Locating identity and ethnicity in Cornish civil society : Penzance, a case study

Harris, Richard John Pascoe January 2016 (has links)
Recently there has been considerable interest in Cornish ethnicity reflected both by a rise in the numbers in Cornwall who identify as Cornish and by academic research. Cornish studies have constructed a regional narrative embracing Celticity and an economy based on primary industries, particularly mining, from which has evolved a distinctive culture. This study adopting an ethnographic approach, extends Cornish studies by considering a number of elements which have not previously been addressed. These include investigating how identity may be played out in a particular place to see whether there may be differences in how ethnicity is performed within Cornwall, looking at how it may be practiced collectively in the context of civil society and examining the relationship between ethnicity and place identity. Three settings within Penzance have been selected to represent some of the issues prevalent in twenty first century Cornwall. They include a study of festivals celebrating ethnicity and place identity, an investigation of how kinship and ethnicity are the basis for social cohesion on a social housing estate and an analysis of a dispute over harbour re-development reflecting tensions between regeneration and conservation. Investigating the civil society associated with each of these settings has identified a number of discourses which influence place images, are the focus for debate and reflect different ways in which ethnicity is articulated and performed. Influences on Cornish identity have been exposed which have not been previously explored by Cornish Studies including the relationship between civil society and the state, the importance of place mythology and the impact of inward migration. The study concludes that collective identities, ethnicity and place images are constantly in flux driven by discourses debated within the micro-politics of civil society and that the overarching narratives of Cornishness contain tensions and cleavages which help explain the fractured nature of much of public life in Cornwall.

Martineau, Sébastien 10 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with two kinds of statistical mechanics problems: percolation ongroups and directed models. In the first case, we realise the group under considerationas a geometric object (via the notion of Cayley graph) before breaking it apartrandomly. The study of this process reveals deep connections between the geometricproperties of a group and the behaviour of Bernoulli percolation on it. In the secondcase, we focus on models where up and down play different roles, which makes severalquestions less hard to tackle.Chapter 1 strengthens the Indistinguishability Theorem of Lyons-Schramm, whichstates that the infinite clusters yielded by a Bernoulli percolation on a Cayley graphalmost surely all look alike. The non-Triviality of this strengthening is illustrated bya directed model that satisfies the Indistinguishability Property but not the StrongIndistinguishability Property.Chapter 2 has been obtained in collaboration with Vincent Tassion. We show thatthe value of the critical parameter for Bernoulli percolation essentially only dependson the local structure of the considered abelian Cayley graph. In Chapter 3, we introduce a directed version of the DLA model, for which weestablish the existence of an infinite volume dynamics, control the propagation ofinformation and prove asymptotic inequalities on the width and height of the cluster.

A arquitetura das sinagogas: exemplos relevantes e sua transformação no tempo / The architecture of the synagogues: relevant examples and its transformation in time

Sergio Rugik Gomes 11 May 2011 (has links)
The ancestry of the synagogue building attributed to this a central paper in the formation of the religious architecture occidental person. However, its adaptation to the locality in elapsing of the centuries granted to it the most varied repertoires. On aspects to the use, however, had demanded space solutions for problematic that they had remained throughout the time. These solutions that involve the program of necessities of the buildings, its dimension and capacity of use, its relations with the architecture of the different localities and the subsequent actions of preservation of the identity and the organization of the elements of the liturgy inside of the internal space of the building, had generated the transformations that, congregated, constitute a picture of the architecture of the synagogue in the time.

\"Meu Portugal é a aldeia\": etnografia de uma dinâmica de circulação migratória e práticas transnacionais / \"Meu Portugal é a aldeia\": ethnography of the dynamics of migratory movement and transnational practices

Weslei Estradiote Rodrigues 29 November 2013 (has links)
This research is the result of ethnographic observations about a proposed cut to a partic-ular frame of transnational migratory movement. From the approach of a specific case, emigration is taken from different scales of analysis, but with emphasis on the ways in which it is produced and meant at the local level. The frame refers to the seasonal movements focused on departure and return of emigrants from the village of Vilas Bo-as, northeast of Portugal. I seek to follow the agents for their displacements between the context of departure and destination contexts for which they headed, without losing the perspective of the village as the focus of interest in social participation of agents. Most of the field work, however, occurred in the context of massive return of migrants to the village for the celebration of a religious festival site. In this context are observed the different ways in which the emigrant group relates to the people residing in the village as well as the ways in which their participation in making the party and the local social life. It is, therefore, a reflection on practices that sustain social relations transnationally and update the reunion caused by return.

Courbes remplissant l'espace et leur application en traitement d'images / Spacer-filling curves and their application in image processing

Nguyen, Giap 14 November 2013 (has links)
The space-filling curves are known for the ability to order the multidimensional points on a line while preserving the locality, i.e. the close points are closely ordered on the line. The locality preserving is wished in many applications. Hilbert curve is the best locality preserving space-filling curve. This curve is originally proposed in 2D, i.e. it is only applied to points in a 2D space. For application in the multidimensional case, we propose in this thesis a generalization of Hilbert curve. Generalized curve is based on the essential property of Hilbert curve that creates its level of locality preserving: the adjacency. Thus, it avoids the dependence on the pattern RBG, which is the only pattern of the curve extended by previous researches. The result is a family of curves preserving well the locality. The optimization of the locality preserving is also addressed to find out the best locality preserving curve. For this purpose, we propose a measure of the locality preserving. Based on the parameters, this measure can adapt to different application situations such as the change of metric or locality size. The curve construction is an important part of the thesis. It is the basis of the index calculation used in application. For a rapid index calculation, the self-similar Hilbert curves is used. They are Hilbert curves satisfying the self-similar conditions specified in chapitre 4. The generalized curve is finally applied in image search. It is the question of the content-based image search (CBIR) where each image is characterized by a multidimensionalvector. Images are ordered by the curve of a line, and the search is simplified to the search on an ordered list. By giving an input image, similar images are those corresponding to neighbors of the index of the input. The locality preserving ensures that these indexes correspond to similar images.

Only Data Specific Management for an Energy Efficient Memory System

Vaumourin, Gregory 04 October 2016 (has links)
The energy consumption of the memory system in modern architectures is a major issue for embedded system limited by their battery or supercalculators limited by their Thermal Design Power. Using a classification information in the memory system allows a heterogeneous management of data, more specific to each kind of data. During this thesis, we focused on the specific management of read-only data into the memory system through a compilation/architecture codesign. It allows to explore new potentials in terms of data locality, scalability of the system or cache designs. Evaluated by simulation with multi-core architecture, the proposed solution others significant energy consumption reduction while keeping the performance stable.

Proximity coherence for chip-multiprocessors

Barrow-Williams, Nick January 2011 (has links)
Many-core architectures provide an efficient way of harnessing the growing numbers of transistors available in modern fabrication processes; however, the parallel programs run on these platforms are increasingly limited by the energy and latency costs of communication. Existing designs provide a functional communication layer but do not necessarily implement the most efficient solution for chip-multiprocessors, placing limits on the performance of these complex systems. In an era of increasingly power limited silicon design, efficiency is now a primary concern that motivates designers to look again at the challenge of cache coherence. The first step in the design process is to analyse the communication behaviour of parallel benchmark suites such as Parsec and SPLASH-2. This thesis presents work detailing the sharing patterns observed when running the full benchmarks on a simulated 32-core x86 machine. The results reveal considerable locality of shared data accesses between threads with consecutive operating system assigned thread IDs. This pattern, although of little consequence in a multi-node system, corresponds to strong physical locality of shared data between adjacent cores on a chip-multiprocessor platform. Traditional cache coherence protocols, although often used in chip-multiprocessor designs, have been developed in the context of older multi-node systems. By redesign- ing coherence protocols to exploit new patterns such as the physical locality of shared data, improving the efficiency of communication, specifically in chip-multiprocessors, is possible. This thesis explores such a design - Proximity Coherence - a novel scheme in which L1 load misses are optimistically forwarded to nearby caches via new dedicated links rather than always being indirected via a directory structure.

Vzdělávání romských dětí a kultura chudoby / Education of Roma Children and the Culture of Poverty

Siváková, Aneta January 2021 (has links)
The main goal of this diploma thesis is based on conceptual analysis and empirical research to assess the suitability of the concept of poverty culture (Oscar Lewis) for analyzing the situation of socially excluded people - specifically Roma - in the Czech Republic with emphasis on education. In the first part of the work I will focus on the analysis of key terms and concepts related to racism, ethnicity and especially the culture of poverty. The second part is devoted to the issue of Roma education in the Czech Republic. I will use the knowledge from these parts as a basis for the operationalization of the given conceptual field into a form usable for empirical research. The last part introduces the implementation of a qualitative research probe between teachers and teaching assistants in a selected socially excluded locality, which focuses mainly on their work motivation and approach to socially excluded localities, etc. My research shows that the concept of Oscar Lewis can be applied in a school environment.

Návratnost investic do developerského projektu s ohledem na měnící se kvalitu lokality / Return on Investment in a Development Project with Regard to the Changing Quality of the Site

Holpuch, Michal January 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with the influence of changes in the surrounding of development project area on its return. This is done in the form of defining the main areas of environmental change. These are based on exploration of the possibilities of urban development, the development process and the methods of its evaluation. From them, possible scenarios are put together, determined their predictability, identified aspects that can affect them and the stages of the process when they can occur. These scenarios are eventually verified on specific projects.
