Previous issue date: 2011 / The quest for miniaturization of the structures has always been a constant effort of science and technology and today engineering can be thought on the atomic scale. Nowadays, the
Abbe diffraction limit has been exceeded and superresolutions are achieved by many optical
microscopy techniques. The combination of microscopy techniques with vibrational spectroscopy greatly expanded the set of information that can be obtained in a measurement. In this thesis, we work on several materials using confocal Raman microspectroscopy (MRC), but greater attention is given to the study of carbon nanotubes at high resolutions (15-25 nm) using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS).
Using MRC, we studied the penetration of the dye toluidine blue orto (TBO) in decayed
human teeth, the distribution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in the hybrid material ORMOSIL and the ferroelastic domains of the vanadates Pb8O5(VO4)2 (PVO) and BiVO4. The penetration of the TBO was studied at different focal planes within the tooth. We spatially mapped a specific Raman band of the dye along the z-axis and this way we estimated its minimum penetration. Next, we investigated the distribution of SDS in ORMOSIL. A characteristic peak of SDS was spatially mapped and led us to the conclusion that the size and distribution of the dopant SDS in ORMOSIL is not uniform. Besides, our results suggested that the inclusion of the SDS in the ORMOSIL membrane is only physical. We observed that the orientational states of the PVO have unique forms and features, and further, in some cases they form right angles with each other. The phase transitions and structural variations of the domains of PVO were spectroscopically mapped. The ferroelastic domains BiVO4 were spectroscopically mapped as well and, in addition, we applied analytical and numerical techniques in order to understand how the transition between adjacent domains happens.
Single- and double-walled carbon nanotubes were investigated using TERS. The research
on metallic SWNTs was carried out in conjunction with SERS and our results showed clearly
the influence of a metal particle on the enhancement of the Raman spectrum. We investigate
the effects of C ion irradiations on DWNTs. We observed that the shift of the G band of the C
ion implanted DWNT bundle is dependent on the exciting laser energy. We also investigated
isolated and small DWNT bundles and several near-field Raman images of the G, G’ and D
bands were presented. We also spatially mapped the ID=IG ratio. We found that, regardless of
the ion-implantation dose, the generated defects in the DWNTs can be punctual or extended. We analyzed the acquired TER spectra and observed no spectral signature of the induced defects. The variations of the ID=IG was investigated along many isolated DWNTs and, in some case, we noted a very high spatial localization, in the order of our spatial resolution (∼ 15 nm). The nearfield spatial maps of the Raman bands and the ratio ID=IG in the region of the highly localized defects allowed us to suggest a Raman scattering electron-relaxation length much lower than 15-10 nm for the defective region of the carbon nanotube.

In this thesis, we studied the effect of the substrate temperature in the evolution of texture, roughness and strain of CdTe thin films grown on different substrates. The and stainless steel foil samples were grown on SnO /glass, polyamide sheet (Kapton©) using the Hot Wall Epitaxy technique. The growth rate was approximately the same for all samples, about 0,5 μm/h, while the substrate temperature was changed between 150 and 250 o C. The grown films structure and surface morphology were characterized by xray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The X-ray measurements show that films grown on all substrates are polycrystalline with (111) preferential orientation, although the films grown on Kapton show much lower crystallinity. The AFM images were used to calculate the global roughness, height distributions and the power spectrum with the objective to determine the universality class of the growth process. Our results show that the films grown on Kapton at a low temperature folow the Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) universality class.

The β-cyclodextrin polymer (pβCD) has cavities that are suitable for the complexation of molecules. The pβCD can be associated with ionic surfactants to form a pseudo polyelectrolyte that can be used in many important applications, for example DNA compaction. However, there are few articles in the literature that studies the interaction of pβCD with surfactants and none showed a structural characterization and thermodynamics of the formation of those complexes. In this work, we study the formation of pβCD complexes in aqueous solutions with ionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium, evaluating the effect of increasing ionic strength in the structure and thermodynamics of complexation. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) measurements showed that the surfactants associate preferentially with the pβCD and form micelles only after the saturation of the polymer. The saturated polymer seems not to affect nor interacts with the surfactant micelles. Direct measurements of the polymer size showed that release of non-covalently βCD bound to pβCD takes place as adding the surfactant, followed by the increase of polymer size. Both phenomena were caused by strong electrostatic repulsion between surfactant molecules. We found that the complexes of surfactants with pβCD are less stable than with βCD. We suggest that the difference is due to alterations of the βCD cavity when in polymerized form. The interaction of the pβCD with DNA molecules were studied by means of the optical tweezers technique changing the polymer concentration. It was showed that the polymerized form of βCD does not act as an intercalator as well as the monomeric βCD. However the persistence length had a non-trivial dependence with the polymer concentration, reducing from ~ 40 nm (pure DNA) to ~ 22 nm at a concentration of ~ 10 M of pβCD and between 10-25 M increased slightly, stabilizing after 25 M. We use the model proposed by Rocha to determine physical and chemical parameters from the variation of the persistence length. We observed two types of aggregates along the DNA chain. In the range 0 – 10 M there are aggregates formed by 2 – 3 pβCD molecules per site of DNA molecule, and between 10 – 25 M, aggregates of 12 pβCD appear along the DNA strand. The typical binding constant of these two aggregates (~ 105 M-1) to DNA molecule is greater than that observed by Alves et al. for the native βCD (~ 102 M-1). Therefore, the polymerization of βCD enhances the interaction with the DNA molecule, opening a door of potential applications using these systems.

Previous issue date: 2017 / Using a self-devised numerical approach, we developed a powerful tool to investigate vortex
properties and interactions in mean-field theories for superconductors and superfluids,
based on fixing the vortex phase distribution in the energy minimization process. The
method was applied to (i) multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and (ii)
superconductors with single- or multi-component superconducting condensates. In these
systems, vortex-vortex interaction and other key vortex features are analytically described
only in specific regimes, that do not account for a large part of vortex behavior observed
experimentally. In multi-component BECs, for example, the vortex-vortex interaction is
only known for inter-vortex distances much greater than the healing length, i.e. far from
the vortex core. Under our approach, by assuming multi-vortex structures, within Gross-
Pitaevskii theory, we report the vortex-vortex interaction in the full range of distances,
capturing the mechanism behind unusual vortex conformations previously reported in
literature, such as bound clusters with two or three vortices. Usually, these clusters
emerge from a competition between intra- and inter-component vortex interaction, but we
demonstrate they can also emerge from the phase-frustration between the components.
In superconductors, the description of vortex-vortex interaction is usually restricted to
bulk or very thin films, and most of the key vortex features, such as the spatial magnetic
field and current density profiles, are known only in the limit of London theory, i.e. for
coherence length negligible as compared to magnetic field penetration depth and other
system dimensions. The parametric range outside this limit is actually relevant to many
materials. We fill that gap by applying our method to Ginzburg-Landau theory. The
vortex structure is investigated for single- and two-gap bulk superconductors, outside the
London regime. This enables us to extend analytical expressions describing the condensate
and magnetic profiles around the vortex available in literature by numerical calculations
and suitable fitting functions. We expand our approach to account for films with finite
thickness, to connect our findings to both bulk and Pearl’s description by adjusting the
sample thickness. This also allowed us to describe how vortex configurations change for
samples with intermediate thickness, where we observe the effective magnetic response
of the superconductor changing between the textbook type-1 and type-2 behaviors, in
a nontrivial manner, governed by the non-monotonic vortex interaction. As a result of
a detailed analysis, we propose new critical parameters to define the crossover between
different regimes and establish their relation with the superconducting critical fields.
Nesses sistemas, a interação vórtice-vórtice e outras
coerência, i.e. longe do centro do vórtice.
as componentes.
do sistema.
do supercondutor usual.

In this thesis, we calculate the decay width for some resonances, which can be considered as glueballs. This work is developed in the context of the Fock-Tani formalism. The formalism is applied for the resonances f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710), because the lightest glueball is expected to be in this region of the hadronic spectrum, with quantum numbers 0++. In the Fock-Tani formalism, the creation and destruction operators of composite particles do not obey the canonical (anti)commutation relations due to the presence the internal structure. After performing the unitary Fock-Tani transformation U on the bound state creation operator, a new bound state is obtained and is defined as the application of an ideal creation operator on the vacuum. The ideal operators obey canonical (anti)commutation relations. The transformation is also applied on the operators of the theory (quarks, mesons, baryons, glueballs, and other particles operators) obtaining, in an iterative way, an expansion in powers of the wave function. With these e®ective operators it becomes possible to build e®ective quantities in terms of fundamental quantities. One of these important e®ective quantities is the Hamiltonian, Heffective = U¡1HU, which contains the scattering diagrams with constituent exchange, hadronic decays, etc. This formalism also provides the existence of orthogonality corrections or bound state corrections. In this work, these corrections are applied to the quarks sector. For the gluons sector is is shown that the correction is zero. The f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710) resonances are considered as a mixture of states. This is due to existence of quarks and gluons bound states with the same quantum numbers. These states can not be distinguished, so it is necessary to introduce a mixture.

The lattice dynamics of inert gas crystals (Ne, Ar, Kr e Xe) is studied by the method of the elastic constants in the harmonic approximation and with potential models in the harmonic, quasi-harmonic and anharmonic approximations. The recoilless fraction of the Mössbauer effect for Kr83, where there is no agrément between theoretical models and experimental data, is discussed. The presence of several effects (like diffusion, anharmonic) is assumed in order to solve this lack os agreement, without a satisfactory solution to the problem.

Previous issue date: 2007 / In this work the vibrational properties of an amino acid crystal, the L-valine – one of the molecules constituents of proteins in animals, was investigated under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. The description was made separating it into two parts: In the first, the behavior of the normal modes of the crystal L-valine is described in the temperature range comprised between 24 to 150oC. The results allowed to establish the stability of the original monoclinic structure in the complete temperature range studied. Also, the linear
coefficients, dω/dT, were obtained from the
ωvs T plots, where ω stands for the wave
number, for all normal modes observed. With this data it is possible to obtain the explicit contribution representing the change in the occupation of phonons. In the second part, the description of the evolution with pressure varying be
tween 0 and ~7 GPa, is furnished for all
normal modes of the L-valine crystal. The ove
rall results, including the spectral region for the external modes and those for internal modes, lead to some singular observations: (i) Relevant changes were observed in all spectral regions in the Raman spectrum when the pressure attains the value ~ 3 GPa, in increasing the pressure; (ii) Severe changes are observed in some spectral ranges when the pressure attains ~5.3 GPa in increasing the pressure. The
ωvs P plots undergo sudden and strong
discontinuities for both pressure
values, probed by changes in slope or disapp
earance of some lines with appearance of
others. In particular, at the
highest energy spectral region, st
rong changes of intensity are
observed at those pressure values. At ~3 GPa the intensity of the spectrum is seen to
increase by about a factor of
5 times and at ~5.3 GPa the in
tensity decrease. Those changes
indicate the crystal structure to be affected
by the externally applied pressure, inducing
phase transitions. As the spectral region between 2850 and 3100 cm-1 contains the CH
stretching modes, it is possible that the CH
bond is modified by the transitions, causing a rearrangement of the molecules in the unit cell. Taking into consideration that the intensity increase at 3 GPa and decrease at 5.3 GPa, there is a possibility that th
e bond is stiffened at the lower pressure and softened up at the higher, affecting, therefore, the intensity. A molecular rearrangement can occur with no chan
ge in the crystal symmetry. However, other
spectral regions were also affected at thos
e pressures, making the change in symmetry a
iv more credible consideration. To analyze further, consider, for instance, the spectral region between 320 and 600 cm
-1, where the NCC- deformations, the
vibrations associated with the
skeletal structure, and NH
3 torsion vibrations occur. The
ω
vs P discontinuities observed for
this spectral region at 3 GPa
indicates that all those vibratio
nal modes were affected by the
pressure, thus reinforcing the structural phase
transition hypotheses. At
this point, it is
fundamental to call attention to the split
ting of the band 17, which correspond to a CO
2
-
rocking, at about 1.8 GPa that is a completely
isolated event. A possible explanation is the
increase in the intermolecula
r interaction due to the d
ecrease of spacing among the
molecules induced by the applied pressure. The intermolecular interaction increase can
cause the splitting of internal modes, as previ
ously observed for the Taur
ine crystal, with no
change being produced in the crystal structure. This effect can account well enough for the
band 17 splinting at ~1.8 GPa. In
the spectral region between 600 and 1200 cm
-1
the Raman
bands are weak and their disappearance should
not be taken as a si
gn for phase transition.
Next region, betw
een 1400 and 1700 cm
-1
, is characteristic of the following types of
vibration: CH
3
symmetric deformation, corresponding to the lines positioned at 1399 and
2428 cm
-1
(lines numbered as 33 and 34); CH
3
asymmetric deformations occurring at 1449
and 1454 cm
-1
(lines 35 and 36); CN
stretching at about 1510 cm
-1
(line 37); NH
3
asymmetric deformation at 1639 cm
-1
(line 39). Line 34 is di
scontinuous at 5.3 GPa, and
could not be observed for higher pressures due
to a superposition with its neighbor at 1453
cm
-1
. Line 35 is discontinuous due to a splitting
occurring at 3 GPa. Li
ne 39 is discontinuous
at 3 GPa, because it can not be observed for pressu
re above this value. Therefore, a series of
other vibrations than those
of the higher energy region ar
e affected by pressure, and
constitute a stronger evidence
for the crystal structure to
change at 3 and 5.3 GPa.

Previous issue date: 2007 / The present work is dedicated to the studies of preparation and characterization of
nickel ferrites. These ferrites were synthesized by the sun-gel process in suspension of
coconut natural water (cocus nucifera) ltered, prepared for Dr. Marcelo A. Macedo
team, from the Department of Physics of UFSE. This new synthesis route allowed to ob-
tain nanoparticles of nickel ferrites, that are prepared with the technique of formation of
mixed micelles, obtained by the coconut natural water. The molecules of that suspension
are called tensoatives, they are molecules associates spontaneously in aqueous solution
starting from a certain concentration denominated concentration critical micellar (CMC).
Above this concentration, the tensoative molecules form great molecular of colloidal di-
mensions. About analytic point of view, one of the most important properties of those
organized structures is their capacity of solubilize solutes of di erent characteristics. The
samples were roasted for 4 hours the since 400
C up to 1200
C in a fast cooling to the
ambient temperature and 1200
C to the temperature of the liquid nitrogen. The di rac-
tion of ray-X (XRD), the spectroscopic Raman, Infra-red and Electronic Microscopy of
Sweeping (SEM), were applied to study the dependence of the sizes of the nanoparticles of
nickel ferrite, with the temperature of the thermal treatments and their correlation with
their magnetic properties. The sizes of the crystallites increased of 5 nm (in the tempera-
ture of the thermal treatment of 400

the thermal treatment of 1200

The crystallinity of the nanoparticles increases with the increase of the temperature of
the thermal treatment. The results of the microscopy M ossbauer show that the ferrites
