Design of reliable aerospace system architecture

Schäfer, Lukas Matthias January 2018 (has links)
Reliability and redundancy of safety-critical network systems is a paramount issue in system engineering. Be it in evaluating existing network systems or solving optimization problems for designing network systems, it is important to consider reliability and redundancy. This dissertation is in collaboration with AIRBUS Group, France, and they are very interest in the optimal design of safety-critical aircraft architecture systems which have to consider reliability and redundancy. To address the problem of optimally designing such systems, we chose to focus on one specific aircraft architecture system the door management system. It checks if all doors are properly closed and the cabin has the correct pressure. It is a safety-critical system since it is part of the pressurization system of an aircraft. To optimally design the DMS while considering reliability, a suitable reliability evaluation algorithm is necessary. In this dissertation, we begin by proposing a suitable reliability evaluation algorithm for a type of non series-parallel network system which includes the DMS and which can be used in an optimization model. The reliability evaluation algorithm is based on a simplification of the probability principle of inclusion-exclusion formula for intersections of unions. The simplification exploits the presence of many repeated events and has many fewer terms, which significantly reduces the number of operations needed. We compare its computational efficiency against the sum of disjoint products method KDH88 for a simple artificial example and for the DMS. Afterwards, we introduce the first MILP model for the DMS with k-redundancy. As the model is too difficult to be solved efficiently by standard MILP solvers, we discuss the issues of solving the model with general solving methods such as branch-and-bound and branch-and-price. We introduce specialized branching rules and new heuristics to solve the DMS problem with k-redundancy more efficiently and show results of computational tests which compare the specialized solving algorithms with general solving algorithms for example instances of the DMS problem. Lastly, we discuss the problems of considering reliability in MI(N)LP models for the DMS and how the new reliability evaluation algorithm can be used. In this discussion, we give different MI(N)LP models for the DMS problem with redundancy and reliability. Moreover, we propose a new heuristic for the DMS problem with redundancy and reliability. It is based on branch-and-bound, the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition and on the new reliability evaluation algorithm. We show results of computational tests of the new heuristic for example instances of the DMS problem and discuss its validity.

The implementation of the integrated quality management system as an instrument of performance management in Lebowakgomo circuit,Limpopo Province.

Letsoalo, Tshione Jan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPA)--University of Limpopo, 2009. / The democratic political breakthrough of 1994 in South Africa intensified debate on the delivery of quality public education among the teaching fraternity. This culminated in the promulgation of education legislation such as the South African Schools Act of 1996, the Education Employment Act of 1998 and finally the Collective Agreement Number 8 of 2003, which contains a section on the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS).This was an attempt by the Department of Education to enhance the development of educators. The main purpose of the IQMS is to determine educators’ competence, to assess their strengths and areas in need of further development. What triggered the research was the fact that the Department of Education and teachers’unions were always at loggerheads regarding the implementation of the IQMS. This made the researcher investigate the feasibility, successes and shortcomings of the implementation of the IQMS. The researcher used questionnaires, interviews and a document study for the collection of data. The results indicated that the purpose, aim and objectives as enshrined in the Collective Agreement Number 8 of 2003 had not been realised in the implementation of the IQMS within Lebowakgomo circuit in Limpopo Province. Instead of being developed, educators were left demoralised and confused. The IQMS had lost its meaning in the sense that the monetary aspects were over-emphasized at the expense of the development aspects. The professional development of educators was ignored by the Department of Education, as it did not make in-service training or departmental support in any form available. The departmental officials never visited schools to effect the whole school evaluation required by Collective Agreement Number 8. Thus, educators simply completed the IQMS forms without proper evaluation just for the sake of the 1% salary increase. Lack of support by the Department of Education had indeed put the implementation of the IQMS in a crisis. Finally, recommendations were made. The key recommendation was the amendment of Collective Agreement No. 8 of 2003 so that the Development Support Groups are restructured. Furthermore, the review should take on board a reduction of the instruments that make up the IQMS. This is an attempt to streamline the IQMS and make it user-friendly.

The impact of the performance management system (PMS) on service delivery in Mokopane Reginal Hospital Limpopo Province

Chauke, Malose William January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (MPA.) --University of Limpopo, 2009 / The study investigated the impacts of performance management system on service delivery in Mokopane Regional hospital. The study moved from the premise that Performance Management System in Mokopane Regional Hospitals is not well managed. The investigation however revealed that efforts are being made to implement performance management system although some essential improvements are inevitable required. It also probed the implementation of the performance management system within the ambit of the determined policies and procedure manual for the hospital. The challenges experienced are due to the failure of the line managers and supervisors in understanding the essence of the system. The implementation of the system often results in biasness and other performance unrelated factors. In many instances, other factors (such as subjectivity at the expense of objectivity) are unrelated to high performance rates. The study makes a recommendation on how alignment can be made to ensure that the system become more effective.

Modulbaserad webbutveckling

Nording, Kristoffer, Groth, Magnus January 2008 (has links)

Obstacles when facing ISO 14001 EMS implementation for organizations in developing countries : A case study about Stora Enso’s agro-forestry project in Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic

de Joussineau, Henrik January 2012 (has links)
Today many global dilemmas are stemming from organizations’ business activities. In addition, many corporations’ have realized the importance to aspire a green-public image in combination with cutting possible liability costs. Therefore, many companies are interested to participate in the attempts of reducing the impacts related to their business activities. However, at the same time organizations are facing many constraints in the transformation towards environmentally aware and responsible organizations. Therefore, companies often strive to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) in order to achieve organizational guidance when establishing, developing and reviewing their business practices towards both corporate and environmental goals. The theories discussed in this master thesis discloses that the implementation process of an EMS often requires a cultural revolution in organizations, which can be a challenge especially for companies present in developing countries, where environmental issues often are marginalized due to low levels of environmental awareness and weak institutions. The purpose of this master thesis identifies potential obstacles in facing ISO 14001 EMS for Stora Enso’s agro-forestry project in Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the efforts that would stimulate the adoption facing ISO 14001 EMS. This was analyzed through a combination of a qualitative text analysis of scientific papers and a case study with eight semi-structured interviews with managers from Stora Enso Lao Co., Ltd. This study points out limited availability of support and resources, unclear policies, constrained participation and communication, inadequate knowledge about environmental management and ISO 14001 EMS as the potential obstacles for Stora Enso Lao Co., Ltd to tackle. Therefore, in order to stimulate the adoption of ISO 14001 EMS the potential efforts suggested in this master thesis are more money in order to promote environmental training and organizational changes in terms of increased participation of employees and communication between internal and external stakeholders.
