Osudy pošumavské šlechty po druhé světové válce / The fate of German-speaking nobility from the Šumava foothills after World War II

Zemanová, Nina January 2020 (has links)
This thesis compares afterwar fates of three noblemen from the foothills of the Šumava mountains - prince Joseph Windischgrätz, Otomar von Pelikan and Georg Heintschel von Heinegg. These noblemen share a few characteristics. Except being members of the royalty, their mother tongue was German and they all had similarly huge property in a size of a few hundreds hectares. These estates were situated in the not so fertile area of the Šumava foothills. Since all three men were noblemen, after 1918, they felt as being strangers in their own country. This impression was even stronger on their Šumava manor farm estates which were situated in predominantly Czech areas with German minority. Each of the men reacted differently to his uprootedness - Georg Heintschel was involved in the Austrian Fatherland Front and he later entered NSDAP and was a dedicated Nazi member. After the war, he was for this sentenced to death. Pelikan pinned his hopes on Sudeten German movement and entered SdP and during the so-called second republic also into NSDAP. However, already in the beginning of the war he started to temper his opinions and at the end he used his position in the Nazi hierarchy for helping people. Pelikan represents an example of an equivocal collaboration in this thesis. Pelikan's afterwar trial lacks verdict because...

Reframing The Turn of the Screw: Queerness, Death, and Trauma in The Haunting of Bly Manor

Dugandzic, Magdalena January 2022 (has links)
Using adaptation and queer theory, this essay discusses and analyzes how Henry James’ horror novella The Turn of the Screw has been adapted into a streaming show for Netflix. By showing how The Haunting of Bly Manor removes some of the ambiguity of the original text, this essay claims that the show does not fall victim to the “bury your gays” trope, as it has been accused of. Instead, this essay finds that while the show may not perpetuate this trope, it still maintains the idea that queer stories come with tragic backstories and trauma.

Herrgårdsbebyggelse vid Gullmarsfjordens inre del

Sandberg, Erika, Sandstedt, Alice January 2023 (has links)
Prehistoric remains show that people have lived in the Munkedal area since the Stone Age. The early industrialization was favored by the rich natural resources, especially the proximity to forests and water. The fjord opened up the area to the world and provided good opportunities for export. These conditions attracted wealthy merchants and traders who boosted the area's economic development. The affluent built lavish manor houses, which led to a concentration of manor house complexes around the inner part of Gullmarsfjorden. The manor houses have origins from the 1700-1900th century and are more or less preserved today. Their strong connection to the area's history permeates the entire study. The result shows that the manor houses possess high cultural-historical values and should be treated accordingly. In the detailed development plan, all manor houses should have legally binding protection against alteration and be marked with the letter "q". With inadequate knowledge combined with insufficient legal protection, the manor houses and with them, a large part of the area's history, are at risk of being lost. Today, several of them are well preserved, but some inappropriate measures have been taken and three have been demolished. Very little of the gardens, park environments, and other farm buildings are preserved.

Coastal livelihoods : A study of population and land-use in Noarootsi, Estonia 1690 to 1940

Kiimann, Hele January 2016 (has links)
This thesis investigates how the inhabitants formed the coastal landscape of northwest Estonia through both internal change and external impact by estate owners, provincial government and imperial decrees. Two villages on the largely Swedish populated Noarootsi peninsula, Einbi (Enby) and Kudani (Gutanäs), are examined in detail. The aim was to answer questions about how the local livelihoods and farming systems of coastal inhabitants changed from the late 1600s to 1940. The background of a gradual weakening of the manorial estate system from 1800 onwards and a rapid development of freehold family farming from the 1860s is important to the analysis. To examine the complex variety of factors and interactions that shape the landscape, an interdisciplinary approach to change has been used. This approach included a conceptual model for the local production unit, such as the individual farm. Information from historical maps, diverse population registers and agricultural censuses were used. The soil cover was examined with samples taken during fieldwork in the studied villages. The study shows how the development of two villages in fairly similar geographic settings differed largely due to socio-political restrictions. During feudal times, the primary changes were related to the fact that local nobility could maintain their land ownership rights and regulations for manorial deliveries and corvée duties. Changes to natural conditions, such as soil quality and land uplift, had no substantial effect on land productivity. From the 19th century, the most important factor was the legalized opportunity to purchase farms as freeholds from estates, as well as through land reforms in an independent Estonia. The traditional niche of coastal Swedish peasants, who depended on a variety of productive activities, remained in practice. As all manor land was nationalized, many new smallholdings and crofts were created based on external activities by inhabitants, such as farm day labor. Farm productivity was now increased primarily by improvement to land quality (use of artificial fertilizers and meadow drainage), and by the introduction of new implements and crops on farms consolidated from open fields.

Vývoj obyvatelstva na panství Škvorec na přelomu 18. a 19. století / Population development at the manor of Škvorec at the turn of 18th and 19th century

Kuprová, Barbora January 2013 (has links)
Population development at the manor of Škvorec at the turn of 18th and 19th century Abstract The intention of this study is to analyze the development of natural change of population at the manor of Škvorec at the turn of 18th and 19th century (nuptiality and fertility in the years 1780-1819 and mortality in the years 1780-1869) and to characterize the basic demographic indicators. The nominal excerpts from parish registers was made to find numbers of births, marriages and deaths. Family reconstitution method (based on marriges from the years 1780-1819) was used for these data. The development of natural change at the manor is compared with the results of studies developed for the localities of the Czech lands and particularly with the development of the parish Lochenice and at Budyně nad Ohří. The conclusions mostly confirmed the development in the Czech lands. Comparison with results of Budyně nad Ohří confirmed the different population development in urban and rural areas. Keywords: development of natural change, parish registers, family reconstitution, manor of Škvorec.

Socialinės sanglaudos aspektai šiuolaikinio dvaro vystymo strategijoje / Aspects of social cohesion in the strategy of development of a modern manor

Radis, Dalius 12 May 2006 (has links)
Social cohesion is an important priority of the development both on Lithuanian and EU level. It is addressed to a human being, to the reduction of social differences between people, their groups and regions. Elaboration of tourism, including adaptation of the manors for tourism needs, is one of the priority directions of Lithuanian countryside development in order to ensure economical welfare and social cohesion. Elaboration of the manors as tourism objects must be linked with their integration into society life of local community. The goal of this research project was to define key principles of modern manor development strategy – principles, that would ensure, besides economical aspects of the manor elaboration, satisfying of social and cultural expectation of local society, would set grounds for an manors to became an example of most advanced forms of economical activities and social policy application. In this work an exploratory, qualitative research aiming to estimate relations between the manor and local society and their expectations towards the manor, was carried out. As a result, two possible alternatives for the manor development were settled and based on this a vision of the modern manor future and main strategic development principles to strive for this vision presented. The research has proved, that at present time the main expectation of the local society related to the manor is a minimum – that is, to have former facilities and parks of the manor rebuilt...
