Orientador: Ubiratan D'Ambrosio / Banca: Eduardo Sebastiani Ferreira / Banca: Bernadete Ap. The present work is a research about the A'uwẽ/Xavante's knowledge and practices generation, systematization and diffusion process, starting from Danhono people's main ritual celebration. That is a qualitative nature investigation, under the theoretical / methodological point of view, inserted in the presuppositions of the Ethnomathematics program, in the "dambrosiana" aspect which dialogues transdisciplinarily with knowledge different areas. In that aspect, we prioritized the political and anthropological aspects relating them to the mathematics cultural aspects and to Freire's political and pedagogical concepts. During the research development we tried to approach the A'uwẽ/Xavante's knowledge, practices and way of living, starting from the myths, rites and ceremonies celebrated in the (Danhono) adolescents' formation and self-formation process - the Wapté and Azarudu which belonged to the Nozö'u age group in the period of 2006-2010 in the villages belonged to Pimentel Barbosa Indigenous Land. In this direction, the ethnographic character method was widely used, attempting to highlight the mathematical elements related to the A'uwẽ/Xavante people's myths, rites and ceremonies. For the corpus composition, we stayed in the researched communities for 12 months, accompanying the ceremonial and daily activities. Through this familiarity, we tried to understand as the myths, rites and ceremonies are articulated with the people's mathematical knowledge. Unfolding that investigation, we have the A'uwẽ/Xavante's knowledge and practices theoretical/ methodological/epistemological vision construction, up from its functioning in the culture interior / Doutor

Revisão taxonômica das espécies sulamericanas de ermitões do gênero Pagurus Fabricius, 1775 (Anomura: Paguridae): análises morfológicas e moleculares / Taxonomic review of South American species of hermit crabs of the genus Pagurus Fabricius, 1775 (Anomura:Paguridae): morphological and molecular analysis

Campillay, Nicole Alice Olguín 16 April 2012 (has links)
The genus Pagurus is a heterogeneous taxon of hermit crabs, with worldwide distribution which was described more than two hundred years ago. Systematics of the group is complex and with a long history of taxonomic rearrangements. Thus current classification accounts for inclusion of many new species and splitting-off of some of the original species in order to establish new genera. Because of the extensive distribution of the species that conform this taxon it was necessary to restrict the aim of this study. Thus I evaluated the taxonomic status of the species found in the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of South America using a combination of both morphologic and molecular analyses (16S rDNA and Histona 3). The taxonomic analysis showed high morphological variation among all the 21 examined species. The analyzed species seemed to perfectly fit four out of the eleven morphologically pre-established groups of Pagurus. Furthermore I provide morphological characters that define one of these groups. Additionally, I included a key to aid in the identification of all the target species. Independent analysis of the molecular data showed contrasting results. The mitochondrial gene was the most variable and thus the most informative, providing a clearer hypothesis of the internal relationships among members of Pagurus. Therefore, both 16S and H3 analyses were in general agreement with the morphology. Thus, the resultant molecularly based topologies reflected some of the groups previously proposed. It is important to point out that all the included species belonging to the provenzanoi group were clustered together separated from other clades within Pagurus. At the same time, the analysis with the gen H3 showed Propagurus gaudichaudii clustered within Pagurus, thus questioning the taxonomic validity of Propagurus. As I only included one of the five species of the genus, it is obviously necessary to include other the species contained in this taxon, as well as some other genes in order to definitely solve the taxonomic status of Propagurus.

Max Reger's variations and fugue on an original theme Op.73 : issues of musical structure, performance practice and interpretation

Keventsidou, Eleni January 2016 (has links)
The thesis investigates Max Reger's Variations and Fugue on an Original Theme Op. 73, demonstrates the refinement of Reger's composition, and underlines his connection to the great performer Karl Straube. His musical language, dynamic markings and technical problems regarding the tempo, registration and acoustics will be examined by an actual performance in Canterbury Cathedral. Several issues such as cathedral acoustics, mechanical or pneumatic actions and choice of tempi have underpinned this study. Within each variation, the characteristics and techniques of Reger's compositions express his exceptional connection with the art of fugue and, of course, the use of variation technique in the rest of his organ works. The long Introduction falls into five clear sections and is, followed by the wistful mood and resignation of the Original Theme, where the great role of the third bar is often quoted in the course of the variations. Due to the all-pervading chromaticism Op. 73 gives the impression of being completely pantonal. Canterbury Cathedral organ's electro-pneumatic action and acoustics are close to the Leipzig Sauer instrument, and it seems well capable of meeting the challenges of control, polyphonic harmony, mystery and chromatic moods of Op. 73. Approaching the interpretation of Reger's highly demanding Variations and Fugue on an Original Theme Op. 73 through formal analysis and the complicated background of early twentieth century performance practice will be the final goal of the live performance.

Cultures of forecasting : volatile and vulnerable nature, knowledge, and the future of uncertainty

Bobbette, Adam January 2018 (has links)
Adam Bobbette Cultures of Forecasting: Volatile and Vulnerable Nature, Knowledge, and the Future of Uncertainty Summary This dissertation is a cultural history and ethnography of volatile nature forecasting. It looks at the ways that the future of nature is known in highly unpredictable contexts through a broad history of modernist nature forecasting and an ethnography of state scientists, shamans, and a sultans retinue on the active volcano, Mount Merapi, Indonesia. The project aims to understand how practices of forecasting generate futures, mobilize, and organise anticipation, how time is known, and populations governed. It looks at the way that publics emerge through forecasting technologies, and how futures and nature-culture relations are contested. It follows the practices of scientists in volcano and tsunami observatories, in planes tracking tropical storms, and bunkers dug into active volcanoes; at how instruments and technologies such as seismographs, windows, globes, speakers, and electrical tomography, mediate and transform relations with nature, the future, and governance. It considers too, the role of architecture, shamanism, and the state in appropriating and governing uncertainty. By following the fieldwork of geophysicists and volcanologists in observatories and the edge of the caldera of Mount Merapi, as well as spirit possession practices, and the ritual offerings of a sultan, I demonstrate how practices of forecasting are making contested futures lived in the present, and forging infrastructures and tools for their longevity. Forecasting, I demonstrate, is a cultural technique that negotiates the porous borders between the human, nature, and the future.

A total of 383 blood serum samples were collected from free-ranging cattle (78 samples), water buffalo (39 samples), sheep (139 samples), domestic (63 samples) and wild pigs (49 samples) and deers (15 samples), living in the Pantanal (Nhecolândia region) of Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. All the investigated species, excepting deer, showed positive animais to FMDV antigens. The AGID detected a total of 47 (12,3%) positive animais for VIA antigen, mostly of them were free-living cattle and buffalo. The LPD-EUSA identified 175 (45,7%) serum samples as reactive to FMDV antigens, specially among cattle, buffalo and sheep. The predominant reactivity to FMDV antigens, characterized by the higher number of positives and the higher antibodies titers, were detected to C3 Indaial strain, particularly among the free-Iiving cattle. Buffaloes and pigs showed, in turn, a prominent reactivity to A24 Cruzeiro strain, while sheep reacted more to 01 Campos strain, though buffalo and sheep serum samples had higher antibody titers to C3 Indaial strain. The highest frequency of positive animais to VIA antigen were found in free-ranging cattle, whose age ranged from 12 to 36 months, contrasting to the results of LPB-EUSA that detected the highest rate of positives in the older bovines (~36 months). The older animais from other species demonstrated, in both serological tests, the highest frequency of positivity... (Complete abstract, access undermentioned eletronic address) / Mestre

January 2018 (has links)
From this understanding, it is defended here the thesis that the rural area of Cáceres is diversified, dynamic and multiple. In search of this evidence, it was defined as the main goal of this composition, to rebuild the process of organization of the agricultural area of Cáceres, trying to demonstrate its current structure based on the predominant presence of extensive livestock and on the emergence of new activities, that is, the diversified character of its rural area. In order to carry out the research, the mixed method of John Creswell was used as central methodology, in which the qualitative method is used as the main one, and the quantitative method is inside it, supported by bibliographical research, interviews, questionnaires, fieldwork and deep reflections. With the development of the research it was recognized the remarkable presence of livestock and the intense concentration of land. However, a diversified rural area is also observed, in which, very distinct realities are found, ranging from rural establishments smaller than 10 hectares to others with more than 1000 hectares; the extensive livestock, predominant in some areas, in counterpoint agricultural polyculture in others; the family wage labor and the presence of livestock farming and non-agricultural activities such as tourism and ag... Values of higher popular music education : perspectives from the UK

Parkinson, Tom January 2014 (has links)
In the 23 years since the first undergraduate popular music degree programme opened in the United Kingdom, the academic discipline of popular music has burgeoned to encompass over 160 programmes delivered across the higher education sector, by private institutions, Royal-chartered conservatoires, post-92 universities and Russell Group universities. This doctoral research project seeks to understand the values underpinning and informing educational practice in this growing academic discipline. It proceeds from an understanding of higher education and popular music as two highly complex domains in their own right, and from the proposition that values inhering at their nexus- Higher Popular Music Education- derive from and are borne by multiple human, institutional and disciplinary sources, and bear the trace of socio-cultural, economic and historical contexts related to each domain. It takes an inductive approach to a multiple-case study of four popular music degree programmes at different higher education institutions across the United Kingdom. Acknowledging from the outset the impossibility of identifying a conclusive ‘roster’ of itemisable values, this study draws on a combination of institutional literature, semi-structured interview and field observation data to explore the interplay of musical, educational and other values within the educational message systems of pedagogy, curriculum, institution, assessment, lifestyle and market. Analysis of the data suggested that seemingly unrelated values such as, for example, those relating to musical aesthetics and social justice, could in fact be oppositional in practice, resulting in surprising tensions and impacting on such areas as curricula and student lifestyles. Moreover, values enshrined in policy, or perceived by interviewees to be dominant within the higher education sector, appeared often to be at odds with individuals’ personal opinions regarding the value of knowledge and education, or with what they saw to be the core values of popular music as an art form. This interdisciplinary study sits across the research fields of music education, the sociology of higher education and popular music studies, and makes original contributions to knowledge in each of these fields.

The Melao Virus (MELV) strains, BE AR 8033 e BE AR 633512 were isolated from lots of Ochlerotatus (Ochlerotatus) scapularis mosquitoes, in Belém- PA (1955) and Alta Floresta do Oeste- RO (2000), Brazil, respectively. The aim of this study was to carry out molecular characterization of the MELV strains BE AR 633512 and BE AR 8033 and to describe the histopathologic, biochemistry and immunological changes in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). Hamsters showed susceptibility to these MELV strains. The viremia produced in hamsters by BE AR 633512 strain occurred between 3 and 6 days post-infection (dpi.), and for the BE AR 8033 occurred only in the 2nd dpi. Neutralizing antibodies for both strains were initially detected on the 5th dpi. and remained up to the 30 dpi. The biochemistry markers AST, ALT and blood urea nitrogen showed values statistically significants among inoculated animals with both VMEL strains, while creatinine value it was only altered by BE AR 633512 strain. Histopathologic changes were observed in the central nervous system, liver, kidney, and spleen of the hamsters, and infection was confirmed by immunohistochemical assay in all them. Strain BE AR 633512 caused more intense tissue damage showing increases virulence and pathogenicity than BE AR 8033 strain. The genetic analysis of the N, Gn and Gc genes revealed that for N and Gn genes, the BE AR 8033 and prototype strain (TRVL 9375) are genetically more closed related, and for the Gc gene, the BE AR 8033 and BE AR 633512 strains are more related. BE AR 633512 strain showed increased genetic variability, mainly in the Gn gene, were several aminoacid changes were observed, but the Gc mutations should be responsible for the increased virulence for hamsters.
