Effective, Efficient Retrieval in a Network of Digital Information Objects

France, Robert Karl 27 November 2001 (has links)
Although different authors mean different thing by the term "digital libraries," one common thread is that they include or are built around collections of digital objects. Digital libraries also provide services to large communities, one of which is almost always search. Digital library collections, however, have several characteristic features that make search difficult. They are typically very large. They typically involve many different kinds of objects, including but not limited to books, e-published documents, images, and hypertexts, and often including items as esoteric as subtitled videos, simulations, and entire scientific databases. Even within a category, these objects may have widely different formats and internal structure. Furthermore, they are typically in complex relationships with each other and with such non-library objects as persons, institutions, and events. Relationships are a common feature of traditional libraries in the form of "See / See also" pointers, hierarchical relationships among categories, and relations between bibliographic and non-bibliographic objects such as having an author or being on a subject. Binary relations (typically in the form of directed links) are a common representational tool in computer science for structures from trees and graphs to semantic networks. And in recent years the World-Wide Web has made the construct of linked information objects commonplace for millions. Despite this, relationships have rarely been given "first-class" treatment in digital library collections or software. MARIAN is a digital library system designed and built to store, search over, and retrieve large numbers of diverse objects in a network of relationships. It is designed to run efficiently over large collections of digital library objects. It addresses the problem of object diversity through a system of classes unified by common abilities including searching and presentation. Divergent internal structure is exposed and interpreted using a simple and powerful graphical representation, and varied format through a unified system of presentation. Most importantly, MARIAN collections are designed to specifically include relations in the form of an extensible collection of different sorts of links. This thesis presents MARIAN and argues that it is both effective and efficient. MARIAN is effective in that it provides new and useful functionality to digital library end-users, and in that it makes constructing, modifying, and combining collections easy for library builders and maintainers. MARIAN is efficient since it works from an abstract presentation of search over networked collections to define on the one hand common operations required to implement a broad class of search engines, and on the other performance standards for those operations. Although some operations involve a high minimum cost under the most general assumptions, lower costs can be achieved when additional constraints are present. In particular, it is argued that the statistics of digital library collections can be exploited to obtain significant savings. MARIAN is designed to do exactly that, and in evidence from early versions appears to succeed. In conclusion, MARIAN presents a powerful and flexible platform for retrieval on large, diverse collections of networked information, significantly extending the representation and search capabilities of digital libraries. / Ph. Sepekovské Písně Mariánské / Marian Songs of Sepekov

Farová, Marie January 2015 (has links)
The Marian songs of Sepekov is the title for a handwritten Hymnal, which nobody comprehensivly examined and never publish. I discovered this manuscript when I was researching materials for my Bacherol thesis. The hymnal contains 489 czech-language pages from which I composed 43 songs with the organs accompaniment or songs in a four-part adjustment. The transcript od melodic line, next processing of melody and composition of polyphony give the readers an insight into the period of the formation of manuscript and it zooms miracles for which the manuscript was created. The historical events, which were accured in 18th century in Sepekov and were an integral part of the life of people from sepekov, are component of Marian songs. The whole Hymnal is built on devotion, supplication, prayers and the love of the pilgrims to Pana Marie from Sepekov. The pilgrimages, which they performed to this marian's place, were a seal of approval of their belief and it was culmination of their spiritual life for most of them.

The Amazon Archers of England : Longbows, gender and English nationalism 1780–1845

Arnstad, Henrik January 2019 (has links)
In the 1780s the medieval weapon of war; the English longbow, enjoyed a renaissance, as historical archery became a fashionable recreation among the English aristocracy. Later, during 1819-1845, longbow archery developed into a mass movement, as it spread downwards in the English class system, into the bourgeoning middle class. During the entire time period of 1780-1845, the “English warbow” was instrumental in producing a specific English (i.e. not British) nationalistic memory culture regarding the medievalmilitary triumphs of the “English bowmen” in battles of old, against French and Scottish forces, as well as reproducing a nationalistic narrative surrounding the English national hero and master-archer Robin Hood. The English longbow, as an object, became a mani- festation of English nationalism. An important fact was that both men and women were included as archers, despite the masculine context of the memory culture surroundingmilitary archery, the celebration of medieval English battlefield victories and the man- liness of the English “bowmen”. How did England come to view the female archer as an ideal for English women, while at the same time publicly upholding a patriarchal doctrine of a feminine “private sphere” womanhood, whereby women should be constrained to the domestic space as housewives, mothers and daughters? How was the English inclusion of females in the nationalistic public sphere of longbow archery made possible, communica- ted and reproduced? In summary, this study is about how longbow archery was manife- sted in the context of the rise of English modern nationalism and how women were inclu- ded – or rather included themselves – as English longbow archers. As the study shows, the answers exists in an inter-relating web of English memory culture regarding warfare and historical archery; gender constructions and female agency; constructions of English national identity and English nationalism within a British context; and class developments in English society. This accounts for how the Amazon Archers of England came to exist from 1780-1845. I denna fråga återfinns denna studies kärna. Hur konstruerades engelsk krigshistorisk nationalism 1780-1845 kring den engelska långbågen? Hur inkluderades kvinnor i denna maskulina nationalism?

A MANUTENÇÃO DO IDEÁRIO DE FAMÍLIA NO CENÁCULO DE NOSSA SENHORA. / The maintenance of the ideology of family at the Our Lady s Cenacle.

Ribeiro, Antonio Lopes 03 February 2014 (has links)

This Cenacle is one of the smallest cells of the Marian Movement of Priests, established by the Italian priest Stefano Gobbi. Our main objective, in this paper, is to analyze which conceptions of family are present during the devotional practices of the mentioned Cenacle and how these conceptions get close to or far from the changes related to the new constructions and configurations of family that are currently present in our society. Throughout the text that composes the three chapters of this paper, we try to identify: the sociocultural changes nowadays related to family; the propositions linked to family, which are present during the devotional practices of the Cenacle analyzed by us; the social representations of family, expressed in it; and the answer to the question of whether this can contribute to the assimilation of and/or the resistance to the primary changes observed in our era. In order for us to accomplish these objectives, we adopted the methodologies of the bibliographical research and of the field research, the latter with a qualitative approach. During the collection of data, we administered questionnaires and used the technique of the focal group. Based on the respondents speeches, we concluded that the Our Lady s Cenacle of South Taguatinga s Mansions Sector, due to its characteristics, is an intermedium between the Popular Catholicism and the Official Catholicism, with its conceptions, rites and practices, with regard to family, following its traditional patterns, mainly through the usage of archetypes idealized by the Catholic Church for the family, which are: the Holy Family and Our Lady as an example of woman, wife and housekeeper. Even though it is placed within a context of changes in the contemporaneity, regarding family with its new characteristics and various possibilities of configuration as well as religion, which is going through important changes nowadays, especially in relation to the individualized belief and the fluidity of faith, the Cenacle under study remains immune to such changes. This leads it to, due to its reiteration of the traditional values, which are considered to be intangible by the Catholic Church, such as chastity, matrimony, indissolubility of the matrimony, conjugal faithfulness and maternity, contribute to the maintenance of the ideology of the traditional nuclear family, reassuring, thus, with the patriarchal system, responsible for the perpetration of the masculine domination and the feminine submission.

As devoções mariais e suas manifestações em cânticos brasileiros: Epítetos / The Marian devotions and its manifestations in Brazilian songs of praise: epithets

Silva, Eliane da 30 September 2009 (has links)
This dissertation presents an examination of the devotion to Mary in the Brazilian culture, by analyzing aspects of epithets that prevail on songs of praise. This study is based on the criteria of interpretative analysis aimed at contributing to the understanding of Marian hymns of the present, as not many researches on her epithets can be found in scientific literature. The analysis is done through the classification of the types of epithets identified. From this investigation, it is possible to realize that the concept of a liberating Mary is greatly exposed in the hymns created along the time, as a great amount of poems of a liberating sense were verified. Mary is quoted as a real protector of the people in the songs analyzed, and the authors of these songs of praise refer to a saint who is closer to current problems faced by society. The epithets make clear that difficulties that the humble people face at the present are obviously remembered and mostly focused in the Marian texts with the aid of the epithets presented.

Psallendae Mariae: Marian Processional Chants of the Ambrosian Rite

Bruno, Emilie 07 December 2012 (has links)
This interdisciplinary study examines a collection of chants intrinsically connected to the larger body of Western Chant: the psallendae. These chants of the Ambrosian rite, the form of Christian worship proper to the archdiocese of Milan, were sung during religious processions. With over 700 psallendae assigned to the Church calendar, this study examines only those assigned to feast days of the Virgin Mary, and in doing so, reveals a rich history of devotion to her. The primary sources examined are thirteenth-century manuscripts and medieval liturgical manuals. The processional chants are subjected to a thorough literary and musical analysis. Rooted in François-Auguste Gevaert's thematic theory, and using tools of reticular and stemmatic analysis, the psallendae are grouped according to melodic profile. Each group is then reduced to a core melodic theme, which, when juxtaposed with the ancient practice of religious processions, makes a compelling argument for the psallendae as among the oldest Christian chants.
