Os papéis das organizações associativas e as políticas públicas para o meio rural: uma história que se repete / The role of collective organizations and rural public policies: a repeated history

Mainly after Brazilian democratization, in the 1980s, and because of rural public policies, organizations emerge, being understood as spaces of social interaction to participate in strategies and plans for local rural development. This is a case study of Luz County, in Minas Gerais. First, it was carried out a literature and documentary review on the different kinds of organizations, on the evolution of Brazilian public policies and on rural development trajectories. Interviews were held with representatives of the organizations from Luz (1 union of farmers, 1 union of rural workers, 2 agricultural cooperatives, 1 credit union, 2 nuclei of cooperative development and 8 associations), also with representatives of the Local Sustainable Rural Development Committee, of the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company, and of the Minas Gerais Agricultural Institute. Some of the organizations studied were constituted in different institutional contexts, being evidenced a differentiation according to the periods. From their speeches, their roles are more or less clearly defined; however, in the local reality these organizations have distinctive culture, history and features that have been shaped during the years, through which they have also been asked to perform different functions. The new process of local public policy design requires the participation of the organizations, but not necessarily recognizes their specific features, nor the self-management of the organizational structures. Thus, we present the result of this trajectory of public policy interventions in local associative life, showing the resulting dysfunctions and the tensions with the history, characteristics and trajectories of the organizations. / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar os papéis das organizações associativas que nucleiam produtores e/ou trabalhadores rurais, principalmente a partir da redemocratização do Estado brasileiro nos anos 80 e das políticas públicas orientadas ao meio rural, das quais emergem as organizações entendidas como espaços de interação social, para participarem de estratégias e planos para o desenvolvimento rural local. Trata-se de um estudo de caso no município de Luz, Minas Gerais. Inicialmente realizou-se uma revisão bibliográfica e documental sobre os distintos tipos de organizações e sobre a evolução da história das políticas públicas e da teoria do desenvolvimento rural. No delineamento da pesquisa foram realizadas entrevistas com representantes das organizações identificadas no município (um sindicato de produtores rurais, um sindicato de trabalhadores rurais, duas cooperativas agropecuárias, uma cooperativa de crédito, dois núcleos de desenvolvimento cooperativista e oito associações). Foram entrevistados, também, os representantes do Conselho Municipal de Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável, da Empresa de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural e do Instituto Mineiro Agropecuário. Algumas das organizações estudadas constituíram-se em contextos institucionais diferentes, isto é, foram anteriores à redemocratização, evidenciandose uma diferenciação segundo as épocas. No discurso, seus papéis estão mais ou menos claros e definidos, no entanto, na realidade local estas organizações possuem história, cultura e características que foram moldadas durante os anos, nos quais também lhes era solicitado exercer funções diferentes. O novo processo de elaboração das políticas públicas pressupõe a participação das organizações, mas não necessariamente reconhece as especificidades nem a autogestão das estruturas organizacionais. Assim, apresenta-se o resultado dessa trajetória de intervenções de política pública na vida associativa local, mostrando as disfunções resultantes e as tensões para com a história, características e trajetórias das organizações.

Social Media Marketing Strategies in Nonprofit Professional Membership Organizations

The use of social media in nonprofit professional membership organizations affects how leaders communicate with members, consumers, the community, and other stakeholders. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the social media marketing strategies that leaders in nonprofit professional membership organizations use to keep their organizations sustainable. Data were collected from 5 social media marketing leaders representing 5 nonprofit professional membership organizations in the Chicago region. Data collection occurred through semistructured interviews, review of organizational documents pertaining to social media marketing strategies, and review of the social media sites and websites of the participants' organizations. Rogers's diffusion of innovation theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. A thematic analysis of the data yielded 4 themes: social media platforms and engagement strategies, social media content, social media challenges, and brand awareness. Leaders of nonprofit professional membership organizations who want to gain a competitive edge by using the appropriate social media platforms, creating quality content, overcoming challenges, and increasing brand awareness might choose to align with the strategies identified in this study. The findings of this study could help organizational leaders use social media marketing strategies effectively for engagement and organizational sustainability. The implications for positive social change arising from the use of social media by leaders in nonprofit professional membership organizations include opportunities to connect with and engage the public to build stronger communities through collaboration.

Women in voluntary service associations : values and meanings

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study examines the essential features of women’s experiences as members of a service association. It uses a qualitative method to understand how women make meaning from their membership in an all-female association and a mixed-gender association. The experiences were examined in comparative contexts. The study finds three common features in each association: joining, volunteering, and leading. In the mixed-gender association, women also experienced a process of assimilating into membership activities. The study provides scholars and association practitioners insights into the complex blend of members’ personal and professional interests with implications for membership recruitment and retention.

Informing practice and sabotaging membership growth: an ideological rhetorical analysis of discursive materials from Kiwanis International

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study utilizes an ideological rhetorical analysis, applying Marxist and Feminist lenses, to artifacts from Kiwanis International, a prominent global service organization. These artifacts are: "The Permanent Objects of Kiwanis," guiding principles that were codified in 1924; "The Man Who Was God": a brief story about transforming from Kiwanis member to "Kiwanian," published in 1935 and 1985, respectively; and the 2012 "Join the Club" Membership Brochure. The rhetoric of discursive materials is one of the most salient representations of group ideology. In turn, ideology, particularly when it reflects and perpetuates social hegemony, has a normalizing effect on itself. Ideology shapes identity; identity shapes strategies to set process norms that create social cohesion. Norms of social cohesion become culture; culture reinforces ideology. When these components mirror social hegemony and replicate hegemonic power, they create institutions, like service organizations; these institutions then legitimate and normalize positions of social privilege. Ultimately, ideology and social hegemony reveal themselves through organizational and member practices and organizationally-produced discursive material. The purpose of this study is to analyze the historical, socio-political, and socio-cultural roots of Kiwanis International in order to draw logical conclusions about the organization's ideology for the purposes of understanding how that ideology contributes to, justifies, and perpetuates an unconscious, neo-colonial view of philanthropy. Kiwanis International, on an organizational (macro) level and at the club/member (micro) level, is structured around positions of racial, ethnic, socio-economic, linguistic, gender, and religious privilege, and so mimics the hegemonic power centers and dominant ideologies of society at large. In turn, the products and practices of the organization reflect these positions of privilege and inhibits the organization's ability to attract traditionally excluded, disenfranchised, or under-represented groups. Understanding that it is a contentious and futile to simply point where power relations exist and assert themselves, this study emphasizes where "othering" occurs in hopes of mitigating relations of domination and oppression between Kiwanis members and perspective members, and of moving forward the interests of those who have not traditionally been counted among Kiwanis' members but whose presence could save the organization.
