Ferreira, Edilene da Silva January 2019 (has links)
Abstract: The literary discourse is a universe permeated by several other discourses that make it a productive space for the study of the lexicon in its varied characteristics and in the understanding of different linguistic phenomena. Considering these aspects, the aim of this research is to register and analyze the vocabulary of four literary works: Fatos, cultos e lendas do Acre (1964) and Capiongo (1968), by José Inácio Filho, O empate (1993) e Direito e avesso (1998), by Florentina Esteves, in order to select and record representative lexias of the speech of the man of the state of Acre. The theoretical framework is based on the concepts of Lexicology (BIDERMAN, 1998, 2001; TURAZZA, 2005), Lexiculture (GALISSON, 1987, 1988, 1989; BARBOSA, 2005, 2008/2009) and Discourse Analysis (PÊCHEUX, 1969, 1975, 1990). For the selection of lexias, the concepts of Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004) and the AntConc software (ANTHONY, 2014) provided the necessary support for corpus processing. As corpus of exclusion, we used the Corpus Brasileiro made available by Berber Sardinha, and three lexicographic works: Dicionário Aurélio (FERREIRA, 2009), Dicionário Houaiss da Língua Portuguesa (HOUAISS and VILLAR, 2009) in their electronic versions, and Dicionário Aulete, available online. The work Termos e tradições populares do Acre (INÁCIO FILHO, 1969) also contributed with lexicographical data that allowed the analysis of 75 lexias that are not registered in general dictionaries, which, even with a single frequency, stand out for the expressiveness and representativeness. Three aspects were observed: the analysis of the lexical aspects, the shared cultural load (CCP, in Portuguese) and the effects of sense, presented in specific discursive formations. From the regularities identified, it was possible to demonstrate that the lexias can be organized in three categories: those that ... / Doutor

Italian Internet Terminology: A Corpus Based Approach to Banalised Language

Schrobilgen, Wendy Marie 05 December 2012 (has links)
The present study offers strong evidence that the World Wide Web is a unique domain of use that can be categorized as a banalised context based on certain defining criteria. Italian Internet Terminology is worthy of investigation because of its unprecedented extent and rich context of use. The goal of chapter one is to make a case for the utility of a corpus-based study, explain the primary theoretical underpinnings of the study, which I base on the concept of central meaning linked to the compositionality of elements, and give important historical and sociological motivations for such a study . In chapter two, I explain how term are selected and discarded, how my corpus is created, and how it proves suitable and representative of this lexical domain. In the third chapter, I elucidate the classificatory system I employ which allows me to view the lexical items in grammatical context. To gain a better understanding of the conceptual system of the terms studied, I introduce another important analytical framework: qualia structures. In chapter four, the analysis of the morphosyntactic and semantic character of the terminology allows for greater insight into the processes and pattering of denomination of Internet terminology. To conclude this study, I show that Italian Internet terminology is a banalised language governed by a systematic set of morpho-syntactic rules in which Italian selects, uses, and lexicalizes terms based on core units of meaning.

Landman, Kie-Mari, Kwatsha, Linda Loretta, Otto, PR January 2016 (has links)
The researcher’s decision to study the labelling of lexical items in dictionaries was prompted by the frustration experienced with subjective labelling in Afrikaans and English dictionaries. Some lexicographers rely too much on their subjective judgement when it comes to labelling lexical items. The problem with this is that the different dictionaries often label the same word differently or that words in the same dictionary which should get the same label are labelled differently. The question arose as to what exactly constitutes the correct handling of labels, especially with regard to Xhosa dictionaries. The search for an answer to achieve this aim dictated the necessity to examine the essence of the concept “label” in order to establish criteria for evaluating the effective usage of labels, because as Harteveld (1993:143) stated: “…the incorrect treatment of labels or the lack thereof can have important implications for a dictionary”. Since the hypothesis of this study is that it is possible to use labels objectively and correctly it is therefore possible to establish criteria that can be used to achieve this end. A literature review was undertaken to identify criteria for the handling of labels. Fieldwork with the aid of a questionnaire was conducted to supplement the establishment of such criteria. A number of criteria for handling labels was determined. Each criterion was discussed and its implementation was practically demonstrated by means of exemplars.

A study of the sources and development of the lexicon of Sierra Leone Krio

Hancock, Ian Francis January 1971 (has links)
This thesis traces the origins and development of Sierra Leone Krio vocabulary, based upon the writer's own study and manuscript dictionary of that language, and on work with informants for most of the donor languages dealt with. Part I deals with European-African contacts from the 15th to the 19th century, and with creolization as a linguistic process developing from this contact. Various theories of creolization are discussed, and the hypothesis advanced that Krio did not pass through a pidgin stage as is generally maintained, but became nativized during the first generation of speakers, and pidginized later. This chapter is followed by a discussion of the sociolinguistic aspects of Krio, and a description of Krio phonology. Part II examines European material in Krio, the most important of which sources being English. The special role of the nautical varieties of the language in the 16th-19th centuries is emphasized. Regional and Archaic British forms which are still retained in Krio are also discussed. Parts III and IV deal with the African-derived items in Krio; from these chapters it is apparent that out of the complex multilingual situation of 19th century Freetown, comparatively few African languages have had any far-reaching impact upon Krio, and then usually only in specialized areas of the lexicon. Part Y is concerned with items derived from Arabic, all of which have entered Krio via one or more other West African languages. The majority of these items occur in a solely Islamic context. Part VI covers other aspects of Krio vocabulary: items coined within Krio itself, having no apparent cognates outside the language, compounded forms traceable to two (or more) different source languages, 'convergence' forms with two or more equally likely etymologies, English-derived items calqued on African models, items obsolete in modern Krio but recorded in 19th century literature, and items for which no satisfactory etymologies have yet been found. Part VII (appendices) comprises the acknowledgements and list of informants, and the bibliography, including several references for Sierra Leone Krio not consulted in the preparation of this thesis. The final section is an alphabetical word-index to all the items discussed, (ca. 3,000).

DescriÃÃo e anÃlise dos culturemas do portuguÃs brasileiro

Michelle GirÃo Pinheiro 00 February 2018 (has links)
This research aims to investigate the Brazilian Portuguese (BP) culturemes. We collected these cultural components in Brazilian scientific papers with the intention of inventorying them according to the theoretical orientation of Luque Nadal (2009) and Pamies BertrÃn (2008). According to Pamies Bertran (2007), culturemes are culturally motivated extralinguistic symbols, which are the basis for the different languages to generate new phraseological units. The survey of these extralinguistic symbols of BP will show us, besides a significant part of the cultural mirror of Brazil through the lexicon, the terminological fluctuation of the category exploited in our work. The description and categorization of these elements will therefore present the linguistic reflex of the phenomenon. Based on the theoretical bases of Lexiculture and Phraseology, we also intend to problematize the theoretical and methodological implications of this alliance. If the historical and cultural baggage of a society is inserted into the language by means of various phenomena, such as culturemes and phraseologisms, resulting in the impossibility of thinking the language disaggregated from these principles, then it is not boldness to defend this necessary relation, given the role played by culturemes, that is, to act as a vehicle for the transmission of culture of a people, and satisfactorily fulfill the function of enabling a transit between the two languages: mother tongue and foreign language. In addition, learning a foreign language contributes significantly to the development of communicative competence - the main objective of classes within a communicative approach. The relevance of our reflection is imposed insofar as it is admittedly sustainable that knowledge of a language goes beyond the domain of grammatical rules and lexical knowledge; in the last instance, the knowledge of cultural aspects, among which is the linguistic one
