Forma y función de los edificios de bibliotecas universitarias: herramientas para su evaluación

Se define un modelo conceptual de edificio de biblioteca universitaria actual fruto del cambio de paradigma, con proyección en la siguiente década. El modelo es usado para establecer comparaciones, posibilitando la creación de una herramienta para la evaluación de los edificios bibliotecarios. El modelo se establece por el estudio de la relación entre la estética y la practicidad de los espacios bibliotecarios; el conocimiento de la evaluación histórica de la tipología arquitectónica; la resolución de la incógnita sobre la necesidad de mantener bibliotecas físicas y presenciales en un entorno tendente a la biblioteca ‘sin paredes’; la recolección de las tendencias en el diseño; y la valoración de la adaptación a las necesidades académicas actuales y futuras de los edificios de bibliotecas universitarias existentes.

A user-centered usability and usefulness evaluation framework of digital libraries in the context of Ethiopia

The outcome contributes knowledge by helping to propel development efforts; satisfy DL stakeholders; provide information and fill information gaps; serve as cross-reference for academicians and researchers in the discipline; make decisions and solve managerial issues in DLs of the developing world; and provide scientific interests and merits for the advancement of information systems. When undertaking usability and usefulness evaluation research in DLs, there is no agreed-upon established conceptual framework that guides researchers in the developing world. Therefore, the overall objective of this research is to propose a framework for DL evaluation that fits into the context of developing countries. As the study is concerned with users’ internal attributes, the interpretive research paradigm is applied. A qualitative research approach is employed and a case study research design is followed. Multiple data-collection techniques, namely semi-structured interviews (17 respondents), open-ended questionnaires (17 respondents) and observations (4 observations) are employed. The study encompasses four public university DLs in Ethiopia. The participants have a positive perception of all attributes of usability. Most of the attributes of usefulness are also perceived positively, except coverage. The major challenges encountered by participants are network accessibility, interruption and speed, and access restrictions imposed on some DL content. DL benefits include easy access to the DL content, enhanced teaching and research, lower cost and easy sharing of contents. The expectations of users are ensuring resource availability and sustainability, overcoming the absence of user feedback and federated search problems, and improving network infrastructure and speed. The interaction triptych framework (ITF), which is used in the current study, is a well-known framework that is commonly implemented by researchers. However, since it does not incorporate the contextual situation of developing countries, ITF has some limitations. Therefore, based on the output of this empirical research and considering the usability and usefulness themes of ITF and its relationships with other socio-technical and contextual themes, a contextual DL evaluation framework is proposed. The proposed framework emphasises the social, institutional and contextual aspects of DLs. The proposed framework has six DL components, namely: DL user; content and collection; system and technology; services and support; user interface; and context. Die voorgestelde raamwerk het ses digitalebiblioteekkomponente, naamlik: digitalebiblioteekgebruiker; inhoud en insameling; stelsel en tegnologie; dienste en ondersteuning; gebruikerkoppelvlak; en konteks. Understanding Teacher Users of a Digital Library Service: A Clustering Approach

This research examined teachers' online behaviors while using a digital library service--the Instructional Architect (IA)--through three consecutive studies. In the first two studies, a statistical model called latent class analysis (LCA) was applied to cluster different groups of IA teachers according to their diverse online behaviors. The third study further examined relationships between teachers' demographic characteristics and their usage patterns. Several user clusters emerged from the LCA results of Study I. These clusters were named isolated islanders, lukewarm teachers, goal-oriented brokerswindow shoppers, key brokers, beneficiaries, classroom practitioners, and dedicated sticky users. In Study II, a cleaning process was applied to the clusters discovered in Study I to further refine distinct user groups. Results revealed three clusters, key brokers, insular classroom practitioners, and ineffective islanders. In Study III, the integration of teacher demographic profiles with clustering results revealed that teaching experience and technology knowledge affected teachers' effectiveness in using the IA. The implication, contributions, and limitation of this research are discussed.

Here is, also, a brief trajectory of the evaluation of higher education in Brazil, showed under the context of the neo-liberal politics. As internal scenery, it is observable the ways of articulation of the universitarian library of the private instance with the dimensions of physical structure and pedagogical activities. It is intended to establish lines of connection between the instrument of SINAES and the effectiveness of the library in the evaluative process determined by INEP/MEC. Before this reality, the analysis focused on the understanding of INEP evaluators, the managers of private institutions and the librarians. The used methodology is based on fieldwork and the data was analyzed under the perspective of the Discourse Analysis of the Collective Subject, which is based on the opinion of the actors involved in the role of the library in the institutional panorama. The achievements point the universitarian library at a fragile position in the private colleges, having disparity between the featured concepts for this unity of information. It concludes also that the subjectivity, by the part of the evaluators, is constant in the libraries‟ processes of evaluation. Also can be said that the understanding of what is evaluated is not uniform and the insertion of this unity of information in the processes of teaching-learning is still incipient. / O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o processo de avaliação das bibliotecas universitárias de Fortaleza realizado pelo INEP/MEC no contexto das políticas públicas para educação. Faz uma breve trajetória das políticas públicas e mostra o ensino superior brasileiro no contexto das políticas neoliberais. Como cenário interno observou-se o modo como se articula a biblioteca universitária do setor privado com as instituições nas dimensões de estrutura física e atividades pedagógicas. Procura estabelecer linhas de conexão entre o instrumento do SINAES e a efetividade da biblioteca no processo avaliativo determinado pelo INEP/MEC. Diante dessa realidade buscou-se analisar as bibliotecas a partir do entendimento dos avaliadores do INEP, dos dirigentes de instituições privadas e dos bibliotecários. A metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa de campo e os dados foram analisados sob a perspectiva da a Análise do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo, que se baseia na opinião dos atores envolvidos com a pesquisa. Os resultados obtidos apontam que a biblioteca universitária ainda está em posição bastante frágil nas instituições de ensino superior privadas, havendo grande disparidade entre os conceitos apresentados para essa unidade de informação. Concluiu-se também que está presente no processo de avaliação das bibliotecas grande subjetividade por parte dos avaliadores. Pode-se afirmar, ainda, que o entendimento do que é avaliado nas bibliotecas não é uniforme e que a inserção dessa unidade de informação nos processos de ensino-aprendizagem é incipiente.

應用品質機能展開發展使用者導向之圖書館館藏評鑑系統 / Applying Quality Function Deployment to Develop Library Collection Evaluation System based on User Needs

館藏評鑑是圖書館館藏發展中重要的一環,圖書館透過館藏評鑑了解館藏的現況優劣,包括內容品質、使用情形、使用者的需求差異等層面,作為修正採訪策略或讀者服務的參考。然而基於人力、成本等因素,館藏評鑑常成為圖書館的負擔,對於資源不足的中小型、基層圖書館而言,更是艱難的工作,所以尋求一套相對簡易的方法,以節省人力物力的方式進行館藏的評估,是有其需求的。 因此,本研究嘗試以「品質機能展開(Quality function deployment,QFD)」為基礎,發展一套半自動化的「使用需求導向館藏評鑑系統」,希望以系統化和新的不同評鑑模式來輔助館藏評鑑。本系統所應用之資料來源為使用者問卷調查以及圖書館自動化系統的各種紀錄,透過品質機能展開,以量化的方法將兩者做矩陣式的對應和計算並求得結果,作為輔助館藏評鑑時的參考。 本研究以台北市木柵高工圖書館為對象,研究方法及流程依次為:問卷調查、系統實作分析、訪談。首先以問卷調查法訪問學校圖書館使用者,取得使用者之需求;再將這些需求的數值輸入系統中,與圖書館自動化系統的紀錄合併進行品質機能展開計算;最後,將系統運算分析出來的結果,用訪談的方式訪問木柵高工圖書館員,檢視本系統之有效性與館員對本系統之看法。 研究之發現有以下幾點:1.應用品質機能展開所開發之系統,確實可應用於館藏評鑑,但較適合觀察長期趨勢;2. 不同使用者族群對圖書館館藏重視之層面可能有差異,此差異在本系統中會對結果造成影響,影響幅度由需求差異大小決定;3.無法量化計算的質性使用者需求,仍然受到使用者重視,在館藏評鑑中亦相當重要;4.本研究所開發之系統,有助於資源不足之基層圖書館館藏評鑑作業的推動。 / Library collection evaluation is one of important part of collection development, to understand the goodness or weakness of collection. It includes quality of content, analyzing of use, user needs, etc. But because of lake of staff and funds, collection evaluation becomes a burden to many libraries. To small libraries, it is more difficult. So it is necessary to develop a simple method to save the cost and labors for libraries. This study applies the Quality Function Deployment to develop a half-automatic library collection evaluation system, hoping to help collection evaluation works in a systematic, efficient way. The system in this study uses two kinds of data for computing: questionnaire survey of user needs and library automation system records. By applying the Quality Function Deployment, the system can combine above data and records, and generate analysis of collection and user needs in graphics. Finally, it can help decision making according to this information. This study takes Taipei Muzha vocational high school as the object, the method and procedures would be: questionnaire survey, system developing and analyzing, interview with librarians. The study obtains following conclusions: 1.Applying QFD, this system can help collection evaluation in practical, but it is more suitable to observe long-term trends than short-term; 2. Different group of users concern different needs in using library collections, those differences will affect the result of this collection evaluation system; 3. Some user needs can not be quantitated for system progressing, part of those needs are important in users’ opinions, so in a practical collection evaluation work, libraries can not ignore them; 4. This collection evaluation system can help some small-scale, basic-level, insufficient-resource libraries to accomplish their collection evaluation work.
