Mapas dissidentes: proposições sobre um mundo em crise (1960-2010) / Dissenting maps: propositions on a world in crisis (1960-2010)

André Luiz Mesquita 21 February 2014 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation on a series of maps and diagrams produced by artists and activists between the 1960s and the 2010s, in different social, political and economical contexts of change and crisis, conflict and potential forms of resistance. Through the analysis of documents, catalogs, manifestos, articles, photographs, documentaries, art works, reproductions of maps and interviews, the research approaches mappings developed by three generations of artists. The first chapter examines the games and maps created in the 1960s and 70s by the Swedish- Brazilian artist Öyvind Fahlström (1928-1976), during the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War (1947-1991) and the structural and organizational changes in global capitalism in the 1970s. The second chapter discusses the works of the American artist Mark Lombardi (1951-2000), who, during the 1990s, has tried to map international power networks and obscure financial transactions involving banks, governments, and neoliberal elites, using narrative structures. The third chapter addresses counter-cartography practices developed between the 1990s and 2010s by activist art collectives Bureau dÉtudes (France), Counter-Cartographies Collective (United States) and Iconoclasistas (Argentina). Based on the interrelations between contemporary art, political activism and critical cartography, the thesis considers that the mappings produced by this activists-artists are important experiences of producing knowledge and visualizing power relations in the contemporary world, creating an opposition to supposedly neutral and objective maps created according to corporate, governmental and military interests.

The search for signs that separate from the traditional model based on a visual static mark, classified as a sole design, word or mixed mark is increasingly common. Law cannot remain idle in witnessing this scenario, since those new distinctive signs have their own particularities that are not contemplated by the Brazilian Industrial Property Law. The protection of the consumer market, of free competition and even of the owners private property of the signs themselves depend necessarily on having clear answers from the Law regarding the issue. Otherwise, the trademark system may become unstable. Therefore, this work aims at defining basic concepts regarding the theme and analyzing the main legal issues related to nontraditional marks, having international experiences on the matter as a basis.

Příklad Republiky Spojeného Nizozemí a stavů Kleve-Mark ve 40. a 50. letech 17. století / Ideological Intervention in the Early Modern Period. The Case of the Dutch Republic and the Estates of Cleves-Mark in the 1640s and 1650s

Kozmanová, Irena January 2015 (has links)
(EN) Ideological Intervention in the Early Modern Period. The Case of the Dutch Republic and the Estates of Cleves-Mark in the 1640s and 1650s 1648 is traditionally considered a major break in international relations. This thesis deals with the Dutch interventions in Cleves-Mark in the period before and after the Treaties of Westphalia and sets out to test some of these traditional assumptions. Rejecting the concept of the "Westphalian" sovereignty, it advocates a relational view based on mutual recognition. Accordingly, it focuses on the negotiations of the three subjects under scrutiny - the Dutch Republic as the intervening power, the Estates of Cleves-Mark as instigators and beneficiaries of the intervention, and the Elector of Brandenburg as the legitimate ruler - about their sovereignty, as they took shape in the arena of the "courtly public", especially in diplomacy. In the first part I argue that the Dutch Republic reacted very conservatively to the pressure to legitimize its role as a new member of the highly monarchical "courtly public". I also examined the impact of the domestic political system and diplomatic ceremonial on the external performance of the Dutch Republic, thereby uncovering the particular role of the Province of Gelderland. In three case studies of direct diplomatic...

No. of bitstreams: 1 PhoeveM_DISSERT.pdf: 1296465 bytes, checksum: ec2313938bcd5deb6a621d5f0f84edd9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-02-27 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / For a long time, we believed in the pattern that tropical and south hemisphere species have high survival. Nowadays results began to contradict this pattern, indicating the need for further studies. Despite the advanced state of the study of bird population parameters, little is known about their variation throughout the year and the factors affecting them. Reproduction, for example, is one factor that may alter adult survival rates, because during this process the breeding pair allocates resources to maintain itself to maintain offspring, making itself more susceptible to diseases and predation. The aim of this study was to estimate survival and population size of a Central and South America passerine, Tachyphonus rufus (Boddaert, 1783), testing hypotheses about the factors that define these parameters. We performed data collection between Nov/2010 and ago/2012 in 12 ha plot, in a fragment of Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil. We used capture-mark-recapture methods to generate estimates using Closed Design Robust model in the program MARK. We generated Multi-state models to test some assumptions inherent to Closed Robust Design. The influence of co-variables (time, rain and reproductive cycle) and the effect of transient individuals were measured. Capture, recapture and apparent survival parameters were defined by reproductive cycle, while temporary dispersal was influence by rain. The estimates showed a higher apparent survival during the non-breeding period (92% ? 1%) than during breeding (40% ? 9%), revealing a cost of reproduction and suggesting a trade-off between surviving and reproducing. The low annual survival observed (34%) did not corroborate the pattern of high rates expected for a tropical bird. The largest population size was estimated to be 56 individuals in Nov/11, explained by high recruitment of juveniles, while the lowest observed in May/12: 10 individuals, probably as a result of massive influx of competitor species. Results from this study add to the growing literature on life history of Neotropical species. We encourage studies like this especially in Brazil, where there are few information, and suggest that covariates related to habitat quality and environmental changes should be tested, so that we can generate increasingly reliable models / Por muito tempo, acreditamos no padr?o de que esp?cies e popula??es de aves provenientes de regi?es tropicais e do hemisf?rio sul apresentavam elevadas taxas de sobreviv?ncia.

Drying Times: Integrating Citizen Science to Examine Survival of Florida Largemouth Bass in a Coastal Refuge Habitat

Lee, Jessica A 26 March 2015 (has links)
In aquatic systems refuge habitats increase resistance to drying events and are necessary for maintaining populations in disturbed environments. However, reduced water availability and altered flow regimes threaten the existence and function of these habitats. To test refuge function I conducted a capture-mark-recapture (CMR) study, integrating citizen science angler sampling into fisheries-independent methods. The objectives of this study were twofold: 1) To determine the contribution of citizen science anglers to improving CMR research, and 2.) to quantify apparent survival of Florida Largemouth Bass, Micropterus salmoides floridanus, in a coastal refuge habitat across multiple years of drying severity. The inclusion of angler sampling was determined to be an effective and feasible method for increasing capture probability. Apparent survival of Florida Bass varied among hydrologic periods with lowest survival when marshes functionally dried (< 10 cm). Overall mortality from drying events increased with the duration of marsh drying upstream.

Demography and dynamics of a partial migrant close to the northern range margin

Karvonen, J. (Juhani) 04 December 2019 (has links)
Abstract Climate change causes range expansions, but neither the population parameters nor the ecological mechanisms behind range expansions are well known. I studied population dynamics and demography of the great tit (Parus major) in northern Finland, close to the northern range margin of the species’ distribution. I further examined winter conditions, such as temperature, as limiting factors on winter site fidelity and survival of human-fed great tits. Temporal variation in the population growth rate was large, but indicated an overall increasing population size, which fits the current large scale increase in the north. Importantly, the study population was a sink (or pseudo-sink) in almost all years because of low adult survival and low local recruitment. Immigration formed 39–43% of the annual population growth rate indicating that the population is demographically dependent on immigration. The demography differs most from other great tit populations in terms of adult survival which is lower than estimates from more southern Europe. This difference may reflect the impact of more difficult winters. Results from the wintering population support this line of reasoning. Within-winter movement was lower during mid-winter (January to February) and decreased during cold periods. This pattern is probably linked to energy saving and predator escaping strategies during these demanding periods when energy expenditure is high and birds have limited daylight hours to forage. Site fidelity was lower for juveniles than adults within a winter, but not between winters. In addition, survival showed strong links to winter weather. There was temporal variation within winters, particularly when the winter was colder than usual. Survival of juveniles showed a stronger response to cold temperatures. When mean daily minimum temperatures declined below –15 C° degrees, survival started to decline. Low winter temperatures thus provide one explanation for the lower annual adult survival and the sink nature of the population. The results suggest that great tits suffer from the cold conditions of the north: higher mortality increases turnover allowing for strong immigration. Great tits should benefit from warming winters caused by climate change.

Ochranná známka Společenství a její srovnání s národní ochrannou známkou - Se zaměřením na jednotnou povahu ochranné známky Společenství a absolutní důvody odmítnutí ochrany / The Community Trade Mark in Comparison with the National Trade Mark - Focused on the Unitary Character of the Community Trade Mark and the Absolute Grounds of Refusal

Beránková, Alena January 2011 (has links)
The Community Trade Mark in Comparison with the National Trade Mark - Focused on the Unitary Character of the Community Trade Mark and the Absolute Grounds of Refusal Abstract The Community Trade Mark system has existed since 1994 when the Community Trade Mark Regulation No. 40/94/EC was adopted. Even though the European system is younger than the national trade mark systems, one cannot say that it is a less successful system - particularly according to the number of registered Community Trademarks. The regulation of trademarks is very complex and for this reason I have decided to focus only on one part of the regulation, namely the unitary character, which represents a special characteristic of a Community Trade Mark - and further on the absolute grounds of refusal and their comparison in European and Czech trade mark law. The two systems for the registration of trademarks show considerable resemblance; however, one shall find differences, e.g. an integration of bad faith as one of the absolute grounds of refusal appearing only in the national system. The purpose of my thesis is to compare the two systems of trademarks - the Community level and the National level, and to provide readers with clear guidance regarding the general rules applicable within the registration. I will do this through an analysis...
