurity CTF competition. Many reported that participating was useful for developing professional skills and readiness. Although CTF competitions were considered difficult and stressful, students did not consider the difficulty pejorative. Many shared that challenging CTFs contributed towards the enjoyment of participating, making them a rewarding and worthwhile experience. However, students also shared that academic and team support contributed towards their confidence in competing. In contrast, those who did not report confidence, stated they lacked a team strategy or support from their academic institution. Additionally, they did not know what to expect to prepare before the competition event. Overall, the results of this dissertation highlight the importance of prior preparation for educators and student CTF participants. For educators, this prior preparation includes curriculum supporting resources such as content mapping to learning objectives and professional development opportunities that do not assume any prior knowledge or experience. For students, prior preparation includes understanding what to expect and recommendations for academic and team support. / Doctor of Philosophy / The technology era has enabled a global connectedness to attend conferences and meetings via our laptop computers while working from home. The proliferation of smart devices has also provided a means to view and communicate with visitors who ring our smart doorbells while we are not home. This interconnected network, i.e., the Internet, has altered how we pay our bills, buy our groceries, and attend classes virtually. It has also enabled cyber attacks and breaches that have contributed to identity thefts, increasing financial costs, business collapses, job losses, and even threatened national security. A cybersecurity workforce has become increasingly vital to address the need for improving cybersecurity. Thus, there is a need for academic cybersecurity programs to prepare future professionals to fill this national workforce shortfall. Consequently, more and more organizations have integrated cyber ranges as the means to provide a simulated environment for applying and developing cybersecurity-related knowledge and skills. Similar to a driving range for a golfer to practice their golf swing or a shooting range for those in law enforcement to earn their firearms qualifications, a cyber range supports efforts to provide cybersecurity training with hands-on exercises and labs to practice skills in a safe, virtual environment. My research contributes to understanding who uses cyber ranges and how they are motivated to use them for cybersecurity education. The first purpose of my research was to understand the educators who were using cyber ranges and how they were using them for cybersecurity education. More specifically, I examined their usage for alignment with a learning taxonomy to verify the usage contributed to successful and significant student learning. This understanding contributed to my research's second purpose, which explored how educators were motivated using cyber ranges. The third purpose of my study explored student motivation using a cyber range. Due to varying cyber range resources and activities, my research focused on the cybersecurity competition activity, Capture the Flag (CTF). This study provided an understanding of how students who participated in a cybersecurity CTF competition were motivated. My research demonstrates that educators and students are interested in using cyber ranges and believe using them for cybersecurity education and professional readiness is important. However, both educators and students who lack prior knowledge or experience using a cyber range or participating in a CTF shared the concern of not knowing what they do not know. PD time and instructor-facing resources that do not assume any prior cybersecurity knowledge were recommended to support educators who did not have a background or experience in cybersecurity. Students shared that although not knowing was stressful and made participating difficult, the difficulty and stress were good attributes because if the CTF were easy, it wouldn't be worth their time and would be less rewarding. Students also reported that team strategies and academic support were motivational aspects of CTF participation. Overall, educators and students were motivated using cyber ranges for cybersecurity education, but professional development and preparation resources would contribute positively to their usage.

All in a day's work : student nurses' perceptions of their clinical learning experiences in a corporate workplace context

Individual student perceptions of this multi-dimensional context can greatly influence their clinical learning experiences. Insight into these perceptions may assist nurse educators in facilitating optimal learning outcomes. Aim: The aim of this study was to promote an awareness of the possible impact of various aspects of the clinical learning environment and nursing students’ perceptions thereof, on their learning experiences; and to generate guidelines for facilitating optimal learning outcomes. Methods: A qualitative, interpretive study, investigating nine individual second-year nursing students, was undertaken in a private hospital in South Africa. Interview transcripts were thematically analyzed. Results: Four themes and eleven sub-themes emerged, highlighting the impact of student nurses’ perceptions of the various aspects of the clinical learning environment on their learning experiences. Discussion: The impact of students’ perceptions of the clinical learning environment on their learning experiences is discussed. Recommendations are provided for measures to increase the focus on student-centered learning in the selected clinical context. Conclusion: The challenge remains to best prepare students for the complexities and dynamics of the workplace learning environment, while at the same time modifying this environment to effectively meet students’ learning needs.

The Learning Experiences of Nontraditional Students Enrolled in Organizational Management and Business Administration Cohort- and Study-group Programs

The primary purpose of the study was to examine the learning experiences of nontraditional students enrolled in organizational management and business administration cohort- and study-group programs at four, small, private, church-related, arts-based colleges in Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. The objective of the study was to examine how cohorts and study groups were implemented at four colleges. In addition, the study explored ways that cohorts and study groups contributed to students' satisfaction and academic performance levels, interpersonal relations, and leadership skills. Three hundred forty-five informants and respondents participated in this study. The subjects included 286 students enrolled in organizational management and business administration programs at four small, private, church-related, arts-based colleges (referred to as A, B, C, and D) that were located in southeastern United States. Using a qualitative research design, the researcher also gathered information by interviewing one pilot focus group, consisting of 5 participants, and four official focus groups, consisting of 25 participants. Through the use of content analysis, information was codified into a questionnaire used to explore students' perceptions of cohorts and study groups. Student questionnaires were hand delivered; thus, 286 students responded, and an 88% return rate resulted. Additionally, information about the effectiveness of cohorts and study groups and structural design and variables of cohorts and study groups was collected through four individual student interviews, In addition, 25 surveys were sent to instructors, and 17 (68%) responded. Four program directors and four employers of students responded to questionnaires, for a return rate of 100%. Based on students' responses, this study reveals that cohorts and study groups increase satisfaction, raise academic performance levels, strengthen interpersonal relations, and enhance leadership skills. Data collected from program directors, instructors, and employers supported the results of the student self-reports. Recommendations were made for a refinement of the instrument, which would request additional quantitative data, and replication of the study at other colleges nationwide. Further recommendations included a more thorough study of employers' attitudes, a comparison of mandatory and voluntary study groups, an investigation of cohort-student dropouts, the benefits of mentoring, the effectiveness of class representatives, use of personality tests to determine study-group membership, and attitudes of college administrators and their support offices and boards toward nontraditional programs.

Preservice Teachers' Perceptions of their Perspective Transformations: A Case Study

Utilizing a case study approach, this study explored the perspectives of preservice teachers as they relate to working with students with disabilities in inclusive classroom settings. Preservice teachers' perceptions about the extent, if any, their learning experiences during teacher preparation contributed to their perspectives was examined through a sequential exploratory design that employed both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings of this case study of six (6) elementary and secondary preservice teachers indicated that the experiences they had during their final student teaching (internship) were the most meaningful triggers of their perspective transformations. The findings further indicated that four (4) of the six (6) preservice teachers who identified they had a positive perspective toward including students with disabilities in their classrooms experienced a change in the directionality of that perspective to a less positive perspective following their final student teaching experience (internship). The use of the case study method, with its reliance on theoretical propositions and multiple sources of evidence, offered an effective way to better understand the perceived change in perspectives of these preservice teachers. The use of the Learning Activities Survey (LAS) to first ascertain whether or not preservice teachers perceived they had a perspective transformation offered a strong starting point to begin this investigation. When combined with additional qualitative data in the form of semi-structured interviews and document analysis, the structure of Yin's case study approach provided strong evidence supporting the nature and extent of preservice teachers' perspective transformations toward including students with disabilities. Implications of this study include recommendations for designing meaningful learning experiences for preservice teachers, a call for action research within teacher education, and purposeful provision of support and relationship building that goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge and skills and facilitates transformative learning.

Defining and Measuring Learner-Content Interaction in Digitally Augmented Learning Experiences

Using content analysis, researchers reviewed literature to identify the meanings attached to and methods used for measuring learner-content interaction in digitally augmented learning experience. Digitally augmented learning experiences are defined in this dissertation as situations where a learner interacts with content delivered using a computer. Examples include online learning using a desktop, laptop, or mobile device, classroom use of a device to interact with content such as a digital textbook, computer simulation, augmented or virtual reality, smart watch or phone, or other similar educational activities. These activities can be delivered directly from a digital device, over a wireless connection, or via the internet. Digitally augmented learning experiences can be web-based, cloud-based, or loaded on a device; streamed or downloaded; fully online, or part of a classroom experience, such as a blended-learning situation. Current discourse surrounding learner-content interaction in digitally augmented learning environments showed themes of label, theory, measurement, types of content, pedagogy, and looking forward. The label theme describes the use of the term as a research variable or other use where no context was given. Theory includes mentions of Moore's transactional distance (1973) or list of interaction types (1989), Anderson's Equivalency Theorem (2003), and other related educational theories. The measurement theme included all mentions of how learner-content interaction was evaluated, measured, or quantified. Types of content included descriptions of specific content learners interacted with, such as textbooks, online text, discussion boards, simulations, assignments, and assessments. Pedagogy included mentions of student learning, knowledge construction, and understanding that did not include mention of a specific learning theory. The looking forward theme includes suggestions for researchers and practitioners surrounding learner-content interaction. This dissertation discusses strengths and weaknesses of current tools used to measure learner-content interaction in digitally augmented learning experiences. Based on the strengths and weaknesses found in current measurement tools an integrated measurement tool was developed and evaluated for content validity.

Supporting Elementary Education In-Service Teachers' Proficiency in Planning STEM-Centric Lessons

The purpose of this study was to explore the McDaniel College Elementary STEM Instructional Leader (ESIL) pilot cohort's ability to proficiently plan lessons that incorporated the Maryland State STEM Standards of Practice (SOP), targeting integration of STEM content, inquiry learning, students' abilities to collaborate as a STEM team and students' strategic application of technology. Data collection, in the form of reviewing and analyzing study participants' lesson plans and self-reflections, was completed by three independent assessors. The researcher examined the interrater reliability among the three assessors using the Fleiss' kappa statistic. A 0.91 proportion of agreement consensus was documented among the three assessors. A test of hypothetical value was conducted using the nonparametric Wilcoxon-signed-rank Test. Interpretation of the Wilcoxon-signed-rank Test results suggest that the sample population demonstrated proficient planning abilities for the four targeted Maryland State STEM SOP. Findings from this research add to the field's knowledge of elements in the promotion of graduate coursework that leads to elementary in-service teachers' proficiency in planning STEM-centric lessons, however the findings also have broader implications for teacher education at large. The McDaniel College ESIL model could frame K-12 teacher education for both pre-service and in-service teachers. The pragmatic, hybrid experience maximizes flexibility, promotes analytical thinking and self-reflection and builds communication skills. The introduction and development of inquiry and design-based learning through the 7E Learning Cycle develops the teachers' understanding of practices promoted not only within the Maryland State STEM SOP, but also within the Next Generation Science Standards. The McDaniel College ESIL model also builds upon the collective efforts of academia, a non-profit STEM research facility, and local school divisions to align efforts that may lead to transformational changes for education. Essential ingredients for systemic change are embedded within the McDaniel ESIL model. / Ed. D.

The interpretation and delivery of the Welsh Foundation Phase and its contribution to physical literacy

The introduction of the Foundation Phase gave a unique opportunity to study the interpretation and delivery of a play-based early childhood curriculum. This new curriculum saw the disappearance of Physical Education for pupils under the age of seven in Wales. Physical Education is acknowledged as more than the development of physical competence, being part of a process concerned with lifelong physical, intellectual, social and emotional learning accrued through a range of physical activities, in a variety of contexts (Doherty and Brennan, 2008). As such a goal of Physical Education is physical literacy, (Hardman, 2011; Talbot, 2007). In light of this, this research set out to explore the contribution of the Foundation Phase to the development of children’s physical literacy. In order to achieve this, a three-phase complementarity mixed-methods design (Greene et al., 1989) was used to generate data over two years in selected schools in Wales. The schools were found to be enacting the Foundation Phase with fidelity to the original aims of the policy makers by demonstrating the key features of play-based active learning, focused adult-led sessions, child-initiated learning, and use of the outdoors for learning. In so doing they were deemed to be successful in achieving the aim of the Foundation Phase of developing independent, motivated active learners. The Foundation Phase was also found to be supporting the development of children’s cognitive development with good levels of achievement in literacy and numeracy assessments. The playful pedagogy observed in the schools enabled the pupils to have autonomy in their learning. Pupils were motivated, active and engaged in embodied learning both indoors and outdoors. The findings indicated that the Foundation Phase was making a positive contribution to the development of children’s physical literacy.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This study attempts to understand how distance education practices influence the learning of calculus. Understanding student learning in a distance education environment is an important factor to consider in improving the learning experiences of those students who for one reason or the other opt not to study in conventional institutions of higher education. On one hand, understanding student learning may illuminate the influences that the learning environment has on student learning and on the other hand, it may inform on how learning experiences can be improved. The aim of this study is to acquire a deeper understanding of the diverse manner in which distance students learn calculus. Specific focus is also placed on how the distance education context of the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) influences student learning. The study describes a group of students' experiences of learning calculus in the ZOU distance education environment. The study also describes the students' learning styles and relates these to their mathematical understanding of certain calculus concepts. The specific content topics of "limit of function" and "derivative of function" are used to view achievement and performance, thereby indicating the distance students' mathematical understanding. The information processing learning theory is used as the theoretical framework for this study. The constructs of learning styles and mathematical understanding are used to illuminate the student's learning processes. The study used the Felder-Silverman learning styles model and Hiebert and Carpenter's notion of mathematical understanding to expound these constructs. The distance education environment of the B.Sc. Mathematics and Statistics (BSMS) programme at the ZOU provided the context of the study and an interpretive case study approach was adopted. A group of students registered in a first year first semester calculus course were studied. Data were collected from students based in four ZOU regional centres; namely Harare, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, and Masvingo. These regional centres were conveniently selected for the study on the basis of proximity and accessibility. A total sample of twenty six students was involved and data for the in-depth part of the study emanated from five students who were purposively selected to participate in interviews. The interviewees were selected on the basis of their performance in a written calculus test. Data for this study were collected through use of learning journals, learning styles preference questionnaires, calculus tests and interviews. The data on students' learning experiences were predominantly qualitative in nature though supported by some quantitative data. The data on learning styles and mathematical understanding were also qualitatively analysed and presented case by case for the five interviewees. The study established that in a distance education system, the type of learning environment has the potential to influence students' learning, both positively and negatively, of which the main contributing factor is the learning support system. The study found that the learning support system provided by the institution and distance educators can have an impact on student learning. With reference to the calculus course in the BSMS programme, the study identified specific aspects where the environment facilitated or deterred learning. The study also revealed that students have varied learning style preferences, and that the learning environment has the potential to impact on students' learning styles. Since learning styles occupy a central place when it comes to improving distance learning materials, the study further explored the relationship between the constructs of learning styles and mathematical understanding. The study revealed that students' learning styles can influence the students' mathematical understanding. Improving students' learning in a distance education environment rests mainly on improving the learning materials and the support systems. A carefully designed and well supported instructional distance learning package can facilitate learning. Implications of the findings point towards the improvement of the distance teaching processes through the improvement of learning materials and the learning support systems for the BSMS distance education programme.
