Goggan, avocado plants and Stockholmskosher : Doing Jewishness in contemporary Sweden

Nir, Hanna January 2022 (has links)
This study seeks to understand how young Swedish Jews experience their Jewishness in contemporary Sweden. Many have tried to understand Jewishness through surveys. However, this study uses a qualitative approach as well as the lens of lived religion and theories of practice to move focus to how people do their Jewishness. This means focusing on how young people make sense of their Jewishness by what they do and how it feels for them. Through ethnographic interviews, shared experiences and by using the insider/researcher position as a tool, the ambiguous ways in which young Swedish Jews do their Jewishness becomes visible. As the results show, young Swedish Jews carry out both individual and communal Jewish practices. Doing Jewishness on your own can mean doing “weird things”; to carry out unconventional, self-created, Jewish practices. It can also be about carrying on tradition; meaning reproducing more traditional Jewish practices, but with a high level of agency. When doing Jewishness together a “magical feeling of togetherness” and feelings of belonging showed to be important aspects. Ultimately, all these Jewish practices are formed by ambiguous elements such as creativity, temporality, agency, and negotiation. When doing Jewishness, regardless of whether it is about going to synagogue: “goggan”, planting avocado seeds, or creating your own interpretation of kosher, the young Swedish Jews negotiate between what is meaningful for them and what is possible in the context of the majority society. In sum, this alternative approach to Jewish experience, where its meaning is not predetermined by researchers or Jewish institutions, can challenge our understanding of what it means to be a young Jew in Sweden today.

Molecular Beam Studies of Short-Lived Molecules

Gray, John 02 1900 (has links)
A molecular beam apparatus has been designed and constructed for the purpose of studying gas phase interactions between ions and molecules. A neutralization-reionization technique has been developed which permits the lifetimes of some short lived molecules to be estimated. In this way the existence of He₂, HeH and HeD molecules has been demonstrated but similar experiments have produced no evidence for the existence of H₃, D₃ or D₂H molecules with the same order of lifetimes. A collisional dissociation technique has been devised which permits analysis of molecular ions in beams and demonstrated the existence of He₃⁺ ions in low temperature helium discharges. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Patienters upplevelser av att leva med stomi : En litteraturöversikt

Altorh, Anas, Vogt, Michael January 2023 (has links)
Background:  A stoma operation can be a life-saving surgical procedure, but life after the operation is challenging for the individual. Previous research indicates that living with a stoma is fraught with challenges related to stoma complications. Aim:               The aim of this study is to describe the lived experience of ostomates. Method:         This study is a literature review with an overview of qualitative studies. The databases PubMed, ScienceDirect and Cinahl have been used to search for relevant literature. Ten original scientific articles were used in this review and synthesised with content analysis. Result:            Stoma patients experience challenges related to a changed body, have negative feelings and thoughts connected to the stoma, experience a changed daily life and experience social consequences associated with the stoma. Social support is crucial for adaptation to the ostomy and ultimately ostomy patients must reach a level of acceptance of the ostomy. Conclusion:   Individuals living with a stoma face unique challenges and it is an arduous learning process to not only learn to manage the stoma, but also accept it. Nurses have a key role to play in providing the stoma patient with adequate knowledge to competently manage the stoma, as well as supporting the individual in accepting the stoma. However, every ostomy patient is an individual with unique circumstances, thus a person-centred approach including individually tailored support and information is appropriate when providing care for ostomy patients.

Becoming Canadian: Examining the Lived Experiences of Recent Adult Chinese Immigrants to Canada

Cao, Xingtan 24 November 2023 (has links)
The 2021 Census reported that immigrants with a Chinese ethnic background take up 4.7% of the Canadian population. Although Chinese immigrants represent a significant part of the Canadian population, how they understand their relationship with Canada has not been studied directly in educational research. In response, this manuscript-based thesis examines the lived experiences of six adult (aged 18 and above) Chinese immigrants who have arrived in Canada and obtained their permanent residency or Canadian citizenship after 2010. Adopting Connelly and Clandinin's narrative inquiry, this study presents stories of participants with the hope to shed light on the process of Chinese immigrants becoming Canadian. Through these presentations, this study attends to the complex relationships participants have gone through in the process of negotiating their acceptance in Canada. Data gathered from two rounds of semi-structured interviews with six recent adult Chinese immigrants living in Ontario and Quebec were interpreted and discussed using Berry's acculturation framework, a critical multiculturalism framework and a Critical Race Theory (CRT) framework in three individual research articles. Findings reveal that Chinese immigrants actively participate in social, cultural, political and economic affairs in Canada. Their participation in Canadian society exhibits their acceptance of Canadian cultures and values while living in Canada. Based on these understandings, they offer their suggestions to make Canada a more democratic, just and livable place. Racism, discriminations and stereotypes received from some members of the host society have created tangible damage to their relationship with Canada. Nonetheless, Chinese immigrants express their desire to be included and integrated into Canadian society. These narratives from recent adult Chinese immigrants supplement literature in citizenship education. Policy makers, scholars, educators and the general public should listen to their stories and find more ways to include Chinese immigrants in the building of democracy and multiculturalism in Canada.

Factors Related to Teacher Retention: the Lived Experiences of Four Teachers in an Urban, Hard-to-staff High School

Julian, Chris 08 1900 (has links)
Retaining quality teachers is critical to the success of America's schools. How to retain quality teachers, especially in high needs schools, is a question of fervent debate among educational researchers, policy makers, administrators, parents, and students. This study examines the issue of teacher retention from an emic perspective, focused on understanding the perspective of those closest to the retention decision, teachers in hard-to-staff schools. This study examines the lived experiences of four teachers at a hard-to-staff, urban, secondary school as these experiences impact their decisions to remain in teaching and at their current campus. Research methods adopted an existential phenomenological perspective and focused on understanding deeply the perspective of participants and how participants make meaning of their lived experiences as they relate to the retention decision. Three hour-long interviews were conducted with each of the four participants utilizing methodology laid out by Seidman (1991). Data were analyzed using NVIVO 10 to apply a series of coding and recoding procedures to interview transcripts. Conclusions suggest four factors motivated these teachers to teach and remain in their current hard-to-staff, urban, secondary school. These factors include: belief in the power of education, relationships with students, mentoring and professional partnering, and remaining professionally challenged. Findings suggest factors that drive teachers out of teaching and out of hard-to-staff schools include: inconsistent administrative support, low student motivation, and lack of resources.

Föräldrars upplevelser av att leva med ett barn som har Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) : En litteraturstudie / Parents experience of living with a child that has Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) : A literature study

Jansson, Jenny January 2023 (has links)
Nyckelord: ADHD, Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, parents, lived experience, nursing, stress.

Upplevelser av att leva med en protes för nedre extremitet : En litteraturstudie / Experiences of living with a prosthesis for lower extremity : A literature study

Ottosson, Nina, Böhm, Emma January 2023 (has links)
Background: The prosthesis has existed since ancient Egypt. Living with a prosthesis can have both negative and positive effects on the prosthesis user. The transition contributes to a new lifestyle where each individual can be affected to different extents both psychologically and physically. The nurse needs to have knowledge about the experiences of a prosthesis user in order to be able to help the prosthesis user adapt to life with a prosthesis. Aim: The aim of the study was to illustrate experiences of living with a lower extremity prosthesis. Method: The general literature review study included ten result articles that were searched in the databases CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO and Sage Journals. The articles were analyzed using a guide for qualitative research made by Popenoe et al. (2021). Results: Five categories emerged and these were: mobility, comfort and function, impact from the society, education, jobs and finances and social support. All categories highlighted what it can be like to live with a prosthesis for the lower limb. Conclusion: The prosthesis can bring a sense of independence as well as a limitation that includes pain and problems with the fitting of the prosthesis. Support from relatives and healthcare professionals was important for the recovery. It was also essential that healthcare staff provided good and sufficient information to the patient. Further research is needed on prosthesis users’ experiences of living with a lower extremity prosthesis where nurses gain the knowledge required to provide good nursing care.

How to cope and how to resist : Religion, Culture and Courage Among Thai Women in Belgium Faced with Intimate Partner Violence.

Lane, Philip January 2023 (has links)
This thesis studies, through a series of interviews, the use of Lived Religion and cultural practices by migrant Thai women in Belgium as they seek to cope with the intimate partner violence they have suffered. The research looks at which strategies help the women to cope and which empower them to resist and leave their abusive context. The women were all beneficiaries of a Thai language support program run by the non-profit organisation Oasis Belgium.  The research uses a theoretical framework of Lived Religion, the religious and cul- tural practises in everyday life. In this case, this is not connected to congregational worship. In fact, the women in the study were very isolated and had to reconstruct their Lived Religion and cultural practice for themselves in their new location. To do this, they relied strongly on the memory of religion in their upbringing, the use of online media and communication with family back in Thailand. Through Lived Religion they were able to gain agency over their emotional reactions and then con- sider the problems they faced more objectively and decide how change might come.
