Comparisons of Structural Designs in FireCollette, Kristin A 03 May 2007 (has links)
How well do calculations methods prescribed in today's design codes and standards represent conditions in natural fires? Can the temperature and behavior of a steel member in fire be predicted from these calculations? A literature review of structural fire codes, full scale fire tests, published fire test data, the function and selection of design fires, mechanical and thermal behaviors of structural steel, and numerical calculation methods for the temperature of steel members was conducted as a foundation to analyze whether a not a structural fire engineer can answer these questions. Through comparisons of published data from four natural fires tests performed at the Cardington test facility in the United Kingdom to numerical calculations based upon prescribed methods from Eurocode 3 and the Swedish Design Manual, time-temperature curves were developed to demonstrate the variation in temperature of the recorded data in the natural fire tests at Cardington to the equivalent members being analyzed with numerical calculation methods. When available, fire compartment characteristics were replicated during numerical calculations to ensure the highest correlation between the recorded and calculated results. An Excel tool was created to rapidly calculate and produce the resulting time-temperature curves as well as yield strength, modulus of elasticity, and load carrying capacity using a variety of input parameters including design fire data and steel member selection. The goal of the Cardington fires study was to provide comparisons of published natural fire data to results of numerical calculation methods from the codes. Additional comparisons were developed using a US Office design to show the effects of changing compartment and design parameters on the steel temperature, yield strength, elastic modulus and load carrying capacity. Differences found in temperature of steel members between the published Cardington data and numerical calculations proved the difficulty of predicting the behavior of a structural steel beam throughout an entire length of a fire or even until failure. Discussion of results addressed the selection of design fires, input parameters, structural layouts of office buildings, heating and cooling phases of steel members, and failure criteria.

Sometimes, construction materials, other objects and any projections from a building may also decrease the spacing provided between the buildings. This leads to the problem of pounding of these closely placed buildings when responding to earthquake ground motion. The recent advent of base isolation systems and their use as an efficient earthquake force resisting mechanism has led to their increased use in civil engineering structures. At the same time, building codes that reflect best design practice are also evolving. The movement of these base isolated buildings can also result in building pounding. Since base isolation is itself a relatively new technique, pounding phenomenon in base isolated buildings have not been adequately investigated to date. This study looks at the base isolated response of a single two story building and adjacent two story building systems. Four earthquakes with increasing intensity were used in this study. It was found that it is difficult to anticipate the response of the adjacent buildings due to non- linear behavior of pounding and base isolation. The worst case for pounding was found to occur when a fixed base and base isolated buildings were adjacent to each other.

designing filters with equal-ripple or maximally flat passbands and general stopbands by using
cascade synthesis technique in transformed frequency domain. Synthesis technique is applicable
to lumped element and commensurate line distributed element filters with Lowpass,
Highpass or Bandpass characteristics. Singly or Doubly terminated filters can be synthesized. friendly environment for typing in the parameters of the filter to be designed. This part uses
Synthesis and Plot parts as modules.
This software is based on the previous softwares developed in EEE Department of Middle
East Technical University. All the previous softwares were gathered in the well-known software
Filpro, which is in DOS environment, in Pascal. Thus, the new software is actually a
conversion of Synthesis part of Filpro from DOS environment into Windows environment in
the language C#, with some improvements in root finding algorithms for numerical conditioning.
Synthesis Software is has three parts. The first and main part is the implementation
of synthesis technique by using object oriented programming technique. In this way, synthesis
technique implementation is isolated from other parts of Synthesis Software and it can be
used by other filter design programs as a module. The second part of the program is responseplotting
section. In this part Insertion Loss, Return Loss, Time Delay, Phase and Smith Chart
responses are calculated and displayed. The last part is User Interface, which provides user

In this study, sound radiation and power flow characteristics of plates which constitute the bodies of common engineering applications like cars and household appliances are investigated. Three different vibro-acoustical measurement techniques are used in an integrated manner and results obtained are compared with those obtained from analytical models developed.
Two-microphone sound intensity measurement with a probe utilizing side-by-side configuration is used to analyze the near-field radiation characteristics of a square steel plate excited by a shaker at its midpoint. Surface intensity is simultaneously measured on the plate with another probe consisting of a condenser microphone and an eddy-current non-contact displacement transducer to compare the results with those obtained from two-microphone sound intensity measurement. Surface intensity is also measured with a probe consisting of a condenser microphone and an accelerometer as an alternative configuration. Structural intensity is used to identify the power flow patterns on the plate. All measurements are repeated for externally damped configuration of the same plate and results are analyzed. Easily adoptable two distinct, lumped parameter models of the plate are developed to compute the sound power radiated by the structure. In these models, the plate is modeled by employing the pulsating sphere and vibrating piston as the elementary source types, alternatively. In the model employing vibrating piston in the baffle, results are obtained with and without mutual interaction among partitions. Results obtained from these models are compared with the experimental results. Error analysis is also conducted for all of the measurement techniques employed.

Wafer-level encapsulated high-performance mems tunable passives and bandpass filtersRais-Zadeh, Mina 08 July 2008 (has links)
This dissertation reports, for the first time, on the design and implementation of tunable micromachined bandpass filters in the ultra high frequency (UHF) range that are fully integrated on CMOS-grade (resistivity=10-20 ohm.cm) silicon. Filters, which are designed in the Elliptic and coupled-resonator configuration, are electrostatically tuned using tunable microelectromechanical (MEM) capacitors with laterally movable interdigitated fingers. Tunable filters and high-quality factor (Q) integrated passives are made in silver (Ag), which has the highest conductivity of all materials in nature, to reduce the ohmic loss. The loss of the silicon substrate is eliminated by using micromachining techniques. The combination of the highest-conductivity metal and a low-loss substrate significantly improves the performance of lumped components at radio frequencies (RF), resulting in an insertion loss of 6 dB for a tunable lumped bandpass filter at 1075 MHz with a 3 dB-bandwidth of 63 MHz and tuning range of 123 MHz. The bandpass filters are encapsulated at the wafer level using a low-temperature, thermally released, polymer packaging process. This thesis details the design, fabrication, and measurement results of the filters and provides strategies to improve their performance. The performance of filter components, including the tunable capacitors and inductors, is characterized and compared to the state-of-the-art micromachined passive components. The silver inductors reported in this thesis exhibit the record high Q, and the silver bandpass filters show the minimum insertion loss that has been achieved on a CMOS-grade silicon substrate, to the best of our knowledge. Alternatively, tunable capacitors can be made in the bulk of silicon using a modified version of the high-aspect-ratio polysilicon and single crystal silicon (HARPSS) fabrication technique to obtain a larger capacitance density at the expense of a higher conductive loss. Using this process, a 15 pF two-port tunable capacitor is fabricated and tuned by 240% with the application of 3.5 V to the isolated actuator. Silver inductors can be post integrated with HARPSS tunable capacitors to obtain tunable filters in the very high frequency (VHF) range. The reported bandpass filters can be monolithically integrated with CMOS and have the potential to replace several transmit and receive acoustic filters currently used in cellular phones.

Frequency response analysis (FRA) is a frequency-domain method which is used to detect mechanical faults in transformers. The frequency response of a transformer is determined by its geometry and material properties, and it can be considered as the transformer’s fingerprint. If there are any mechanical changes in the transformer, for example if the windings are moved or distorted, its fingerprint will also be changed so, theoretically, mechanical changes in the transformer can be detected with FRA. A problem with FRA is the fact that there is no general agreement about how to interpret the measurement results for detection of winding damages. For instance, the interpretation of measurement results has still not been standardized.The overall goal of this thesis is to try to enhance the understanding of the information contained in FRA measurements. This has been done in two ways: (1) by examining the FRA method for (much) higher frequencies than what is usual, and (2) by developing a new method in which FRA is combined with the ideas of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). As tools for carrying out the above mentioned steps, models for the magnetic core and the winding have been developed and verified by comparison to measurements.The usual upper frequency limit for FRA is around 2 MHz, which in this thesis has been extended by an order of magnitude in order to detect and interpret new phenomena that emerge at high frequencies and to investigate the potential of this high-frequency region for detection of winding deteriorations.Further, in the above-mentioned new method developed in this thesis, FRA and TDR are combined as a step towards an easier and more intuitive detection and localization of faults in transformer windings, where frequency response measurements are visualized in the time domain in order to facilitate their interpretation. / QC 20111122

Previous issue date: 2006-08-02 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Most of researches about Raman amplifier had been made in C and L bands (1530-1625 nm), which is possible to found more data of Raman efficiency gain and the requirements for design is consolidated. The first issue that should be considered when the amplifier is to use in another band, like our project (O-band) is to consider the decrease of effective area and
wavelength in the calculation of Raman efficiency, not only the pump wavelength. We have two configuration types: for the first one, the gain is obtained in the transmission fiber and for the second that is demonstrated in this work, we need special fibers as DSF, DCF and Raman fiber to amplifier the signals. Note that the amplification can be obtained in any band of optical spectrum, which depends on the pump wavelength that is used for made it. Our studies demonstrated that the discrete Raman amplifier that was made of Raman fiber of OFS Fitel Denmark was more efficient in short wavelengths and has more improvement when it was working in O-band. In spite of the higher attenuation, we can have higher Raman gain efficiency (CR) because the effective area (Aeff) decreased in short wavelengths. The characteristics of Raman fiber were studied when we found the Raman gain efficiency peak of 3.9 (W.km)-1 for a pump laser of 1240 nm wavelength. For this case, the gain of O-band amplifier was about 50 % higher when we compared with the C-band. For a CWDM system, we need to design a multi-pump amplifier. It is necessary four pump lasers to amplifier a bandwidth of 70 nm and six pump lasers to cover all O-band. The gain value depends on the pump power and if we want a good result, we should verify the total power of channels in the input of amplifier to avoid the device saturation.
In addition, the noise figure of Raman amplifier was studied and then we found results that demonstrated higher noise values in short wavelengths specially, when we need to locate
some pump lasers between signal wavelengths. / A maior parte das pesquisas realizadas sobre amplificadores Raman tem seus estudos centrados nas bandas C (1530 a 1565 nm) e L (1565 a 1625 nm), regiões onde os dados de eficiência de ganho Raman e a parametrização dos amplificadores têm seus estudos consolidados. Um ponto importante para ser considerado quando se deseja trabalhar numa banda diferente, como no caso a banda O (1260 a 1360 nm), é que a alteração não é apenas no comprimento de onda do laser de bombeio. Deve-se considerar o decréscimo da área efetiva e do comprimento de onda que influenciará diretamente no valor da eficiência e conseqüentemente no próprio ganho do amplificador Raman. Alguns amplificadores Raman utilizam a própria fibra de transmissão e outros têm como meio de amplificação fibras especiais como DSF, DCF ou a própria fibra Raman como é demonstrado neste trabalho. Sabe-se, no entanto, que a amplificação Raman pode ocorrer
em qualquer banda do espectro óptico sendo necessário para a sua montagem, apenas alterar o comprimento de onda do laser de geração do efeito. Este trabalho demonstrou que o Amplificador Raman Discreto utilizando a fibra Raman da OFS Fitel Denmark é mais eficiente em comprimentos de onda menores e com melhor aproveitamento na região compreendida pela banda O . Nossos estudos demonstraram que apesar do aumento da atenuação nesta região, pode-se obter maior Eficiência de Ganho Raman (CR) devido ao decréscimo da Área Efetiva (Aeff) em comprimentos de onda curtos. A variação das características da fibra Raman para a banda O foram analisadas sendo encontrado um pico de Eficiência de Ganho Raman de 3,9 (W.km)-1 para um laser de bombeio de 1240 nm resultando em torno de 50 % a mais de Ganho no amplificador quando comparado com a banda C .
Analisando o amplificador utilizando múltiplos lasers de bombeio, verificou-se que para uma aplicação em sistema CWDM seriam necessários 4 lasers para amplificação numa faixa de 70 nm e 6 lasers para cobrir toda a banda O sendo que a magnitude de amplificação depende diretamente da potência destes lasers devendo-se observar a potência total dos canais na entrada para evitar a saturação do dispositivo.
Foi analisada a figura de ruído do amplificador Raman sendo encontrados valores mais altos em comprimentos de onda curtos e de maior magnitude quando há lasers de bombeio
entre os comprimentos de onda de sinal.

Tato práce řeší návrh komplexního modelu asynchronního stroje, pomocí něhož se dá stroj analyzovat. Model se skládá z dílčích modelů, které popisují asynchronní stroj z hlediska elektro-magnetického, elektrického a tepelného. Elektromagnetický model je řešen pomocí metody koneč-ných prvků v programu zvaném FEMM. Další výpočty jsou provedeny pomocí Matlabu. Tepelný model počítá s ustáleným stavem stroje v požadovaném pracovním bodě. Elektrický model je řešen pomocí náhradního schématu, ze kterého jsou odvozeny vztahy pro elektrické veličiny. Výsledný propojený model je naprogramován v Matlabu a slouží jako nástroj pro analyzování asynchronního stroje.

Above all shows theoretical consecution of temperature profile calculation in oven by using known mathematical method like the lumped capacitance method or finite difference method. Theoretical solution and measured values are compared. Diploma thesis also deals with fixation methods of thermocouples K type on assembly, comparison methods based on known and subexperiment, determines the deficiencies of methods. This thesis can perform as theoretical as well as experimental resource to prediction of temperature profiles of PCB´s with different assembly density.
