Psychosocial factors and susceptibility to the common cold in distance runnersStruwig, Gillian Anne 30 November 2004 (has links)
This study investigated the relationship between specific psychosocial factors and susceptibility to the common cold in a sample of 124 distance runners. A cross-sectional survey design was used to assess the role of life events, coping, hardiness, training workload and competition frequency in the athlete's risk of infection. Using correlational statistical techniques, it was found that the magnitude of recent life changes and the avoidance coping strategy of denial were positively related to self-reported symptoms of the common cold. Furthermore, a significant inverse correlation was observed between hardiness and symptom duration scores. However, approach coping, training workload and competition frequency were not significantly related to the dependent measures. The results of this study suggest that certain stress-related psychosocial factors are associated with susceptibility to the common cold in distance runners. Several strategies for the prevention and treatment of upper respiratory tract infections in this group are implied by these findings. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Personal well-being is a state that involves feelings and thoughts. This concept is investigated in learning area Life Orientation and integrated in the curriculum as a learning outcome for Further Education and Training learners in grades 10-12. A literature study was done to discuss/clarify dimensions of personal well-being that is general subjective, psychological, social and spiritual well-being and mental health. Perspectives, theories, principles and features pertaining to well-being were investigated from an international and local context. An exploratory study used a qualitative approach to investigate and observe perceptions of a small sample of learners of personal well-being. Data gathering used focus groups which completed structured group work activities. The results indicate that learner participants have needs to be satisfied to reach a sense of personal well-being. Text in Afrikaans / This pastoral-narrative study pans the stories of multi disabled children's parents for story elements and account resources that lead to the development of alternative realities on the dominant reality of "disability". With a postmodern epistemology and postmodern theological background this study was performed with a qualitative narrative research approach.
In this study the stories of eight multi "disabled children's parents are utilized. Story elements and account resources from social structures and existence are highlighted and discussed. Examples of this are family, circle of friends, hope and parental love.
The account of this study underlines the value that alternative realities on the dominant reality of "disability" can add to the quality on how people experience life. It also services as prove of people's riches of inner power and resilience. / Practical Theology / M.Th.

Fulfilling these challenging and sometimes demanding roles can contribute to role overload and conflict, which can have a negative impact on organisational effectiveness, as well as the overall wellbeing
of the working mother. This dissertation outlines the relationship between personality dimensions, sense of coherence and the coping styles of working mothers from a salutogenic perspective.
The Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ), Orientations to Life Questionnaire (OLQ) and the Coping Orientations to the Problems Experienced
(COPE) Questionnaire were used to measure the relationship between personality dimensions, sense of coherence and the coping styles of working mothers. The study was conducted with 102 working mothers representing different ethnic groups and occupational levels in different occupational fields and organisations.

The present study explored the effect of the birth of a child with a cleft lip and palate on family
functioning within the context of family systems theory. Five families, each with a child who was
born with a cleft lip and palate, were included in the study. The five couples were all married
and they were the biological parents of their children whose ages ranged from two months to
five years. All five sets of parents were initially interviewed together and then had separate
individual interviews where the Family Assessment Measure-III was administered. The results
reflected each family's distinctive patterns of interaction and how they adapted to the birth of a
child with an orofacial cleft. Factors found to affect family functioning included: External support
systems, individual coping skills, family rules and boundaries, open communication and

The effects of cognitive stimulation in the development of mathematics, Literacy and life-skills concepts in early childhoodStretch, Lauren 30 November 2009 (has links)
This study was conducted in order to assess the effects of cognitive stimulation in early
childhood. The quantitative study set out to test a target group of 40 children, ranging in age
from two years to three and a half years, in order to determine the importance of stimulation
and intervention from a young age. A pre-test evaluated the initial level of each child‟s
cognitive abilities (mathematics, literacy and life skills). This was followed by a random
selection of the subjects into experimental and control groups.
The experimental group underwent an eight-week intervention programme which focused on
the primary concepts in each area of cognitive development. The control and experimental
groups continued with their normal school learning programmes.
The results indicate that the impact of stimulation on young children is significant and there
is a great difference in the abilities and understanding of concepts for those children which

HIV/AIDS knowledge of secondary school learners in Sefhare, BotswanaAdenuga, Babafunso Aderemi 11 1900 (has links)
Quantitative, descriptive research, using self-completion questionnaires, was conducted to determine the level of HIV/AIDS knowledge of the learners in Sefhare. The sample, comprising 92 learners, was selected from forms 1-3.
Of the learners, 53.4% knew what HIV/AIDS stand for, but only 13.6% said AIDS is caused by HIV and only 4.5% said AIDS is an incurable disease. The ABC of protecting oneself against HIV (abstain from sex, be faithful to one sex partner, use condoms) was mentioned by merely 57.6% of the learners.
The learners’ lack of knowledge should be addressed by school HIV/AIDS programmes offered at schools in Botswana. As 81.5% of the learners were willing to be tested for HIV, this service should be made available with simultaneous confidential personal HIV/AIDS education, irrespective of the HIV test results. Teachers’ and parents’ HIV/AIDS knowledge should also be updated regularly. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

Summary in English and Afrikaans / This study focus on a Gestalt guidance programme in order to utilize smartiewerk as projection technique in life skills with children The strategy used in the research was case studies. An in depth literature review guided the study‟s theoretical background. A specific focus on the gestalt therapeutic process and gestalt play therapy as such was given to the study. Further literature reviews on the child and life skills was done.
In the completion of this study the researcher made use of case studies. The sample existed of non-probability sampling with criteria for inclusion focusing on the child with emotional distress and some form of loss without coping skills as such. The researcher conducted between seven and eight sessions with the three children. In all three case studies it was evident that smartiewerk as projective technique had value in dealing with life skills. / Hierdie studie is onderneem om „n Gestalt begeleidingsprogram te ontwikkel waarbinne smartiewerk™ as projeksietegniek in lewensvaardighede met kinders benut kan word. Evaluating the impact of the principles of the National curriculum statement on grade 10 Life OrientationSkosana, Petrus Sizani 11 1900 (has links)
Effective implementation of the principles of the National curriculum Statement (NCS) for Life Orientation has various requirements. Thus, with a specific focus on Life Orientation in grade 10, the study aimed at investigating various issues around the implementation of these principles. To this end, a mixed-methods approach was used. In the quantitative phase, questionnaires were used. In the qualitative phase, focus groups and interviews were used to collect data. Similar questions were asked in both phases. The sample was a group of 48 Life Orientation teachers from 48 secondary schools in the Gauteng West district. Ethical issues were considered. Techniques to ensure validity and reliability were also taken into account.
The results showed that, in general:
• the introduction of the NCS in Life Orientation had resulted in too much paperwork and administration for the teachers;
• the principles of the NCS had not helped to transform education from the apartheid era system of education to the present democratic system of education;
• the teachers were poorly trained with regard to implementing the principles of the NCS in the sense that there were not enough workshops and follow-up support provided;
• the principles of the NCS were not implemented at schools, among others because there were problems with the distribution of policies to the teachers via the school management;
• the implementation of the principles of the NCS did not make the envisaged impact on learner attitudes since the attitudes of many learners were often negative;
• the implementation of the principles of the NCS did not make the envisaged impact on learner respect for other cultures;
• the principles of the NCS did not have the ideal impact on morals, values and standards; or impact significantly on crime rate, learner pregnancy or disrespect at school; and• the principles of the NCS did not support learners well to acquire life skills.
• However, the principles of the NCS in Life Orientation were more successful with regards to helping address barriers to learning.

Life Orientation, a core subject of the South African secondary school curriculum since 1996, is still not taught successfully in the majority of secondary schools. This study was conducted in former Model C secondary schools in the Nelson Mandela Metropole in order to identify challenges and problems with regard to the management of the teaching of the subject. If the subject were managed properly by principals the Departmental outcomes would have been achieved and problems would not have existed.
In this study the managerial challenges of the teaching of Life Orientation have been identified by means of mixed method research, in terms of the four main management tasks, namely leading, planning, organising and controlling. The views of principals were obtained through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews.
