Contemporary British poetry and the Objectivists

Stone, Alison Jane January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines a neglected transatlantic link between three post-war British poets – Charles Tomlinson, Gael Turnbull and Andrew Crozier – and a group of Depression-era modernists: the Objectivists. This study seeks to answer why it was the Objectivists specifically, rather than other modernists, that were selected by these three British poets as important exemplars. This is achieved through a combination of close readings – both of the Americans’ and Britons’ poetry and prose – and references to previously unpublished correspondence and manuscripts. The analysis proceeds via a consideration of how the Objectivists’ principles presented a challenge to dominant constructs of ‘authority’ and ‘value’ in post-war Britain, and the poetic is figured in this sense as a way-of-being as much as a discernible formal mode. The research concentrates on key Objectivist ideas (“Perception,” “Conviction,” “Objectification”), revealing the deep ethical concerns underpinning this collaboration, as well as hitherto unacknowledged political resonances in the context of its application to British poetries. Discussions of language-use build on recent critical perspectives that have made a case for the ‘re-forming’ potential of certain modernist poetries, particularly arguments about ‘paratactic’ versus ‘fragmentary’ modernisms, and as such the three British poets’ interest in the Objectivists is interpreted as a response to a need for restitution following the trauma of World War II. Ultimately, it is argued that this interaction (which this thesis figures in explicitly transatlantic terms) was a challenge to the emphasis placed on collective and normative viewpoints in much post-war British poetry, many of which were located in an organic conception of ‘nation.’ This study claims that the Objectivists’ example posited a contrasting poetic, foregrounding individual agency and capacity for thought as the only viable means for the poet to re-connect with and make meaningful statements about society and the world.

In the Shadow of the Spectacle: Security and Policing Legacies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics

Molnar, Adam 02 May 2014 (has links)
International sporting events such as the Olympics and FIFA World Cup can affect entire economies, democratic regimes, juridical structures, urban architectures, organizational capacities, and political communities. Whether positively or negatively, undertaking a major sporting event such as the Olympics or FIFA World Cup represents a distinct opportunity for the host-city to embark on the largest ever domestic logistical project ever undertaken within the countries’ borders, which can lead to considerable degrees of short-, medium-, and long-term impacts on a vast array of groups and organizations spanning the public-private divide. Accordingly, the International Olympic Committee has seized on the discourse of legacy to promote and expand the social and political value of infrastructural projects associated with the Games. Over the same period that legacy became a mainstream discourse in the Olympic industry; investment in security, surveillance, and policing infrastructure to protect major sports events simultaneously grew to approximately 20-50% of all expenditures associated with the hosting of an Olympic event. As the discourse of legacy gained currency with Olympic developments, any discourse of security legacies has remained woefully disregarded. Early studies that acknowledge the prevalence of security legacies at major events have focused on event-to-event cases, or have otherwise listed security legacy variables in the absence of any theoretical framework that explains how security governance legacies emerge and endure after the major event has ended. This dissertation presents a robust theoretical framework to address the security governance legacies flowing from the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Through empirical case-studies, it details how such investments in security, surveillance, and policing infrastructure often become institutionalized as security governance assemblages that persist after the major event has ended. In particular, the chapters address legacies of redeployable public video surveillance, public-order policing, civilian-military integration, and the legacies of the private security industry. The security governance legacies of the 2010 Games involves significant changes within security, intelligence, and policing assemblages in Vancouver, and Canada as a whole. The dissertation concludes with a discussion on how security governance assemblages from the Vancouver 2010 Olympics might further inform notions of function-creep in the surveillance studies literature. / Graduate / 0615 / 0627

Atratividade turística em estádios de futebol: visitação no estádio Arena Corinthians / Tourist attraction in soccer stadiums: visitation in Arena Corinthians stadium

Romano, Fillipe Soares 15 October 2018 (has links)
Apontam-se recomendações para ações que abranjam o público do entorno na perspectiva de apropriação, pertencimento e uso do estádio, além de aproximação ao trade turístico para alcançar a meta de ser o principal atrativo turístico na cidade de São Paulo / With the announcement of the construction the Arena Corinthians stadium in the district of Itaquera in São Paulo, inquired about the possible legacies and impacts for the population as a counterpart to hosting the sports megaevents. The present research emerged from the questioning: how the transformations demanded by the mega-sports events 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics can influence the forms of use and appropriation of Arena Corinthians as a segment of tourism and leisure at the city of São Paulo? The overall aim was to analyze the importance of tourism activities at the stadium and, the specific objectives were focused on: to explore the activities that make use of the facilities; examine perception of the social actors of the environment under the perspective of the legacy and/or attraction for the region of Itaquera and the east zone of São Paulo; identify and reflect on the possibilities and potentialities of the use of space. In order to answer the previous questions, a choice of use of the qualitative method of descriptive and exploratory character was made, splited into three distinct moments: bibliographic and documentary analysis and field research, comprised by the participant observation technique, thematic interview, and made by the use of questionnaires to Arena Corinthians and São Paulo Turismo (SpTuris) managers, one hundred visitors from the Casa do Povo Tour, Timão RUN, Monster Jam and Football Open Training, and five visitors from Virada Cultural. As a result of the research, noticed that visitors were unaware of the tourist route at the east zone of São Paulo, some of them were at the stadium for the first time, in this sense, it stands out the importance of attracting the public through multicultural and diversified events that are not related to Sport Club Corinthians Paulista (SCCP). Visitors understand the Arena Corinthians as a legacy and tourist attraction for the city. The perception of the residents corroborates under perception of the tourist attractiveness, nonetheless, they differ especially in the matter of legacy, justified by the generated expectation and not fulfilled in the development of the surroundings. It also pointed out some recommendations for actions in order to cover the surrounding public in the perspective of appropriation, belonging and use of the stadium, as well as approaching the tourist trade to achieve the goals of being the main tourist attraction in the city of São Paulo

Megaeventos esportivos e políticas públicas: Jogos Pan-Americanos 2007 e suas relações com a Copa do Mundo de Futebol de 2014 e os Jogos Olímpicos de 2016 / Sports mega-events and public policies: Pan American Games 2007 and its relations with 2014 FIFA Word Cup and 2016 Olympic Games

Rodrigo Barbosa Terra 10 August 2015 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation was to investigate how the proposals for the legacies presented by Brazilian organizers of sports mega-events Pan American Games 2007, FIFA World Cup 2014 and Olympic Games - Rio 2016 meet the interests of public policies. The objectives of this research were: a) to identify actions of good practices linked to possible legacies of three recent sports mega-events: the FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa, the South American Games/2010 Medellin / Colombia and the Olympic Games/2012 London/England; b) to verify how the relationship between the Federal Government and the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) was devised in order to define the necessary actions for the events related to the legacies of the 2007 Pan American Games; c) to identify the relationship between the Federal Government and the private institutions CBF (the Brazilian Confederation of Soccer) and COB - both of them responsible for the organization of the FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016; d) to identify and verify how close the possible legacies left (or to be left) by the mentioned events are from those found in the Rio 2007 Pan American Games. Methodological procedures were taken in four stages: a) bibliographical review about the topic; b) analysis of documents related to the investigated events; c) seven semi structured interviews, recorded, transcribed and categorized; d) categorization and analysis of documents and interviews based on the proposed objectives. Results demonstrated that the good practices linked to the possible legacies of the referred sports mega-events in recent history are tangible for the 2010 and 2012 Games and intangible for the FIFA World Cup 2010. In terms of the relationship between the Federal Government and COB, based on the legacies of the 2007 Pan-American Games, data demonstrate that the process was based on weak planning, which caused an inadequate model of management, which resulted in the late agreement on the responsibility matrix. In relation to the development of legacies of the sports mega-events of 2014 and 2016, it was observed that the image of Brazil as a great country seems to be the main legacy to be left. Finally, it is important to mention that the response to the central question of this study is that the proposals for the legacies of the 2007 Pan-American Games did not meet the interests of public policies. As for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, the proposals for the legacies are directed to actions which, if well executed, might directly or indirectly meet interests of public policies.

How the Winter Olympics Enrich Community Legacies for Recreational Open Space: A Case Study of Selected European and American Olympic Sites

Brown, Jennifer A. 01 May 2003 (has links)
The Olympics have been a catalyst through the last century for community alteration including both the renovation of existing areas and building of new sites. This study focuses on the post-Olympic use of active and passive recreational open space infrastructure developed by Winter Olympic host cities. This study examines four Winter Olympics. The observation of a variety of Olympic venues has provided an opportunity to compare the differences in planning due to historical, cultural, and social variables. The comparison of these Olympic sites contributes to understanding of the probability of success or failure of post game expectations for recreational open space use. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Winter Olympics on the recreational open space infrastructure of host communities. Future Olympic sites can utilize these experiences as part of a planning effort to create a successful community recreational open space legacy.
