Investigating Rapid Concrete Repair Materials and Admixtures

Quezada, Ivan 01 December 2018 (has links)
This dissertation presents a literature review of the state-of-practice for the use of IC in concrete mixtures and how structural engineers and construction engineers can adapt IC to their present and future work. Current high early strength concrete mixtures have natural cracking and shrinkage problems due to the high content of cementitious material or their chemical components. Using IC allows for early strength, enhanced durability, reduced shrinkage and a better curing by providing water that can be absorbed by the cement past after the final set. Rapid hydration and high early strength Portland cement and calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) concretes are commonly used as pavement repair media. The fresh properties (slump, setting time), mechanical properties (elastic modulus, compressive and tensile strength), and volume stability (autogenous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, restrained ring shrinkage, and creep) of rapid repair media were evaluated with and without internal curing with saturated lightweight aggregate. Significant improvements in volume stability were also noted. Results indicate that internal curing can successfully improve volume stability and mitigate restrained shrinkage cracking in rapid repair media without compromising fresh properties or ultimate mechanical strength. Maturity was observed for CSA mixtures and exhibited a correlation with compressive strength development which could be beneficial for rapid repair media on the field.

The mining is an important sector in the global development, however the activity is responsible of a large reject generation in the mineral processing. BUILDING TEACHER EFFICACY: CHALLENGES OF CREATING COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE AMONG NEW TEACHERS AND VETERAN TEACHERS IN A TOXIC WORK ENVIRONMENT

Lail, J 01 January 2018 (has links)
Recently, changes in graduation requirements in some states have made it more important than ever for students to be literate in all content areas. State assessments not only measure student academic ability, but they are a necessary component of graduation from high school. After completing required courses, students are expected to take assessments covering the content of those courses. In order to safely meet the graduation requirement, students must score at least 3 points per assessment on a 5-point scale. This has proven difficult for over 50% of students expecting to graduate. Students at Midwestern-American High School (MAHS) have been struggling to achieve the required minimum scores on the state achievement assessments, as have many others in the region. A review of the report card data for MAHS reveals the area of greatest need (i.e. category of lowest performance) is in science. Research suggests a leading cause for these struggles is waning teacher efficacy and lack of ability to build capacity in staff members due to high mobility in teacher populations, especially in urban communities serving high-poverty and minority populations. For these reasons, it is necessary for leaders to have the skill to quickly build effective instructional teams. During the 2017-2018 schools year, I utilized the Community of Practice (CoP) framework to establish entities that align closely with the criteria of CoPs. I used mixed methods research throughout the bounded period (August 2017 – May 2018) to conduct the proposed study. Data sources included: meeting agendas and minutes, participant interviews, survey results and reflections on the action by researcher and participants. I used the information gathered from this study to continue or modify the action and/or propose new strategies for the capacity building of staff.

The Development of Methodology for Gas Liquid Chromatographic Determination of Plant Sugars in Maturing Reed Canarygrass

Bittner, Allan Scott 01 May 1980 (has links)
This study was concerned with development of chromatographic methods suitable for determination of plant sugars. The resultant methodology was applied to the comprehensive study of plant carbohydrates as they vary during plant growth. Plant cell walls were isolated with boiling water followed by delignification with acid chlorite. The soluble portions were hydrolyzed with 2N sulfuric acid and the total sugars and individual monosaccharides were quantified using gas chromatography and colorimetry. The insoluble residues were hydrolyzed with 72% sulfuric acid followed by dilution with water to 2N and further hydrolysis. The effects of duration of delignification and acid hydrolysis were interpreted in terms of carbohydrate yield monitored colorimetrically and with gas chromatography. The rapid derivation of sugars was perfected using N-methyl-imidazole as an acetylation catalyst. This catalyst was also employed for the derivatization of lactonized aldonic acids, enabling the gas chromatographic quantitation of uronic acids. The growth of reed canarygrass was interpreted with empirical and non-empirical methodology. the empirical procedures provided little insightinto plant cell wall composition. The non-empirical methodology which included DMSO extraction and gas-liquid chromatography revealed the possible presence of a branched galactoarabinoxylan and a linear arabinoxylan in reed canarygrass hemicellulose. The presence of β-glucan was also confirmed using selective enzymatic hydrolysis. As the plants matured, the proportion of linear xylan increased. The occurence of galactose, mannose, fucose and rhamnose in cell wall extracts may be the result of acid catalyzed degradations and transformations of other cell wall sugars. The results revealed the value of chromatography as it is applied to interpretation of plant growth and composition. Gas-liquid chromatography was proposed as a tool for the evaluation of forage digestibility and forage quality.

Young Adult Maturing Out of Alcohol Involvement: Moderated Effects among Marriage, Developmental Changes in Personality, and Late Adolescent Alcohol Involvement

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: Research has shown that a developmental process of maturing out of alcohol involvement occurs during young adulthood, and that this process is related to both young adult role transitions (e.g., marriage) and personality developmental (e.g., decreased disinhibition and neuroticism). The current study extended past research by testing whether protective marriage and personality effects on maturing out were stronger among more severe late adolescent drinkers, and whether protective marriage effects were stronger among those who experienced more personality development. Parental alcoholism and gender were tested as moderators of marriage, personality, and late adolescent drinking effects on maturing out; and as distal predictors mediated by these effects. Participants were a subsample (N = 844; 51% children of alcoholics; 53% male, 71% non-Hispanic Caucasian, 27% Hispanic; Chassin, Barrera, Bech, & Kossak-Fuller, 1992) from a larger longitudinal study of familial alcoholism. Hypotheses were tested with latent growth models characterizing alcohol consumption and drinking consequence trajectories from late adolescence to adulthood (age 17-40). Past findings were replicated by showing protective effects of becoming married, sensation-seeking reductions, and neuroticism reductions on the drinking trajectories. Moderation tests showed that protective marriage effects on the drinking trajectories were stronger among those with higher pre-marriage drinking in late adolescence (i.e., higher growth intercepts). This might reflect role socialization mechanisms such that more severe drinking produces more conflict with the demands of new roles (i.e., role incompatibility), thus requiring greater drinking reductions to resolve this conflict. In contrast, little evidence was found for moderation of personality effects by late adolescent drinking or for moderation of marriage effects by personality. Parental alcoholism findings suggested complex moderated mediation pathways. Parental alcoholism predicted less drinking reduction through decreasing the likelihood of marriage (mediation) and muting marriage's effect on the drinking trajectories (moderation), but parental alcoholism also predicted more drinking reduction through increasing initial drinking in late adolescence (mediation). The current study provides new insights into naturally occurring processes of recovery during young adulthood and suggests that developmentally-tailored interventions for young adults could harness these natural recovery processes (e.g., by integrating role incompatibility themes and addressing factors that block role effects among those with familial alcoholism). / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Psychology 2013

Psychologický a duchovní průvodce krizí středního věku / Psychological and spiritual guide through middle-age crisis

Klimeš, Václav January 2012 (has links)
The thesis "Psychological and Spiritual Guide through Middle-Age Crisis" contains a synthesis of knowledge about middle-age crisis from the interdisciplinary point of view of psychology and spiritual theology in its first part. The fundamental opinion declares that middle-age crisis is not something to be suffered through but, in spite of all its demands, it is an opportunity and challenge for fuller and more authentic life, for maturation of a man and for getting closer to oneself and to God. In the second part of the thesis, knowledge and procedures of psychotherapy, crisis intervention and pastoral theology are used to concretize and extend the conclusions of the first part in a more practical way; hence, the paper can be used as a guide for those who are undergoing this period of life or those who want to accompany someone else on this way. The thesis is intended primarily, but not exclusively, to Christians who lack education in the psychosocial area and who is middle-age crisis a personal topic of themselves or of people around them for-be it their relatives or friends, or, in case of pastoral workers, clients in their professional care. This work is rather singular in the Czech language due to its conception, scope and synthesis of its starting points as well as their elaboration. Keywords...

Nečasová, Zdislava January 2012 (has links)
This master thesis is focused on comparing the options available to accelerate thematuring period of brick dough. There were four types of brick clay from differentfactories of the Czech Republic. From each of these four earth were created by three tests. One dough was stored in the laboratory, the second was heated in an oven and the third dough was added sulphite liquor. In these tests was studied mainly maturing and then further the effect the swallowed sulphite liquor on other properties (plasticity, sensitivity to drying, drying change of length and flexural strength). The result of job evaluation should be, how much time and how it will reduce the time of maturing.

[en] VIOLENT ENVIRONMENT, LOST CHILDHOOD? / [pt] AMBIENTE VIOLENTO, INFÂNCIA PERDIDA?

ANA CAROLINA DIAS VIEIRA 22 March 2019 (has links)
[en] The creative and symbolization potential of children from two slums, Turano and Chapéu Mangueira in Rio de Janeiro was the jumping-off point for this research that proposes an investigation of the structure and subjectification strategies presented in this often violent and hostile socio-cultural context. We used cases and experiences lived out at the NGO Casa da Árvore in order to develop this study and to create a portrait of the reality revealed within the slums and in the children s play. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate how a subject that lives constantly in a reality where fear, terror and helplessness are constantly present in an intense and potentially traumatic way needs to be considered. We work with the hypothesis that in this traumatic environment, the existing community and affective ties alleviate the deconstructive potential. With its hospitality and empathy, the community provides the necessary refuge to propitiate a healthy development. We believe, however, that the excess of destitution of the environment can result in the early maturity of the child in an attempt to cure, to wisely care for themselves.
