Self-directed Learning Readiness Among Undergraduate Students at Saudi Electronic University in Saudi Arabia

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of self-directed learning readiness among undergraduate students at Saudi Electronic University in Saudi Arabia. This study also investigated whether there were relationships between the level of self-directed learning readiness and selected demographic variables such as gender, college, and age in the sample of undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia. This research utilized a quantitative design. The Self-directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS), which was developed by Guglielmino, was utilized to measure the level of self-directed learning readiness among undergraduate students at Saudi Electronic University on the Riyadh campus. A total of 203 undergraduate students completed the SDLRS questionnaire. Results were that the mean score of SDLRS among undergraduate students at Saudi Electronic University in Riyadh campus included 64 (32.52%) were students with below average 58-201 scores; 71 (34.98%) students with average 202-226 scores; and 68 (33.50%) were students with above average 227-290 scores. age. However, there was a significant difference between the colleges. The results of the Tukey post-hoc test indicated that significant differences existed between the Sciences and Theoretical Studies College students and the Administration and Finance College and Computation and Information College students. The Sciences and Theoretical Studies College scored significantly lower than the other two colleges.

Pokyčiai ekonomikoje ir darbo rinkoje sąlygojo politines ir mokslines diskusijas apie mokymąsi visą gyvenimą bei besimokančios visuomenės poreikius: rinkos ekonomika reikalauja nuolat atnaujinti turimus, bei įgyti naujus įgūdžius, žinias ir gebėjimus. Augantis tarptautinis bendradarbiavimas ir konkurencija įtakojo naują požiūrį į mokymąsi visą gyvenimą, apimantį tiek naujų kompetencijų įgijimą, tiek anksčiau įgytų tobulinimą. Švietimo reformų pasekoje, plėtojant žinių visuomenę, atsiranda vis daugiau galimybių bei iniciatyvos mokytis ir dalyvauti kaitos procesuose. Švietimo politikai akcentuoja būtinybę kelti mokymo kokybę, kuriai didžiulę įtaką turi pedagogų kvalifikacija, reikalaujanti nuolatinio tobulinimo ir atnaujinimo. Ilgainiui mokytojų vaidmuo pakito: jų pedagoginė veikla tapo labiau kompleksinė, reikalaujanti priimti savarankiškus sprendimus, todėl mokytojai skatinami nuolat tobulintis ir aktyviai dalyvauti mokyklos tobulinimo procese. Svarbu pabrėžti, kad žinios, įgūdžiai ir gebėjimai nėra įgyjami visam laikui, - jie turi būti nuolat atnaujinami visos mokytojo karjeros laikotarpiu. Dalyvavimą mokymosi visą gyvenimą procesuose sąlygoja tam tikri veiksniai, į kuriuos, kaip į mokymosi kontekstą, svarbu atsižvelgti, apibūdinant mokytojų nuolatinio mokymosi pasiekimų vertinimo bei pripažinimo specifiką. People aim at improvement of their professional qualification, acquiring more knowledge and experience. This favourably capacitates change and rising social status of the individuals. Hence, it is very important to emphasize the role of constant studying in the dynamic contemporary society. Occupation and activity are the important process of personal self-realisation. Professional education and training have significant effect upon occupation and social integration. Thus, it is necessary to draw attention to the factors and motives influencing upon the process of constant studying. Profession of a teacher is specific as it does not limit itself entirely to the capabilities of the teacher. The overall psychological structure: activeness, single-mindedness of activity, sources of abilities and way of activity – is also important there. The leadership experience of first line nurse managers working in the Cook Islands: a qualitative descriptive study

A qualitative descriptive approach was undertaken to explore the leadership experience of seven first line nurse managers working in the Cook Islands. For the purposes of this study first line nurse managers are those nurses working as a charge nurse in a hospital, nursing supervisors, chief public health nurse, and nurses working autonomously in the outer islands of the Cook Islands. Nurses in these roles are in key positions to influence the practice of others and set the standard of practice and culture of a unit. The participants were recruited if they were currently employed in any of these positions. The seven participants were all Cook Islands women who received their undergraduate nursing education in the Cook Islands. The purpose of the study was to describe their leadership experience, to raise an awareness of their role, and to make recommendations to support and improve the preparation of nurses for leadership roles in the Cook Islands. Through face-to-face interviews, the participants' stories were audio taped and transcribed verbatim. Six of the seven transcripts required translation from Cook Islands Maori to English and this was conducted by the researcher who is fluent in both languages. Content and thematic analysis of the data revealed a spiritual, emotive and intuitive theme in the participants' leadership experience. The findings of the study revealed the self confidence of these nurses to manage in this role despite being challenged by management issues and the lack of preparedness for the role. The supportive network established within their staff, their family and the people around them has provided the impetus to continue to 'serve' their people. The findings also revealed that these nurses recognised the need to continue to learn and develop themselves and their staff. The findings of this study have significance for nurses aspiring to be nurse leaders in the Cook Islands or other Pacific Islands and rural communities. A key stakeholder in this study is the Cook Islands Ministry of Health, as insights and awareness gained can contribute to an appropriate preparation and support programme for nurses working in its organisation.

Continuing Professional Education in Athletic Training: Is Knowledge Acquired and Retained?

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess certified athletic trainers' knowledge acquisition, knowledge retention, and satisfaction, following a continuing professional education (CPE) program offered in either a traditional, lecture-oriented format or an interactive format addressing adult learning strategy preferences. Design: We used a pre-test, post-test experimental design with comparison groups utilizing stratified randomization. Setting: The CPE program was held in the University wellness center classrooms. Subjects: Forty-six certified athletic trainers participated. Measurements: After determination of learning strategy preferences, a 30 item multiple-choice exam was administered prior to, immediately after, and one-month following the CPE program to determine level of knowledge acquisition and retention. Participant self-reported level of satisfaction was assessed with a questionnaire immediately following the CPE program. Results: A significant main effect for treatment (F2,70 = 6.02, p < 0.004) was observed indicating that subjects in the lecture format CPE program acquired and retained more knowledge than subjects in the interactive format regardless of learning strategy preference. There was no significant loss in knowledge observed one-month following the CPE program regardless of learning strategy preference or treatment (lecture or interactive CPE format). No significant differences in level of satisfaction by treatment (lecture or interactive CPE format) or by learning strategy preference (navigators, problem-solvers, or navigators) were noted; however, 13 (28.3%) reported an excellent level of satisfaction (mean satisfaction score of 4.0) and 31 (67.4%) reported an above average level of satisfaction (mean satisfaction scores of 3.0 to 3.88). Conclusions: Our data indicate that lecture format CPE programs may be optimal for knowledge acquisition and retention, independent of learning strategy preference. Knowledge retention did not decrease regardless of learning strategy preference or CPE format and actually demonstrated a further increase using the lecture format. Although our data suggest that participant satisfaction is independent of learning strategy preference and CPE format, the homogeneity of responses made it difficult to detect any relationship with regard to learning style preference and satisfaction.

Museum Personalized : The impact of floor staff on an exhibition - A holistic approach

The current paper presents a study conducted at The National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm to investigate the exhibition “Antarctica – that’s cool” from its first concept to the first workshop that is held in the exhibition. The focus is on the influence of floor staff on an exhibition and workshops as learning facilities in museums. Findings, based on visitor observation and the exhibition building process, go into the characteristics of low-budget productions and discuss the importance of staff on the exhibition floor for museums as life-long learning facilities. The holistic approach of the study provides deep insights into the complex interplay of visitors, staff and exhibitions. The results can be used for future exhibition building processes and educational programs in museums and should strengthen the museum’s position as life-long learning facility in nowadays society.

La presente tesis se enmarca dentro del proyecto europeo Equal Igualdader 2005-2005, (AD 1002) El objetivo principal de esta investigación es lo de Capacitar a las mujeres mayores de la Comarca del Montsià en el uso de las TICs, como herramienta de empoderamiento en relación a la percepción de si mismas y para la recuperación de su memoria histórica.El resultado de un primer analisi estadisticos sobre la condiciones de las mujeres de la comarca del Montsiá, ha puesto de relieve la necesidad de promover acciones específicas hacia las mujeres mayores de edad. Y entre sus necesidades especificas se ha relevado un importante nivel de analfabetismo digital. A través de la realización de una serie de talleres sobre habilidades básicas informáticas, se ha procurado romper las barrera existente entre este colectivo y las maquinas y de este modo acrecer su propia autoestima. A través del aprendizaje en el uso de las TICS, ha sido posible además llevar a cabo el recupero de la memoria historia femenina local. / This research realized for the present work is part of the European project Equal Igualdader 2005-2005 (AD 1002). The main objective of this research is the empowerment of Montsià's elderly women trough ICT. In that context the new technology of information and communication become a tool both to raise women self-perception and to drive hers to the recovery of personal and collective historical memory. The initial statistical analysis on the conditions of Montsiá's women highlighted the needing of developing specifics action for elderly women. For example have been detected a significant level of digital illiteracy. We sought to break down elderly women technological barrier and enhance hers self-esteem through basic computer skills workshops. The recovery of women's local historical memory have also been carried out in the workshop process.

Life-long learning for knowledge societies becomes fundamental for educational process. Motivation, expectations and contentment of people take a very important place in today’s learning. The most important objectives of today’s educational process are providing answers to current challenges and essential questions as well as helping to seize new opportunities for society and individuals. The objective of this research is to explore the motivation, motives and problems of life-long learning of residents in Visaginas town. The tasks of the research are following: • to explore residents’point of view towards life-long learning; • define the motives of adults which force them to start studying again; • analyze what conditions residents of Visaginas have; • define issues which impede more active involvement of adults into life-long learning; • provide with recommendations on how to nurture residents’point of view on life-long learning. The analysis was done in November, 2005 and took place in Visaginas National Language Center, in “Draugystes” secondary school (adult classes) as well as in other public institutions. During this research the residents of Visaginas town were asked to answer a question on how they perceive and value life-long learning and what is their point of view towards it. Globalization, information explosion, rapid changes, society decomposition are the challenges of the 21st century: they raise new requirements for a person, society and the education system. Today a teacher should be flexible, permanently interested in teaching innovations, constantly learning, researching his/her activity. The purpose of the final Master’s work is investigating motivation, learning motives and problems of the Utena region educators during their life – long learning. The research has been done in January, 2005. 245 educators of various education institutions of Utena Region (i.e. of primary, basic, secondary, vocational and higher education) have participated in the research. In the empiric research it has been stated that 94 % of the educators consider life- long learning as necessary; last year 87 % of the respondents were studying. The research shows that educators’ abilities in their specialty have been greatly improved (97%) after the graduation from the formal education institutions; and the social competencies have also improved (86%). Motives of the educators concerning learning are mostly internal: the wish not to lag behind, to be socially active. External motives are as follows: to be employed the hope to get a higher salary, the wish to be retrained.
