Tesis para optar al grado de Magíster en Lingüística mención Lengua Inglesa. / Para poder describir las características y explicar la motivación del presente estudio, es necesario hacer referencia al contexto académico específico en que se ha originado. Como parte de mi quehacer profesional, he sido participante del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de inglés con propósitos específicos implementado para los estudiantes de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad Diego Portales. Hasta el presente, el programa curricular de esta carrera profesional ha sido implementado hasta el cuarto año de estudios. Luego del primer año, se incorporó en el plan general de estudios un curso de inglés cuyo objetivo central es el desarrollo de la habilidad de lectura de artículos de investigación médica de reciente publicación. En una etapa inicial, se constituyó como objetivo central del curso la lectura de artículos de investigación médica publicados en la revista de divulgación científica Scientific American. En general, los temas presentados en esta publicación provienen de las ciencias básicas, particularmente biología, química, física y matemáticas. En una segunda etapa, luego de observar y considerar la evaluación y resultados obtenidos en el curso de inglés por los estudiantes, los académicos encargados de la implementación del programa de estudios replantearon los fines prácticos inmediatos que debería cumplir un curso de inglés para los estudiantes de medicina de dicha universidad.

If, as might seem evident to any reader who is familiar with the literature, there truly does exist a real difference between the traditional translations of the Bible, often labeled as formal equivalence, and the modern translations of the Bible, commonly known as functional equivalence, then there should be some objective way to study these two families of translations and verify that there truly is a distinction, as well as describe and define those practices which differentiate the two. This study creates a vertical arrangement of ten different major English translations, comparing their formal features with those of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. The data of this comparison are then represented through numerical scores and then analyzed in further detail. The results of this comparative analysis yield facts which can lead to broad conclusions concerning the treatment of the form of the original in traditional and modern English translations of the Bible.

Las Islas Canarias (España) siempre han mantenido un estrecho contactocon el mundo anglosajón, lo que ha generado importantes consecuencias económicas, así como también socioculturales, lingüísticas y literarias. Un análisis de la bibliografía inglesa sobre Canarias revela, entre otros aspectos, la tendencia al uso de hispanismos y canarismos. Este trabajo ofrece el registro de esas voces que aparecen en un corpus de catorce obras tomadas de la extensa bibliografía anglocanaria. Tras revisar brevemente la relevancia del hispanismo inglés, nuestra recopilación intenta resaltar la contribución del español de Canarias al enriquecimiento del vocabulario de la lengua inglesa, constatando cuáles de los hispanismos de nuestro corpus que son canarismos han pasado al registro lexicográfico realizado por elShorter Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles (2007).AbstractThe Canary Islands (Spain) have always been in close contact with the Anglo-Saxon world, which has had important consequences for the economy but also at the socio-cultural, linguistic and literary levels. A review of the English bibliography on the Canaries reveals, among other aspects, a tendency in most authors to use hispanicisms and canarianisms in their texts. This article offers a record of those words which appear in a corpus of fourteen works taken from this extensive bibliography. Apart from providing an overview of the studies on hispanicisms in English, this paper’s main aim is to highlight the contribution of Canarian Spanish to the enrichment of the vocabulary of English by checking which of the hispanicisms in our corpus, which are actually canarianisms, have been included in the lexical repertoire of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionaryon Historical Principles (2007).
