The translation of metaphors and similes in the three French versions of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird

Sullivan, Danielle 17 December 2018 (has links)
This thesis analyses the way in which Harper Lee’s metaphors and similes have been translated in the three French versions of To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the most famous novels in American literature. As a starting point, we examine the existing theories regarding Translation Studies and stylistic devices, which helps us to understand the purpose of metaphors and similes within a literary text. We then study those metaphors and similes that could not be translated with ease, mainly owing to their cultural significance. Paradoxically, cultural connotations and references play a significant role in Lee’s work, and they are indispensable in reconstructing her universe abroad. In order to translate the untranslatable, the translator has to resort to complex and diverse strategies, sometimes demonstrating a high level of creativity. An entire chapter is therefore devoted to inventive translations where the translator becomes a writer in his or her own right. Indeed we ask ourselves several questions about the role of a translator : should he remain passive or is he free to shape the target text as he desires? The final chapter focuses on the similarities between French and English, thanks to which a swift passage between the two languages is often possible. In each version, we notice methodological and stylistic trends that vary according to the publication date and/or the preferences of each translator. Given that there is no such thing as a perfect translation, we come to the conclusion that every new version contributes in its own way to the reader’s experience in the target language.

Plays of Tennessee Williams as opera: An analysis of the elements of Williams's dramatic style in Lee Hoiby's Summer and Smoke and André Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire.

Lee, Kenneth Oneal 12 1900 (has links)
There are two major, well-known operas based on plays of Tennessee Williams. He refused many times throughout his life to give permission for his play, A Streetcar Named Desire, to be set as an opera. It was not until the 1960s that he granted permission for Lee Hoiby to choose any of his plays as a basis for a new opera. Hoiby chose Summer and Smoke, a play which was written at approximately the same time as Streetcar. Lanford Wilson created the libretto for the opera which was given its premier in 1971 by the St. Paul Opera Association. In 1994 representatives of the Williams estate granted permission to the San Francisco Opera to commission an opera based on A Streetcar Named Desire. With a libretto by Philip Littell, the opera was composed by André Previn and given its premier in 1998. These two plays share common themes, character types, character relationships, and literary symbols due in part to the autobiographical nature of Williams's writings. The plays exhibit a cinematic nature and possess common dramatic elements such as the symbolic use of sets, props, and musical leitmotifs as a result of his attempts to create a new "plastic" style of theatre. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how each composer has captured the essence of Williams's dramatic style in these well known plays while dealing with stylistic elements that by nature could interfere in operatic composition. A brief biography of Williams is included to show the familial basis of his character types. Illustrations of his style serve as the basis for a comparison of the librettos to the plays. The musical analysis focuses on the composers' choices in dealing with Williams's poetic southern language, use of music, cinematic techniques, and complex characterizations.

Ross Lee Finney's 32 Piano Games and Stephen Chatman's Amusements: A Comparison of Two Pedagogical Approaches to Contemporary Musical Elements and Techniques

Kim, Sooyun (Pianist) 05 1900 (has links)
Piano instructors often have to work as a bridge connecting music from the past and the future. From a pedagogical viewpoint, contemporary works should be considered just as important as those in the standard repertoire. Yet, most piano instructors are skewed towards modern music and their teaching materials are focused on eighteenth and nineteenth century repertoire. It is essential for them to introduce various kinds of music from different periods and cultures in order to fully develop a student's musicianship. The purpose of this study is to compare two modern works that are designed mainly for pedagogical purposes: 32 Piano Games by Ross Lee Finney (1906-1997) and Amusements by Stephen Chatman (b. 1950). These compositions are intended for beginner and intermediate students and incorporate a number of contemporary elements and techniques. This study can help instructors and students understand how these elements are being used and the ways they have evolved over time. Most importantly, this dissertation can provide teachers with a distinct methodology that enables them to present modern pieces to beginning level students in a more approachable fashion, further providing theoretical and technical assets that will allow them to play advanced contemporary music in the future.

Ajuste y predicción de la mortalidad. Aplicación a Colombia

Díaz Rojo, Gisou 17 January 2022 (has links)
In this sense, life tables are a tool for understanding population dynamics through death probabilities, life expectancy and other indicators. Lee and Carter (1992) proposed a model whose adjustment allows analysts to obtain a dynamic view of the behavior of mortality during a period of analysis. This doctoral thesis seeks to contribute to the understanding of the changes experienced by the Colombian population in terms of mortality. To achieve this, four objectives were proposed. The first, to construct stochastic mortality models such as Lee-Carter for Colombian data and to make a comparative study of these models to evaluate their coherence based on the quality of the results obtained. The second is to calculate and analyze some mortality-related indicators such as infant mortality, life expectancy at birth, life expectancy at age 65, the Gini index at birth and the Gini index at age 65. The third is to apply control charts to identify moments in time and age intervals in which the observed probability of death is substantially different from the mortality pattern in the period studied. For this, the residuals of the selected models were monitored using Hotelling's T2 multivariate control chart to detect substantial changes in mortality that were not identified by the models. Fourth, to analyze the behavior of mortality for the departments of Colombia using multivariate analysis techniques such as principal component analysis, hierarchical clustering and fuzzy clustering, in order to subsequently identify groups of departments with similar behavior and characterize them by means of the mortality indicators studied. The methodology described in relation to the first three objectives was applied to data from the abbreviated life tables by sex for Colombia for the period 1973-2005, using the information available in The Latin America Human Mortality Database. For the analysis of mortality by department, new abbreviated life tables by sex were constructed with information from the departments for the period 1985-2014, adjusting to the information available for the departments of Colombia in terms of deaths and population. The methodology was implemented through the free statistical software R, which allows the replicability and reproducibility of the results. / Díaz Rojo, G. (2021). [en] FORBIDDEN FRUIT: THE MESSAGES OF SUPERSTAR RITA LEE / [pt] FRUTO PROIBIDO: OS RECADOS DA SUPERESTRELA RITA LEE

CHRISTIANA OLIVEIRA ALBUQUERQUE DE ARAUJO 11 June 2021 (has links)
[en] The singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and writer Rita Lee is one of the great voices of her time. In more than 50 years of career, he reached the mark of 55 million records sold and considered one of the most important artists in Brazil still alive. This dissertation analyzes his work and is centered on two narrative axes. The first part of the image that writer João Guimarães Rosa makes of the popular composer in the novel Recado do morro, in which the character Laudelim is the only one to understand and to explain the message of nature, composing a song and alerting his friend Pedro Orósio to who would be ambushed. In the 1960s, the popular song was on the rise as a space of communicational power. Based on this bias, we sought to analyze the messages existing in the work of Rita Lee. The songs of the Queen of rock would become an alternative narrative to the current hegemonic discourse, especially by the nonactivist feminism contained in her lyrics, since both the press and society, in general, in the 60s / 70s / 80s, built a misogynistic and limited image of the figure of feminist and of the woman herself as a gender. In the second axis of the dissertation, the study starts from the concept created by Silviano Santiago, who sees in Caetano Veloso a new paradigm of the pop star - one who is neither just a character, nor the common man, but the superstar. The study makes an adaptation of the concept and a comparison between the two artists, bringing up a figure of the superstar, a media figure formed by the combination of voice, body, performance and costumes, inseparable elements. In this chapter, an analysis of her costumes and performances is undertaken, concluding that Rita Lee built a work that produced a reorganization of the female image in the 20th century in Brazil.

The black eyes of Bruce Lee : From Normative to Descriptive & Prescriptive Multiculturalism

Khosravi Noori, Behzad January 2012 (has links)
Multiculturalism or cultural pluralism is a policy, ideal, or reality that emphasizes the unique characteristics of different cultures in the world, especially as they relate to one another in immigrant receiving nations. The word was first used in 1957 to describe Switzerland but first came into common currency in Canada in the late 1960s2. It quickly spread to other English- speaking and western developed countries.Although There is no clear link between the multiculturalism and the term that so called Balkanization, But this research tries to present the similar possibility of Multiculturalism discourse and Balkanization as a geopolitical term. In fact this research believes that   balkanization is The same idea of multiculturalism in practice, when it comes to the idea of state. On the other hand Vijay Parshad in his book Everybody was Kung Fu fighting  says that "I am interested in “how an investigation of kung fu can help us move from a limited multicultural framework into an antiracist, polycultural one.” This is the research and video that has been made about Bruce lee statue in Mostar, the divided city in Bosnia and Herzegovina", as a method of working in hyper- politicized society.

Unknown Date (has links)

Unknown Date (has links)

Montesinos Ruiz, Luis Felipe January 2014 (has links)
