First, it reviews the route of the Brazilian poetry for children and teenagers in order to identify their transformations throughout history, and then, it sees how some poetic texts, with emphasis on contemporary, go beyond the limits of the definition of editorial reader for this genre. Second, we intend to point out methodological paths to work with poetry in school, focusing on the basic Education. In addition, for the historical review of the genre, we have as references the studies of Coelho (2006), Shavit (2003), Turchi (1995), Zilberman (1988). As for the discussion of the formation of the reader, we enclosed the conceptions of reader and reading processes of the aesthetics of reception, with Iser (1996) and Jauss (1994); poetry teaching, Balestriero (1998), and genres of discourse and teaching, in the perspective of Dowlz; Schnewly (2004). The survey of the route of this genre was carried out from the reading of the poetry works published in the late nineteenth century until the first decade of this century, and also, the study on the subject of criticism. Moreover, the search for titles was in private collections and libraries. For the approach to teaching, the various theoretical currents were evoked to propitiate, from one hand, a broader understanding of the formation process of a reader of poetry, and to the other, to propose a methodology that takes the subject to identify a stable structure of genre, and to the use of this structure as a reading tool, applicable to any poem. Comprehensively, the work presents an overview of Brazilian poetry for children and juvenile having as support the field of reception, as it clarifies the constitution of the literary system.

Embodiment and agency in digital reading : preschoolers making meaning with literary apps

Frederico, Aline January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation investigates meaning-making in children's joint-reading transactions with literary apps. The analysis of meaning-making focuses on embodiment as a central aspect of literary app's texts and their reading and on children's negotiation of agency in the act of joint-reading. Meaning-making is understood through a multimodal social semiotics perspective, which considers that meaning is realised in the dynamic transaction between reader, text and social context. Therefore, the dissertation integrates the analysis of the apps and of the children's responses to capture the dynamics of meaning-making in such transactions. Case studies were conducted with six families, who read the apps The Monster at the End of This Book (Stone & Smollin, 2011) and Little Red Riding Hood (Nosy Crow, 2013) in an English public library. The central method of data collection involved video-recorded observations of parent-child joint-reading events, complemented by graphic elicitation, informal interviews and a questionnaire. The video data was analysed through multimodal methods. The findings indicate that the participant readers used their bodies not only as a material point of contact and activation of the interactive features but also as a resource for meaning-making in their transactions with the apps. The reader's body was essential in their engagement with the material and interactive affordances of the apps, in reader's expressions of their responses, and in the sharing of the reading experience with the parents. The body of the reader, through spontaneous and interactive gestures, is a mode of communication in the multimodal ecologies of both the text and the reader's responses. Furthermore, the child readers constantly negotiated their agency within the constraints posed by the text, which include the narrative itself and its interactive features, and those posed by the joint-reading situation. The bodies of the readers played an essential role in this dual negotiation of agency. Children's agency was scripted, that is, the readers exerted their agency within the limitations of a script. The script, however, allowed readers to improvise, and their performances also involved resistance to the script through playful subversion. In the joint-reading event, children's agency was foregrounded, positioning the children as protagonist readers, who performed most of the interactions and lived the aesthetic experience of the text fully, to the expense of their parents, who mostly participated as supporting readers, transferring their agency to the children through scaffolding.

Contextualising the gospel in Africa : youth literature of the Baptist International Publications Services

Kilpatrick, Franklin Arnold 01 1900 (has links)
This dissertation considers the contextualising in African settings of three themes addressed in youth literature of the Baptist International Publications Services (IPS). It utilises a critical methodology developed from Kraft's (1979) ten principles of communication to analyse the efforts to contextualise the themes of salvation, the Christian family and witchcraft. Chapter one discusses contextualisation and presents a critical methodology based on Kraft's ( 1979) principles of communication. Chapter two is an historical background study of the International Publications Services. Chapters three, four and five use the critical methodology developed in chapter one to examine the themes of salvation, the Christian family and witchcraft respectively, as found in IPS youth literature. Chapter six is an analysis and conclusion of the study with suggestions for further research. / Missiology / M.Th.
