Integration of material circularity in product design / Intégration de la circularité des matériaux en conception

Dwek, Mauricio 12 December 2017 (has links)
In the last decades, many tools have been developed to understand and manage the anthropogenic cycles of materials, with different approaches. Each handles the material flows in society in different ways and each possesses its respective databases that fuel their uses. Yet there seems to be no common ground of communication between design activities and cycling activities, as well as their respective stakeholders, which hinders the information exchanges required for a proper management of discarded products (and their materials). This thesis provides two original contributions to circular product design: a tool for the integration of material circularity in product design and a framework to characterize material cycling networks. The tool is composed of a multi-criteria indicator for circular material value that is used in the Design for Material Circularity method. The framework is based on an extensive literature review enhanced by industry experts’ interviews and provides a basis for data collection and knowledge capitalization on cycling activities. The open-loop recycling networks of eight materials, from the three main material classes, are characterized using this framework (steel, aluminium, copper, precious metals, specialty metals, rare earth elements, plastics and glass). Two case studies detail the deployment of these contributions. The first focuses on the optimal choice of material and end-of-life scenario for a 1,5-litre bottle container. The second is aimed at identifying material circularity hotspots and ideal end-of-life scenarios for a vehicular lithium-ion battery pack.

Can you trust your model? A showcase study of validation in 13C metabolic flux analysis

Sundqvist, Nicolas January 2019 (has links)
Cellular metabolism is one of the most fundamental systems for any living organisms, involving thousands of metabolites and reactions that forms large interconnected metabolic networks. Proper and comprehensive understanding of the metabolism in human cells has been a field of research for a long time. One of the key parameters in understanding the metabolism are the metabolic fluxes, which are the rates of conversion of metabolic intermediates. Currently, one of the main approaches for determining these fluxes is metabolic flux analysis (MFA), in which isotope-labelled compounds are introduced into the system and measured. Mathematical models are then used to calculate a prediction of the systems flux configuration. However, the current paradigm of MFA lack established methods for validating that a model can accurately predict quantities for which there are no experimental data. In this study, a model for the central human metabolism was created and evaluated with regards to the model’s ability to predict a validation dataset. Further, an uncertainty analysis of these predictions were performed with a prediction profile likelihood analysis. This study has conclusively shown that MFA models can be validated against experimental data that the model has never seen before. Additionally, such model predictions were shown to be observable with a well determined prediction uncertainty. These results shows that a systematic validation of MFA models is possible. This in turn allows for a greater trust to be placed in the models, and in any conclusions that are based on such models.

Urban Mining potential in local power grids: Hibernating copper and aluminium in Linköping

Andersson, Simon January 2013 (has links)
Power grids have a high content of metal, mainly copper and aluminium. When old cables reach their end-of-life, or in some way lose their intended purpose, they are usually left lying in their subsurface position. Material no longer used, but not yet discarded as waste, is in a state known as hibernation. Over time there is an accumulation of hibernating cables under ground that potentially could be recovered or “mined”. The aim of this study is to examine the total hibernating metal content of an urban, subsurface power grid, how it is distributed and also what reasons for disconnection are the most common. The focus of the study is the power grid of Linköping. Using a GIS based variant of material flow analysis the hibernating metal stock is examined both in terms of size and spatial distribution. The results of the study show a significant amount of hibernating copper and aluminium; in total 240 tons of metal were identified. By comparing the results with previous studies both similar and differing patterns appear. The main differences lie in the distribution of the stock within the city which is affected by the characteristics of the cities. When examining the reasons for disconnection continuous repair and maintenance work seems to be the most common reason for disconnection of cables. Further studies on how the characteristics of a city affects the formation of hibernating metal stocks in the infrastructure are suggested.

YOU CAN EAT OFF THE COUNTER I WIPED IT DOWN THIS MORNING

Kain, Jessica 15 May 2012 (has links)
Alternative to meeting a calculus of quality roundness and curves are everywhere. Peaches, pinks, browns, ochres, greens. Klein Blue. --------- An experiment like a party; the hows and whys of picking bedfellows yields a list of possibilities— iterations of better, advantages in flesh volume. Inventory whittled down to give us stories, aspirations, allegiances. --------- Just to see it and touch it. Build in different ways, depending. Grow, cover, carve, cast—let for flexibility. Limbs in one direction sawed off, turned round, glued back on. If it looks like two more ways of how I want it there’s more work to be done.

Boutique Hotel: Telling a Story of Place Through Design

Miller, Lauren 28 April 2011 (has links)
One of the most exciting aspects of traveling is the ability to, for a short time, experience what life is like in a different part of the world. Whether traveling fifty miles away from home or to another continent, cultures, landscapes, and the many nuances of day-to-day life change. The beauty of travel comes from curiosity, exploration, and discovery. It’s that moment when your heart skips a beat and your mind fills with pure delight because you’ve just discovered something new about the world that you never knew before. Another part of the traveling experience is having a place to stay at night. While there are many options, over the past decade, the boutique hotel has grown in popularity. Boutique hotels are known for being small and they distinguish themselves as luxurious and unique in addition to providing premium services and amenities for their guests. This thesis begs the question; can design be used in such a way that an establishment, such as a boutique hotel, can begin to signify more than just a collection decorated rooms so that it contributes to the story being told with respect to place? Through research and personal experience I have found that most small hotels that fit the definition of a boutique hotel do not market themselves as such while large, chain hotels that do not fit the same definition, do. This can be misleading. Many boutique hotels can offer a unique experience for their guests by differentiating room decor so that every room is different or by creating an elegant and intimate lobby or dining experience, however, none have demonstrated a direct connection between the hotel and the context in which it resides. The Power Plant at Lucky Strike, located at 2700 East Cary Street, will serve as the building for this project. The building was originally constructed in 1930 for the purpose of providing power to the neighboring Lucky Strike building which was used as a cigarette factory. The building is in a prime location and situated at the end of the historic and popular Shockoe Bottom strip with Church Hill to the north and the James River just south. With the building’s original shell still intact, my goal is to create a hotel experience that is unique in the sense that it too, will help to continue to tell Richmond’s story.

Bicycle Season

Hughes, Kevin Thomas 05 August 2010 (has links)
In this paper I will thoroughly analyze the thesis film, Bicycle Season, as it relates to specific areas of film production. The goal is to determine the effectiveness of specific approaches to narrative filmmaking, when the intention of the narrative to portray believable human behavior in moments of dramatic conflict. I will discuss this thesis from the point of conception on a screenwriting level; analyze the steps along the way as they relate to film production, and conclude at the point of final screening to an audience. Direct feedback from audience members in test screenings will serve as a measurement of achievement of said goals for the narrative.
