Adolescent Male Dancers' Embodied Realities /

Li, Zihao 08 June 2010 (has links)
This dissertation looks at adolescent male dance students who challenge the dominant perceptions of masculinity by participating in dance, an art form which has been subjected to feminine and homosexual stereotypes. With a multi-methodological approach—qualitative, arts-informed, autobiography, interviews, videotape, and performance—this research investigates and explores the largely unknown realities regarding adolescent male dance students; why they decide to take dance; what makes them continue or stop dancing; how their perceptions of dance are transformed over time; how they feel when they are dancing; the realities they embody in studio and on stage; their message to the public about who they were, who they are, and what they want to be in and through dance. The researcher challenges the socially constructed epistemology that dance is merely an entertainment while exploring the relationship between mind and body; gender, race, and identity; literature and literacy; physical education and dance; the professional and the novice; the hows and the whys; female and male dance educators; dance pedagogy (theory) and curriculum delivering (practice); and the association of homosexuality and heterosexuality in the context of dance and its effect on adolescent male students’ willingness to dance. This study shows that families, friends, teachers, school administrators, dance class environment, media (So You Think You Can Dance), and technology (internet) have all created various levels of impact on adolescent males’ decision to participate in dance at a high school. Data and implication from this research can serve as a catalyst for future studies on adolescent male dance students. Findings can also be applied to dance programs at all levels, curriculum development, and teacher education. This electronic dissertation encompasses graphs, photos, audio and video clips, webpage links, and even a full-length documentary movie to enhance the research finding and maximize the power of a multimodal design (Jewitt & Kress, 2003).

The criminal career profile : a measure of criminal careers

Mallillin, Abigail Zsa-Zsa Capati 30 November 2006 (has links)
The term criminal career is used to describe the course or progress of criminal activity: its onset, duration, termination, severity, and change in severity. Such a term has important implications, given that significant criminal justice, social, and health policies such as crime control, parole, and correctional treatment and management are predicated on achieving the reduction of criminal careers of serious, repeat offenders. Despite its conceptual simplicity, however, criminal career is often treated as having no depth or scope, for example, merely as the number of crimes or length of prison sentence. These indices often give no or little consideration to criminal career parameters and tend to account for only a small portion of the construct of criminal careers. Ideally, a simple metric to measure the onset, duration, termination, severity, and change in severity of a pattern of criminal activities is needed to facilitate the description and measurement of criminal careers of offenders. <p>The Criminal Career Profile (CCP), which uses commonly available criminological information and requires minimal professional skills to execute, can be considered a simple and precise measure of criminal careers. The CCP is a chronological representation on a Cartesian plane of the time in years an offender has spent in prison (y-axis) plotted against the time in years spent out of prison (x-axis) of all incarcerations and time spent in the community. Given that the CCP is a step function, a regression line can be generated. Serious crimes are generally given longer sentences, and more time in than out of prison would generate a steeper regression line. Shallower regression lines result from less time in than out of prison. As such, the CCP regression line can be considered an indication of the seriousness of offending, and the slope or angle of the regression line can be considered a quantitative index of criminal career severity. Larger slopes or angles (used in this Program of Research) suggest more serious criminal careers. Conversely, smaller slopes or angles suggest less serous criminal careers. Taken altogether, the CCP can provide a quantitative measure of criminal careers: its onset (age at first conviction, which is plotted as the first point on a CCP graph), duration (total time in and out of prison since onset), severity (CCP slope/angle), change in severity (change in CCP slope/angle), and termination (end point or when the CCP slope or angle becomes smaller and closer to 0).<p>This Program of Research was done to assess the CCPs validity and utility in measuring offenders criminal career. More specifically, the investigation focused on the seriousness of criminal careers. A number of criteria were used to validate the CCP angles ability to measure criminal career severity. In Study 1, psychopaths and violent recidivists showed a significantly larger CCP angle than nonpsychopaths and violent nonrecidivists, respectively. Finer groupings based on risk (high, medium, and low), a number of risk measures (Psychopathy Checklist Revised, Violence Risk Scale, and Violence Risk Scale Sexual Offender Version), and different types of offenders (i.e. violent, nonviolent, sexual, Dangerous Offenders) were used in Study 2. Two consistent findings across different groups of offenders in Study 2 were CCP angles significantly varied as a function of risk group and correlated with risk ratings. The pattern of results was that larger CCP angles tended to be associated with worse risk groups. In Study 3, both treated offenders and treatment dropouts showed a reduction in CCP angles from pre- to post-treatment. A nonsignificant interaction of group by treatment, however, suggests that post-treatment changes could not be attributed to treatment. Finally, Study 4 showed that CCP angles change with age. Taken altogether, the results of the four studies provided converging evidence for the validity of the CCP as a measure of criminal careers and the CCP angle as a measure of criminal career severity.

Navigating a convergence of influences: athletic and academic identities of Black middle school club basketball players

Smith, Martin P. 17 September 2015 (has links)
Historically and contemporarily the Black male experience has stimulated and provoked meaningful discussions in the realms of sport and academia. Black males are uniquely situated in American society, as they inhabit a liminal existence that oscillates between love and hate. Ladson-Billings (2011) expounds that Black boys are loved in the narrow niches of sport but are often abhorred in academic settings. The majority of research on the athletic and academic identities of Black student-athletes is conducted at the collegiate level in the revenue sports of basketball and football, and the research asserts that the collegiate sport atmosphere renders the two identities as mutually exclusive (Edwards, 1984; Harrison et al., 2011; Singer, 2008). There are studies occurring at the middle school level; however, these studies combine all male athletes into one group and do not distinguish the research participants according to their specific sport participation or racial background (Alfone, 2013; Fuller, Percy, & Bruening, 2013; Gorton, 2010). The few studies that distinguish between race and sport participation are somewhat dated (Mahiri, 1991, 1998; Nasir, 2000, 2008). This study addresses a gap in the literature by focusing solely on elite Black male middle school student-athletes to discover what leads to the seemingly incompatible athletic and academic identities that surface during college. I employed an instrumental case study grounded in Critical Race Theory which investigated and examined the experiences and perspectives of seven elite Black middle school club basketball players. Themes were generated by coding the interview data of all relevant stakeholders such as coaches, players, and parents as well as a thorough analysis of field notes, artifacts, and focus group data. Five themes emerged from the data, Academic Recognition, Athletic Recognition, Career, Racial Expectations, & Time Devoted to Sport and Intellectual Endeavors. This study is significant because it contextualizes the racial, athletic and academic climate of Black male athletes at a crucial time in their identity development. It contributes to the current literature by providing insight and furnishing essential information for parents, coaches and educators in order to bolster and enhance the academic identity and attainment of young Black male basketball players.

Range vs. Register: An Important Distinction in Choral Repertoire for the Adolescent Male

Brown, Charles Paul January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to determine appropriate choral literature for the adolescent male. Historically, scholars have focused on the lowering of the maturing male voice into the newly-formed chest register. During the change process, the male voice is unpredictable and can have a limited range. While a vast amount of repertoire for the adolescent male accommodates this downward progression and anticipates the narrow range, most adolescent boys are, in fact, capable of singing pitches above the chest register.Registers will be identified in this study. Discussion will pertain to registration shifts between chest register, head register, and falsetto in the adolescent male. I will investigate the use of the head register, which is a legitimate and vital component in healthy singing during adolescence. I will then compare registration to the historical knowledge of the male changing voice, which focuses mostly on the range and development of the newly-forming chest register.I will apply the concept of registration to choral repertoire taken from the 2005 and 2007 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) national convention reading session packets. I will identify music that best and least facilitates the use and mixture of head-register and chest-register singing. Music for treble voices in various combinations (SA, SSA, SSAA, etc.) and three-part mixed music (SAB) will be examined. Each category presents a set of advantages and disadvantages for the adolescent male. Specific musical examples will illustrate the discussion. Careful repertoire selection with registration as a criterion is a key factor in unlocking male singing potential during adolescence. Although boys have unpredictable ranges, as it will be shown, registers are constant.

The level of juvenile hormone (JH) in several stages of larval development determines the characteristics of females. Diploid males and females of Melipona quadrifasciata that, in last instar larvae, received topical JH develop external morphological characteristics of queen. This work was based on morphometric data to investigate the effect of JH III in the development of haploid and diploid males of Melipona quadrifasciata and compare morphological characteristics of them with morphological characteristics already known in females of this species. Ten individuals were used for each treatment; workers, natural queens, queens produced from the topical application of JH, natural haploid males, haploid males received application of JH but did not differ, haploid males that received topical application of JH and developed features of queens (QLM - Queen-Like Male), natural diploid males, diploid males that received topical application of JH but did not differ and diploid QLM. The anatomical averages analyzed were: width of compound eyes, width of tibia, length of mouthparts, length of mandible, intertegule distance and interorbit distance. All averages allowed the separation of individuals into groups. However, the lengths of the mouthpart averages were differences most significantly between treatments. Natural queens and queens produced from the effect of JH had similar averages. Diploid and haploid QLM showed average variables with similar size in the natural queens and queens produced from topical application of JH. Workers were more similar to males than the queens in the most averages variables and, in general, the workers presented average size more than queens. Natural diploid and haploid males had close averages, which does not allow visual differentiation of these individuals. The dates confirm that the JH is primarily responsible for the differentiation of specific characteristics of each caste, and, in the high levels of it causes the appearance of the characteristics of queen, independent on genotype. Rainhas naturais e rainhas produzidas a partir do efeito do HJ possuem medidas semelhantes.

But with the onset of another crisis in the capital in mid-1970 and its bearing to the days progress, the social assistance has been recruited as the policy of the Brazilian social protection for "confrontation" and to "eradicate" the ills. This data is supported, especially when viewed as a process of that budget policy. In this sense, the objective of our work is to consider what both sides of that excess spotlight on social welfare policy, which has relied primarily on the riddle of the personifications of capital worldwide. To this end, we chose a critical-bibliographic and documentary that favored a cut of between three years (2005-2007) and socio-territorial space of Paraíba, specifically, the state management. From the theoretical and methodological nature of critical-dialectic, and the contribution of technical and operational physical and digital documents, especially, the Comptroller General of the State (CGE) and Court of the State (ECA), on public finances, mentioned that the back of high budget social assistance via "security income and nutritional security", is the cornerstone to increased degree of human barbarity that we sociometabólico this model of production, given its uninterrupted movement of accumulation and expansion in any compliance.

We intent to glimpse in which measurement the forethoughts of this Brazilian thinker makes of Latin America; if it can be considered a project of identification of the Latin American identity and as such design incorporates the mestizo man as bearer. This present project in Bomfim s work is especially based on the ideas of social parasitism, miscegenation. As an unfoldment of the dissertation, we focused on an analysis of Bomfim s intellectual biography connected with the intellectual discourse of the time. This locates spatially and temporally the Brazilian and foreign interlocutors of Bomfim. In this sense, we identify the streamlines that explicit or implicitly influenced the construction of a distorted conception of Latin America and of the Latin-American and which are refuted in Bomfim s works. Such refutations are the basis for Bomfim s discourse because his narratives are of resistance and his thought is characterized by the defense, as well as attacks the neo-colonization pretensions of both Europe and the United States, regarding Latin America. Finally, the fundamental conceptions that bring Bomfim originality to this discussion were worked; it s specificity and importance, both for the Latin-American identity as for a possible national identity. Herein, in a macro micro relation, Bomfim thinks Latin America from a view point in Brazil. He accentuates the miscegenation, the cultural plasticity and education as the fundaments of his Latin-American identification project.

Influência da infecção por Trypanosoma evansi sobre hormônios do sistema reprodutivo de ratos experimentalmente infectados / Influence of experimental infection with Trypanosoma evansi on reproductive hormones in rats

Faccio, Luciana 04 October 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Infection by Trypanosoma evansi causes various pathological changes in animals, as well as reproductive problems whose pathogenesis is not fully known. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the serum concentrations of reproductive hormones, histopathology and biomarkers of oxidative stress in testicles of rats experimentally infected with T. evansi. Twenty four animals were divided in two groups with 12 animals each. Group A was formed by healthy Wistar rats (uninfected) and group B composed by animals infected with T. evansi. Both groups were divided into two subgroups (n=6) from which were collected serum and testicular fragments on day five and 15 post-infection. A significant reduction (P<0.01) in the levels of LH, FSH, testosterone and estradiol associated to the increase in cortisol levels was observed in serum of infected animals when compared to negative control. Also an increase in the concentrations of nitrite/nitrate (NOx), lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation was observed in the testicles. The histopathology showed testicular degeneration in the infected animals. Based on these results, we can conclude that infection with T. evansi may reduce the reproductive capacity of male and/or inducing infertility in rats, either directly or indirectly.

A Comparison of Perceived Exertion Ratings of Aerobic Dance and Treadmill Performances Among College Age Males and Females

Walker, Nancy D. 08 1900 (has links)
The purposes of the study were to compare ratings of perceived exertion of aerobic dance and treadmill performances under equal work loads and to compare ratings of perceived exertion by males and females in aerobic dance and treadmill work. Subjects were twenty-six college men and women in co-educational conditioning classes. Heart rates were monitored after work bouts and perceived exertion was determined using Borg's RPE scale. Data were analyzed by a two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures. Conclusions of the investigation were: (1) aerobic dance is perceived as less strenuous than the treadmill under equal work loads, and (2) males and females perceive aerobic dance as less strenuous than the treadmill under equal energy bouts.
