Envoltórios circunstelares de estrelas jovens de massa intermediária / Circumstellar envelopes of intermediate mass young stars

Vieira, Rodrigo Georgetti 20 September 2012 (has links)
O objetivo deste trabalho de doutorado é analisar sob vários aspectos a estrutura, a composição e a evolução destes ambientes circunstelares. / Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) objects are intermediate mass (2 -10 Msun) stars in the pre-main sequence. Some of their properties remain not well understood to date. Only a full multi-wavelength study is able to reveal a reasonable scenario for their circumstellar material. The purpose of the present work is to study the structure, composition and evolution of these circumstellar environments. To address this issues, the sample of HAeBe candidates detected by the Pico dos Dias Survey (Vieira et al., 2003) was adopted. To avoid the contamination by more evolved stars, we developed an analysis based on two-color diagrams, extinction values and spectral features. The chemistry of the circumstellar dust was studied based on Infrared Space Observatory spectra available to our sample. The silicate feature around 10 micron revealed evolutionary information of the circumstellar material. The evolutionary stage of the more embedded sources was determined by estimates of their envelope masses. This study indicates almost all of this sub-sample to be in the intermediate phase between Class 0 (Menv>>Msun) and Class I (Menv<Msun). Mid-infrared images, retrieved from archive data, introduced morphological constraints to the orientation and extension of the disk associated to PDS340. The available observations for several wavelengths revealed some characteristics of the structure and evolution of the circumstellar material associated to HAeBe stars. The perspective of the development of a complete model, which encompasses all the available data, is described in the conclusion of this work.

Study of the frequency response method applied on localization and quantification of leakage by pressure and discharge monitoring in water supply main pipes.

Michele Roberta Pedroso dos Santos Monteiro 04 October 2006 (has links)
This work presents some methods for leak location, from de most elementary techniques and equipments, as visual inspection and mechanical geophone, until using sophisticated noise data-logger and computational modeling. Some of these techniques are very well issued and largely used by water companies, but others play excellent promises for the improvement of leak control in systems of water supply. The pattern of the frequency response diagram is used for leak location and quantification, with special application in drinking water pipelines. The frequency response technique developed by Lee et al. (2005) is studied in details, including the impact produced by the leak on the frequency response diagram. The ways to obtain the frequency response diagram, by using mathematical and computational models or necessary field data survey, are also discussed.

No. of bitstreams: 1 ROGÉRIO ANTÔNIO ALVES.pdf: 1543199 bytes, checksum: 74bdd4f9fd6ecbfbe6da822216ba1ff4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-23 / Unveiling the historical plot woven about the local and regional leads us to find of the minutiae that makes us understand a range of issues related to an even broader field. When we look at the history of the city of Uberlândia, in the state of Minas Gerais, we observe a range of objects, facts and issues. It’s from this reality that we proposed here to understand the course taken by the Roman Catholic Church, and within it, its action in the political, social and economic environment under the aegis of modernization. From this perspective, the purpose is to understand the process of overthrowing the old main church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the construction of the new main church of Saint Thérèse of Child Jesus and the Holy Face, that happens between the years of 1930 and 1941 under the sign of the new (progress). From the building of the Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, the point is to visualize the greater context of history between the macro and the micro, which imposes on the Catholic Church institution a new posture in the social environment. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the conjuncture of modernity (steamroller) brings to society new experiences that will make the Church, at first sight, to see them as strange, but with the passage of time they settle themselves like a new vision in the practice of this Institution. Our discussions go through the theoretical-methodological perspective in the field of cultural history, in the discussions about the history and city proposed by Leonardo Benevolo and José Evaldo de Mello Doin. The documentation used in this work, newspapers, minutes and books of tombo was found mostly in the public archive of Uberlândia and in the collections of the Diocese of Uberlândia. From the discussions made, it’s perceived that the ideal of progress that permeates the Uberlandian society in the proposed period, makes the Catholic Church to follow the same, collaborating with the erasure and forgetting of its own history, intending to modernize itself. It’s also verified that the Catholic Church established a dialogical relation with the political instance in order to demarcate its space in the center of the city of Uberlândia.

Route de la soie, route de la création : rencontres, frontières, contacts, croisements / Silik road and the road of art creation : meetings, borders, contacts, interweaving

Fulati, Tayierjiang 14 March 2017 (has links)
Relying on my personal artistic practice, this thesis analyzes the identity, origin, the value and the place of the "band" in the art in weaving through the old Silk Road. The analysis of my artistic creation, my culture, my multiple identities and my influences in the light of the legacy of the Silk Road and the road of the creation. The crossing of the Silk Road is structured around four themes : the meeting, contact. The crossing and the border. The research led me on a messianic trip, in the aim of finding answers to the questions that concern me : how the Silk Road influences artistic creation, is it a source of creativity? How can it be in the works of contemporary artists? How it emerges on my artistic creation? To answer these questions, I presented my band as a figure, which binds me to my multiple origins. In the first chapter I will analyze the concept of identity through the portraits of the band, then I will look into the notion of border visible and invisible. In the third chapter, I will analyze the touch, the taste and the crossing with the Silk Road. Finally, I will examine the context of interior landscapes and I will try to demonstrate the hidden legacy as well as the secrets of the local art impregnated in the culture of our region through crosses and cultural mixes.

Computational Studies of Alkane C-H Functionalization by Main-Group Metals

Gustafson, Samantha Jane 01 July 2016 (has links)
The most efficient homogeneous catalysts for hydroxylation of light alkanes utilize transition metals in superacid solvent and operate by tandem electrophilic C-H activation/metal-alkyl (M-R) functionalization. An emerging alternative strategy to transition metals is the use of high-oxidation state main-group metals (e.g. TlIII, PbIV, IIII) that hydroxylate light alkanes. This dissertation reports density-functional theory calculations that reveal the mechanisms, reactivity, and selectivity of TlIII promoted alkane C-H functionalization in trifluoroacetic acid and TlIII-dialkyl functionalization in water. Calculations reveal that TlIII oxidizes alkanes via a closed-shell C-H activation and M-R functionalization mechanism that is similar to transition-metal C-H functionalization mechanisms. Comparison of TlIII to similar transition metals reveals that while TlIII and transition metals can have similar activation barriers for C-H activation, TlIII M-R functionalization is significantly faster due to a highly polar Tl-C bond and large TlIII/TlI reduction potential. The combination of a moderate C-H activation barrier combined with a low M-R functionalization barrier is critical to the success for TlIII promoted alkane C-H oxidation. The proposed TlIII C-H activation/M-R functionalization mechanism also provides an explanation for ethane conversion to a mixture of ethyl trifluoroacetate and ethane-1,2-diyl bis(2,2,2-trifluoroacetate). The reactivity of TlIII contrasts the lack of alkane oxidation by HgII. The C-H activation transition state and frontier-orbital interactions provide a straightforward explanation for the higher reactivity of TlIII versus HgII. This frontier-orbital model also provides a rationale for why the electron-withdrawing group in EtTFA provides "protection" against overoxidation. Calculations also reveal that TlIII-dialkyl functionalization by inorganic TlIII in water occurs by alkyl group transfer to form a TlIII-monoalkyl complex that is rapidly functionalized.

Die Auswirkungen der medialen Internetnutzung auf die Print-Zeitung - Eine medienlinguistische Analyse / The effects of media internet use on traditional print media

Uhrich, Daniela Brigitte January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of my doctoral thesis entitled "The impacts of medial internet use on traditional print media" was to investigate how German print-media is changing under the impact of online-media. As corpus of research I used the local daily newspaper Mainpost, the national daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and the weekly magazine Spiegel. I was doing research on the front-page stories of the three print-media and compared them among each other in the period between June–August 1999 and June–August 2009. My hypothesis: Considering the increasing competition through free online-media, traditional print-media has to find their own distinguished profile to survive. This objective is preferrable reached through a quality improvement. The reason is that people request to get information in a fast manner by using online-media. They mainly read short articles - longer ones are rarely consumed because of online reading habits. Idealy one receives better researched background stories in the print-media afterwards. Moreover, local newspapers have to concentrate their reporting on regional issues. My examination shows that all newspapers analyzed tend towards the trends mentioned above. However there are some issues in which print-media still has to catch up. Therefore my doctoral thesis not only reflects the empirical reality but also gives concrete advice for journalists. There is no similar empirical study in the field of German linguistics yet. Even though there is research concerning the area of online- and print-media development, there is none referring from one to the other media. There is a lack of current research in the fast developing world of new media. There is also still some research in the field of quantitative examination to be done: One doesn't find a scientific study based on empirical data, that is sufficiently informing about the impact of new media regarding the use of written language in print-media. This deficit in current research was reduced by my thesis. To find out more about the influence of new media use on print-media I combined qualitative and quantitative methods. However I didn't just analyse the language of the texts, but also examined economical and social issues. For that reason this doctoral thesis is an interdisciplinary piece of work, from its subject belonging to the field of media linguistics. This new area of research represents an intersection between linguistics and media science. After realising that my thesis would be an interdisciplinary one, I decided to write it underneath the supervision of the Graduate School of Humanities Würzburg.

Query Execution on Modern CPUs

Zeuch, Steffen 13 July 2018 (has links)
Over the last decades, database systems have been migrated from disk to memory architectures such as RAM, Flash, or NVRAM. Research has shown that this migration fundamentally shifts the performance bottleneck upwards in the memory hierarchy. Whereas disk-based database systems were largely dominated by disk bandwidth and latency, in-memory database systems mainly depend on the efficiency of faster memory components, e.g., RAM, caches, and registers. To encounter these challenges and enable the full potential of the available processing power of modern CPUs for database systems, this thesis proposes four approaches to reduce the impact of the Memory Wall. First, SIMD instructions increase the cache line utilization and decrease the number of executed instructions if they operate on an appropriate data layout. Thus, we adapt tree structures for processing with SIMD instructions to reduce demands on the memory bus and processing units are decreased. Second, by modeling and executing queries following a unified model, we are able to achieve high resource utilization. Therefore, we propose a unified model that enables us to utilize knowledge about the query plan and the underlying hardware to optimize query execution. Third, we need a fundamental knowledge about the individual database operators and their behavior and requirements to optimally distribute the resources among available computing units. We conduct an in-depth analysis of different workloads using performance counters create these insights. Fourth, we propose a non-invasive progressive optimization approach based on in-depth knowledge of individual operators that is able to optimize query execution during run-time. In sum, using additional run-time statistics gathered by performance counters, a unified model, and SIMD instructions, this thesis improves query execution on modern CPUs.

"I want to be the Sun": Tableau as an Embodied Representation of Main Ideas in Science Information Texts

Branscombe, Margaret 26 March 2015 (has links)
In this study I investigated the process drama convention of tableau to mediate for the representation of main ideas in science information texts. My pedagogical goal was to focus on the body as a tool for engaging with information texts and my rationale for this goal was the belief that the body is neglected in classroom learning. The task of creating caused the students to be active and to think of their own and other bodies as signifiers of meaning. The methodology was based on a formative experiment that allowed for changes and modifications to be made in response to the intervention of tableau. Formative and design experiments recognize that classrooms are ecologically complex research sites that are situated in particular cultural and historical contexts. Theories related to cultural historical activity theory (CHAT), expansive and embodied learning frame this research as paradigms that recognize the dialectics between activity and culture and the body in and of the world. In the study tableau is framed as an innovative learning method that disrupts the traditional and historical methods for identifying main idea, such as the annotation of text. Through the disruption of tableau came opportunities to expand notions of literacy and comprehension as well as the traditional associations of drama with fiction texts. The study shows that tableau is a flexible mediating tool that can be applied to the current focus on informational texts and close reading.
