No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2055386 bytes, checksum: 54b255e3d880369a58d905d38a9ae31b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-02 / The increase in life expectancy registered in the last decades in Brazil was one of the most important achievements of society and brought new challenges in several areas of human knowledge. In order to know the future behavior of life expectancy, the goal of this work was to project the mortality of the Brazilian Semi-Arid from 2015 to 2050. The following methodological steps were performed: obtaining the correction factors of the deaths. Construction of complete Mortality Tables, assembling of databases with the age structure of annual mortality rates from 1980 to 2014, application of the Lee-Carter method for projection of mortality levels and patterns. This method combines a demographic model with a time series model. The projected life expectancies for the year 2050 for the Semi-arid States ranged from 78.25 to 83.82 years. It was concluded that the method produced plausible estimates of mortality levels and standards for most of the geographical areas of the Semi-Arid States, whose Mortality Tables produced may constitute important subsidies in the planning of health and welfare actions and in decision making for the populations of the Semiarid.

Art Criticism and the Gendering of Lee Bontecou's Art, ca. 1959 - 1964

Estrada-Berg, Victoria 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis identifies and analyzes gendering in the art writing devoted to Lee Bontecou's metal and canvas sculptures made from the 1959 - 1964. Through a careful reading of reviews and articles written about Bontecou's constructions, this thesis reconstructs the context of the art world in the United States at mid-century and investigates how cultural expectations regarding gender directed the reception of Bontecou's art, beginning in 1959 and continuing through mid-1960s. Incorporating a description of the contemporaneous cultural context with description of the constructions and an analysis of examples of primary writing, the thesis chronologically follows the evolution of a tendency in art writing to associate gender-specific motivation and interpretation to one recurring feature of Bontecou's works.

Tracing the impact of Stanislavski's system on Strasberg's method

Van Heerden, Emerentia Eletitia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDram (Drama))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This thesis explores the development of the Stanislavski system and the elements that influenced the growth of his theories and their impact on Strasberg’s work. In other words, the thesis has an explicitly historical orientation, and is not intended as a training manual for contemporary actors. It describes the many challenges Stanislavski faced in trying to change the conditions actors worked under and the quality of acting in the Russian theatre of his day. It discusses how certain theatre practitioners influenced him and the development of his system, which he saw as more of a helpful guide in moments of difficulty concerning the acting process and process of creation of a character. It further discusses Stanislavski’s relationship with Anton Chekhov, along with his learning experiences while working with actors at the Moscow Art Theatre. The thesis then discusses the impact of Stanislavski’s approach on Strasberg’s method. This includes tracing how Stanislavski’s system travelled to America and how it came to be introduced to Lee Strasberg. It then follows Strasberg’s learning experience at the American Laboratory and how he adapted and applied what he learnt there of the Stanislavski system into the Americanized version known as ‘The Method’ that he used while involved with The Group Theatre from the 1930s and later in The Actors Studio and his private classes from 1949 onwards. The thesis concludes with commentary on, and critiques of, Stanislavski’s system and Strasberg’s method from students who studied under them, fellow actors and their fellow theatre practitioners and contemporaries.

Conceptions of Taiwanese identity : Lee Teng-hui and the understanding Taiwan textbooks

Tran, Euhwa 28 October 2010 (has links)
Authoritarian governments have long wielded education as political tools by which to transmit their conceptions of nationalistic identity, but does the same hold true of democratic governments? Transitioning from martial law to full democracy in the 1980s and 1990s, Taiwan serves as an ideal case study. As authoritarian rulers, Chiang Kai-shek and his Kuomintang (KMT) imposed education curriculum that legitimized their claims to be the rulers of all China. After martial law was lifted in 1987, dissenters could freely vocalize a Taiwanese identity that advocated for a sovereign Taiwan separate from the Chinese nation. Contemporaneously, Lee Teng-hui rose to power as a loyal KMT member, but as president he shifted away from Chinese identity to promote a sense of Taiwanese identity. Preceded by nationalistically Chinese KMT stalwarts and succeeded by one who pushed Taiwan even closer to independence, Lee was a transitional leader whose own ideological evolution reflected Taiwan’s shift from a staunchly Chinese political entity to a possibly independent state separate from the mainland. During Lee’s presidency, controversy erupted over the content of textbooks for a junior high course entitled Understanding Taiwan [renshi taiwan] that focused for the first time on Taiwan in its own right instead of as only one small part of China. The textbooks instigated a debate on identity, for how one regarded the accuracy or appropriateness of the textbooks reflected one’s views of Taiwan in relation to China. The debates and the textbooks’ contents revealed clearly that despite the considerable democratization occurring in Taiwan over the decade, curriculum content continued to mirror the convictions espoused by the central government—led by the democratically elected president Lee Teng-hui (1988-2000)—in much the same way that it had done so under the authoritarian rule of Chiang Kai-shek (1949-1975). / text

Classification of perfect codes and minimal distances in the Lee metric

Ahmed, Naveed, Ahmed, Waqas January 2010 (has links)
<p>Perfect codes and minimal distance of a code have great importance in the study of theoryof codes. The perfect codes are classified generally and in particular for the Lee metric. However, there are very few perfect codes in the Lee metric. The Lee metric hasnice properties because of its definition over the ring of integers residue modulo q. It isconjectured that there are no perfect codes in this metric for q > 3, where q is a primenumber. The minimal distance comes into play when it comes to detection and correction oferror patterns in a code. A few bounds on the number of codewords and minimal distanceof a code are discussed. Some examples for the codes are constructed and their minimaldistance is calculated. The bounds are illustrated with the help of the results obtained.</p>

Projekce úmrtnosti podle příčin úmrtí / Mortality projections by cause

Štádlerová, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the mortality projections by causes of death. The thesis includes also the application of such knowledge on the data of the Czech population. The mortality projections are used nowadays more and more often due to the population ageing. The results of this thesis may be interesting both for financial institutions such as insurance companies and for the purposes of certain areas of government policy with regards to the pension planning. So far not many articles have been published in the Czech language, nor are there any published results of similar projections using the data derived from the Czech environment. Implementing ecologically-inspired landscape design retrofits within exurban neighborhoods

Leyva, Alfonso Santiago January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Lee R. Skabelund / Since the mid-1960s a paradigm shift in environmental values has been initiated in Europe, parts of the United States, and many other parts of the world, culminating in a focus on green infrastructure based development (Ahern et al., 2007b). During the 1980s and 1990s sustainability and landscape ecology began to be important aspects of landscape architecture education and practice (Swaffield, 2002; Ahern, 2005). The effort to create sustainable cities, neighborhoods, and sites is making a difference in urban areas, which is very important since global census data shows that a majority of the earth’s population now lives in urban settlements (United Nations, 2014). Personal and cultural values reveal an environmental consciousness and strong interest in sustainability in many communities (Peiser & Hamilton, 2012). Nevertheless, many developments associated with landscape construction seem to implement few, if any, sustainable practices as new neighborhoods in many parts of the U.S. are developed. This study develops a modified ecological approach and applies this outlook to an existing exurban neighborhood in Manhattan, Kansas. Quantitative and qualitative research includes: 1) a review of relevant literature and precedent studies; 2) a multi-tiered site analysis informed by landscape ecology principles; and 3) surveys of local homeowners regarding landscape maintenance practices and their willingness to install more ecologically appropriate landscapes. It is anticipated that sustainable design considerations for Lee Mill Heights and nearby areas will emerge to inform future neighborhood retrofits, helping move existing subdivisions towards more ecologically appropriate patterns and processes.

Baskets, Staircases and Sutured Khovanov Homology

Banfield, Ian Matthew January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Julia E. Grigsby / We use the Birman-Ko-Lee presentation of the braid group to show that all closures of strongly quasipositive braids whose normal form contains a positive power of the dual Garside element δ are fibered. We classify links which admit such a braid representative in geometric terms as boundaries of plumbings of positive Hopf bands to a disk. Rudolph constructed fibered strongly quasipositive links as closures of positive words on certain generating sets of Bₙ and we prove that Rudolph’s condition is equivalent to ours. We compute the sutured Khovanov homology groups of positive braid closures in homological degrees i = 0,1 as sl₂(ℂ)-modules. Given a condition on the sutured Khovanov homology of strongly quasipositive braids, we show that the sutured Khovanov homology of the closure of strongly quasipositive braids whose normal form contains a positive power of the dual Garside element agrees with that of positive braid closures in homological degrees i ≤ 1 and show this holds for the class of such braids on three strands. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston College. Erotismo. Arte brasileira. Série das Ligas. Happening.
