Parents of At-Risk Students Reluctance to Using Technological Learning Platforms

Landley Lee, MIchelle J. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Despite school leaders' attempts to implement technology designed to provide resources for parent and student use at home, many parents of at-risk children are reluctant to use the learning platforms. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the meaning of human experiences as they related to parents' reluctance to using learning management systems (LMSs). Elements from Rogers's innovation diffusion theory, Davis's technology acceptance model, and Epstein's parent involvement model were combined for the study's conceptual framework. The research questions addressed the challenges parents encounter with learning platforms; parents' experiences with teachers and schools with regard to training, orientation, and using learning platforms; and parents' feelings about establishing a learning institute to support their LMS use. Six parent participants from a small suburban school district in Southeastern United States who self-disclosed that they used LMS less than 3 times per week and had a child that scored at the beginning level of the mandatory state test were purposefully selected for this study. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed via Moustakas's modified van Kaam method, which uncovered 4 major themes. The findings indicated that parents avoided using LMSs for several reasons, which included parents' lack of knowledge regarding accessing and using LMSs, ineffective orientation practices, lack of technical support, and lack of support for training. This research contributes to the existing body of literature and advances social change by illuminating parents' challenges with implemented technology. School leaders may use the findings to devise strategic plans to facilitate training programs for parents.

A Knowledge Management System (KMS) Using a Storytelling-based Approach to Collect Tacit Knowledge

Shaw, Nicholas 01 January 2018 (has links)
Since the 1990s, Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) have been largely unsuccessful in the collection of tacit knowledge. The process, whether through direct input by the holder of the tacit knowledge or through an intermediary such as the collection of tacit knowledge through interviews and videos, has not succeeded. Reasons encompass the organizational (such as culture of the organization), the technological (example: poor tools), and the individual (example: knowledge is power, i.e. where experts with rare knowledge results in knowledge hoarding instead of transfer). The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that tacit knowledge could be successfully and consistently collected from the participants themselves and placed into a KMS using a storytelling-based approach. This study extended past research that collected stories for KMS’ using interviews and videos by having participants directly entering their data, as stories, into a KMS. This was a new approach and it was posited that having participants use stories to enter their tacit knowledge themselves into a KMS would overcome their reluctance to provide tacit knowledge thus overcoming barriers to providing tacit knowledge into a KMS The validation methodology was based upon three elements: the deep-dive research element, the issues and solution element, and the dissertation proposition element. The deep-dive research element was the extensive research for the study into knowledge management, storytelling, and other various methods for collection of tacit knowledge. The issues and solution element consisted of issues about tacit knowledge that were identified from the deep-dive research element, i.e. general arguments constructed about knowledge management which were backed by data from research into knowledge management systems and storytelling. Theoretical solutions to the issues regarding the capture of tacit knowledge were then constructed which included the storytelling-based approach and a KMS framework for the collection of tacit knowledge. Lastly was the dissertation proposition element which consisted of a thorough analysis of the survey data against each of the dissertation propositions. There were three propositions. Proposition 1 was sharing of knowledge and the storytelling-based approach. Proposition 2 was about the framework, the scenarios, guiding questions, and Communities of Practice (CoP), and Proposition 3 was about participant knowledge and interaction with forums. Each proposition was evaluated independently. The study was successful and validated propositions 1 and 2. For proposition 1, 81% of the participants responded positively to the eight study questions directed towards this proposition. For all eight questions across all 21 participants, the mean was 29.952 against a target test mean of 24 with a range of 27.538-32.367. For proposition 2, 76.19% of participants scored this section positive. For all six questions across all 21 participants, the mean was 23 against a target test mean of 18 with a range of 21.394-24.606. However, the results for proposition 3 were inconclusive and must be considered a failure. Most of the respondents either scored ‘no change’ to at least 50% of the questions or they stated they had never been to a forum. For all four questions across all 21 participants, the mean was 12.905 against a target mean of 12 with a range of 11.896-13.914. Based upon propositions 1 and 2, the null hypothesis was disproved. Participants liked the storytelling-based approach, providing their tacit knowledge, and they liked the framework.

Network Management System Selection Process Based on Modern Challenges and Industry Needs

Kylmäaho, Lasse-Pekka, Kristjansson, Haraldur January 2023 (has links)
Network management systems (NMS) monitor, configure and maintain computer networks. Network operators providing networking services are responding to the evolving bandwidth, availability, and latency requirements by upgrading from legacy management systems to alternatives utilizing modern technologies. This paper addresses the trends and challenges of transitioning from legacy NMS to modern management systems. The academic research on network management systems is limited, and we aim to provide a knowledge base on the subject matter by conducting a literature review. The literature review consisted of 43 primary studies from which eight themes were identified by conducting thematic analysis. An NMS’s typical upgrade and selection process is largely unsystematic and based on anecdotal requirements. We utilize the discovered trends and challenges as the basis for the network management system selection process. The selection process was developed via the design science research methodology. The proposed selection process combines the business problems perceived by network service providers with state-of-the-art network research. The results of the review and the process development outline practical implications in the subject area of NMS and introduce potential future research areas in the field of network management.

Performance Management Systems in Albanian Mobile Operators - Two Case Studies

Pone, Dorian January 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores the components of the MCSs in use by two Albanian Mobile Operators AMC and Eagle. The methodology used is that of multiple case studies; the study is interpretative, analyzing qualitative data, and has an inductive approach. There are three MCS frameworks used the Object of Control (Merchant and Van der Stede 2007), Control Package (Malmi and Brown 2008) and Performance Management Systems (Otley and Ferreira 2009). The empirical findings were gathered by using semi-structured interviews. Both managerial and non-managerial staff were interviewed according to their areas of expertise in MCSs. The findings suggest that the MCSs used by the two operators are highly structured as per the three frameworks, that AMC does not use any well known model (such as BSC, Tableau de Bord, Performance Prism etc.), whereas Eagle uses a customized BSC, and that the strategies of each of the companies are translated into action through the respective MCSs.

Brick by Brick: Exploring Sustainable Operations in the Built Environment : A Comparative Case Study of Swedish Real Estate Organisations' Decision-Making Processes

Alawi, Oscar, Alolabi, Nawar January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the decision-making processes of real estate organisations in the built environment with respect to sustainable operations, as well as how they relate to management systems and building certifications. In the study, we utilised the proposed framework by Schrettle et al. (2014) after examining the relevant literature on operations management in general and built environment-specific research, as well as acquiring insights from multiple studies. The framework included areas regarding sustainability decision motivators, mediators, approaches, and actions, as well as their impact on sustainability performance andfirm performance. Therefore, we conducted a comparative case study of six Swedish real estate organisations responding to calls for more in-depth research on these topics. Our findings support the applicability of Schrettle et al.'s (2014) conceptual framework to conceptualise and examine sustainable operations decision-making processes in the built environment. This study's results underlined the impact of stakeholder expectations and organisational capabilities influence on the strategic approaches and actions of an organisation's sustainability transition. According to the findings, active engagement from all key stakeholders is required to provide economic value as well as social and environmental achievements. It also described how real estate companies could comply with regulations, attract tenants, and prepare for the future by adopting sustainable practises at all levels of decision-making. Aligning sustainable practises with business performance is advantageous for all parties involved, resulting in cost savings, enhanced quality, and growth opportunities. Through empirical evidence, qualitative case studies, and insights into strategies, methods, andactions employed by real estate operators, this study contributes to the fields of sustainable operations management and the built environment. Additionally, linking concepts from the field of management system theory to these fields by demonstrating how management systems and certification act as green labels that increase resource efficiency, make it easier to create sustainable products, and contribute to improving firm and sustainability performance.

Vliv systémů řízení kvality na spokojenost žáků středních odborných škol / Impact of the Application of the Quality Management Systems on the Satisfaction of the Students of Secondary Vocational Schools

Liška, Roman January 2021 (has links)
The subject of the dissertation is the issue of school quality, resp. quality management systems used by secondary vocational schools in the Czech Republic. The use of these customer-oriented quality management systems is common abroad, in some countries even mandatory. According to the available information, these systems are not widely used in the Czech Republic, their use in the education sector is not registered. The aim of the work was to evaluate and compare the impact of the most frequently used systems (self- assessment framework CAF, EFQM and ISO standards: 9001) on the student's satisfaction and their attitudes to school. An experimental, exploratory and ex-post-factual study was carried out in 2020 using a standardized questionnaire developed by the Institute for Pedagogy and Adult Education at Leibniz Universität Hannover. The questionnaire has been used since 2011 to assess student's satisfaction and the quality of vocational secondary schools in Lower Saxony. Through factor analysis, the questionnaire was divided into three main and five sub-indices. The questionnaire was piloted on a sample of 741 respondents in a Prague secondary vocational school. The data collection itself was carried out at 21 secondary vocational schools of various sizes and founders, with the exception of one...
