A psychological enquiry into the processes that culminate in positive viewing experiences and subsequent audience loyalty to a soap opera

De Kock, Jani 05 August 2010 (has links)
The research was based on a secondary analysis of a qualitative market research study conducted for the SABC on the soap opera Isidingo. The data used in the study includes 10 focus groups, five diaries of loyal soap opera viewers who were asked not to watch Isidingo for a week and keep a record of their experience, a focus group conducted with these viewers after the completion of the deprivation exercise, the market researcher’s field notes, the market research report and the academic researcher’s own reflective diary. The analysis was conducted within a hermeneutic phenomenological interpretive framework. A model for the psychological processes that culminate in positive viewing experiences and audience loyalty to a soap opera is presented. The model illustrates how viewers use soap world knowledge and real world knowledge to interpret the characters and storylines of soap operas and that the degree of enjoyment the viewer experiences from viewing, is dependant on the quality of the mental models formed of these respective components. The role that transportation, realism, social influences and timeslot play in the engagement process is also defined. The study illustrates a hermeneutic phenomenological research pathway for qualitative research and demonstrates how market research can be explicated for academic gain. Pesquisa etnográfica em marketing / Ethnographic research in marketing

Beatriz de Castro Sebastião Pereira 15 August 2008 (has links)
Consumer behavior studies entail complex situations that are not simple to understand by quantitative research techniques. Recently there is an enhancement in the use of qualitative methods to help interpret the individual and the group in their behaviors. In business and marketing researchers with qualitative work are increasingly using techniques, and methods that are common in sociology, anthropology, and psychology which have suitable developments to these areas of knowledge. Ethnography originated from anthropology and sociology with group approaches seems to be a good tool to marketing studies. This work discusses how ethnography was originated and developed as a research methodology in anthropology and to show how its use was extended to other areas of knowledge, specifically in marketing. The evolution of ethnography in the academic and applied research universes is emphasized, as well as how the methodology was adapted to be used in consumer behavior studies. The study focus on the uses and limitations of ethnographic research in marketing. This is made by an essay based on analytical and descriptive bibliographic research, complemented by in depth interviews with professionals that use or know the methodology applied to marketing. The conclusion is that the method is adequate in marketing research if applied with methodological rigor. This kind of research has the advantage of revealing why some behaviors related to the reference group occur, what is not possible with other research approaches. The methodology presents more benefits when the consumer behavior is strongly related with cultural characteristics of the group that the consumer belongs.

Competitive market research and product design

WANG, Haixiu 21 November 2014 (has links)
To learn the uncertainty of customer preference on the attribute of new product, usually a firm needs to do market research. Developing a product on an attribute which is less preferred by customer may lead to a failure. In addition, a firm used to take efforts to design the product. In recent years, we observed a new business model in which the firm does not take effort to design new product, nor does she do market research by herself. She provides rewards to attract outside designers to design new product. Some designers may take effort and design products based on their private information of customer preference. The firm receives designs with different quality and attribute, she chooses one to produce. By solving this game model, we get the equilibrium quality of the design offered by each designer based on their private cost parameter. And we obtain the following insights: When the market size is too small, the firm gives nothing to designers; when the market size is sufficiently big, the firm only gives reward to the designer whose design is produced; otherwise the firm gives both rewards to participated designers and the designer whose design is produced. We find that when the market size is big enough or the disutility is high enough, the new business model dominates the benchmark business model. When both the disutility and market size are small enough, the firm prefers the benchmark business model. And the relative attractiveness of new business model versus benchmark model keeps the same when the market size is small enough. The impact of extra reward on relative attractiveness of new business model versus benchmark model increases with extra reward. When the extra reward is high enough, the firm always prefers the new business model.
