Understanding Integration in Emergent Reading

Davis, Bronwen 07 January 2013 (has links)
A predictable alphabet book was proposed as a natural way to observe emergent readers’ attempts to integrate their developing literacy skills and knowledge base, despite not yet having achieved conventional levels of reading. Study 1 examined how accuracy in identifying words in an alphabet book in kindergarten related with emergent skills measured in kindergarten and with subsequent reading ability. One hundred and three children completed tests of phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, vocabulary, and rapid naming in kindergarten and were audiotaped reading an alphabet book with their parent. Reading ability was assessed one year later. Correlations were consistent with previous research identifying phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, vocabulary and rapid naming as significant correlates of emergent reading. Alphabet book accuracy correlated with subsequent reading, and the relative indirect effects of kindergarten phonemic awareness and letter sound knowledge on Grade 1 reading through kindergarten alphabet book reading were significant. Findings supported the conceptualization of how well a child identifies words in an alphabet book as a representation of early skill integration. Study 2 built upon these findings by examining self-reported reading strategies. Siegler’s (1996) overlapping waves model was used as a framework, which emphasizes variability, adaptive choice, and gradual change in children’s problem solving. Ninety-one kindergarteners completed tests of phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, and vocabulary, and read an experimentally designed alphabet book having pages of varying difficulty with a researcher twice over several months. Findings supported the three main features of the overlapping waves model. Children reported a variety of strategies across the book and on individual pages within it. They worked most quickly on the easiest pages, reported more strategies on the most difficult pages, and chose adaptively among their strategy repertoire. The number of strategies reported and the number of accurately labeled pages increased over time. The relative indirect effects of phonemic awareness and letter sound knowledge on alphabet book accuracy through the use of graphophonemic strategies were significant. Findings support the application of the overlapping waves model to the domain of reading. Overall, these studies highlight the potential for using typical literacy activities to deepen our understanding of the process of learning to read.

Rakotonanahary, Salohy Miadana 09 1900 (has links)
The international trade does not cease developing with the evolution of information technology nowadays. The documentary credit, which is an instrument of payment of the price of commercial services between an exporting salesman and an importing purchaser, is part of the field touched by the electronic evolution. This is why the international Chamber of Commerce of Paris recently adopted the Guide on the computerized letter of credit (eRUU), supplement to the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credit (RUU 500). The letter of credit must be based on a great confidence and an enormous safety. Thus, the fraud harms the principle of the autonomy of the letter of credit and destroyes the need for safety which it generates. The divergences relative to certain criteria of the fraud and the delimitation of the obligations of the bank in the checking of the documents on paper medium are complex enough for the international tradesmen and the banks. And even if the dematerialization of the documents tends to decrease the fraud on the matter, the dematerialized credit on security would be still far from being carried out without difficulties, with the direct emergence of the thirds in the operation. Its exhaustive analysis must then continue on the doctrinal level. The delimitation of the duty of the bank in the search for this electronic fraud, and in the payment of the electronic documents would become as debatable as that in the traditional documentary credit. The banks would have to be somewhat sensitized on the need for making certain provisions as soon as possible, to allow companies' customers to carry out presentations or electronic receptions of the documents of the letter of credit in conformity with the eUCP.

The Relationship Between 6/9 Distance Vision, Otitis Media with Effusion and Emergent Letter Name Knowledge

Casey, Maria Paula January 2013 (has links)
Background: There is a need for more well-controlled research on the relationship between vision and hearing limitations and emergent literacy to inform early literacy intervention. Two highly prevalent difficulties of early childhood, poor distance visual acuity and otitis media with effusion (OME), have been shown to be associated with literacy achievement. There is little research, however, on the relationship between these conditions and emergent literacy. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the relationships between (1) distance visual acuity and emergent letter name knowledge, and (2) OME status and emergent letter name knowledge in children at school entry. Method: A prospective cohort of children (N=298) was recruited at school entry. Participants were aged 5, did not require special education for high needs and spoke a nationally recognized language of New Zealand. Distance vision and tympanometry testing was performed and a parent report of OME was obtained. The Wechsler Individual Test of Letter Name Knowledge and the Vocabulary and Block Design sub-tests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children were administered. Covariates of reading achievement were also measured. Results: Twenty three percent of children knew fewer than 4 letters at school entry, 31.9% had marginal distance visual acuity of 6/9 in one or both eyes and 37.2% had a history of ear infections and/or a B tympanometry test at school entry. Logistic regression tests demonstrated that both 6/9 vision (OR= 2.069, CI0.95=0.999-4.227) and OME status 10 (OR=1.846, CI0.95=1.034-3.297) were significantly associated with low letter name knowledge at school entry, controlling for covariates of emergent literacy. Another analysis showed that children with 6/9 vision and/or OME at school entry were also at greater risk for low letter knowledge (OR=2.187, CI0.95=1.067 – 4.484) than children with 6/6 vision and no OME at school entry. Conclusions: The results of the current study indicate that 6/9 distance vision and OME are risk factors for low letter name knowledge at school entry. These factors warrant greater consideration with regard to early literacy intervention, classroom teaching practices and future research.

Sources of social integration in sorority women who live in residence halls

Salisbury, Molly 03 May 2014 (has links)
College students find belonging at institutions in multiple ways. For college women, the relationships they form through their involvements are important in their social integration. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the social integration experiences of sorority women who live in residence halls. This study was grounded in qualitative, phenomenological methodology. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with sorority women living in the residence halls who were at least sophomores. The researcher found sorority women had positive experiences of community and enriched relationship opportunities through their involvement in their sororities and residence halls. The women studied referenced the few relationships they made with the other people who lived near them in the residence hall. While these relationships were important to them, they were not as important as the relationships formed with their sisters in their sorority. Sisterhood provides a deeper, more meaningful connection shared through the bond of ritual and tradition. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research were also suggested. / Department of Educational Studies

Automatic line segmentation in late medieval Latin manuscripts

Renet, Nicolas P. 21 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis describes a new line segmentation method that is optimized for medieval manuscripts. Using a thinned version of the binarized document image, the segmentation algorithm extracts two types of salient features from the handwritten patterns: nodes, whose distribution allows for the detection of line axes; segments, which are labeled according to the nodes they connect. This method obtains very good results on manuscripts that are usually considered hard to segment because of the numerous overlapping and touching lines. By contrast with many existing segmentation algorithms, this method does not rely on user-entered parameters and is not overly sensitive to the quality of the preprocessing treatments. Although more work is required to make it resistant to fluctuating lines, this line separation technique can already handle a large set of medieval documents and provides a useful input to a character segmentation program. / Line segmentation techniques in off-line handwriting recognition -- Line segmentation with the profile method -- Feature-based line segmentation -- Tests and conclusions. / Department of Computer Science

Ficcionalizar el referente : violencia, saber, ficcion y utopía en El Primer Nueva Corónica y Buen Gobierno de Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala / Ficcionalizar el referente : violence, knowledge, fiction and utopia in El Primer Nueva Corónica y Buen Gobierno of Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala

Matienzo León, Ena Mercedes January 2013 (has links)
The dissertation "Ficcionalizar el referente. Violencia, Saber, Ficcion y Utopía en El Primer Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno de Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala" aims to explain violence, knowledge, fiction and utopia in El Primer Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno. This study begins with the history of the reception of the El Primer Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno in the twentieth century. The main criterion in making this record was to analyze outstanding studies on Peruvian chronic and have opened new meanings from different disciplines. The history of the reception of the El Primer Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno starts from a "ensayo de intrepretación" from archeology to arrive at the philological science covered by the strengthening of cultural studies and questioning the "metarrelatos" in the last three decades of the twentieth century developed an "acto de descolonización" from the historical and literary criticism. The concepts of violence, knowledge, fiction and utopia have been constant throughout the process of reading and reflection of Peruvian chronic. Thus, this study answers questions about the dimensions and spaces of violence in Peruvian chronic. This study also recognizes that the stories of the end of the Andean world and its reorganization correspond to the confluence of knowledge and its "ubicidad". El Primer Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno hat scenes of the "experiencia límite" that can have a tragic "desenlace" with the disappearance and death of the author or the abandonment and loss of hope for his ideals. However chronicle Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala concludes with a commitment to life and therefore part of "saber de vida" or "saber vivir" because the record is about life and knowledge that has life as a central objective in the historical narrative. Therefore the chronic Peruvian contains a narrative logic that "undermines the static of an irrevocable destiny" and prepares a report of the bleak world with the desire to change it. This scene produces friction between the claims of the writer and the fictional representation of the design, thus is a space between experience and invented that would cover a whole field of experimentation ranging from full diction and fictional formula. The dissertation "Ficcionalizar el referente. Violencia, Saber, Ficcion y Utopía en El Primer Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno de Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala" identified an "eclosiva fuga de la referencialidad textual" of Peruvian chronic to create their own "referencialidades" under a utopia. The dramatic testimony, the complaint in voice and image will not be alienated from himself and legendary fantasy element of the early Latin American writings. The narrative artifices of the El Primer Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno creates "territorialidades textuales aptas para la imaginación y la leyenda, cercano a lo real maravilloso". The Indian chronicle was conceived when organizing the "Buen Gobierno y Justicia" in a confrontational environment, but also in a world that was new, rising at a time when America appeared as idealization of the Republic of Plato, a good government, a utopia.

Downtime reduction analysis of the Australia Post flat mail optical character reader

Fox, James P. January 2007 (has links)
Machine downtime, whether planned or unplanned, is intuitively costly to manufacturing organisations, but is often very difficult to quantify. The available literature showed that costing processes are rarely undertaken within manufacturing organisations. Where cost analyses have been undertaken, they generally have only valued a small proportion of the affected costs, leading to an overly conservative estimate. This thesis aimed to develop a cost of downtime model, with particular emphasis on the application of the model to Australia Post’s Flat Mail Optical Character Reader (FMOCR). The costing analysis determined a cost of downtime of $5,700,000 per annum, or an average cost of $138 per operational hour. The second section of this work focused on the use of the cost of downtime to objectively determine areas of opportunity for cost reduction on the FMOCR. This was the first time within Post that maintenance costs were considered along side of downtime for determining machine performance. Because of this, the results of the analysis revealed areas which have historically not been targeted for cost reduction. Further exploratory work was undertaken on the Flats Lift Module (FLM) and Auto Induction Station (AIS) Deceleration Belts through the comparison of the results against two additional FMOCR analysis programs. This research has demonstrated the development of a methodical and quantifiable cost of downtime for the FMOCR. This has been the first time that Post has endeavoured to examine the cost of downtime. It is also one of the very few methodologies for valuing downtime costs that has been proposed in literature. The work undertaken has also demonstrated how the cost of downtime can be incorporated into machine performance analysis with specific application to identifying high costs modules. The outcome of this report has both been the methodology for costing downtime, as well as a list of areas for cost reduction. In doing so, this thesis has outlined the two key deliverables presented at the outset of the research.
