Como referencial teórico foram utilizadas obras de Thorndike, como: The Principles of Teaching Based on Psychology (1905), The Thorndike Arithmetics (1917), The new methods in Arithmetic (1921) e The Psychology of Arithmetic (1922).

In this work we carry out a detailed study of the position of the Yang-Lee zeros of the one-dimensional Blume-Emery-Griffiths model through analytic and numerical methods. In particular, we analyze the effect of a dynamical lattice (connected and non-connected rings) over such zeros. Our numerical results and a saddle point caulculation indicate that such zeros tend to overlap the zeros of the model defined on one-ring (periodic boundary conditions) in the thermodynamic limit. We conjecture the existence of a region in the parameter space of the model where the zeros correspond to purely imaginary magnetic fields independently of the temperature. Here we show that, contrary to the previous results for the Blume-Capel model, there is no straightforward relationship between the energy minima and zeros position. For the connected ring we deduce the approximate equation for the Yang-Lee zeros curve from the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix. Our numerical and analytic results show that even with some antiferromagnetic couplings we have zeros at purely imaginary magnetic field. Finally, we calculate numerically the density of the zeros close to the edge of the curves (Yang-Lee edge singularity) obtaining, through numerical fits and finite size scaling relations, a density which diverges at the edge with critical exponent approximately -1/2 even when the magnetic field is not purely imaginary and the lattice is dynamic.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The present study followed part of the trajectory of the artist Rita Lee Jones in the period between 1967 to 1985. Relying on record sources, audiovisual documents, archive documents and discourses produced by the media, sought to document from the countercultural moment when she participated in the group Os Mutantes at the Tropicalia movement, until her moment of recognition of artistic maturity that occurs concurrent with the end of the authoritarian military regime in Brazil. The study retraces the path of her first experiences with the rock in his youth, investigating how her participation in the disks of Os Mutantes occurs, and the tensions of separation. Follows the trajectory of the reinstatement of her artistic career, and her work with other music groups or as a solo artist. The work also identifies aesthetic elements in her songs that help to understand the spread and expansion of the rock audience in Brazil, as well as various aspects of projection of her image in the conquest of the phonographic mainstream, to which Rita Lee Jones was raised in the mid-80s.

Disability in Lee Han's Social Integration Films

Han, Dasom 05 August 2021 (has links)
The thesis examines four films by Lee Han—Wandeugi (2011), Thread of Lies (2013), A Melody to Remember (2016) and Innocent Witness (2019)—that highlight disability problems in contemporary South Korea. While exposing the prejudice against and misunderstanding of people with disabilities embedded in society, these motion pictures promote social integration through development of trusted relationships and effective communication within familial structures. The representations of disability indicate that the cinematic images of exclusion can reinforce disabled characters' marginalized identity and promote inclusive efforts among the viewer at the same time. Through textual, cultural, theoretical analysis, it is argued that the films progressively decrease discriminative description of disability and gradually empower isolated individuals, making Innocent Witness an exemplary disability rights film.

Exploring Aspects of Korean Traditional Music in Young Jo Lee's Piano Honza Nori

Kim, Jin 08 1900 (has links)
Since the 1960s, several gifted Korean composers, including perhaps most notably Young Jo Lee (b. 1943), have been internationally acclaimed for their work. In Western countries, however, there has been a scarcity of academic studies examining the artistry of the music of these Korean composers. Nonetheless, as one of today's most recognized composers in Korea, Young Jo Lee has been invited to numerous international concerts, conferences, and festivals where his works have been played and discussed. A salient feature of his compositions is the fusion of Korean traditional music and the elements of Western compositions, such as in, for one distinctive example, his piano composition, Piano Honza Nori. This musical study describes and analyzes how Lee integrates Korean traditional elements with Western musical ideas in Piano Honza Nori. Results of this study will contribute to the limited literature on the analysis of contemporary piano composition that integrates Korean traditional elements.

Knights, Puritans, and Jesus: Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, and the archetypes of American masculinity

Strawbridge, Wilm K 30 April 2011 (has links) (PDF)
I interpret Civil War romanticism by looking at well-known archetypal characters such as the knight, the Puritan, and the Christ figure. I argue that sectional reunion occurred, in part, because Americans shared a common celebration of the Christian/chivalrous hero expressed through stories about the lives and personalities of leading figures of the Civil War. Western traditions like Christianity and its medieval warrior code, chivalry, conditioned Americans to seek heroes who conformed to a certain pattern that resembled the knightly ideal. Chivalry did not crowd-out other forms of masculine behavior, but during the nineteenth century, the British century, Americans had not yet created a man in their own image. That would come later with the twentieth century’s most favored man: the cowboy. Americans created Robert E. Lee as a knight figure resembling Western heroes such as King Arthur. Unlike the more controversial Confederate notables Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis, the Lee figure offered Americans the genteel, Christ-like, hero who could be made to represent all of white America. Davis was too defiantly unreconstructed to ever affect much sectional agreement, and Jackson simply could not be made to fit the chivalrous pattern. Thus, Lee allowed southerners to identify themselves as uniquely chivalrous and honorable compared to the modern North. At the same time, the Lee figure provided northerners the opportunity to romanticize a charming, orderly, Old South while rejecting the violent, narrow-minded, states' rights South best symbolized by Davis. I prefer to interpret commentary about the Civil War as storytelling and do not use terms such as the Lost Cause or Civil War memory. High-ranking officers, the common solider, and those who never participated in the Civil War each told stories about it. Due to the large number of stories told, certain common themes became evident in American interpretations of the Civil War era. Common stories include: Lee at Appomattox, Jackson's unmerciful marches against Union forces, and Davis (almost) eluding capture dressed as a woman. Taken together the sub-stories reveal much about the grand narrative of the Civil War, and how Americans, though succeeding to a great extent, failed to completely reunite.

Moral of the story? Religious dimensions of the secular and the sentimental in American literary education

Martin Fox, Kaitlyn 05 February 2024 (has links)
Over the last century, Americans have come to understand literature as a powerful tool for shaping individuals and society. Indeed, this perception of literature animates how Americans have and continue to debate what books to include—or exclude—in secondary school curricula. Texts dealing with issues of race, gender, and sexuality have proven especially controversial. This dissertation examines the claims people make about how reading literature can change readers and society through moral lessons. It offers case studies focused on three books that have been celebrated, banned, and taught in terms of their potential to inform readers’ moral and empathetic development: Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987). This dissertation shows how assumptions about literature’s ability to inform a readers’ moral and empathetic development can be better understood in relation to the tradition of sentimental literature—a genre and rhetorical mode of storytelling aimed to promote moral and social reform by evoking certain feelings in readers. The case studies illustrate instances when the didactic rhetorical models of sentimental literature appear as a mode of reading and interpretation, which I refer to as sentimental hermeneutics. Building on studies of religion, literature, and secularism, this dissertation analyzes the religious dimensions that emerge in the ostensibly secular interpretive methods and ‘universal’ moral frameworks used to teach and interpret these texts. Contemporary sentimental hermeneutics are indebted to an historical synthesis between Christian devotional reading practices and sentimental fiction in the 19th century. The novels examined are at various levels of conformity and dissonance with the rhetorical modes and religious foundations of this sentimental tradition. My study shows how the unacknowledged religious lineage of interpretive and moral frameworks commonly used to teach these books enacts certain religious, social, and ontological exclusions. Each case study outlines limits of sentimental hermeneutics and the analysis of Beloved offers an alternative framework for readerly empathy. By restoring to view the often-hidden religious histories of these reading strategies, this project pushes readers to parochialize the universalizing claims of these ostensibly secular moral messages: it calls for a form of reading that moves past the exclusions of sentimental hermeneutics.
