Avaliação do potencial de cultivo e produção de ágar de Gracilaria domingensis e de Gracilaria caudata na Enseada de Armação do Itapocoroy (Penha, Santa Catarina) / Evaluation of cultivation and agar production in Gracilaria domingensis and Gracilaria caudata (Rhodophyta, Gracilariales) at Enseada de Armação do Itapocoroy (Penha, Santa Catarina)

Yoshimura, Cristalina Yoshie 08 August 2006 (has links)
Seaweed cultivation in the world began with empirical methodologies to propagate some species utilized as food. Later on, with the discovery of a process to extract and purify agar, it was soon realized that, because of the large volumes needed by a growing industry this activity would only be sustainable if based on mariculture once the natural beds were being depleted. Despite it was known that agar could also be extracted from Gracilaria species, besides the traditional species of Gelidium, that genus yielded a product with lower value. It was only after the discovery that an alkaline treatment could remove part of the sulphate that reduced the gel strength, and therefore improved the agar quality, that the commercial cultivation of Gracilaria species really got momentum and developed continuously. Nowadays, most of the agar produced in the world is based on Gracilaria spp. Although the exploitation of seaweeds for agar production in Brazil started as early as 1940, up to now our production is still very modest due to the limited biomass in the natural beds. Several attempts to cultivate local Gracilaria spp. have been made, some of which with promising results, but a real commercial mariculture never developed in Brazil so far. Based on that we developed this project aiming at the development of viable techniques to cultivate two species of Gracilaria common at the Enseada de Armação do Itapocoroy (Penha, Santa Catarina): Gracilaria domingensis and G. caudata. We also tested different protocols to better extract the agar from the selected species, comparing their yields and quality. Our results show that with some adaptations of the methodologies for cultivation and agar extraction utilized elsewhere it may be possible to make this a viable alternative.

Raising Islands

Knight, Christopher James Snazel 11 May 2012 (has links)
In an era of dawning anthropogenic climate change, people of atoll nations face grievous threats to their future. Rising sea levels, warming oceans, and changing weather patterns conspire with economic isolation, rapidly growing populations, and the loss of traditional livelihoods to perpetuate conditions of dependence and wardship which threaten the very existence of their island homes. This project examines an atoll nation of the equatorial Pacific, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, where the outward appearance of pristine tropical paradise belies a tragic history of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile testing at the hands of the US military. While the islands have been consistently framed in rhetoric which stresses vulnerability, smallness and unsustainability, this project contests the limited scope of the regimes of power in Oceania by considering how the independent, grassroots actions of local groups of islanders have achieved surprising and dramatic results in defiance of the policies and planners at the top. In developing a design proposal for the contemporary condition, this thesis examines the persistent ways in which the islands and people are framed by outsiders. This project engages with the social, political and natural history of the atolls: common tropes are challenged by the actions and agency of a people who have dealt with imperialist outsiders in sophisticated and conscious ways. It explores the traditional cultural practices which enabled the ancestors of the Marshallese people to flourish, and suggests that it is at the level of actions by ordinary people that the most fertile potentials lie, and are in fact already being played out. What forms of urbanism might be appropriate in this environment? How can islanders effectively manage their landscape and engage with the natural processes - as their ancestors once did to a remarkable degree? By pairing traditional techniques with modern technologies, a proposal is synthesized which could empower the contemporary Marshallese to transform their landscape and develop sustainable livelihoods in this extreme and dynamic environmental condition: to build a future which offers the best aspects of both traditional and contemporary ways of life.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mussels collected from 23 stations, divided into three regions: (i) mussel crops in the State of Rio de Janeiro (7 sampling stations) and Ubatuba/SP (1 sampling station), (ii) coastal areas of the State of Rio de Janeiro (7 sampling stations) and (iii) Guanabara Bay/RJ (8 sampling stations). The PAHs were determined in triplicate for each station, with each replica composed of an average of 10 individuals, by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS), totaling 38 compounds between parental and alkylated PAH. The mean total PAH concentration in the crops, with the exception of Mombaça (at Ilha Grande), was of 24.7 22.3 ng g-1, while the mean for the coastal areas was of 89.7 25.8 ng g-1, and of 760.9 456.3 ng g-1 for the Guanabara Bay. These results indicate that the mussel crops (with the exception of Mombaça) and the selected coastal areas present low contamination levels. Guanabara Bay, on the other hand, showed results comparable to past data, confirming the state of environmental degradation of the bay. In samples collected at the Mombaça mussel crop, the high concentration of total PAHs (584 ng g-1) and the predominance of alkylated compounds over parent compounds suggest the presence of relatively high contamination by petrogenic hydrocarbons. The cluster analysis, considering total PAHs, confirmed the separation between the three sampled areas, although some exceptions were noted: (i) the Mombaça crop resembles the Guanabara Bay group, (ii) the Praia Vermelha station, at the Guanabara Bay exit, resembles coastal areas outside the bay, (iii) the Ilha Redonda, Ilha Comprida and Pontal stations, over 5 km distant from the coast, were grouped with the other mussel crops. Only in samples from the Guanabara Bay was it possible to evaluate PAH origin by use of the principal component analysis (PCA). Most samples of the bay show mixed hydrocarbon contamination sources, and pyrolytic contribution was more significant only at the Praia Vermelha station. Finally, we emphasize that the PAH levels in mussels from the three areas were below the international reference values for human consumption. However, a specific risk analysis is necessary in order to better understand the quality of mussels for human consumption, particularly those from the Guanabara Bay.

January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: Aiming to know the zoothecnic potential of pampo, it was evaluated the effect of stocking densities (100 and 200 fish/m3) in the survival and growth rates of Florida pampano (Trachinotus carolinus), reared in marine cage. Fish with approximately 1 - 2g captured by seine in flat beaches of the city of Ubatuba, S.P. were transferred to the Núcleo de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento do Litoral Norte - Agencia Paulista Tecnologica do Agronegocio - Secretaria Agricultura e Abastecimento and kept during 45 days in cage of 5mm mesh size. After manual selection, animals of 4.0 ± 0.17g had been stored, in the studied densities, cage of multifilament with 2 x 2 x 1.5 m and 12 mm of mesh size fixed to a"deck" (6.0 8.0 m), installed directly in the sea at a depth of approximately 3.5 ± 0.5 m. The animals had been fed twice¬-a day until satiation with ration of 40% of PB. Soon after a 120 days experimental period, the average survival rate (77.23% and 73.11 %); average body-weight (52.79 ± 4.86 and 52.64 ± 5.64); weiht gain (48.69 ± 4.05 and 48.73 ± 4.00); daily growth increment (2.13 ± 1.24 and 2.16±1.03) and apparent feed conversion rate (3.23 ± 1.52 and 2.66 ± 0.78), respectively for 100 and 200 fish/m3,were recorded. These parameters didn't present significant differences (P>=0,05) between the tested treatments. However pampo weight gain, in this experiment have been superior to many works found in literature, what allows the conclusion that pampo can be reaise in sea cages in densities above 200 fish/m3, and this density could be the starting point for future studies. / Orientador: Newton Castagnolli / Coorientador: Sérgio Ostini / Banca: João Donato Scorvo Filho / Banca: João Batista Kochenborger Fernandes / Mestre

Comportamento predatÃrio do caranguejo Menippe nodifrons Stimpson, 1859 (Decapoda: Brachyura: Menippidae) sobre moluscos gastrÃpodes em laboratÃrio / Predatory behavior of the crab menippe nodifrons Stimpson, 1859 (Decapoda: Brachyura: Menippidae) on gastropod mollusks in the laboratory

Givanildo Ximenes Santana 04 June 2005 (has links)
experiments were used to study the effect of the predation of the crab Menippe nodifrons on the gastropods Stramonita haemastoma, Tegula viridula and Neritina virginea. Aspects studied were prey preference, handling time, predation techniques, prey critical size and chelal biomechanic analysis of the crabs. The crabs and the clams were collected in Pacheco beach, located in the city of Caucaia-Ce. Menippe nodifrons preferred Neritina virginea over both Stramonita haemastoma and Tegula viridula, and Stramonita haemastoma was strongly preferred over Tegula viridula, possibly because of differences in shell characteristics among the three species. The male crabs preyed more heavily upon Neritina virginea than on both gastropods Stramonita haemastoma and Tegula viridula, while the females had eaten indistinctly the three clams. There were differences in hadling times between Neritina virginea, Stramonita haemastoma and Tegula viridula (handling times: N. virginea < S. haemastoma < T. viridula). Crabs attacked snails using crushing and peeling techniques, the last was used only upon S. haemastoma and T. viridula. The mean critical size for Neritina virginea was significantly smaller than that for Stramonita haemastoma, which in turn was smaller than that for Tegula viridula. The claws of the crab Menippe nodifrons are well designed for breaking shells. Menipppe nodifrons is heterochelous, having one larger crusher claw and one smaller less robust cutter claw. Due to their greater mechanical advantage, crusher claws are able to generate considerably greater forces than cutters. Differences in the morphological and mechanical features of crab claws reflect their function and account for many of the observed differences in prey handling techniques and foraging behavior. Menippe nodifrons seems to be pecialised for attacking hardshelled molluscan prey. The predatory behavior of the crab Menippe nodifrons is directly related to the level of specialization of its claws, of the morphological characteristics and vulnerability of its prey items.
