Music therapy: A bridge to communication for familial caregivers of persons with dementia

Macgregor, Ruth A. 01 January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Caregivers of persons with dementia often struggle to sustain meaningful communication and reciprocal emotional connection due to the deterioration in functional memory and the resulting diminishment of social-interactive abilities in their loved one. The very personhood of the care recipient is also often compromised by the reduction in those socio-communicative capacities, which in turn, can impact the function of the caregiving relationship. Emotional, as well as social isolation can increase for the familial caregiver just as it often does for the care recipient. This thesis examines the impact that an individualized, home-based music therapy program had on the emotional connection and reciprocal interactions of four familial caregiving dyads. Data were collected over a month-long period using qualitative research methods including pre and post interview, a caregiver's journal log, researcher's journal log, participation, direct observation, and the observations of the caregiver respondents themselves as they engaged in the therapeutic process with their familial care recipient. Through a cross-case analysis of data collected, four main themes emerged to reflect the experiences of the participants. These were: 1) a longing for reciprocity, 2) the experience of emotional reciprocity, 3) the emergence of personhood through shared musical experiences, and 4) perseverance in the pursuit of meaningful communication. Sub-themes, and themes relating to the researcher's participatory experiences are also included. Implications for further research are discussed.

The effects of peer versus therapist mediated music improvisation groups on quality of social interaction between adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and general education peers

Steele-Abundez, Carmen F. 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of music-based peer mediation interventions to enhance the quality of social interaction for high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Specifically, it assessed whether adolescents with ASD demonstrate a difference in group participation, eye contact, and smile with peers within a music therapist mediated or a peer mediated instrumental music improvisation group. Two groups consisting of one high school student with ASD and one or two general education peers were evaluated using an alternating treatment design with an initial baseline phase. Partial interval recording was used to measure social interaction within each condition. Both students demonstrated a high level of group participation in music sessions. One student demonstrated eye contact and group participation behavior that was distinctly higher than was demonstrated during baseline. Social validity reports suggested that both students with ASI) were more motivated to participate in the music groups than in other structured social activities at school. There was no marked difference observed in level of group participation demonstrated by cither student with ASD between the music therapist mediated condition and the peer mediated condition. Implications for future research and clinical applications arc discussed.

CURRENT AND FUTURE PRIORITIES OF CULTURAL MUSIC THERAPY KNOWLEDGE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: AN E-DELPHI SURVEY

Kwan, Melanie S, 0000-0001-6179-4746 05 1900 (has links)
The development of music therapy is uneven across five of 11 southeast Asian (SEA) countries where there are professional organizations or university training programs. There is little research about music therapists’ music and culture responsive (MCR) clinical practices in SEA. MCR is the awareness of culture and ability to musically engage with others as cultural beings. The aim of this study was therefore to better understand how SEA music therapists’ cultural understanding informs their professional perspectives and clinical approaches. Seven themes emerged, namely Respectful acceptance, Adaptation and Asian contextualization, Shared commonalities in diversity, Ways of being, Music in the culture of health, Music therapy within the culture of Science, and (Lack of) Awareness. The Delphi (electronic) technique was used to gain the consensus of experts as to current rankings and future projections about the relevance of cultural music therapy understanding. The top ranked MCR topics and skillsets which were relevant for a music therapy curriculum for the 21st century southeast Asian student included Supportive resources and related skills (33%), Population specific knowledge (22%) and Clinical Music Skills, MT approaches (11%), Professional issues (11%), and Repertoire (11%). This information serves as a baseline snapshot of the music therapy profession in SEA and may be potentially useful in planning professional music therapy education, training, and supervision. More importantly, it sets the context for dialogue about cultural music therapy practices in SEA and highlights the need to amplify the collective southeast Asian voice globally. / Music Therapy

Psycho-educational guidelines for the use of music in a group anger management programme for children in residential care in Gauteng

De Villiers, Belinda 11 1900 (has links)
This study explored the utilisation of a music anger management technique as an effective therapeutic aid in addressing the problems that children in residential care have in managing and expressing their anger. A literature review was conducted which provided evidence that music can be a helpful tool in teaching children appropriate ways to manage their anger. An empirical study was conducted and five participants were chosen through a sampling process. Background information of the five participants was obtained and data analyses were presented from the data gathered in the pre- and post-assessments processes before and after the implementation of the music anger management technique. The data that gave rise to several empirical findings were then reduced. From the empirical study, it can be concluded that the music anger management technique can be used effectively to improve inappropriate anger management. Getting firsthand experience of the implementation of the music anger management technique led me to derive psycho-educational guidelines, which can assist the educational psychologist in using the music anger management technique in addressing unmanaged anger in children in residential care. / Further Teacher Education / M.Ed. According to this study, music can fulfill an emotional and a cognitive roll. A pleasant emotional climate for therapy can be created and stimulate the client's thoughts. With this study it was possible to give guidelines for therapeutic applications of music. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Voorligting)
