The new Soundforest - The role of lighting in inclusive interactive museum installationsBartl, Ines January 2023 (has links)
This thesis focuses on creating an interactive installation as immersive experience for hearing-impaired user. To date, little research has been conducted especially on interactive (sound) installation for impaired visitors, particularly these visitors with hearing impairments or who are hard-of hearing. Based on literature research and a case study, a new lighting design proposal was developed for Soundforest, an interactive musical installation at Scenkonstmuseet in Stockholm, Sweden. The audio-experience is enhanced ambient lighting, which alters in brightness depending on the interaction of visitors. For evaluation, a prototype was set up in the installation space and tested by one participant. The first testing leads to the assumption that the additional layer of ambient lighting can enhance the emotional experience of the visitors. The results show that the test person had great pleasure in interacting with the prototype. Still, to develop a full picture of the consequences and emotional effects, additional research is required.

Kingery-Page / The purpose of this study is to investigate and design public light art installations. The investigation consisted of evaluating select examples of public light installations in order to develop a typology, and designing two site-specific light art installations: one in Wichita, Kansas, and the other, in Denver, Colorado. Though public light art is found in most cities, its potential is often lost or unrecognized. In certain cases, public light art can be ‘plop art,’ which is plopped senselessly without much regard to context or experiential qualities. This project seeks to explore the different types of public light art and to find what approach or qualities should be considered when designing public light art.
My approach can be described as artistic research. The methods include an apprenticeship to an artist, a precedent study, development of a light typology, an analysis of site and context, establishing a design matrix for two design projects, and an iterative process of making. Each of these methods were undertaken in order to effectively address my research question: What type of public light art is most appropriate for a specific site and how does it relate to creative placemaking?
This project overlaps with a collective project group entitled Creative Place-Making, which is comprised of other fifth-year master of landscape architecture students with an underlying interest in art and design as place-making tools. Each student in the group addressed the site in Wichita, Kansas in a unique way. I addressed this site as a temporary landscape, creating an interactive light installation intended to be in place up to five years. In contrast, I addressed the Denver, Colorado site as a long term landscape, and designed a sculptural illuminating gateway. Each of these light art installations were informed by a particular set of characteristics that make each design site-specific.

År 1947 förutspådde konstnären Thomas Wilfred att ljuskonst inom 20 år skulle bli en självklarhet inom konstvärlden. Nu, nästan 70 år senare är ljuskonst fortfarande inte en erkänd konstform eller ett definierat begrepp. Idag skapas ljuskonst av konstnärer runt om i världen med tilltagande entusiasm samtidigt som det råder en uppenbar kunskapslucka och förvirring kring ljuskonst vilket denna studie ämnar att stilla. Studien syftar till att belysa värdet och nyttan med ljuskonst som utvecklande faktor för ljusdesignsbranschen. Att konsumera konst är ett sätt att berika den inre repertoaren och inspirationskällan. De frågeställningar som undersökts är ”Vad är ljuskonst?”, ”Vad inom ljuskonst inspirerar ljusdesigners och andra som arbetar med ljus? och ”Vilka innovationer har gått från ljuskonst till ljusdesign?”. Arbetet är fokuserat till personer som arbetar med ljus och studiens definition av ljuskonst är konst som gestaltar eller skapas av ljus. Undersökningen har ett intensivt och kvalitativt upplägg och har genomförst med snöbollsmetoden i form av intervjuer via frågeformulär, som totalt besvarats av nära femtio personer. Kompletterande datainsamlingsmetoder består av massmail, telefonintervjuer och sociala medier. Primärdatan har analyserats genom sammanställning, kategorisering och sammanfattning. Det är mycket stor spridning i hur personer som arbetar med ljus beskriver ljuskonst och vad inom den de inspireras av. Vad som är ljuskonst bestäms av vem som är kreatören, var den är placerad, vad den består av och hur den upplevs. Ljuskonst har ett stort inspirationellt värde för personer som arbetar med ljus, som applicerar influenserna från ljuskonstens in i ljusdesign. Studiens slutsatser består i att ljuskonst kan skapas av både naturligt och artificiellt ljus, kan vara allt från en liten detalj till något stort och iögonfallande, skapas till en unik kontext, har ett budskap, en funktion och skiljer sig från ljusdesign i fråga om syfte och kontext. Det inom ljuskonsten som inspirerar personer som arbetar med ljus är projekt där dagsljus behandlas eller efterliknas, dess teknik och material, ljusfestivaler och andra ljusevent, verk där betraktaren kan påverka och bli en del av ljuskonsten, verk som skapar mönster, objekt med eller av ljus, scenljussättning och friheten som upplevs finnas i skapandet av ljuskonst. Studiens resultat pekar avslutningsvis mot att accentuerad arkitektur, färgat och dynamiskt ljus, ljusprojicerade mönster, neon och att placera armaturer med klassisk design för inomhusbruk i exteriöra miljöer, har gått från att betraktas som ljuskonst till ljusdesign. / In 1947 the artist Thomas Wilfred predicted that light art will become an obvious part of the art world in the next 20 years. Now, almost 70 years later, light art is still not acknowledged or defined - neither as a art form or as an expression. Artists today are creating light art all around the world with increasing enthuiaism but in point of fact there is nothing such as light art, according to the encyclopaedias. There is an obvious gap in knowledge and confusion surrounding the field of light art which this study intends to reduce. The study aims to highlight the value and benefit of light art as developing factor for the lighting design industry. Consuming art is one way of enriching the inner repertoire and inspiration. The examined issues are "What is Light art?", "What within Light art inspire Lighting designers and others who work with light?” and "Which innovations have gone from considered as Light Art to Lighting design?". The work is focused on people who work with light and the definition of light art in this study is: art that portrays or creates from light. The survey has a deep and qualitative approach and is accomplished with the snowball method throughout questionnaires, which all together were answered by nearly fifty persons. Complementary methods of collecting data consist of bulk mail, telephone interviews and the posting of the survey at social media. The primary data has been analyzed through compilation, categorization and summary. People who work with light describes light art, and also what within light art they find inspiring, in many widely different ways. In summary light art is defined by who the creator is, where it is located, what it consists of and how it is perceived. Light art inspire people working with light who apply their influences from the field of light art into the lighting design industry. The conclusions is that light art can be created by both natural and artificial light, from small details to big and eye-catching installations, has an unique context, a message, a function, and differs from lighting design in terms of purpose and context. The specific parts within light art that inspire people working with light are projects where daylight is involved, the technology and materials of the pieces, light festivals and other light events, light art pieces where the viewer can influence and become a part of it, works that create patterns or objects by light, stage lighting and the expressive freedom in the making of light art. The results indicates that accentuated architecture, colored and dynamic light, light patterns, neon and the placing of fixtures with classic design for indoor use in exterior environments, has gone from being considered as light art to lighting design.

Shining a Light on the Orkelljunga Preschool CommunityPagee, Nicholas January 2017 (has links)
This thesis contributed to the regional Health School project, specifically informing the community- building efforts of a preschool in Örkelljunga, Sweden as they seek ways to improve communication among immigrant families and teachers. Using a co-design process with stakeholders including a preschool teacher, architects redesigning the school, and a health sciences researcher, this research investigated how a welcoming atmosphere could be created to act as a social intervention in the redesigned school. Interactive ambient light installations are proposed as a way to create this welcoming atmosphere. Installation design was explored through the lenses of multicultural makeup; play behaviour; accessibility and lighting design. Concluding the design research process, which used methods of participatory design, experience prototyping (Buchenau and Fulton Suri, 2000), and live prototyping (Horst and Matthews, 2016), a set of design principles were distilled for stakeholders.

Previous issue date: 2012 / Resumo: No Brasil, as edificações são responsáveis por 45% do consumo de toda energia elétrica produzida no país, sendo 14,6% representado pelo setor comercial. Neste setor, os sistemas de iluminação artificial representam em média 22% do consumo de energia, apresentando grandes possibilidades para ações de eficiência energética. Estudos mostram que é possível reduzir 61% do custo com energia elétrica com ações de eficiência energética em sistemas de iluminação. Levantamentos realizados pelo Procel indicam que nos hipermercados 66,7% possuem potência instalada em iluminação acima de 100 kW, oferecendo grandes oportunidades para ações de eficiência energética no setor de iluminação. A integração da iluminação artificial com a natural possibilita grandes reduções nos custos com energia elétrica, além de proporcionar ambientes mais agradáveis e saudáveis para seus usuários. Ainda, estudos ressaltam que nos projetos luminotécnicos em geral, a eficiência energética do conjunto de equipamentos luminária-lâmpada-reator não costuma ser considerada, sendo comum a adoção de lâmpadas eficientes com luminárias ou reatores pouco eficientes. Neste trabalho, foram analisados dois hipermercados localizados na cidade de Campo Grande - MS. O hipermercado B possui um sistema de aberturas zenitais que possibilita o aproveitamento da iluminação natural e um conjunto de luminárias com refletores brancos e lâmpadas fluorescentes tubulares T8, enquanto o hipermercado A possui um sistema de fechamento com forro e um conjunto de luminárias com refletores metálicos e lâmpadas fluorescentes tubulares T5. Para realizar uma avaliação visando à eficiência energética de ambos os sistemas de iluminação destes hipermercados foram realizados levantamentos em campo, medições do consumo de energia elétrica nos circuitos de iluminação e também medições da distribuição dos níveis internos de iluminâncias. O estudo conclui que o aproveitamento da iluminação natural, associada ao correto dimensionamento do conjunto lâmpada luminária- reator e uso de sistemas automatizados oferecem grandes potenciais para a eficiência energética / Abstract: Buildings in Brazil are responsible for 45% of the whole electrical energy consumption, where 14,6% are performed in commercial buildings. In this sector, artificial lighting represent about 22% share of their energy consumption. Studies show that it is possible to reduce over 50% of the energy cost by implementing energy efficiency actions in lighting systems. According to PROCEL, the installed power with lighting in hypermarkets is greater than 100 kW in over 60% of the cases, thus representing an important type of building in the commercial sector. Additionally, studies show that the group efficiency of the lamp-ballast-luminary if often forgotten, yielding in inefficient lighting projects. The use of natural lighting integrated to the artificial lighting can offer not only potential to reduce energy consumption but also a more pleasant and healthy environment. This work describes a field study that was conducted in two different hypermarkets in the city of Campo Grande - MS in Brazil, with different artificial and natural lighting systems. The lighting system in hypermarket A consists of fluorescent T5 lamps in luminaries with reflexive components and no natural lighting openings while in hypermarket B, it consists of fluorescent T8 lamps in luminaries with no reflexive components and 12 openings for natural lighting. To evaluate and compare the energy efficiency of both lighting systems field research, energy consumption and lighting distribution measurements were carried out. The master thesis is a research about the relationship between memorials and light. It first studies the characteristics of cultural memories and tries to find what the advantages of using lighting as a means of commemoration are. The nowadays memorials are very different compared to the traditional monuments and they should include a changing narrative, treating local and universal messages. They should involve the public.A contemporary memorial is ephemeral and continuously changing- the same as light is.A series of contemporary memorials have been selected to understand the tools that makes them successful. Furthermore, it was analyzed how these parameters could be achieved through light. 12 memorials that use light as an eloquent tool have been interpreted according to certain criteria.The second part of the thesis is an applied project related to the events that happened in Timisoara, Romania, in 1989 during the anticommunist Revolution. The process of creating memorials for Timisoara is a key focus of the study. The development is equally important as the end result. It searches for the significant messages and lessons of the event. Testimonials of the participants to the revolution have been studied. Interviews and questionnaires have been developed. Following this, significant places in the city and messages were chosen. The research will conclude with a lighting installations project proposal.
