An explorative investigation into the effect of frequent versus non-frequent use of social network sites on students’ spelling skills and academic performance

Fourie, Shaun Francois January 2014 (has links)
This paper assesses the relationship between Social Networking Sites (SNS) and the effect of its excessive use on a user’s spelling capabilities and academic performance by using a single-factor, multi-level between subjects design (One-way ANOVA). The One way Anova was applied to SNS use (independent variable) and spelling and academic performance (dependent variables). Furthermore, the independent variable consists of three levels, a few times a month or never, a few times a week and every day. Out of a possible 107 respondents a total of 56 respondents, distributed across the various groups, completed the test. A spelling test together with the academic records was used as an instrument to measure their spelling capabilities. The findings suggest that students that make excessive use of SNS performed worse in the spelling test than students that do not make use of SNS or make use of SNS a few times a month. In addition, it is established that the SNS use has no effect on spelling. Conclusions from this study are that social networking sites have many various impacts on the youth, some being positive and others negative. Although the end result was that SNS do not “significantly” affect your spelling capabilities it is suggested that further research be carried out on this topic on a larger and more representative sample. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Psychology / MA / Unrestricted

Östlund, Erika January 2017 (has links)
Inventory management is considered to be an important activity that companies need to accomplish as improved methods directly can affect the final result. Product allocation within the warehouse is one of the vital parts of inventory management. This report is a case study where a warehouse of a manufacturing company is considered the case. The overall purpose is to investigate how a optimization model can help organizations with their inventory management, by first studying existing processes and based on that create the model to calculate optimal inventory allocation. The study has been conducted through a mixed method, divided into a quantitative and qualitative phase, as research claims that the key to the success of efficient inventory management is to match the layout of the warehouse case policy, stock layout and order types in order to customize the optimization model. In the first phase, a process mapping was conducted to build the optimization design. The second phase was based on mathematically describing the same problem setup, and then to model the problem with collected data. In the process-mapping phase, two differentiation criteria were identified as units sold packages and the unit production cost. The purpose of the classification was to identify which unique products that should be treated differently and receive assigned storage, which was an improvement opportunity found in the case description. A total of 93 products were placed on one of the 220 storage sites, with the aim of minimizing the mileage by truck. Comparison of target function values between the optimal set-up model and the current set, demonstrated a theoretical saving of the number of driven meters of 35%. The study results have shown that mathematical modeling and linear programming can be used for inventory allocation problems to optimize product allocation, where the mathematical model is based on case-specific properties. The model's results are expected to facilitate a number of the problems noted in mapping inventory management processes.

Lingo – ein System zur automatischen Indexierung – Anwendung und Einsatzmöglichkeiten

Müller, Thomas 26 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Hodnocení a rozklad efektivnosti pomocí Malmquistova výkonnostního indexu / Evaluation and decomposition efficiency using Malmquist productivity index

Skočdopol, Petr January 2010 (has links)
At first, the basics of microeconomics from the perspective of companies, effectiveness and methods of its measurement and the most important information on the distance function this thesis, are shown. It also contains the development of the Malmquist productivity index. The aim of this work is the description of this index and its components. Indicate how these values are calculated and what expressed. Secondary objectives are to introduce different variants of Malmquist indexes and their use. Four models are used for calculating individual components of the Malmquist productivity index. These are the DEA models, Aigner-Chu, Stochastic production frontiers and Stochastic activity analysis. The first three in this work are described in detail. In conclusion is an illustrative example of calculation Malmquist productivity index using DEA models. For the calculation I used the program Lingo.

Modely cílového programování: teorie, aplikace, softwarová podpora / Goal Programming Models: Theory, Applications, Software Support

Skočdopolová, Veronika January 2014 (has links)
Goal programming is an approach for solving decision problems. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to show the practical use of this approach for solving real problems. The first chapter brings a brief introduction to multicriteria decision making. The second chapter is devoted to goal programming, its history, theory, criticism and also to its practical applications. The third chapter deals with description of a model for optimisation of white mass production. This model utilises the goal programming principle to deal with measuring deviations of raw materials' composition. A part of this chapter is a presentation of OPTIPROT, an application that implements the mentioned model. In the fourth chapter there are described three mathematical models for timetabling at a department level; two multistage models and one complex model. All three models are formulated utilising goal programming. In this chapter there is also described an application that implements the complex model for timetabling.
