Xukuru : memorias e historia dos indios da Serra do Ororuba (Pesqueira/PE), 1950-1988 / Xukuru : memories and history of the Serra do Ororuba Indians (Pesqueira/PE), 1950-1988

This research analyzed the oral memories of Xukuru Indians as well as written records in order to understand temporal connections between their fights for land in the 1980s and those that happened in the 1950s, when the establishment of an office of the SPI in Ororubá Sierra, in Pesqueira/PE gave the Xukuru official recognition. In both periods, the Indians claimed their rights because they recalled that their ancestors had received the land as a reward for participating in the War of Paraguay, in a dispute for the land of the officially extinct Village of Cimbres / Ororubá in the end of the nineteenth century. The research brought out elements of these Indians¿ collective history as well as of a number of their shared historical experiences, which confer them an identity based on a common ancestral space. Accounts of the Xukuru of Ororubá¿s oral memories comprise moments that express their everyday life, places, and social activities created in Sierra Ororubá ¿ pointing out the significance of Cimbres as a space of reference for their mythical-religious memory, which supports the identity of the group ¿ in addition to employment relations with farmers and experiences as factory workers in Pesqueira. The Indians also report activities, performed for survival due to lack of land and drought periods, in sugar-cane plantations in Zona da Mata, in the South of Pernambuco and in the North of Alagoas, as well as in cotton plantations in Paraíba¿s Sertão. Such information emerges from fragments of individual accounts, from autobiographical memories, which are nonetheless part of their collective history. The findings presented here try to elucidate how the Xukuru of Ororubá, relying on memory and on their shared past history, reinterpret events they consider important to guarantee their rights as indigenous people, considering what they have experienced, conceived and expressed.

This essay studies the social path of the journalist José Carlos do Patrocínio (1853- 1905). Recognized as one of the epitomes of the abolítionist campaign in the imperial court, Patrocínio had an intense and complicated lífe within the press world in the end of the 19th centur.y. Besides being a journalist, a political critic, and writing feuilletons, he was also the owner and editor of two newspapers between the 1880's and 1890's. Profoundly involved both in the polítical and social questions of his time and in some polemical issues, Patrocínio is a key to access, I and comprehend some historical circumstances of that period. This analysis focuses not only on the debate on the abolition and campaign for the republic, but also - and main1y - on the personal experience of Patrocínio. Therefore, one of the core issues of the research is to recover and try to understand the paths that were effectively traced afid the possible ones to be followed by a poor, young, black son of a vicar and one of his slaves in a world marked by compulsory work. Gn the other hand, this thesis also aims at analysing a myriad of crystallized images about Patrocínioduring a process of contests and accommodations of memory. Gn this mater, a special attention was dedicated to the main bibliographic works and memories about him in a way to understand the mechanisms by which his "abolitionist" legend was eternalized on such works - being recovered also in the historiography / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutor em História

Imprints of memories, shadows and silences: shaping the Jewish South African story

Sakinofsky, Phyllis Celia January 2009 (has links)
Thesis contains the novel "Waterval" by Phyllis Sakinofsky. / Thesis (PhD)--Macquarie University, Faculty of Arts, Department of Media, Music, and Cultural Studies, 2009. / Bibliography: p. 128-138. / PART ONE -- Introduction -- Section One -- Early history -- The apartheid years - two realities -- Post-apartheid South Africa -- The creative response of Jews to apartheid -- Section Two -- Our relationship with the past: placing narrative in the context of history -- Rememory and representation -- Telling the truth through stories -- Section Three -- Imprints of memories, shadows and silences: shaping the Jewish South African story -- PART TWO -- Waterval: a work of fiction by Phyllis Sakinofsky / This is a non-traditional thesis which comprises a work of fiction and a dissertation. -- The novel is set in South Africa and provides an account of events that took place among three families, Jewish, Coloured and Afrikaans, over three generations. -- The dissertation is constructed in three sections. The first section describes the settlement of South Africa's Jewish community, its divergent responses to apartheid and how this is mirrored in its literary output. -- In the second section, the relationship between history and fiction since the advent of postmodernism is discussed, how there has been a demand for historical truthfulness through multiple points of view and how consequently there has been an upsurge in memories and memorials for those previously denigrated as the defeated or victims. -- Fiction has been re-valued because it is through the novel that these once-submerged stories are being told. The novel has the capacity to explore uncomfortable or silenced episodes in our history, tell important truths and record stories and losses in a meaningful and relevant way. A novel might be shaped by history but it is through the writer's insights and interpretations that messages or meanings can reach many. -- South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission report is an example of how the written word can expose the relationship between the re-telling of history and finding an alternate truth. By recording the many conflicting stories of its peoples, it has linked truth and literature, ensuring an indelible imprint on the country's future writing. The past cannot be changed, but how the nation deals with it in the future will be determined by language and narrative. -- The final section is self-reflexive and illustrates the symbiotic bond between the research and creative components, citing examples from the dissertation of how the two streams influenced one another. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / 145 p

Dresden und der 13. Februar: Universität und SLUB widmen der Erinnerungskultur eine Forschungsausstellung

Bürger, Thomas 17 March 2011 (has links)
