Teacher Lore Concerning Teaching English Language Learners in Urban Schools: A Reciprocal Determinist Analysis

Colby, Helen Clare 12 June 2020 (has links)
Changing patterns of immigration have caused schools in the U.S., which previously encountered few to no English Language Learners (ELLs), to see classrooms filled with many ELLs (Massey & Capoferro, 2008; Walker et al., 2004). Existing research on teaching ELLs focused heavily on the work of pre-service or early years educators’ teaching in secondary or post-secondary settings (de Courcy, 2011; Flynt, 2018; Rahman et al., 2018). This study uncovered the teacher lore of four veteran teachers of ELLs employed at a Title I, urban elementary school in the Rocky Mountain region. Data collection and analysis utilized techniques of narrative research, with a priori coding based in Bandura’s (1989) theory of reciprocal determinism (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000; Kim, 2016). The stories shared by these experienced educators revealed nine categories of teacher lore about the reality of teaching ELLs. Based on the lore revealed, this study concludes that 1) teachers need the freedom to exercise their professional judgment when teaching ELLs, and 2) the amount of resources available directly influence what any teacher can accomplish. The findings of this study apply to other teachers of ELLs, professionals interested in designing teacher-led, context based professional development, and policy makers interested in improving academic outcomes for ELLs (Marlowe, 2006).

Awen, Barddas, and the Age of Blake

Franklin, William Neal 05 1900 (has links)
Studies of William Blake's poetry have historically paid little attention to the Welsh literary context of his time, especially the bardic lore (barddas), in spite of the fact that he considered himselfto be a bard and created an epic cosmos in which the bardic had exalted status. Of particular importance is the Welsh concept of the awen, which can be thought of as "the muse," but which must not be limited to the Greek understanding of the term For the Welsh, the awen had to do with the Christian concept of the Holy Spirit, and beyond that, with the poet's connection with his inspiration, or genius, whether Christian of otherwise. This study explores the idea of inspiration as it evolves from the Greek idea of the Muse, as it was perceived in the Middle Ages by Welsh writers, and as it came to be understood and utilized by writers in the Age of Blake.

Smuteční obřad v druhé polovině 20. století / Funeral ceremony in the second half of the 20th century

Šafránková Šídová, Erika January 2012 (has links)
Death is an ever-present fact in human life and it affects its life course. Stable form of funeral ritual is developed from the need for reconciliation with one's own mortality and loss of loved ones. Traditional funeral ceremony based on combination of lore and Christian ritual had changed due to changes in political and social life during the 20th century. Probably the biggest effect had the administration of communist party which lasted for 40 years and which used funeral ceremony as propaganda of its regime. The struggle with traditional Christian funeral was connected with an open fight with church as such and was caused by communist effort to dominate social life. Instead of traditional Christian funeral communism proclaimed cremation as an anticlerical burial option. Effects of communism then developed new funeral rituals. This text is motivated by the effort to identify perception of death and its changes in Czech republic in the second half of the 20th century, using literary and oral sources. It searches for an answer to the question of whether communist regime changed funeral ritual and tries to identify it in taped oral sources.

Singing songs is an integral part of the narrative approach, narrative is complemented by tones and melodies for better memorization. The theoretical part defines the terms: narration, econaratology and folk song. I am interested in what place there the narrative approach in environmental education takes and what are its benefits. I allude to the use of narrative and folk songs as a means of education in practice. The aim of the thesis is based on research findings to determine the extent to which children are able to follow recordings of sound recording recognize and identify vocalizations of domestic or wild animals and industrial sounds of outside world. The questionnaire consists of idioms, which have emerged as the examples in theoretical parts but also with the help of dictionaries of Czech phraseology and idioms.

Fiskmannen, Myten, Legenden : En studie om manliga sjöjungfrur ur ett genusperspektiv

Jilkén, Olle January 2017 (has links)
This paper addresses the representation of the male equivalent of the mermaid - the merman - in illustrations. The paper relies on a theoretical framework of gender studies, queer theory, masculinity studies and previous studies of the mermaid including psychoanalysis and folkloric studies. The paper focuses on four different representations of the merman: The Pin-up, The Romantic Couple, The Fish Boy and The Elderly Merman. Each type is examined by their portrayal of gender, sexuality, masculinity, the gendered gazes in the picture and the intertextual relation to mermaid mythology, folklore and research. The paper concludes that the illustrations of the merman are shaped by a polarized gender norm. The different representations show a wide range of implicit looks, sexualities and various ways in how they relate to the mermaid myth. Some strategies implemented in the pictures imply that the male body still resists an objectified position. The sexualized merman follows the beauty ideals for the western man in mainstream media since the 1980’s where whiteness, muscles, youth and sensitivity are prioritized. The mermen that do not follow this ideal is pictured as frightening and/or asexual. All mermen have in common that they are feminized and exoticized due to their close connection to nature.

LORE I SOCIALA OCH LIVS- SIMULATIONSSPEL : Fallstudie av The Sims och Animal Crossing / LORE IN SOCIAL AND LIFE SIMULATION GAMES : Case Study of The Sims and Animal Crossing Franchises

Scheving, Julia January 2023 (has links)
Many video games have elaborate plots and storylines with intricate world-building and lore for the players to explore. However, some games are about doing real-life activities in a virtual world. These type of games belong to the Social and Life Simulation  genre of games. Often, games within this genre are considered to be plotless, with the presumption that they are lore-less as well. Even though these games do not have a specific plotline to follow there may still be evidence of lore and stories in these games. A case study is conducted, examinimg community-created content for the Social and Life- simulation games Animal Crossing and The Simms that highlight lore and stories in the games. The result shows that the games contain lore wich can be used as a starting point for players to create theories and stories of their own during game play.
