High resolution scattering measurements for stationary particles

Daniel, Tamar Lynn 21 November 2017 (has links)
Particle characterization is important to the aerospace field because particle ingestion in propulsion engines can lead to catastrophic failures. It has been shown laser based methodologies can determine size and concentration of spherical particles by using light extinction. However, when one moves to increasingly complex shapes one must take into consideration not only light extinction but multi angle light scattering. Cylindrical particles scatter light in a way that can be quantified by electromagnetic wave theory. This scattering distribution is directly related to the cylinders diameter and material properties, as well as the wavelength of the incident light. This project designed and implemented a rig that measures the scattering distribution of single static cylindrical particles. It was shown that the scattering distribution for cylinders can be measured and compared to computational expected values, especially in the forward scattering region. Future work in measuring the scattering distribution of increasingly complex geometries and in flow conditions is proposed. / Master of Engineering

A Diagnostic Technique for Particle Characterization Using Laser Light Extinction

Barboza, Kris Leo 04 May 2015 (has links)
Increased operations of aircraft, both commercial and military, in hostile desert environments have increased risks of micro-sized particle ingestion into engines. The probability of increased sand and dust ingestion results in increased life cycle costs, in addition to increased potential for performance loss. Thus, abilities to accurately characterize inlet sand would be useful for engine diagnostics and prognostic evaluation. Previous characterization studies were based on particle measurements performed a posteriori. Thus, there exists a need for in situ quantification of ingested particles. The work presented in this thesis describes initial developments of a line-of-sight optical technique to characterize ingested particles at concentrations similar to those experienced by aircraft in brownout conditions using light extinction with the end goal of producing an onboard aircraft diagnostic sensor. By measuring the extinct light intensity in presence of particles over range of concentrations, a relationship between diameters, concentration and light extinction was used for characterization. The particle size distribution was assumed log-normal and size range of interest 1-10 μm. To validate the technique, particle characterization in both static and flow based tests were performed on polystyrene latex spheres of sizes 1.32 μm, 3.9 μm, 5.1 μm, and 7 μm in mono-disperse and poly-disperse mixtures. Results from the static experiments were obtained with a maximum relative error of 11%. Concentrations from the static experiments were obtained with a maximum relative error of 18%. Mono-dispersed and poly-dispersed particle samples were sized in a flow setup, with a maximum relative error of 12% and 10% respectively across all diameter samples tested. Uncertainty in measurements were quantified, with results indicating a maximum error of 17% in diameters due to sources of variability and showed that shorter wavelength lasers provide lower errors in concentration measurements, compared to longer wavelengths. For real time, on-board measurements, where path lengths traveled by light are much larger than distances traveled in initial proof of concept experimental setups, requirements would be to install sensitive detectors and powerful lasers to prevent operation near noise floors of detectors. Vibration effects from the engine can be mitigated by using larger area collection optics to ensure that the transmitted light falls on active detector areas. Results shown in this thesis point towards validity of the light extinction technique to provide real time characterization of ingested particles, and will serve as an impetus to carry out further research using this technique to characterize particles entering aircraft engine inlets. / Master of Science

Estudo experimental da produção de fuligem em chamas laminares

Soares, Diego January 2016 (has links)
Serious environmental problems are assigned to incomplete combustion processes. Among the unwanted products, soot can be related as an important factor of climate changes observed in the last years. Thus, particulate material emissions diagnostic tools are necessary. Due the laser advent, the development of non-intrusive optical techniques was possible. One of the most importante technique is the laser induced incandescence, LII, which can generate spatially and temporally resolved results of soot volume fraction. In this context, an experimental study regarding the soot production was developed in two different situations: in the first one, premixed laminar flames of ethylene and air were investigated by applying the LII technique. The results were calibrated through the average of soot volume fraction results obtained by the light extinction technique. Therefore, it was possible to obtain quantitative results of spatially resolved soot volume fraction. Different gases employment at the annular flow were also evaluated. The second situation studied involves the analysis of natural gas laminar non-premixed flames. The impact of different inert gas dilution ratio on the soot volume fraction at different heights of the flame was evaluated by the LII technique. The results were compared to other authors and will serve as validation for future soot formation models.

Development and applications of the Light Extinction Spectroscopy technique for characterizing small particles

Horvath, Imre Tamas 20 October 2015 (has links)
The purpose of the present research is to develop and apply an experi- mental technique for measuring the size of nanoparticles and nanodroplets in a flow environment. The developed non-intrusive, optical method is called Light Extinction Spectroscopy (LES) and it allows to determine the size of particles from measuring their light transmission spectrum on the Ultraviolet-Near-Infrared range. The most crucial part of the develop- ment work is to obtain a reliable data processing method, which is based on the regularized solution of an ill-conditioned inverse problem. The de- veloped method is first tested using synthetic data, which allows to deter- mine the measurement range and also the measurement errors caused by various sources. This is followed by performing laboratory experiments for validating the LES technique. Validation measurements using calibrated particles and a reference instrument shows that sizing errors are in the order of 5-10%. Afterwards, the technique is applied for characterizing the Brownian coagulation process of nanodroplets, where the growth rate of droplets is successfully measured and is found to agree with theoreti- cal expectations. Next, the LES technique is applied to coagulating solid particles, where the growth rate of these complex non-spherical objects is retrieved. Finally, a particle monolayer is deposited on an air-water inter- face and it is shown that the LES technique can retrieve the particle-water contact angle, which allows the characterization of nanoparticle wettabil- ity and the study of the related interesting physical phenomena. / Doctorat en Sciences de l'ingénieur et technologie / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Investigation Of Light Attenuation In Lake Eymir

Atiker, Selen 01 January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT INVESTIGATION OF LIGHT ATTENUATION IN LAKE EYMIR Selen ATIKER M.Sc, Department of Environmental Engineering Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayseg&uuml / l Aksoy Co-Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selim Sanin January 2012, 164 pages. Light penetration and attenuation has significant impact on the water quality of lakes. Algal activity, which is important for the levels of several water quality parameters, is dependent on light penetration besides availability of nutrients. In this study, change in light penetration and attenuation in Lake Eymir was studied. The relationships of extinction coefficient (ke), and water quality parameters were investigated. The effect of ke on Chl-a over nutrients were investigated. The water quality parameters measured were / total suspended solid (TSS), phosphate, ammonium, nitrate, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Secchi disk depth and lake Depth. The measurements were conducted at five different stations in Lake Eymir. Secchi disk, PAR and lake depth measurements were done on site, while TSS, Chl-a and phosphate analyses were done in laboratory, using standard methods. Nitrate and ammonium analyses were conducted through laboratory kits. Linear and non-linear regression models of ke and Chl-a were developed to understand their relationships with the the measured parameters, using XLSTAT software. Analyses of the data at sampling stations revealed that Station 2 and 3 were the most representative stations in general. The model results indicated that ke is as important as nutrients for Chl-a abundance. Secchi disk and Chl-a are the most correlated parameters with ke. Moreover Secchi disk depth is nonlinearly correlated with ke, while linearly correlation is present between Chl-a and ke. &emsp

Climate change impacts on production and dynamics of fish populations

Hedström, Per January 2016 (has links)
Ongoing climate change is predicted to increase water temperatures and export of terrestrial dissolved matter (TDOM) to aquatic ecosystems influencing ecosystem productivity, food web dynamics and production of top consumers. Ecosystem productivity is mainly determined by the rates of primary production (GPP) in turn controlled by nutrients, light availability and temperature, while temperature alone affect vital rates like consumption and metabolic rates and maintenance requirements of consumers. Increased level of TDOM causes brownification of water which may cause light limitation in algae and decrease GPP and especially so in the benthic habitat. Temperature increase has a been suggested to increase metabolic rates of consumers to larger extent than the corresponding effect on GPP, which suggest reduced top consumer biomass and production with warming. The aim of this thesis was to experimentally study the effects of increased temperature and TDOM on habitat specific and whole ecosystem GPP and fish densities and production. In a replicated large-scale pond experiment encompassing natural food webs of lotic ecosystems I studied population level responses to warming and brownification in the three- spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Results showed overall that warming had no effect on whole ecosystem GPP, likely due to nutrient limitation, while TDOM input decreased benthic GPP but stimulated pelagic GPP. In fish, results first of all suggested that recruitment in sticklebacks over summer was negatively affected by warming as maintenance requirements in relation to GPP increased and thereby increased starvation mortality of young-of-the-year (YOY) sticklebacks. Secondly, brownification increased mortality over winter in YOY as the negative effect on light conditions likely decreased search efficiency and caused lower consumption rates and starvation over winter in sticklebacks. Third, seasonal production of YOY, older, and total stickleback production was negatively affected by warming, while increased TDOM caused decreased YOY and total fish production. The combined effect of the two was intermediate but still negative. Temperature effects on fish production were likely a result of increased energy requirements of fish in relation to resource production and intake rates whereas the negative effect of TDOM likely was a result of decreased benthic resource production. Finally, effects of warming over a three-year period caused total fish density and biomass and abundance of both mature and old fish to decrease, while proportion of young fish increased. The main cause behind the strong negative effects of warming on fish population biomass and changes in population demographic parameters were likely the temperature driven increased energy requirements relative to resource production and cohort competition. The results from this thesis suggest that predicted climate change impacts on lentic aquatic ecosystems will decrease future densities and biomass of fish and negatively affect fish production and especially so in systems dominated by benthic resource production.

Characterization of nanoparticle aggregates with light scattering techniques

Wozniak, Mariusz 19 October 2012 (has links)
This Ph.D. work provides and evaluates various solutions to characterize, with optical/electromagnetic methods nanoparticles and aggregates of nanoparticles found in suspensions, aerosols and dusty plasmas. Two main models are introduced to describe the morphology of particle aggregates with fractal-like (for particles in plasmas and combustion systems) and Buckyballs-like (aerosols, suspensions) shapes. In addition, the author proposes various solutions and methods (T-Matrix, Rayleigh type approximations) to calculate the scattering diagrams (optical structure factors) of fractal aggregates as well as algorithms to inverse extinction spectra. As a reference case for the performed analysis, several tools to describe the morphology of fractal aggregates from electron microscopy images have been also developed. The experimental validation carried out with the Light Extinction Spectrometry (LES) technique (for nano silica beads, tungsten, dusty plasma and silicon aggregates) clearly proves the validity of the algorithms developed as well as the potential of the LES technique.
